The Harmony of Japan || 大和の魂

The feeling of the cool fresh air as the cherry blossoms gently sway in the soft morning breeze. The beauty of the Sakura in full bloom as they cradle the pagoda and perfectly compliment the red hues with their subtle warmth. The stunning view of Mount Fuji through a clear and yet nicely textured sky. These words only begin to describe the emotional impact that standing in the location has on my soul.

Burning Sky || Iceland

I had a wild dream last night where I was driving around in Southern Iceland and the sky was burning around me in every direction in fiery red hues. My emotions seemed to mirror the sky as I frantically searched for the perfect place to stop to take a photo.

Each time I’d stop the car and pull over, the powerful colors would quickly start to fade from the sky. When I’d get back on the road and pick up some speed, the sky would burn again with powerful ferocity. After a few attempts with the same frustrating results, I realized that my mistake was focusing too much on the destination, while forgetting to simply stay on the path and enjoy the view.

Beyond The Vatican || Rome

On my last day in Rome after wrapping up our most recent Italy Photo Tour, my friend Gaia asked me if I ever get tired of visiting the same places over and over again. "As a photographer," she asked, "don’t you get bored with the same locations?"

This is something I’m asked fairly often and my answer was an honest one. I told her that I never get tired of visiting the same places because it gives me the opportunity to see things in a new way, and attempt to capture them with new eyes and a fresh style. It’s something that I always strive for—the ability to create something new and unique out of the familiar—to break mold, even if only by a small degree.

A Drone in Italy

If you missed my review earlier this week, here’s an edit of some of the drone footage I recently captured with 7 days in Italy. It was filmed entirely with a +DJI Phantom 3 Professional Quadcopter and edited with Adobe Premiere Pro. Additional color correction was applied using Adobe After Effects and a little bit of Photoshop.

For the past six months I’ve had a wonderful time flying my DJI Phantom Quadcopter and now I’m excited to share the results!

Here’s an in-depth review of the new Phantom 3 Professional based on my experience flying and shooting in Italy through Rome, Florence, Tuscany, and Cinque Terre. I also share the story of how I learned to fly and how my perspective on the world has completely changed after seeing it from the air in beautiful 4k resolution.

As usual, if you’re not in the reading mood, there are plenty of colorful photos and videos to view as well!

The Moments Between || Beautiful Cinque Terre

Well, now that I've seen Le Cinque Terre for the air, I can officially confirm that it's absolutely stunning from every angle. It really is one of the most beautiful places on the planet with its harmonious blend of both classic architecture and dramatic landscape. Flying my DJI Phantom 3 here over the past two days has been a truly awesome experience.

Cinque Terre will always have a special place in my heart as it was one of the first places I visited years ago when I was aggressively building my photography portfolio. Since then, I've visited many times and I don't think I'll ever get tired of photographing these extraordinary views. It's also such a pleasure to bring people here on our Italy Photo Tour and get to see their smiling faces as they see these villages for the first time.

The Moments Between || Tuscany From Above

With all of the time I've spent in Tuscany, I was already convinced that it's likely one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Now, I can honestly say that seeing this magnificent landscape from the perspective of my DJI Phantom 3 has solidified that belief into an absolute fact. What a special treat it has been to experience this place both on my feet and in the air. It's just like falling in love all over again.

I can't wait to share some of the results soon. :)

The Moments Between || Epic Tuscan Sunrise

Even though I've visited this location many times, yesterday's sunrise was one of the best I've ever seen. The quality of light combined with the different layers of fog caused a spectacular display of stunning colors and textures that lasted well into the morning hours. Of course this already wonderful morning was made even more special by all of the smiling faces from the awesome group of people that have joined us on this years Italy Dram Photo Tour.

The Moments Between || Piloting Rome

I must admit that the location choice for my first +DJI Phantom 3 flight was a slightly ambitious one. While The Roman Forum looks magnificent from above, the authorities here are probably not too keen on personal drone flights, but to my surprise, no one around seemed to mind or give me any hassle.

