On Track Tips | Wiser Sites1,1896 Vital Steps to Using a Google CalendarThis week we are getting back into our 4 part series on Budget your Life. In part one we met with our three experts, +Phyllis Khare who talked about budget your time, +Lisa Engles  whose topic is Budget your Fitness, and +Stephanie Sims who will discuss Budget your finances. This week we are diving deeper with Phyllis Khare into how to Budget your Time. Phyllis is going to present some strategies from her Google Calendar System, Time Bliss Me that literally transformed my life. http://jtw.bz/TimeBliss It’s an innovative way of using Google Calendar that will give you clarity, productivity and less stress. Does this sound familiar? You wake up stressed. You go to bed stressed. You live in a space of “lack of time” overwhelm, feeling like you've forgotten important things you need to do, feeling two steps behind – all the time… Phyllis used to feel this way. Big time. She was forced into finding a better way of managing herself. It was either that or go crazy – or completely give up on her career! With her back against the wall, she developed a new way to use Google Calendar to schedule her day… and it ended up transforming her life, and mine. http://jtw.bz/TimeBliss She’s going to share 6 Steps to Using a Google Calendar.⇒ Why a To-Do list is a flawed system⇒ Why Checklists DO NOT work⇒ How to use Google Calendar for a mobile office ⇒ What does it mean to have a reality based experience with time⇒ Time-sucking tasks you need to STOP doing right now⇒ Time Management and outsourcingSee you this week on Get on Track, Stay on Track. Oh! and don’t forget to push the BIG red buttonhttp://OnTrackTips.com======================================================Start asking questions now AND invite 2 friends!Did you click "Yes" on the event invite?Push The BIG red button - http://OnTrackTips.com Subscribe on YouTube - http://jtw.bz/YouTubeOTT   Tweet This - http://6 Vital Steps to Using a Google Calendar - Phyllis Khare2014-07-28 19:00:00155G+

ISOOSI Research Engine3,413The #isoosichat  weekly Marketing Discussion hangout with special guest +Jim Hedger joining the regular panel of +Ammon Johns +Bill Slawski and +ISOOSI Research Engine Wishing SEO deadThe articles and stories proclaiming that "SEO is dead" have been a regular occurrence for so long that they are an in-joke in the industry.  While such articles can be easy to laugh off, many feel that they are just one sign of several that the reputation problems for SEO are at critical levels.+Jim Hedger describes himself as: " involved in the SEO field since the days of the dinosaurs" which puts him right alongside +Ammon Johns as one of those rare 'Living Relics' of the industry who manage to stay completely relevant despite all the changes. +Bill Slawski has been around almost as long too, but people like Bill too much to keep pointing out his age.We asked all three of these luminaries about their marketing plans for the rest of 2014 and none of them had "to be dead" on the list.  Obviously, this makes them a perfect panel for discussing the long running death wishes against SEO, the many attempts to create standards, and other reputation issues of Search Marketing.Join us as we examine just why SEO is perceived to have such a terrible reputation.  Why are 'standards' and 'regulation' so often asked for, yet also derided, suspect, and unacceptable?Links:HOA Event Page: http://isoo.si/Cg7w2 Watch on YouTube: http:ISOOSI Tuesday Marketing Chat. ISOOSI Research Engine3,413Resistance to SEO - when professions collide with +Susan Finch  and +Michelle Lowery  In this show, we look at how and why some professionals, including bloggers, Usability types, web devs, and sales copywriters, have a negative and dismissive view of SEO.  Despite the success stories, and the huge demand for SEO generally across the board, the negative reputation in many places is still very apparent, with SEO professionals often still treated as though peddling snake-oil to the gullible.+Susan Finch  has said "Coming from a PR/Marketing background since way back, I've always felt true content was king. Never been a fan of working SEO. I'm in the dismissive corner due to watching the negative affect "SEO professionals" have caused clients and others. I've worked hard in the past with clients to undo the damage by the snake oil types. Has left a bad taste in my mouth."She's not alone. It is all too easy for SEO professionals inside 'the echo chamber' to hear primarily only from people who understand SEO and believe in it.  In the wider world, a great many people who have strong input on websites are quite dismissive of SEO, having primarily seen only the kind that appears in a million spam emails.+Michelle Lowery suggested the topic for this week, as she has close ties to the SEO world, but also gets to see the views that some other copywriters have about SEO.There are still a great many bloggers, for just one example, who think SEO is an unnecessary measure - you just create good articles and content and Google will figure it all out.  Others have read a few too many of the "SEO in 10 easy steps" articles who think that those ten steps are all there is.  No matter that around 80% of the websites hit by the Panda update were blogs and bloggers... It isn't just one-sided either.  There are many SEOs of varying skill levels who are dismissive of all the other facets of successful web ventures.  SEOs who mistakenly put an importance on rankings ahead of usability, or conversions - leading to a site that gets lots of people to see how much it sucks.  Heck, even very experienced SEOs sometimes make very dismissive or even disparaging rResistance to SEO - When Professions Collide2014-06-10 21:00:003G+

