James Fridley10,639Every year Single Origin Rosters does a thank you party as their last day of trade for the year. This involves awesome coffee, canapés, and if other years are anything to go by, a live band.  If you are looking for an excuse to **cough** finally get off your arse on a Friday morning and visit #coffeemornings  then this is the one that you want to come to. See you thereFinal #coffeemornings for 2013 (Xmas Edition) {Public}2013-12-20 08:30:0015
BitterBliss373About that time of the week for another coffee and a chat with interesting people. Wonder who will be there this week...?Sydney #coffeemornings2013-08-02 07:00:003
James Fridley10,639Just a quick reminder that tomorrow being Friday means that it is time to gather around a cafe table and chat about pretty much anything.  N.B. Single Origin is CLOSED for renovations. Tomorrow will be at Corduroy Cafe (near the Hollywood Hotel) See you there?Sydney #CoffeeMornings2013-05-03 07:00:001
James Fridley10,639Can not believe it is Friday already. Time for more coffee.... of course... :-) See you there?Sydney #coffeemornings2013-03-22 07:00:001
James Fridley10,639Yup, it is that time of week again when we stare disbelievingly at the calendar and think "How the hell is it Friday already"... which also means it is time for us to gather together and communally rant about this and that over a great cup of coffee. See you there at #coffeemornings  ?Sydney #coffeemornings2013-03-15 07:00:003
James Fridley10,639Just in case people need a bit of a mental nudge, yes... tomorrow is Friday... again.... And yes... #coffeemornings  is on... and yes.... I'll be there from 7am.... but no ... that doesn't mean you can't arrive at 8am... :-) See you there?Sydney #coffeemornings2013-03-08 07:00:001
James Fridley10,639Yup... it is back on again. Last week caught a few people out with #fastbreak  but this week #coffeemornings  is a go. See you there?Sydney #coffeemornings2013-03-01 07:00:001

Seumas Hyslop1,773On the Australia Day Holiday, it's time to put down the XMP Bursters for a couple of hours and have a drink with the people you've been fiercely battling with recently.  It's time for the first Sydney Enlightened/Resistance cross-factional meet. The main reason is to get out there and meet so many of you - both our own factions and that of our opposition.  It's been done in many other cities, and I can imagine everyone would benefit from getting to know the real life stories of the people you're playing against. And now the HUGE sweetener, thanks to Joe Philley at Niantic, there will be AT LEAST FIFTEEN invitations given out during this two hour period.  To have the maximum chance of winning one, you'll need to be a confirmed guest on this event (not just turn up) on the day.  There will also be bonus invitations for people that turn on Google Plus Party Mode on their phone and contribute photos to a shared gallery of everyone at the event.  Be there or miss out! Those people that are not yet playing but hope to be, you are welcome to come along as well - and you might score your invitation code to start playing and then have members of both the Enlightened and the Resistance courting you to join their team all at the same event!Sydney Ingress 1st Cross-Factional Social Meet2013-01-28 15:00:1627
James Fridley10,639Do you really need more of an excuse to drink great coffee and meet awesome people..? Really? Well I hear that it is someone's b'day, so feel free to buy them a coffee or two... :-)Sydney #coffeemornings2013-01-25 07:00:001
James Fridley10,639Yup... this week the cafe is open and #coffeemornings  will be on for young and old. Time to grab a seat, a cup of coffee and prepare to save the world one rant at a time... :-)Sydney #coffeemornings2013-01-18 07:00:002
James Fridley10,639Only a few more hours until the first Sydney #coffeemornings  for the year... Wonder who will be there :-)Sydney #coffeemornings2013-01-10 21:00:002
James Fridley10,639If there is one #coffeemornings to attend each year, this is the one you can not and should not miss. There will be food (a range of delicious canapés), there will be dancing and music (provided by a live band on the back of a truck), and yes.... there will be a tonne of coffee. This will be your last chance to visit Single Origin in 2012 as they shut down for the Xmas break, so make no excuses, set no other plans, don't eat breakfast before you come, and I will see you there.#coffeemornings Xmas Party2012-12-21 07:00:004
James Fridley10,639It is that time of week again. Coffee, rants, and friends. Even got a couple in from overseas this time. See you there?Sydney #coffeemornings2012-11-16 07:00:001
James Fridley10,639Seems Friday is here again so it is time for caffeinated rants... You coming? :-)Sydney #coffeemornings2012-11-08 21:00:001

Need a coffee, had a COFFEE!

With a request to make the BitterBliss list of best "coffee" in Sydney, and with a morning where the kids were off picking mandarins for fun (apparently that's a thing), it seemed only right that I find my way to @editionroasters for a coffee or three...