The seagulls on the other hand, were not happy about the flying intruder and quickly started swarming and diving aggressively at the P3. I wasn't so much concerned for the drone's safety but more so the well being of the birds. Even a brief contact with a prop could've easily caused an injury and I'd hate for that to happen. It was a good lesson on not only taking extra care to respect the cultural site but also the place that these birds call home.

The Moments Between || The Phantom Configuration

What do 3 cameras, 8 lenses, and a new +DJI Phantom 3 Pro with full accessories all have in common? Well, aside from all fitting perfectly into the new +Think Tank Photo Airport Helipak, they’re also going to make this year’s Italy Photo Tour a lot of fun!

Seriously, I’m not only impressed that this bag transports all of my gear perfectly, there’s also quite a bit of room to spare. This is great because prior to this new configuration, I was carrying around the Phantom 2 in the pelican case (on the left) and hiking even a few short kilometers with that combined with a full camera backpack was taxing on the body to say the least. Sure, the peli case offers solid protection with the props attached but in my opinion, removing one bag entirely is always a good idea when you’re working in the field. On our Italy Photo Tour this year, +Naomi Locardi and I will actually be shooting with both the P2 and the P3 since we have already have them both with us. She’s also kind enough to help me carry everything. :)

The Moments Between || Singaporean Views

From Japan to China to Singapore, it’s been an incredible (and insanely) busy two months that have been filled with epic views, awesome presentations, and great meetings with good friends and colleagues, both old and new. It has been a whirlwind of events and it’s such a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with so many awesome and talented people!

Though Singapore was mostly about prepping for future projects and getting ready for our Italy Dream Photo Tour next week, I did manage to shoot an awesome new perspective, and wow, what a view! With the super high plexiglass wall, It was also the perfect shooting location for my +Really Right Stuff Safari clamp and +Fujifilm X-T1.

The Old City of Mostar || Herzegovina

Sometimes when I visit certain places in the world, I’m completely surprised just how quickly they can capture my heart. Mostar in Herzegovina is the perfect example because while I knew that Stari Most (the old bridge) would be an excellent subject to photograph, I had no idea how much I’d fall in love with the charming old city.

From the moment we arrived and throughout the entire time we were there, we had a wonderful experience getting to know the local people and learn about their rich and historic culture. Mostar is definitely somewhere I plan to spend more time in the future.

The Moments Between || Phantom 3 Fun

After wrapping up a few awesome and very busy speaking events in Beijing, it was nice to relax in Shenzhen for a few days, while enjoying time with good friends, and making some great new contacts.

While I was in town, I had the pleasure of flying the new Phantom 3 at DJI Headquarters in their official testing area. After being such a huge fan of the Phantom 2, it’s unbelievable how many improvements they’ve made with the new Phantom 3. Where the P2 was already easy to fly, the precession responsiveness and extra power of the new P3 is out of this world. I think this little guy is going to be a huge game changer and I’m eagerly counting down the days until they ship in May.

Once again it’s time to say goodbye to beautiful Japan. Each time I leave it’s with a heavy heart, as I can’t help but feel a special connection to this wonderful country. Whether I’m photographing a beautiful location, or just sitting in a quiet shrine, I always feel at peace and in many ways, at home. And for someone  who hasn’t had a home for more than 3 years, that’s a feeling that truly means a lot to me.

Thank you Japan for a wonderful Sakura season. I’m already looking forward to the next one!

Vermillion Tide - 朱色の潮流 || Japan

When I first started researching photography spots in Japan a few years ago, I had a feeling that the Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima had the potential of being spectacular, but I had no idea how amazing it could be at the peak of low tide. During the mid - high tide, the Grand Torii Gate is designed to seem as though it’s floating on top of the water, which is a wondrous sight - and I recently posted a photo a few weeks ago that reflected that spectacle of golden reflected sunlight.