Jim Munro17,025Why I think TechCrunch nailed it.I think Techcrunch is the pits, gutter journalism, but I also think Alexia Totsis was accidentally right when she diagnosed G+ as terminal. With only her deep throat's information to go on she would not have had enough to make such a huge call. She should have waited to make a careful analysis but that's not how techCrunch operates.I think what's happened since has borne out her wild guess though. She could not have known that Larry Page and Dave Besbris were about to go radio silent apart from a few feelgood and pr posts. The guy who said only two or three years ago "Google is Google+" or vice-versa, has now said in his farewell to Vic Gundotra, "In the meantime we’ll continue working hard to build great new experiences for the ever increasing number of Google+ fans." Sorry Larry but I come to G+ to hear from and learn from my friends as well as find a sounding board for my own opinions. I am not a "fan" and a "great new experience" for me would be a page that loads completely in a reasonable time. Vic Gundotra might as well have said that he'd grown tired of swimming up the waterfall. The new guard does not see G+ as a means of communication. It's clear that they see us as "fans" to be distracted by sparkly things. If they'd wanted to communicate and talk sense to their users, they would have done so by now. Google just failed the test of social media.I won't be leaving G+ until it's most valuable core features are withdrawn. Other ancillary features will live on because there's a compelling business case for them but I don't think it will take many years before some management drone sunsets the core functionality of G+. Much current growth has come from android, once Nokia starts taking big chunks of that market, I think it might be time to start looking for the green exit signs. It's no big deal, all that's required at present is to devise the exit strategy that I did not ever think would be needed. We'll be talking about this and other stuff in the Social Media Fridays HOA, starting in a few minutes.Social Media Fridays 2.2014-05-02 08:01:245G+
ISOOSI Research Engine3,413Ep 23: The agency/client relationship is a complex and sometimes tricky thing. But most of us are on at least one side of such a relationship, and many of us may be on both sides at different times.  Getting these relationships right, making them successful, is something many of us not only struggle with initially, but constantly have to revisit and re-evaluate.Join us for a discussion of the weighty and important issues of how we select partners, or how we offer ourselves as partners to others.  We'll talk about how a company can select a good agency, and the slightly less discussed issue of how an agency needs to select and be choosy with clients. This is another fully interactive show, so please use the comments to raise questions, for our panel and for each other, and to talk about this tricky but fundamental part of business.Join +Tony Dimmock +Barrie Moran  and the +ISOOSI Research Engine    #isoosichat regulars +Ammon Johns, +Bill Slawski, +Carlos Fernandes and +Erik StaffordIs your online agency/client relationship successful?2014-04-29 21:00:0058G+

Bearman Cartoons73,859People Who Paid Attention to My July 1 Morning PostThis morning I posted a benign comment with no image wondering if people are engaged in G+ without images.  I said I would share a circle of anyone that commented and surprisingly many did.  OP: https://plus.google.com/103857459148999991693/posts/ThcDtFipGTDSO WHY SHOULD I CARE?You may ask.  I don't recommend ever blindly adding an entire group of people shared in a circle.  However, so many complain about the Ghost town of G+ where engagement is rare.  These are obviously people who are engaged in the platform.  So pick 5-10 and take a look at their profile.  If you like what you see, circle them and tell them I sent you.  If you don't, move on.What I learned- Circle shares aren't dead.  While many have been lost in communities there is still a place for specific, targeted Circle Shares on G+- Some of my commenters still think they are snarkier than me :)2014-07-01 23:04:169952454CC G+

