Alister Macintyre42,106Do not confuse this circle with the one I have on Native American Indian interests.  My India Circle has people whose lives have either passed thru the great nation of India, are there now, or interested in India.  My interests range world wide, some nations more than others.  I recently started an Asia circle, and tried to pour into it my circles for Australia, China, Japan, India, some other countries, but bumped into another of G+ silly ceilings.  I have circles for several major regions of the world, including Middle East, Eu-W, and Eu-other.  I also have circles for specific nations like Germany and Haiti.2014-03-27 18:26:53148002

Dallas McMillan7,412Circle from the land downunder - Australia's top 200 PlussersWho are Australia's most followed people on Google Plus?I've put together this circle of Australia's top 200 profiles (by follower numbers - not engagement - some aren't particularly active) on Google Plus. It's pretty interesting to see the types of profiles which make the cut. Here is my quick overview:By far the most dominant characteristic of the top 200 are photographers - professional and amateur. The other notable individuals are a couple of cricketers in the top 10, a smattering of celebrity chefs, musicians, writers, artists, models and other celebrities. There are also fair numbers of Google employees, IT workers, social media and marketing types as well as a decent number of scientists and mathematicians. The only politician I noticed was Malcolm Turnbull - the Prime Minister and Leader of the opposition are conspicuous by their absence.I got the list from +CircleCount http://www.circlecount.com/au/profileslist/ and I've made a few tweaks - removing a couple of profiles that were inactive or had moved away from Australia. It is possible to take Apple at their word and accept that they are trying to improve conditions for the workers at their contractors and dismiss their remonstrations as worthless lip service.

That's because this task is impossible when the workforce is being suppressed and being actively prevented from organising on the factory floor. The only people who can push for improvement for Apple's workforce are the workers themselves. They need genuine unions and furthermore, they need union representation at the highest levels of management in order to push for genuine reform.

Even with the best intentions in the world Apple cannot enact reform from above in a top down manner nor can they do it via labour watchdog NGOs. They can only do it through direct engagement with their workers and not through various arms length arrangements with contractors.

Another unsurprising news story:

poor working conditions as Apple factory.

IIRC Foxconn was forced to improve their working conditions, adding a little cost to the production, causing Apple to change to another, cheaper manufacturer...

All of these points apply equally to other tech companies that employ Third World contractors. All these high-tech devices whether they be Androids or Apple are made under sweatshop conditions. Sweatshop conditions that we as consumers demand through our expectations of affordable prices and by turning a blind eye to the reality of how things are made.

The problem for anti-vaxxer ideology is that it originally emerged on the Left as part of an ongoing anxiety and paranoia about "Big Pharma" and the power of evil multinational corporations.

As a consequence, it never found a receptive home amongst the equally paranoid but business friendly parents of the Right. They have plenty of delusions but anti-vax isn't one of them.

Now this viral meme has mutated and has found a way to jump from one species to another. If you worried about herd immunity dropping within the population, just wait until this meme really take hold.

Then there are their similar constituencies: what Politico termed“money men” instantly celebrated Jeb Bush’s likely candidacy, while the same publication noted just last month how Wall Street has long been unable to contain its collective glee over a likely Hillary Clinton presidency. The two ruling families have, unsurprisingly, developed a movingly warm relationship befitting their position: the matriarch of the Bush family (former First Lady Barbara) has described the Clinton patriarch (former President Bill) as a virtual family member, noting that her son, George W., affectionately calls his predecessor “my brother by another mother.”

If this happens, the 2016 election would vividly underscore how the American political class functions: by dynasty, plutocracy, fundamental alignment of interests masquerading as deep ideological divisions, and political power translating into vast private wealth and back again. The educative value would be undeniable: somewhat like how the torture report did, it would rub everyone’s noses in exactly those truths they are most eager to avoid acknowledging.___

The rolling coverage made it all worse. If Monis had actually been a trained jihadi, and not just a murderous arse clown with mental health issues and a gun, the media coverage could easily have contributed to the death of more hostages as part of an ISIS media plan. Some protocols to avoid this in future events – because they will happen – would be prudent. But unlikely.