When the tide goes out, so do the crowds of people as they enjoy the opportunity to walk through the giant beautiful gate and enjoy the view at ground level. Now after experiencing it both ways, I have to admit that I’m a bit torn on which way I like to photograph it the most. I guess that just means I’ll need to visit again sometime soon to be sure.:

Next stop, Beijing and Shenzhen, where I’ve been invited to speak at a series of prestigious photography events. The Moments Between || Himeji Castle Flight

After years of restoration, the recently re-opened Himeji Castle is a masterpiece of beautiful Japanese History. Not only does it look amazing from all around the castle grounds, it also looks unbelievable from the air, especially in the soft golden light of the afternoon.

Using my +DJI Phantom 2 and +GoPro 4 Black, I was able to capture some stunning high resolution aerial footage. I can honestly say that flying drones for video is quickly becoming one of my favorite activities. :)

The Harmony of Japan || 大和の魂

The feeling of the cool fresh air as the cherry blossoms gently sway in the soft morning breeze. The beauty of the Sakura in full bloom as they cradle the pagoda and perfectly compliment the red hues with their subtle warmth. The Moments Between || Osaka Castle Sakura

There's just something special about the Sakura season in Japan that keeps us visiting again and again. It's not just because the cherry blossoms are beautiful, it's also because everyone in Japan is in such a great mood when the trees are in bloom. You can feel the cheer in the air as so many people gaze at the flowers with huge smiles on their faces, while couples hold hands and families have picnics underneath the beautiful flowery canopies. It's a wonderful thing to experience.

The Moments Between || Japan + Fujifilm = Awesome

Of course no trip to Japan would be complete without adding some exciting new Fujifilm gear to the family!

With so many back-to-back projects, the past four months have flown by and I've been waiting for the opportune time to make some fun new upgrades. Thankfully, with about 10 days worth of rain in the coming weather forecast, the timing couldn't be more perfect. Having a 100% water sealed graphite X-T1, 16-55, and 50-140 is going to come in really handy while I continue to chase the sakura and scout locations for next year's photo tour. :)

I've been shooting with everything you see here for a solid few days now so if anyone has any questions, feel free to shoot them my way.

Floating on Light || Itsukushima

It’s almost surreal to think that this is the third year in a row that Naomi and I have spent spring in Japan. It’s our favorite time to be here and though there are countless cherry blossom trees blooming all around us, there are also plenty of places to visit that remain timelessly beautiful no matter what season it happens to be. The Itsukushima Shrine definitely tops that list and at high tide, the Grand Torii Gate is designed to seem as though it’s floating on the water. For photography, this is one of my favorite sunset spots in all of Japan.

The sun itself is very important in Japan’s history as the Japanese name for Japan, Nippon (or Nihon), literally means “the sun’s origin.” This is also commonly translated into “the Land of the Rising Sun,” which we’re all more commonly familiar with in the west. Interestingly enough, this nomenclature also has to do with the Chinese Sui Dynasty by referring to Japan’s eastern position relative to China. I know that this is a photo of a sunset, but with the sun correlation, I thought it was close enough to warrant the history lesson. ;)

On another (more exciting) note, we’ll soon be announcing the full details of our Dream Photo Tour to Japan next April which will focus on exploring ancient castles, fascinating landscapes, serene shrines, iconic pagodas, and of course some of the most beautiful cherry blossom viewing areas on the planet. Like all of our tours, local food and historic culture will play a huge role and each meal we plan will be nothing short of epic. :)

We’re currently accepting pre-registration here: http://bit.ly/DreamJapan

The Moments Between || Kurashiki

I’ve been having a great time visiting some new spots in Japan over the past week, including the old town area of Kurashiki. With the classic architecture and beautiful canals spanned by stone bridges, I thought it would be the perfect place to shoot panoramic images with my Fujifilm X-T1 and test out some new prototype gear from +Really Right Stuff.

You’ll likely see this new pano gear become available in a few months and it’s designed to be an ultra light weight and portable solution for shooting seamless multi-row panoramic images. Thought I’ve also tested it thoroughly with a Pro DSLR (to which it performs very well), with its compact size, it’s more perfectly suited for all types of mirrorless bodies and lenses since they have a smaller over all profile. It’s cool to know that no matter where I happen to be in the world, the awesome team at +B and H can always get me the gear I need for a project. In this case, with a short 48 hour stopover in Sydney, they coordinated a shipment to meet me there, and I was able to grab a new DJI Phantom 2 before heading to China, Japan, and Italy for two solid months of scouting, workshops, and photo tours. This is going to be fun!

