Considering how ignorant and selfish the average voter is, this doesn't surprise me.

So the failure of O’Malley’s climate-focused campaign is better understood as a lesson in how to approach the issue than proof that almost no one really cares about it. O’Malley is a technocrat, and he talked about climate in a technocratic way, telling me, for example, “This is the time of appreciating the system-ness of things.” Sanders speaks the language of secular, liberal morality. He puts his climate agenda into the same framework he uses for nearly everything else — pitting the people against powerful corporations and their greedy executives. That seems to draw a more enthusiastic response.

Within the Glass (Tarragon Theatre) and other things

http://tarragontheatre.com/show/within-the-glass/

I'm afraid I'm noticing an ever more pronounced trend in the arts: as science continues to advance, inherently faulty reasoning by artists with little or no scientific and philosophical training is leading, by way of the public nature of their works, to a citizenry distracted and even accepting of beliefs that actually cause harm.

Such is the case of Within the Glass, currently playing at the Tarragon Theatre. As with so many plays I've seen lately, this one was wonderfully executed, but is mortally flawed in its story and in the premises that underlie it.

Within the Glass (Tarragon Theatre) and other things

I'm afraid I'm noticing an ever more pronounced trend in the arts: as science continues to advance, inherently faulty reasoning by artists with little or no scientific and philosophical training is leading, by way of the public nature of their works, to a citizenry distracted and even accepting of beliefs that actually cause harm.

Such is the case of Within the Glass, currently playing at the Tarragon Theatre. As with so many plays I've seen lately, this one was wonderfully executed, but is mortally flawed in its story and in the premises that underlie it.

Within the Glass tells the story of a meeting of two couples, both seeking to have children by artificial means. Unfortunately, the fertility clinic both couples used accidentally switched the embryos for each couple, and only one took. So Linda is carrying Darah's and Micheal's baby. Linda's and Scott's baby, which was implanted in Darah, didn't take. Micheal and Darah invite Scott and Linda to their house for dinner to discuss what should be done.

And chaos ensues.

The first and most glaring problem with the play is the extreme and archetypal nature of the characters. Linda is a performance artist who is so utterly submerged in the subjective, she wouldn't know an objective truth if it came up and shook her hand. Her husband Scott is also an artist, a poet, but one of those Hemingway-esque manly artists who is fine with defining proper behaviour as that which appeals to base instinct. As such, he teeters on the edge of being one of those abhorrent Men's Rights Activists who twist facts to suit their patriarchal and misogynistic beliefs. Darah is the self-absorbed, obsessive-compulsive corporate automaton driven to seek attention no matter what is at stake. And Michael is a corporate banker, willing to do and say anything to close a deal. These are caricatures of real people; their behaviours are so extreme that they simply will not happen in real life. Unless, of course, we mean to be interested in the thoughts of people so lacking in personality as to be clinically delusional. But why would we be? As a result, the play becomes an encyclopedia of ridiculous statements and behaviours utterly disconnected from reality.

Don't get me wrong; I thought the acting was great. The actors were clearly heavily invested in their roles and this came out in their impassioned performances. But when actors are given tripe to work with, there's very little they can do to fix it.

The second major flaw of the story is the assumption that subjective experience is as valuable as objective fact - that what one "feels" is just as important, if not more so, than what one knows. This seems to be a systemic flaw in society these days, and if unchecked it will only push humanity ever closer to extinction. It's certainly true that subjective experiences are objectively real, but the content of those experiences is highly suspect and must be treated as such, especially in light of the ever-growing and ever more robust body of scientific knowledge that we are accumulating. Where subjective experience collides with objective fact, the latter must always be preferred to the former.

In this play, however, objectivity simply plays no role. Linda is so overcome by her life experience, her training in the arts, and, to be frank, the neurochemical changes of pregnancy, that she is utterly unable to reason. Objectively, Linda is highly distraught, desperate to find a solution to her untenable and tragic situation; her feelings are real, and they embody the chaos of the situation generally. But that does not mean that her opinions and demands are to be taken as equal to those of more reasoned and objective persons. While Linda's particular position is completely understandable, it cannot be used as the foundation on which to expect an outcome that maximizes wellbeing of all the participants. She lies, contradicts herself, and acts in ways that, under normal circumstances, would be indicative of significant mental disorder.

But she's pregnant, so it's all okay, right?