U.S. TV Provides Ample Platform for American Torturers, But None to Their Victims

Ever since the torture report wasreleased last week, U.S. television outlets have endlessly featuredAmerican torturers and torture proponents. But there was one group that was almost never heard from: the victims of their torture, not even the ones recognized by the U.S. Government itself as innocent, not even the family members of the ones they tortured to death. Whether by design (most likely) or effect, this inexcusable omission radically distorts coverage.

Whenever America is forced to confront its heinous acts, the central strategy is to disappear the victims, render them invisible. That’s what robs them of their humanity: it’s the process of dehumanization. That, in turns, is what enables American elites first to support atrocities, and then, when forced to reckon with them, tell themselves that - despite some isolated and well-intentioned bad acts – they are still really good, elevated, noble, admirable people. It’s hardly surprising, then, that a Washington Post/ABC News poll released this morning found that a large majority of Americans believe torture is justified even when you call it “torture.” Not having to think about actual human victims makes it easy to justify any sort of crime.

That’s the process by which the reliably repellent Tom Friedman seized on the torture report to celebrate America’s unique greatness. “We are a beacon of opportunity and freedom, and also [] these foreigners know in their bones that we do things differently from other big powers in history,” thebeloved-by-DC columnist wrote after reading about forced rectal feeding and freezing detainees to death. For the opinion-making class, even America’s savage torture is proof of its superiority and inherent Goodness: “this act of self-examination is not only what keeps our society as a whole healthy, it’s what keeps us a model that others want to emulate, partner with and immigrate to.” Friedman, who himself unleashed one of the most (literally) psychotic defenses of the Iraq War, ended his torture discussion by approvingly quoting John McCain on America’s enduring moral superiority: “Even in the worst of times, ‘we are always Americans, and different, stronger, and better than those who would destroy us.’”

This self-glorifying ritual can be sustained only by completely suppressing America’s victims. If you don’t hear from the human beings who are tortured, it’s easy to pretend nothing truly terrible happened. That’s how the War on Terror generally has been “reported” for 13 years and counting: by completely silencing those whose lives are destroyed or ended by U.S. crimes. That’s how the illusion gets sustained.

Thus, we sometimes hear about drones (usually to celebrate the Great Kills) but almost never hear from their victims: the surviving family members of innocents whom the U.S. kills or those forced to live under the traumatizing regime of permanently circling death robots. We periodically hear about the vile regimes the U.S. props up for decades, but almost never from the dissidents and activists imprisoned, tortured and killed by those allied tyrants. Most Americans have heard the words “rendition” and “Guantanamo” but could not name a single person victimized by them, let alone recount what happened to them, because they almost never appear on American television.

It would be incredibly easy, and incredibly effective, for U.S. television outlets to interview America’s torture victims. There is certainly no shortage of them. Groups such as the ACLU,Center for Constitutional Rights,Reprieve, and CAGE UK represent many of them. Many are incredibly smart and eloquent, and have spent years contemplating what happened to them and navigating the aftermath on their lives.

I’ve written previously about the transformative experience of meeting and hearing directly from the victims of the abuses by your own government. That human interaction converts an injustice from an abstraction into a deeply felt rage and disgust. That’s precisely why the U.S. media doesn’t air those stories directly from the victims themselves: because it would make it impossible to maintain the pleasing fairy tales about “who we really are.”

When I was in Canada in October, I met Maher Arar (pictured above) for the second time, went to his home, had breakfast with his wife (also pictured above) and two children. In 2002, Maher, a Canadian citizen of Syrian descent who worked as an engineer, was traveling back home to Ottawa when he was abducted by the U.S. Government at JFK Airport, heldincommunicado and interrogated for weeks, then “rendered” to Syria where the U.S. arranged to have him brutally tortured by Assad’s regime. He was kept in a coffin-like cell for 10 months and savagely tortured until even his Syrian captors were convinced that he was completely innocent. He was then uncermoniously released back to his life in Canada as though nothing had happened.