Ian Archibald7,974Best Engagers on Google✚This is my 3rd oldest circle, created during the Google+ Beta days. There have been a lot of changes in this circle over the last 2+ years. This circle contains many faces that many of you won't know. Others who are very well known. Each have been selected because of their level of engagement either with me or with others. Those who know me know that I am about engagement and collaboration. For those who are in this circle and have not circled back. Please do so. It would be great to collaborate on related activities.  I will be reviewing membership in this circle going forward. I would very much like to keep you in this circle. For everyone else, I would ask that you please consider adding this circle to your own and to share it with people you've circled.  Of course, I would love to hear from you, so please comment and +1 below. If you find that you are not part of this circle, and would like to be, please consider engaging with me.  You can see I have a bit of room in this circle...so let's engage! It's an honour to connect with such amazing people that I would never have connected with on any other social platform.   #CircleShare   #CircleSharing   #sharedcircles   #therustyball   #circleoftheday  2013-12-03 19:24:413209615CC G+

Kai Saffron14,989Saffron's Starter Circle (Top 110)According to G+, this circle is the top 109 people I most regularly interact with, plus yours truly.  I think it's a good-sized circle for newbies to add if you want to liven up your stream, but don't want to be overwhelmed (as can happen with adding circles maxed at 500 active people.).    Remember, you can always uncircle someone later if it turns out they're not your cup of tea.  Think of it as auditioning people.  Like the old saying goes, "nothing ventured, nothing gained".  If you wait for your Faceborg friends to start using their long-abandoned G+ profiles (assuming they even have one), I can tell you right now you may be waiting a very long time, if not forever.  You get what you put into G+.  This platform isn't a collection of walled cities of unchanging social cliques, a.k.a. FB.  It's a social network for the purpose of networking, in the true sense of the word.  So jump in.  Be a leader, not a lemming.  Most of these people don't bite (unless you ask them to nicely).  This concludes our G+ Public Service Announcement. #SharedCircles   #GooglePlus   #GhostTown     #SaffronStarterCircle  2013-08-08 14:51:1311015511CC G+

Dallas McMillan7,412Circle from the land downunder - Australia's top 200 PlussersWho are Australia's most followed people on Google Plus?I've put together this circle of Australia's top 200 profiles (by follower numbers - not engagement - some aren't particularly active) on Google Plus. It's pretty interesting to see the types of profiles which make the cut. Here is my quick overview:By far the most dominant characteristic of the top 200 are photographers - professional and amateur. The other notable individuals are a couple of cricketers in the top 10, a smattering of celebrity chefs, musicians, writers, artists, models and other celebrities. There are also fair numbers of Google employees, IT workers, social media and marketing types as well as a decent number of scientists and mathematicians. The only politician I noticed was Malcolm Turnbull - the Prime Minister and Leader of the opposition are conspicuous by their absence.I got the list from +CircleCount http://www.circlecount.com/au/profileslist/ and I've made a few tweaks - removing a couple of profiles that were inactive or had moved away from Australia. There were a number of others which probably don't belong as they now work in the USA or elsewhere.  #australia   #australianphotographers   #circleshare  I've notified members of the circle - let me know if you don't want to be listed.2013-08-04 14:24:522009213CC G+

Dan Rippon424Around 12 months ago, I came across a shared circle of an "SEO Brains Trust" but I can't recall the name of the person who shared it (sorry if that was you!). Since then I've been adding to, and refining the circle to my own "brains trust", and it's time to share it on... There'll be some you've heard of, some you may not, and obviously some I've missed; but if you're looking to jump start a 123 People in SEO / SEM I Should Follow circle this Sunday, this is as good as any place to kick off...It's pretty broad: bloggers, content marketers, G+'ers, local and technical SEO specialists, conversioneers, inbounders and general marketing types - a hot mix for sure, but I'm sure you'd get value from all of them.I've roughly curated the circle to those that are active here on G+ (and hopefully with more than just dumping links), but I may have skipped a couple if they are particularly well known - perhaps in preparation for when they do see the light? ;)Please feel free to re-share if you find it useful!2013-07-07 09:56:12123916CC G+
Raymond Duke2,369I only use one circle for people I add on G+. This is it. Unfortunately, due to G+'s shortcomings, only 500 people are allowed. Maybe one day they will open it up to more, like Twitter did recently with shared lists. Why do I use just one circle?Because I treat everyone the same. If you are on the internet, it doesn't matter what you do. We are all equal on the web. Our conversations and interactions will determine the context of our relationship, not how I categorize you. 2013-06-20 16:03:47500315CC G+
Lee Smallwood22,777Outstanding Contribution to G+ CircleActions [sometimes] speak louder than words - spoken or otherwise...Which is why I want to share this circle in particular. It contains people that go beyond the norm and their contributions to G+ are second to none. There maybe some familiar faces contained within it and some not so well known... However, together they create an entertaining and thought provoking content stream that I can't do without on a daily basis.Seriously consider adding them to your circles :) #circleshare  2013-05-10 10:51:3613625219CC G+

Almost unimaginable violence Saturday in Camp Spring, Md.: Two people shot, a three-year-old abducted by her father-- and then, that child was shot and killed in a shootout between police and the suspect. News4 at 11 is still on the scene reporting the details of what could have led up to a gun battle on a busy Prince George's street.

