A TtV of an Amtrac train for +Gene Bowker :)

The TtV was made with a Ciro-Flex TLR camera and if you don't already know... a TtV is where you take a photo of the viewfinder of antique camera. TLR cameras are typically used to make TtV's but I also have a Salyut that I like to shoot with as well. The Salyut has a clear ground glass back on it thats pretty slick.

July 23rd, 2012 Me at the terminus of the Svínafellsjökull Glacier, South East Iceland with my trusty F-Stop Tilopa BC backpack. Amazing to say the least to have only seen glaciers in photos and video and then to be up close and personal with one.

I had forgotten my black jacket in Akureyri but my friends there put out the word for anyone going to Reyðarfjörður where I was staying the next night. The jacket arrived about mid-night at the hostel up the street from the AirB&B I was staying. They call it Niceland for a reason. :)

Lenticular cloud over the Mono Craters

As a boy I formed a strong attachment to these craters on road/camping/fishing trips from the West slopes of the Sierras where I grew up. When we dropped down from one of the mountain roads into the Mono Basin and I got my first sight of them it was like some unobtainable Shangri-La beckoning on the horizon. On this day it appeared that aliens in a sleek art deco spaceship masquerading as a lenticular cloud were making a pit stop. I didn't get the memo as I had to start the long drive home right after this photo. ;)

The Mono Craters, were formed from from eruptions 40,000 to 600 years ago. The chain of craters actually starts on the North side of Mono Lake and includes the two volcanic islands in Mono Lake. There's lots of pumice and obsidian in this area and I would imagine that the local Native American bands traded it with the bandson... more »

From the evening before the February 11th launch of the Landsat LDCM mission at Vandenberg. This is the satellite that will become Landsat-8 once its calibrations are complete. Landsat-8 will continue the 40 year legacy of mapping the Earth every 16 days. +USGS News: Data, Tools and Technology  provides the imagery for free.

Live streaming from the Keck II telescope atop Mauna Kea, Hawaii starting at 3 AM Hawaiian time, 6 AM Pacific as they have a Saturn observation session.

"Join us Sunday 3am to 5am Hawaiian Standard Time (GMT -10) for a peek into an actual observation run with astronomers: Kevin Baines (JPL), Tom Stallard (University of Leicester) and Steve Miller (University College London). They will be looking at Saturn's aurora using the NIRSPEC instrument on Keck II, in a attempt to lead to a deeper understanding of the coupling between Saturn's magnetosphere and upper atmosphere. "

Astrophoto: Space Station Flies Through the Moon!

What a great image! Astrophotographer Dave Walker combined seven 30-second shots of the ISS as it cuts through the sky, and it appears to slice right through the Moon! Dave used a a Canon 600D, Samyang 8mm fish-eye lens, and Vixen Polarie.

California poppies and a nice old oak. California poppies close up during the night so shooting during the day is required which is kind of the opposite of what I'd like for a scene like this. The poppies are blooming everywhere here in spite of it being a very dry year.

Evening at Grant Ranch which was part of what was once Rancho Cañada de Pala, a Mexican land grant dating back to 1839 in California. The old barn of course is not that old. Last weekend I spent a very nice couple of hours walking through this area making a few captures. Its been warm and humid so I kept an eye out for early season rattlesnakes. ;)

China Camp State Park, Marin County

I made this capture during the San Francisco Bay Area Long Exposure Photowalk organized by +Nathan Wirth (linked below) in back January. I really enjoy history so I spent some time browsing this cool old building. China Camp was a shrimp fishing village in the late 1800's. About 500 Cantonese Chinese immigrants lived there. Thankfully, this park is still being maintained in spite of the budget crunch in California.

This is a gentle HDR made from 3 bracketed RAW files, some processing in Nik Color Efex and then Silver Efex Pro. This a large file so you should be able to zoom in a bit.

Aldeyjarfoss, North Iceland

This was the first stop on our wonderful and long drive into the Icelandic Central Highlands last July. Helga and Völundur told me that there was a future plan to divert the water from this river to create a reservoir behind Fljótshnjúka Dam in order to generate hydroelectric power for an aluminum smelter. I later learned that there were plans to damn most of the large rivers all around Iceland in order to supply cheap power to aluminum companies such as Alcoa. 

If you use aluminum you're likely involved as a consumer. If you love photos of the gorgeous Icelandic countryside please add your voice to the petition below. 

The petition was started by Icelanders concerned about protecting their country's beautiful heritage. It will be presented to the President of Iceland.

Comet #PanSTARRS  on the evening of March 12th, 2013. 

The Oort cloud pitched Comet PanSTARRS towards the Sun millions of years ago and in a slow motion game of catch the Sun will then sling the comet back out to the far regions of our Solar System.

The PanSTARRS comet was discovered in June 2011 by the Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System located on top of Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii. The PanSTARRS camera is reported to be the largest digital camera ever built, recording almost 1.4 billion pixels per image. It was designed as an early warning system for dangerous objects approaching Earth.