When he sued the U.S. government, subservient U.S. courts refused even to hear his case, accepting the Obama DOJ’s claim that it was too secret to safely adjudicate. The Canadian government released the findings of its investigation, publicly apologized for its role, and paid him $9 million. He used some of the money to start a political newspaper, which has since closed. He became an eloquent opponent of both the U.S. War on Terror and the Assad regime which tortured him as part of it.

But all you have to do is spend five minutes talking to him to see that he has never really recovered from being snatched from his own life and savagely tortured at the behest of the U.S. Government that still holds itself out as the Leader of the Free World. Part of him is still back in the torture chamber in Syria, and likely always will be.

Nobody could listen to Maher Arar speak and feel anything but disgust and outrage toward the U.S. Government – not just the Bush administration which kidnapped him and sent him to be tortured, but the Obama administration which protected them and blocked him from receiving justice, and the American media that turned a blind eye toward it, and the majority of the American public that supports this. But that’s exactly why we don’t hear from him: he isn’t on CNN or Meet the Press or Morning Joe to make clear what Michael Hayden and John Yoo really did and what the U.S. government under a Democratic president continues to shield.

There are hundreds if not thousands of Maher Arars the U.S. media could easily and powerfully interview. McClatchy this week detailed the story of Khalid al Masri, a German citizen whom the U.S. Government abducted in Macedonia, tortured, and then dumped on a road when they decided he wasn’t guilty of anything (US courts also refused to hear his case on secrecy grounds). The detainees held without charges, tortured, and then unceremoniously released from Guantanamo and Bagram are rarely if ever heard from on U.S. television, even when the U.S. Government is forced to admit that they were guilty of nothing.

This is not to say that merely putting these victims on television would fundamentally change how these issues are perceived. Many Americans would look at the largely non-white and foreign faces recounting their abuses, or take note of their demonized religion and ethnicity, and react for that reason with indifference or even support for what was done to them.

And one could easily imagine such interviews quickly degenerating into a blame-the-victim spectacle. When Fareed Zakaria this week interviewed former Guantanamo detainee (and current detainee rights advocate) Moazzem Begg, Zakaria demanded that Begg condemn ISIS even though Begg kept explaining that he was “abused cruelly, inhumanely and degradingly” by the U.S. Government, that “pictures of my children are waved in front of me while I’m being beaten and tortured and abused by people who claimed to be the bastions of freedom and democracy and human rights,” and that “whatever the situation was, the Taliban and the ISIS, they didn’t torture me. They didn’t put me into dungeons. They didn’t beat me. They didn’t threaten to, you know, abuse my family. They didn’t do that to me. So I can only talk to my experience.”

What this glaring omission in coverage does more than anything else is conclusively expose the utter fraud of the U.S. media’s claims to “objectivity” and “neutrality.” Outlets like The Washington Post and NPR still justify their refusal to call these torture tactics “torture” by invoking precepts of “neutrality”: we have to show all views, we can’t take sides, etc.

But that’s pure deceit. They don’t show all sides. They systematically and quite deliberately exclude the victims of the very policies of the U.S. Government they pretend to cover. And they do that because including those victims would be too informative, would provide too much information, would be too enlightening. It would, for many people, shatter the myths of American Goodness and the conceit that even when Americans do heinous things, they do it with Goodness and Freedom in their hearts, with a guaranteed and permanent status as superior. At the very least, it would make it impossible for many people to deny to themselves the utter savagery and sadism carried out in their names.

Keeping those victims silenced and invisible is the biggest favor the U.S. television media could do for the government over which they claim to act as watchdogs. So that’s what they do: dutifully, eagerly and with very rare exception.___

I'm not completely sure what to make of this. Australian wages are definitely more equitably distributed which may be the source of the apparent anomaly relative to the US. But Denmark? Sweden? Other countries have high or higher wages but inequality is more extreme?

Any way I guess it makes more sense to look at things this way than by using the average. Averaging incomes blend the wealth of billionaires with that of paupers and tends to make everyone look better off than they probably are.

