Alister Macintyre42,106Do not confuse this circle with the one I have on Native American Indian interests.  My India Circle has people whose lives have either passed thru the great nation of India, are there now, or interested in India.  My interests range world wide, some nations more than others.  I recently started an Asia circle, and tried to pour into it my circles for Australia, China, Japan, India, some other countries, but bumped into another of G+ silly ceilings.  I have circles for several major regions of the world, including Middle East, Eu-W, and Eu-other.  I also have circles for specific nations like Germany and Haiti.2014-03-27 18:26:53148002

The awful truth about climate change no one wants to admit

There has always been an odd tenor to discussions among climate scientists, policy wonks, and politicians, a passive-aggressive quality, and can be traced to the fact that everyone involved has to dance around the obvious truth, at risk of losing their status and influence.

This trepidation, incipient two decades ago, has become rank and file of the climate change denialists, even in the face of escalating climate chaos and in the 21st century, replete with advanced scientific discoveries and technologies. The problem is, the denialists are our policy makers who live lives of cognitive dissonance, picking and choosing which science data fits the narrative that will garner them campaign dollars.

The obvious truth about global warming is this: barring miracles, humanity is in for some awful... more »

Even halal certification won't save Aussie Coal's bacon.

The IMF has calculated that even without considering costs associated with climate change, the fossil fuel industry is currently being subsidised to the tune of 5.3 trillion dollars per annum. This cost to the world economy can only rise and emerging players China and India are looking at the alternatives.

Looking forward to the expansion of the definition of "terrorism" to include all forms of political dissent.

Stripping second generation Australians of their citizenship just because they might be eligible to apply elsewhere is certainly setting a new low even for this government. This measure may have faced cabinet resistance but it hasn't been ruled out completely yet.

It's such a shame that Labor under Shorten is so fucking piss weak. They are going to lose the next election and when they do Abbott is going to take that as an increased mandate. Then the draconian shit will really start pumping. Just look at the UK Tories for a guide:

Included in the bill will be controversial measures based on the UK model to also strip nationality from Australians who hold sole Australian citizenship but only if they have legal access to citizenship of another country – getting around international law preventing countries from making people stateless.

This is fucking insane!

Yes. This short lived boost in productivity in the 1990s (usually attributed to the tech sector) has been noted by other economists. John Quiggin has pointed out that it was short lived because it was largely based on increased work intensity: i.e. people working harder for longer hours. Not something that is sustainable in the long term and also not really attributable to just technological improvements.

This is an excellent application of technology. For something to have a real impact, it needs to move away from "corrective" technology and toward "superpowers for everyone" technology. Corrective technologies like eye glasses and contacts have been ripe for disruption for a generation and yet as a niche*, they have remained largely untouched.

Lens replacement surgery is a standard procedure for treating cataracts so the main innovation here is the replacement of a passive lens with an active one. The details are not explained in the article but the promise of improving the eyesight of everyone by 3 x 20/20 vision certainly sounds like a big deal.

Has Tony Abbott ever actually condemned the sexual abuse of children within the Catholic Church? Is he anywhere on the public record as having done so? I am aware he once wrote a glowing character reference for convicted paedophile priest, Father John Nestor, but I cannot recall when he ever made a public statement supportive of the current Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse. Interesting article by Philip Giraldi, a former CIA officer and intelligence analyst. Certainly a lot more interesting than the blather coming out of the White House and its army of media apologists. The operation to eliminate Osama bin Laden really did happen, it's just that everything in the official account has been fabricated to make it sound more dangerous and heroic than it really was.

Shooting an unarmed and unaccompanied bin Laden who was being held as a prisoner and bargaining chip by the Pakistani government based on information from a handsomely paid informant doesn't fit very well into the preferred Hollywood action man narrative.

Shooting an unarmed and unaccompanied bin Laden who was being held as a prisoner and bargaining chip by the Pakistani government based on information from a handsomely paid informant doesn't fit very well into the preferred Hollywood action man narrative.

For what it’s worth, I have known Sy Hersh for more than 15 years and have a great deal of respect for him as a journalist. I am aware of how carefully he vets his information, using multiple sourcing for many of his articles, and I also know that he has a network of high-level contacts in key positions scattered throughout the defense, intelligence, and national security communities. For this article he cites three anonymous U.S. special ops and intelligence sources, three named Pakistani sources, and a number of unnamed Pakistanis. I think I know the identities of at least two of his American sources, both of whom are reliable and have access, while one of his other anonymous sources might well be Jonathan Bank, the former CIA station chief in Islamabad. If Sy says that someone revealed something to him either on background or anonymously, I am sure that he accurately conveys what was said, though that does not necessarily rule out the possibility that the source might be intentionally misleading him or somehow be mistaken.

...So what do I think is true? I believe that a walk-in Pakistani intelligence officer provided the information on bin Laden and that the Pakistanis were indeed holding him under house arrest, possibly with the connivance of the Saudis. I am not completely convinced that senior Pakistani generals colluded with the U.S. in the attack, though Hersh makes a carefully nuanced case and Obama’s indiscreet comment is suggestive. I do not believe any material of serious intelligence value was collected from the site and I think accounts of the shootout were exaggerated. The burial at sea does indeed appear to be a quickly contrived cover story. And yes, I do think Osama bin Laden is dead.___

These glasses work by blocking very specific wavelengths of light. The problem for red-green colour blind people is that because the red and green ranges are so close to each other (in fact they overlap) these people have a problem distinguishing between them. By blocking the wavelengths in the overlap region, it helps the brain separate out the colours and the effect is quite dramatic. Colours that used to be grey-brown now "pop" as either green or red. That also makes composite colours like yellow, purple and aqua really work too.

Very cool.