And I was immediately rewarded with a delicious espresso made with a natural processed Guji that was surprisingly amazing. I say "surprisingly" as during the first sip the creamy mouthfeel and robust warm nutty flavour ended with a, "hey, I'm a natural" kind of funky sweetness. During the 2nd and 3rd sip, the natural sweetness was underlined by an increasingly vibrant sparkling (somewhat stabby) acidity.

This was a very special coffee, and worth travelling here for. #coffeehunt

Time for a #publicserviceannouncement  "Don't get caught with your pants down"
(This is regarding the WhatsApp Virus but is worth going through as general security maintenance.)

I have had a couple of calls from my mum recently who managed to infect her phone and possibly her Gmail account by clicking on a link in an email from her friend.... O_o

1.DO NOT CLICK LINKS YOU ARE NOT EXPECTING!!!

So after she clicked the link, it sent out the same looking email from her account to everyone in her contact list.

If someone is using your account without your permission you can see who is logged into it via You can check your account activity from this link https://security.google.com/settings/security/activity and then you need to change your password immediately https://accounts.google.com/EditPasswd

You may also want to review your personal info to make sure that nothing was changed https://www.google.com/settings/personalinfo

As Gmail has it, if you have not already set it up, you should enable 2-step verification. https://www.google.com/settings/security

You should also double check who has permissions to access your account https://security.google.com/settings/security/permissions and remove anyone you don't recognise.

Finally, if you are on a windows machine, take this motivation to do what you should have done long ago. Only use a standard account for day to day activities. Using an "Administrator account everyday is like running around with your pants down around your ankles and a target tattooed on your arse.

To do this go to your control panel, under the "User Accounts and Family Safety", add a new Admin user. You will need this to install new programs etc in the future. Give it a strong password.

Next you need to change your current account type. You'll find this option at -> Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts and then need to "Change your account type" to standard user.

Why?  -- As a standard user, even if your computer does get infected, it won't have the same access or impact as it would on an administrator account.

Oh... and if you have issues remembering or creating long secure passwords for your accounts, stop using the same password for all of your accounts, stop using "1234", "monkey" or "password", and start using LastPass. These days it works on pretty much anything so you have no excuse not to... (LastPass.com)

This has been a public service announcement. If you have questions about this, or can't manage it, maybe you should contact Fridley Web Services (Fridley.com.au)....  *wink*___

Was not planning on eating out, let alone going to a yakitori bar for ramen, but as I was in the area..

For starters, the guy making it is from Fukuoka, also known as hakatta, where pork bone soup is Da Bomb! The ramen I ordered was the stock standard (with kata-men of course), which was served with half an egg and a couple of thick and juicy slices of chashu. And so it began..

The first mouthful had the delicious balance of pork fat and something light and fresh. Kind of like a leek soup mixed up with the best filling from a 551 butaman (Tokyo ppl may need to research this). It was delicious.

The ramen was the perfect thickness and cooked very well. And as I devoured it all, the very last swig from the bowl, the fresh taste of black pepper (though not an ordinary one) left me almost needing to order another one.

If you like ramen as much as I do, pony up the $13, and get yourself here for lunch. It was well worth it. 😆🍲👍___

Been one hell of a day today. Highs, lows and everything in between. While still not in a good place, I've got a feeling the tide is turning finally, and things are getting better. Hope all the coming tomorrows prove me right.

Hope life is treating you and yours well on your end of the stick, where ever that may be.

Got a few hours spare to support the Sydney coffee community?

That's right, the Aroma Festival is just around the corner, and with it comes a series of ASCA workshops, designed to help coffee lovers and coffee professionals take their hobbies and skills to the next level. Workshops will include information about cupping, roasting, latte art and much more.

Don't want to pay to attend? Easy, just sign up as a volunteer. It is through your continued support that events like these are made possible.

We are also looking for help on the 26th of July at the festival itself. With 3 areas to cover, the more volunteers, the less the burden shared by all. So don't just sign yourself up... convince someone else to help out as well.

To sign up, please fill out this form and we will get back to you.

For a long time I have wanted to write a book about coffee, not from the perspective of an expert, but from someone who is really passionate and enjoying the process of learning more about coffee. But I’ve tried starting that book at least 5 times so far, and tend to get pulled away on other projects. So I have a plan.

The plan is simply to go chapter by chapter and publish as I go. The great thing about this it that the 800-900 word chunks are easier for me to write and publish, and coincidentally easier for you to consume.

The other focus of this format it to help pay for coffee. At this point, BitterBliss only covers about 20% of my coffee bill, and if I can’t cover what it costs, this becomes an expensive passion project. Sure you could shout me a coffee when ever you like, but I’d rather that you end up with something out of the deal.