The median on the other hand is the numerical value separating the higher half of a data sample from the lower half. It is the metric least likely to be disrupted by the changing fortunes of billionaires.

Great, great article about the demise of American magazine journalism. There are good reasons not to mourn too heavily though. The same writers who sold us the ideology of the great shift to the Right have themselves been reduced to the role of dispensable clerks. Being an esteemed journalist these days doesn't get you a membership to the country club.

The Death of Journalism
An Ode to the Fourth Estate
#journalism   #democracy   #plutocracy

Democracy is dead, journalism is being buried right beside it, and the plutocrats are the new sheriff in town. Wall Street owns one, Silicon Valley owns the other. Good thing we got Smartphones and places to post our cat pictures out of the deal.
Via +James Salsman

Well, it ain’t any more. It has been obvious for some time that the great age of magazine journalism is coming to an end, and also that it is not just the Internet that is killing it.

So who is the culprit? Considering the various journalistic disasters before us today, it seems that we would do well to take our rapidly polarizing class system into account—the insane arrangements that allow tycoons to buy presidential campaigns while journalists and intellectuals become glorified temps.

Plutocrats have always been a self-regarding bunch, but it is obvious that the species of zillionaire that subsidizes magazine journalism today suffer from a form of upper-class delusion that was unknown just 50 years ago. This is because they now know that they are not merely people who got lucky; they are geniuses—everyone tells them so. Chris Hughes, breaker of the New Republic, earned his millions by being Mark Zuckerberg’s college roommate, but nevertheless he was one of the most celebrated figures in publishing a short while ago. When he and his handpicked CEO lapse into indecipherable management talk, they apparently mean it. That’s not a Dilbert joke; that’s the language of genius. (According to a recent story by Chris Lehmann, the same sort of thing goes on at First Look, a troubled journalistic project launched by a different Internet mogul.)___Great, great article about the demise of American magazine journalism. This is how the script goes: publishers in a random EU country decide that Google's search engine is horrible and get the demands that Google pay them money for sending them traffic that makes them a boatload of money. Google says, OK, we don't have to send you traffic. Publishers surrender. Rinse and repeat.

As expected Melbourne's East-West Tunnel project has turned out to be a real lemon.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is under pressure to redirect funds promised for the East West Link after the scrapped project's business case raised serious doubts about its financial viability.

The initial financial case for the project was so tenuous that the former Napthine government decided not to submit it to Infrastructure Australia for fear the figures "may be used as a justification for not supporting the project".

On Monday the new Andrews government released 9000 pages of previously secret documents, including revelations the tunnel would have taken 56 years of toll revenue to pay for construction costs.

Traffic modelling for the six-kilometre link also predicted that the tunnel would have been used by a minority of inbound motorists on the Eastern Freeway in the morning peak, with just 13 per cent of vehicles bound for Melbourne Airport or the western suburbs.

Most Eastern Freeway traffic would have headed to the CBD, Melbourne's inner north or south of the Yarra, the modelling shows. This would have increased traffic congestion on some of Melbourne's busiest roads.

My prediction from Sept 1, 2013. Abbott became prime minister a fortnight later.

1. Australia had to spend big to stay out of the last recession.

2. The Libs think a balanced budget is an economic requirement regardless of circumstances. Hence when in office it will discover a massive budget black hole (they find one every time they take office, its a script) and will feel compelled to slash government services.

3. The Asian economies are slowing so this will translate into a slowing of the Australian economy. Economic stimulus will be ideologically off the table.

4. Growth will stall. Unemployment will rise.

Not rocket science I'll grant you but it's looking pretty good in retrospect.

She's going to be bad news internationally if she gets in.

Hopefully she won't be a total sellout on climate change which is actually a more important issue and greater threat to national security than any human enemy.

