Pablo Picasso, Guernica, 1937
Probably Picasso's most famous work, Guernica is certainly his most powerful political statement, painted as an immediate reaction to the Nazi's devastating casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during Spanish Civil War.
Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. This work has gained a monumental status, becoming a perpetual reminder of the tragedies of war, an anti-war symbol, and an embodiment of peace. On completion Guernica was displayed around the world in a brief tour, becoming famous and widely acclaimed. This tour helped bring the Spanish Civil War to the world's attention.
Interpretations of Guernica vary widely and contradict one another. This extends, for example, to the mural's two dominant elements: the bull and... more »

Expedition 35 Commander Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency, Soyuz Commander Roman Romanenko of the Russian Federal Space Agency and Flight Engineer Tom Marshburn of NASA landed their Soyuz TMA-07M spacecraft in Kazakhstan at 10:31 p.m. EDT. The trio arrived at the International Space Station on Dec. 21, 2012. The crew members spent 144 days aboard the space station and a total of 146 days in space. They completed 2,336 orbits around the planet and clocked almost 62 million miles.
The station now is occupied by Expedition 36 Commander Pavel Vinogradov and Flight Engineer Alexander Misurkin of the Russian Federal Space Agency and Chris Cassidy of NASA. They will remain aboard the station to continue research and maintenance until the remainder of the Expedition 36 crew arrives later this month. And since I forgot the #shakespeareanlolcat yesterday, I have two of them today as a result (appropriately enough for #Caturday of course) - here is the first one. The quote is from Hamlet: An eye like Mars, to threaten or command. That would be Mars, the Roman god of war; it comes from Hamlet's description of his father:
See what a grace was seated on this brow;
Hyperion's curls; the front of Jove himself;
An eye like Mars, to threaten and command;
A station like the herald Mercury
New lighted on a heaven-kissing hill:
A combination and a form indeed
Where every god did seem to set his seal
To give the world assurance of a man.
This was your husband.

What Makes a Project Remixable?
As Mako describes in this summary, they found that the projects that were most remixed were neither overly complex (too intimidating) and finished, nor overly vague and undefined (too uninspiring). The Scratch dataset was a good one to study here, because it includes the number of times each project was viewed as well as the number of remixes it inspired, allowing the authors to calculate the probability that a project will inspire a remix while controlling for its overall popularity

Heart on fire: Our galaxy's black hole is set to blow
The dark monster at the centre of the Milky Way has been a gentle giant – but that could change this year as it gets its first meal for centuries. The centre of our galaxy is a place of extremes. "It has the highest density of stars, the fastest-moving stars, the most concentrated reservoir of gas and the strongest magnetic fields in the galaxy," says Mark Morris, an astronomer at the University of California, Los Angeles. And lurking at its very heart is the most enigmatic object of all: our galaxy's very own supermassive black hole.
Known as Sagittarius A* – SgrA* for short – this dark presence whirls stars around at speeds approaching 20 million kilometres per hour, and is as massive as 4 million suns. Yet it is a docile monster. It merely snacks on the tenuous interstellar gas, which emits a faint... more »

Bystander Intervention
This is an issue that has been discussed for decades; we've hear of Kitty Genovese.
Perhaps two years ago I intervened in what might be termed a domestic dispute, in which a guy was physically beating a woman. I did halt that attack, and did call the police, but the police never arrived, and never took a report, even though I had an auto license plate number.

May 4 is the 43rd anniversary of the Kent State Massacre
This was a seminal event in my life. I was only 4yrs old and watched it live on TV. It was one of my earliest moments of 'awakening', to see armed government thugs commit outright murder against innocent and peaceful protesters and passing observers. They looked just like many of the important people in my life at the time - young, vibrant, concerned, and involved young adults. I clearly remember turning and asking my mother why the soldiers were killing the flower children and she tried to explain to me that sometimes it was necessary for the government to use violence in such justifiable ways. Any faith I had developed in my parents and 'The System' was killed that day.

Coronal Mass Ejection
A coronal mass ejection (CME) erupted from just around the edge of the sun on May 1, 2013, in a gigantic rolling wave. CMEs can shoot over a billion tons of particles into space at over a million miles per hour. This CME occurred on the sun’s limb and is not headed toward Earth. A video taken in extreme ultraviolet light by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), covers about two and a half hours.

Velvet Worm - Slime Guns
The velvet worm - among the phylum, Onychophora - hunts by shooting fast drying adhesive at its prey and yes, I know what you’re thinking. The segmented worm-like organism can range from 0.5 to 20cm long and slime glands are located in the center region of the body making up about 11% of the total body weight in slime which is made mostly of water and some proteins.

Why do cats open their mouths after a good sniff?
Cats have an amazing sense of smell, an order of magnitude better than that of a human. Part of their odor-detecting prowess is a piece of anatomy known as Jacobson's Organ, also known as the vomeronasal organ. Attached to the roof of the mouth, the organ consists of a pair of fluid filled sacs and is connected directly to the olfactory bulb. It's used to detect non-volatile organic compounds.
The teeth-baring behavior seen in the video is called a "flehmen response" (German for baring the teeth), and any animal with a prominent vomeronasal ability will do it: horses, giraffes, llamas, and others, although it's strongest amongst the cat family. By opening its mouth in this fashion the animal is able to pull the chemical cues over the organ and get a really good taste of the smell (so to speak).... more »
