I need more games.

That is to say, I want a JRPG-style game (although in English, thanks, since I can count to five and order sushi in Japanese) that I have not played before, and that is available for a PS2 or earlier console or for a Windows 7 PC. I have all the Final Fantasy games through 12, and assorted other SNES and PSX/PS2 games.

I also need it to be cheap, by preference. Immediately available wouldn't be a bad idea either, and my Wii is not happy with downloading much of anything.

Many of you know that Abby has a small part in a play at our local children's theatre the first full weekend in August.

Only those who have children in the arts (or were children in the arts) can understand that mix of pride and irritation as she bursts into song and dance for no apparent reason, and gets offended when you ask her to moderate the volume; after all, she is practicing.

Anyway, local types (or anyone, really, if you want to travel), please consider buying a ticket. Or a few tickets.

I am going to the Friday night showing, where I will help at the concession stand, and I will try to buy tickets for other showings as well.

There's the fire danger (which we mitigated with lots of water, legal fireworks in an area it's legal to use them, and stuff that stays on the ground).

And then there's the whole breathing in and out thing, which affects me whether my family shoots off fireworks or not.

<gasp, wheeze>

Conversation with six-year-old neighbor child:

"Where's Lizzy?"
"She's done for the day."
"What does that mean?"
"It's means you're done with our garden hose because it's nine-thirty."
"That means I have to go home?"

Uh, yeah, kid.

Mind you, this is the same child who has been known to park his bike in front of moving cars just so we'll stop and chat, right, +Laston Kirkland?

"Seven-year-old logic: "I sprayed them with the garden hose and now they won't play with me, even after I put away the hose! Waaaaahhhhhh!"

Of course, this is also the same sort of logic we see from politicians, the, "But that was five minutes ago! What do you mean you don't want to play with me now?" sort.

It never occurs to either of them that people - and governments - need more than five minutes to chill out between encounters...

So that's it. Politicians are all still seven years old under the skin.

Sometimes having a very bright seven-year-old makes for interesting conversations. Part of this is because her reading level far outstrips her experience, and that makes finding the balance between age-appropriate and challenging, well... challenging. Here's an example:

Lizzy: Mommy, why is the rainbow a symbol for this marrying thing? Why not a yin-yang?

Me: Well, because yin-yang implies male and female, and the point of the rainbow symbol is that any grownup can marry any other grownup, whether they're a boy or a girl (note: this is all very abstract to her at seven, but we have already explained that kids cannot get married "because it's not appropriate.").

Lizzy: Okay. Squirrel!

(note: not literally squirrel, but that's when she lost interest in the conversation. Inquiring mind, first grade attention span)

Techie types - problem with my mom's TV: let's hope we can troubleshoot. Or my kids will not have TV at Grandma's while I'm at work. Please help us; we can't deal with that for long!

It started when the picture stopped. Could not turn off with remote or switch, finally unplugged and replugged. Problem reoccurred, more rapidly each time. This happens on TiVO and on XBox.

TV is a Westinghouse flat screen, 7 years old. TiVo and Xbox on HDMI ports. Wii and DVD on a switch box. Doesn't work on that input either.

Ideas?

So I have really good month-to-date stats at work, the highest score one can achieve.

That I happened to achieve this on my first anniversary there is a bonus.

That I got a congratulatory eCard from a former manager on this juxtaposition made my day.

That said manager attributes these accomplishments to my "kindness" just gives me a warm little glow.

I aim to be basically kind, and this shows me that I succeed.

Since Abby and I have watched all of the Once Upon a Time available on Netflix, and we have to wait for Season Four to either be available on Netflix or to replay on Comcast, we're starting a new (to her) show.

We tried Xena: Warrior Princess once before but she wasn't interested. This time it's her choice. She does love a good kick-ass, bad-ass female character (see River Song, Emma Swan, the titular Powerpuff Girls and both Raven and Starfire of the Teen Titans).

So Xena and Gabrielle should suit just fine.