Secret: Hillary Clinton is Henry Kissinger's protégée

"""

Even more important and difficult than any of these problems may be the fact that designing a truly new and adequate strategy would require breaking with some fundamental American myths—myths that have been strengthened by many years of superpower status but that go back much further, to the very roots of American civic nationalism. These myths, above all, depict the United States as—in one of Clinton’s favorite phrases—the “indispensable nation,” innately good (if sometimes misguided), with the right and duty to lead humankind and therefore, when necessary, to crush any opposition.
It is the strength and centrality of these nationalist myths that have prevented our elites and the American public from learning or remembering the lessons of Vietnam—a failure that helped pave the way for the disaster of the 2003 Iraq invasion, the consequences of which are still unfolding in the Middle East today. And as Clinton’s entire record—all her writings and all the writings about her—show, she has made herself a captive of those nationalist myths beyond any possibility of escape.

It’s the same old nationalist solipsism: all we have to do is stick together and talk more loudly to ourselves about how wonderful we are, and the rest of the world will automatically accept our “leadership.” This is not a case—as has sometimes appeared with Obama—of a naturally cool and skeptical intellect forced to bow to the emotions of the masses. To all appearances, Clinton’s nationalism is a matter of profound conviction.

And let us be fair: this may help to get her elected president. Once she is, however, it is likely to constrain drastically her ability to shape a foreign policy appropriate to the new circumstances of the United States and the world. Above all, perhaps, it hampers her ability to learn from the past, and from her own and America’s mistakes—a defect blazingly on display in her latest memoir. Instead, even when (on very rare occasions) she does make the briefest and most formal acknowledgment of a US crime or error, it is immediately followed by the infamous statement that we must put this behind us and “move on.” This phrase is dear not only to Clinton, but to the foreign-policy establishment as a whole. It makes any serious analysis of the past impossible.

Of course, one hardly looks for great honesty or candor in what is, in effect, election propaganda—and one must always keep in mind the presence of a Republican Party and media ready to tear into even the slightest appearance of “apologizing for America.” Nonetheless, a passage early in the book did give me hope that it would contain at least some serious discussion of past US mistakes and their lessons for future policy.

Neither in her book nor in her policy is there even the slightest evidence that she has, in fact, tried to learn from Iraq beyond the most obvious lesson —the undesirability of US ground invasions and occupations, which even the Republicans have managed to learn. For Clinton herself helped to launch US airpower to topple another regime, this one in Libya—and, as in Iraq, the results have been anarchy, sectarian conflict and opportunities for Islamist extremists that have destabilized the entire region. She then helped lead the United States quite far down the road of doing the same thing in Syria.

Clinton tries to argue in the book that she took a long, hard look at the Libyan opposition before reporting to the president her belief that “there was a reasonable chance the rebels would turn out to be credible partners”—but however long she looked, it is now obvious that she got it wrong. She has simply not understood the fragility of states —states, not regimes—in many parts of the world, the risk that “humanitarian intervention” will bring about state collapse, and the inadequacy of a crude and simplistic version of democracy promotion as a basis for state reconstruction. It does not help that the US record on democracy promotion and the rule of law—including Clinton’s own record—is so spotted that very few people outside the country take it seriously anymore.

Her book manages simultaneously to repeat the claim that the United States and its allies were only enforcing a no-fly zone in Libya and to try to take personal credit for destroying the Libyan regime. And she wonders why other countries do not entirely trust her or America’s honesty! There is also no recognition whatsoever in her book that those who opposed US military action were in fact right and not “despicable,” to use her phrase about Russian opposition to the US military intervention in Syria. Nor has her disastrous record on Iraq led her to take a more sensible stance toward Iran. On the contrary, in her anxiety to appear more hawkish than Obama, she has clearly aligned with those who would make a nuclear deal with Iran impossible and therefore leave the United States in the ridiculous and unsustainable position of trying to contain all the major forces in the Middle East simultaneously.

This kind of nationalist faith in American strength and American righteousness is no longer adequate to the challenges the country faces. Above all, such a faith makes it impossible to deal with other nations on a basis of equality—not only on global issues or those of great interest to Washington, but on issues that other countries regard as vital to their own interests.