Seriously?

Of course we can empathize with her, at least to a degree. It's natural, it's evolved instinct, it's human. Only a psychopath wouldn't be able to emphasize.

But everything she does and says undermines her believability, her relationship with her husband, the possibilities of a successful outcome to the events of the play, and her own wellbeing - not to mention the wellbeing of the child she's carrying. It's one thing to accept one's subjective experiences, to reflect and learn from them. It's quite another to let one be ruled by them, abandoning all reason, and allow oneself to become a blubbering mass of uncontrolled instinct, primitive and inhuman.

And it's not just Linda. The same can be said of all the other characters, especially given their archetypal and therefore oversimplified design. Regardless of gender, background, or experience, every character in the play is basically unhinged. From nowhere comes the voice of reason. And to nowhere does the story lead, spiralling uncontrolled into the abyss.

The third major flaw is the premise that both couples would agree to meet rather than work through lawyers. The excuse given in the play is that Linda and Scott cannot afford a lawyer. That’s pretty thin. At very least, Darah and Michael’s lawyer should have done something - anything - to keep the couple apart. While I’m the first to make fun of lawyers for all the ridiculous things they say and do, the profession of lawyering is not without merit. Most importantly, they provide a buffer to keep people confronting one another from getting carried away; they introduce a source of reason - guided, though not always well, by the law - to help resolve problems rather than escalate them.

And beyond lawyers, there are an assortment of therapists, counsellors, and mediators who could have gotten involved.

No. I’m sorry. Within the Glass is just a terrible mistake. And anyone who believes that subjectivity can defeat objectivity is just helping to destroy society.___

That's because religion is irrational and can be used to "prove" either side of an argument. Which makes it vacuous at best and catastrophic at worst.

Everything was fine till I added the 5th item. The more items I add, the more "off" it gets.
Not a showstopper, but still it'd be nice to have a fix eventually....

Some thoughts on the new X-Files, Episode 1

Caveat lector: Some people may believe there are spoilers here. I don't think so, but my definition of "spoiler" may not be the same as yours.

I liked it. I know some people didn't, but I did. I thought the chemistry between Mulder and Scully is still excellent. I thought the pacing was good and the overall story of the episode was in keeping with the whole X-Files thing.

I imagine people who are disappointed are picking on the... change in direction of the "mythology" side of the show. But seriously folks, this ain't the 90s any more. Everything's changed, and it makes sense that the show's direction change too.

I also liked Joel McHale's character - both so right and so wrong at the same time. The kernel of truth at the centre of every crazy conspiracy theory, and all that. Tad O'Malley is a character you love to hate and hate to love. Very frustrating - and interesting.

And it was great to see William B. Davis again.

There were two things that didn't really work for me.
1. Mulder's rant to Scully on the porch. Mulder's pronouncements struck me as a little too unhinged, even for him. Or maybe Duchovny's delivery was a little too deadpan to fit the words. It just seemed to me that Scully should have pulled a Cher: smacked him one and said "Snap out of it!"
2. The whole historical background to explain the change in direction. Seemed to me they were just explaining how Hydra came into being. Unless they're planning a crossover with the Marvel Universe, I wonder if they couldn't have done that differently.

Still, overall, I'm glad to see a show that has managed to not just recycle 15 yr old ideas. I'm really looking forward to the rest of "Season 10."___

And I bring all that experience to beat when I wrote this: Principal Tommy Hodges of Edmonson County High School in Kentucky - you are a useless, misogynistic bag of skin who would be unfit to test paper clips let along run a school.

Stupidest watch ever.
"Resolutely masculine" my ass. This is strictly for metrosexual overcompensators and narcissists.

I can't believe this is still a thing.
What's so fucking hard about this? Gender is irrelevant to pay. Only merit and ability matter.

Student does the right thing; gets suspended.

If you could easily and safely help a child having an asthma attack, would you do it? Or would you wait for permission to do it?

Apparently, the inbred fuckers at Gateway Middle School in Killeen, Texas, need permission. And everyone got on our protagonist's case because he said "fuck it" when he decided to carry an asthmatic classmate to the nurse. And then he was suspended.

Well, fuck. As far as I'm fucking concerned, this young man is a fucking hero not only for doing the right fucking thing but also for standing up to the nutless, pencil necked fuckwads who run that fucking school.