Rather than charge you on my website, I have setup a Patreon account so that you can support me at whatever level you want. Think it is only worth $0.20 then that is all you should donate. I’d love closer to $1, but I’ll leave it totally up to you. It is a value for value model. So if you get any value out of BitterBliss, the directory, or anything else I do, please pledge what you can.

At this stage I intend on putting out a new entry every 2 weeks or so. So if you pledge $0.50, you'll only get charged $1/month. ___

What's "new"?
Decided to add a "#NEW" filter for the cafes, as "have you heard of any new cafes opening up" seems to be one of the first and or the last questions I ask or am asked.

Still a little bare ATM, but it is a work in progress... :-)

The BitterBliss List of Sydney’s Best COFFEE
Having seen yet another list of "Best Coffee in Sydney" come out and again notice that food, not coffee, was the focus, I was challenged to do better.

As only one guy drinking coffee, there are obviously limitations, but if you like what I like, then you might get some value out of this list after all.

Like any list, as soon as it is posted it will likely be out of date, with new cafes opening all the time, so treat it as a starting point, and not a ranking, and I think you'll do just fine.

#coffeehunt

How about you get the first one for free

It seems that I have been slack in talking about my pet side project of doing some writing, about coffee of course, as well as everything else I end up doing>

So to rectify this situation, and to save you a $1, I have published the first edition of Diary of a "Coffee Snob" for free on BitterBliss.com

Hopefully it is an enjoyable introduction to the series of publications I intend on writing. Look forward to the feedback.

Where is the best place to write/publish an eBook? Have tried liber.io but it seems to be limited when it comes to including images.

I don't need to sell the books, but I'd like to be able to create a .mobi and .epub version.

Know where your nearest "Star" cafe is?

Got to add another couple of cafes to my growing list of recommendations today. I hope that you find them useful.

If you need help finding the cafe, there is a map at the bottom of each cafe entry. I've also added the opening hours for each cafe that should make life a little easier for you.

As it is still early days, and I am far from finished adding my recommendations, please let me know if you think any of the pages are missing information that you'd find useful.

While I still want to highlight coffee related articles that I find around the web, I think having it in the main header seems more appropriate.

Decided the easiest way to get feedback was to try and see

It is just an experiment, but if anyone is game, I have written the first in possibly many chapters of "Diary of a Coffee Snob", a short (600-900 word) breakdown of particular topics.

I am unsure if the format or the the methodology is final, but it'll be interesting to see what the feedback is like.

Just finished watching a 3 part movie called "Residue". It left me with a lot of the same feelings that I got from "The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo". It's dark, it is strange, but the character development is pretty awesome.

Worth a look if you get time (via: Netflix)

Do you get any value out of the reviews, maps, coffee research, etc on the BitterBliss.com site?

It isn't cheap drinking this much coffee and staying up to date with what's happening in the coffee industry.

So if you can spare it, why not shout BitterBliss a coffee (or two) today.

Many thanks

Decisions, decisions... Time to get down to brass tacks...

I am not sure if you noticed, but I LOVE coffee. Over the last few years I've become increasingly interested in specialty coffee, the sensory experience and the passion displayed by many in the industry.

I've reviewed 100's of cafes, and drank more coffee at more cafes than most, and it is something that I want to continue... But... Passion projects need to pull their own weight at some point. And so comes the question, what value does BitterBliss offer?

While getting a couple thousand hits to the website every week is nice, this only results in up to $1/week in Google ad revenue. The designs that I sell on the site at BitterBliss.com/shop also do their bit, but only add $20-40/week to my coffee fund. I guess the next option that I've been avoiding until now is direct sponsorship/advertising, as a paywall for a member's only area just isn't my thing.

I'd like to think that I provide some value to coffee addicts like myself out there, but need a Patreon or Gofundme like income stream to help cover expenses. But what do you think? What is valuable for you? How much would you be willing to give?

Anyway, now that the BitterBliss redesign is coming along nicely, I just needed to vent a little to help me focus. Would be really interested in any positive suggestions on how I should be adapting to make BitterBliss something that is viable.

+Jason Howell I just finished watching the App Arena and agree, Pocket Casts is an easy winner. The only flaw is that it cannot play videos at increased speeds. Luckily enough, they are flexible enough to allow you to play your files with other external apps.

My favourite app to play back videos for ultimate control (perhaps an app you should try) is BSPlayer. It allows a PIP mode, increased speed, and a heap of other settings.

To play from Pocket casts, rather than pressing play, hold it down to bring up a menu that allows you to play in external apps. Hopefully one day PocketCast will include a feature that allows for video speed variation, but until then, this is a great option.