If you’re curious, here’s the exact Phantom Kit I’ll be using along with a +GoPro Hero 4 black.

Test of Time || Petra, Jordan

There are places in the world where photography will always pale in comparison to the simple act of being there in person, and experiencing the moment with all of the magic it contains. And though I try to capture the feeling of these moments to the best of my abilities, I know that at best, I’ll only be able to spark a small portion of a true emotional response. My hope is that it’s enough to inspire people to visit these places, and experience it for themselves.

I also believe that seeing beautiful destinations for the first time is a once in a lifetime experience that can only be matched by seeing it again through someone else’s eyes. That’s one of the reasons I love leading Photography Tours because it’s a way for me to relive some of the same sense of awe and inspiration that flooded my senses on my very first visit. Even better is the fact that I get to share these places with so many great people from all walks of life and help them get the best out of their photography there.

I couldn’t be happier to announce that Ken Kaminesky and I will be leading a Dream Photo Tour to Jordan this November. We invite you to take a step back in time with us as we visit the ancient lost city of Petra and the Greco-Roman ruins of Jerash, float on the Dead Sea, ride a camel with local Bedouin people in the vast desert of Wadi Rum, and discover ancient culture that dates back millennia.

After 29 days in New Zealand and 80 days on the road with the +Fstoppers, it's 2:30am here and as I post this, I'm also packing up to leave on a 5:30am flight.

If you’ve been following me on social media over the past few months, you’ve probably noticed lots of behind the scenes images about this massive project we’ve been working on together that is set to be the most comprehensive educational landscape, cityscape, and astrophotography video tutorial available on the market. And as I write these words, It feels surreal to think that after so much work together, we’ve managed to capture everything we needed in each worldwide location. All that’s left is another visit to Charleston where we’ll wrap up the interviews, voice overs, and most importantly, the extensive post-processing demonstrations where I’ll be covering every trick and advanced technique I use to craft myimagery.

Beyond Kotor Bay || Montenegro

With so much going on over the last few months and so many projects on my plate, Its been tricky to find the time to process new shots for my photography portfolio. As a result, this shot of Kotor has been put on my post-processing back burner ever since we visited Montenegro early last October.

Kotor is an outstanding place for photography especially when you hike to a few of the views above the old city. I’m happy to finally get around to editing it since it’s also a good chance for me to add some more locational diversity to my portfolio since I tend to focus so much on personal favorites like — in case you hadn’t noticed — Italy. ;)

Thought the article, I also talk about why I think each location is so spectacular for photography, but if you don’t feel like reading, no worries. Feel free to just browse through the pretty pictures. :)

Reflections of Bled || Slovenia

On my Instagram Profile, I say that I’m "seeking out the most beautiful destinations in the universe,” and I love to romanticize the thought that someday that statement may come true and I’ll somehow be able to explore and photograph more than just planet Earth. For now though—and granted that I only have a localized earthing perspective on this—I really feel like there’s no end of wonderful things to experience, and fascinating subjects to photograph here.

Out of many Earthly locations, Lake Bled in Slovenia had been topping my list for quite some time, so with a few extra days between massive projects last November, Naomi and I decided to make it happen. Unfortunately, we missed the first snow fall but on the plus side, we were still able to catch the tail end of the fall colors.

The Moments Between || Mt Cook

After hiking 8 kilometers into the Hooker Valley, the sunset view of Mt. Cook was absolutely spectacular. Once we had our cameras were in place, we pitched our tents and prepared for an epic night of shooting the starry sky. It was by far one of the best experiences of our entire time here in New Zealand.

The Moments Between || The Lone Tree

After visiting this spot a few times over the past few years, I'm totally convinced that it I was planted just for photographers. ;)

Seriously though, it's a really great spot for sunrise photography and the perfect scene to do some long exposures with my Formatt-Hitech Firecrest filters.

Last time the lake bed was dry so I'm really excited to share some new versions soon!