Sharing from +Ian Macleod who said:

"Scott Morrison says its safe but the government's advice to Australians wanting to travel to Syria is somewhat different.

"We strongly advise Australians not to travel to Syria because of the extremely dangerous security situation, highlighted by ongoing military conflict, kidnappings and terrorist attacks. If you are in Syria you should depart immediately by commercial means while it is still possible to do so".

I'm sure Scott lives in some strange opposite land where everything he sees and everything he says is opposite to reality.

When will the penny drop? :)

When will it dawn on them that it's the function, not the design, that's the problem?

It's just not socially-acceptable behaviour.

We need permanent Royal Commission-like investigations.

It's not surprising that this article mentions that the political class would like to castrate ICAC. Good, Australia needs something like this in every State and at the Federal level on  a permanent basis. The outcomes speak for themselves.

How many Australians were sucked in by Abbott's grandstanding over 28 lost lives?

Despite a botched "Keystone Cops" operation, the Liberals received a spike in the polls.

Without any other evidence, I guess their election plan hinges on more people get killed somewhere.

Have enough people died yet?

From the article: "The state's child protective services agency is also investigating the incident, which marks the second time this week that a child has been shot by another child after finding an unattended firearm."

He was the same age as me.

As you get older you are slowly but surely sidelined. It's not dramatic. You still have the same skills but you know your output is sub-optimal.

Your health and stamina fades. You still imagine yourself capable but reduced outcomes are a constant reminder of increasing incompetence.

Who knows why death became the only alternative. At this age, prostate and terminal plumbing problems are possibilities because so many of my friends have gone that way but maybe it was the depression that he battled all of his life. Maybe it finally beat him. All I know is another hero is gone and we are left to grieve.

He lived a beautiful life, loved by hundreds of millions and he's left a legacy that won't be forgotten. Good job.

This is an old article but it's topical because of tonight's Four Corners program.

Tony Abbot and George Pell deserve each other, they are a pair of amoral scumbags.

The emperor has no clothes.

Donations to charity as a ranking signal

My opinion is that a search engine should not modify their ranking algorithms for political reasons, even if the intent of the change is laudable. No search engine should start using new ranking signals just to motivate people to do something and we should pay attention to the cause-and-effect relationship behind this phenomenon:

Case A:
Objective: to improve SERP quality
Methodology: find and adopt signals that will improve SERP quality

Case B:
Objective: pushing people to do something
Methodology: adding a ranking signal related to that something, keeping its influence extremely low (so that the signal chosen for non-technical reasons cannot fuck things up) but officially announcing it as a thing important to rankings

Case "B" is not information retrieval, it's propaganda.

For example, Google has not published any official announcement about their new "Pigeon" algorithm, which has changed a few things on the SERPs. Nonetheless, they have published an official announcement about an insignificant ranking signal that probably will not have one thousandth of the impact that "Pigeon" had.

Search rankings have kept their quality because they have been shaped by technical choices. The day that you use organic search rankings as a tool of propaganda or marketing, it's the day that you put at risk the very philosophy behind Search Quality.

This is not the first time that Google did this. They already did it for "website speed as a ranking signal", making people believe for about two years that it was a promoting ranking factor.

I've never liked this philosophy and attitude. Maybe, just maybe, sometimes the end does not justify the means.

Penguin cremated at Mountain View yesterday?

Missing in action, presumed dead, for way too long, some say that Penguin may have been cremated at the GooglePlex yesterday. XRumer driver, +Łukasz Rogala, remarked, "Penguin burned a lot of innocent people, it's only fitting that it turned out this way". Mr Rogala did not attend the ceremony.

We had some extra fun at the Google+ offices in Mountain View yesterday -- a dumpster caught fire. The fire department showed up and the blaze was quickly out, but in the process we discovered that the entire team is, in fact, still five years old, and that people get really excited to watch a fire and a ladder truck and everything.

Sometimes it's good to still be five.___Penguin cremated at Mountain View yesterday?