Fascinating. It seems that there's some evidence that measles infection can cause a kind of "immune amnesia," erasing acquired immunities to other pathogens. That means that if your get measles as an adolescent or young adult, you have to reacquire all the other immunities you built up in childhood. This immune amnesia effect doesn't manifest with the measles vaccine, though. This helps explain why widespread measles vaccination is associated with such a large drop in death by infectious disease in general. Anti-vaccers like to point to the fact that overall infectious disease mortality rates dropped precipitously when the MMR vaccination became widespread, arguing that this shows other factors (e.g. hygiene improvements) are actually more important than vaccinations. This shows why they're mistaken, and gives a mechanism for the general drop in mortality. This is an even stronger reason to promote universal vaccination. ___Via +Aaron Helton

We live in a world of appearances and speak in euphemisms. The bad old ways are long gone. The new ways are the old ways in new clothes.

I am a citizen of a nation in which slavery is legal.

That’s a very hard thing for me to say, and a harder thing still to hear. Hard for me to say, because I have lived my life fighting for the idea that all citizens of our country are equal. Of course, I’ve always had the privilege of having white skin to hide me from the truth. Harder still to hear, because in a nation where slavery is accepted, no one is ever truly a free citizen.

But I can’t hide from the truth anymore. Even the UN Report on Human Rights in the United States pulled no punches when released last week.

http://www.upr-info.org/sites/default/files/document/united_states/session_22_-_may_2015/a_hrc_wg.6_22_l.10.pdf

I’m a lifelong, passionate student of history, and dreamer of the future. The song Imagine was released just before my birth. Born to an anti-Vietnam War hippie mom, who surely sang along to me in my crib the words of her favorite musician. I grew up listening to stories of those who had fought long and hard for equality. I read everything I could get my hands on about the struggles of this country to truly represent the freedom and rights enshrined in our laws.

Slavery was stricken as constitutionally legal with the 13th Amendment. Yet the text itself left former slave owners with everything they needed to ensure they could continue prospering under the enforced labor of others.

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

The system continued with Jim Crow laws. The “former” slaves were kept indebted to the land in the form of sharecropping. Requiring them to only get goods and seeds from the store associated with the landowner, and pay it off at the end of each growing season kept them too poor to leave. And if they did think about leaving, that’s when the laws against certain jobs, living in certain areas, shopping in certain places all applied. It was oh so easy to keep slavery going, because they had the force of law. A black man unknowingly breaking a Jim Crow law would find himself either lynched or imprisoned for a very long term. Almost certainly to work on a chain gang.

And those prison jobs have always benefited the small local county sheriffs and police. They used the prisoners to staff their homes, care for their yards, and do labor for associates. While any profits were immediately pocketed by the police or sheriff.

When Jim Crow officially ended, it was still decades before many could vote, or take any rights of citizens.

But that pesky line in the 13th Amendment stayed there.

The same sheriffs and police that fought to keep Jim Crow alive and well never left their cash cow behind. They stayed in office, and simply continued their normal practices.

As a result, we now have a country that imprisons a far greater percent of our population than any other. That uses terms like “stop and frisk” as an acceptable practice to continue the enslavement and unfair imprisonment.

You might say “Oh, what’s the harm in checking someone to see if they’re breaking the law?”.

The harm comes in the violation of their 4th Amendment rights against illegal search and seizure. And in the overwhelmingly hard-handed use of these tactics against people of color. Even in “liberal” areas like the Bay Area.

http://www.mercurynews.com/crime-courts/ci_28084891/sjpd-data-show-san-jose-cops-detained-greater

A young white man is just as likely to be carrying marijuana as a young black man. Yet that young black man is many more times likely to be arrested for it.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/06/04/the-blackwhite-marijuana-arrest-gap-in-nine-charts/

We’ve grown our prisons for many reasons. For profit prisons are thriving, and have created a huge lobby. That lobby does much to push for “mandatory sentencing”, to ensure that minor crimes or even victimless crimes are punished far longer--so there is more profit per prisoner to be had.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2015/04/28/how-for-profit-prisons-have-become-the-biggest-lobby-no-one-is-talking-about/

Private prisons especially, but also many publicly run ones are continuing to be heavily used for their free/cheap labor. Your business have call center needs you don’t want to pay much for, or outsource overseas? Here’s the place for you! They even take the time to point out to racists that these prisoners speak English!! And their services include a great note Furthermore our agent turnover rate is less than half of the industry norm and the absenteeism rate is practically zero. Because there’s no such thing as a sick day or personal day in prison, and the average prison term is longer than most people can tolerate working in a call center environment outside the prison industry.
http://www.convictionleads.com/services/

The Sheriff’s Union and Police Unions continue to rake in their profits, and have absolutely no incentive to hand over power. And since prosecutors depend on police cooperation to do their jobs, the police don’t get prosecuted for breaking the laws and violating civil rights of citizens. When citizens do try and speak up about the injustice, its easy to shut them down when you control all the power.

http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2015/05/06/3654931/sheriffs-threaten-cut-off-prisoner-phone-calls-cant-get-kickbacks

Slavery is, and always has been, a monetary system. There’s huge profit in enforced labor. Black lives in this country have only mattered as far as the monetary gain that can be stolen from their labor.

And the answer to young black men and others of color is still the same as what it was for Jim in To Kill a Mockingbird. If you refuse to be stopped and imprisoned, if you refuse to be held any longer for crimes you haven’t committed, but merely for the color of your skin, that’s an immediate death penalty offense.

Slavery or death. That’s the inevitable choice of people of color in the US. ___We live in a world of appearances and speak in euphemisms. The bad old ways are long gone. The new ways are the old ways in new clothes.

Because the moon is less habitable than the Venusian atmosphere. Basically nowhere outside of Earth is a good place but Venus is closer to liveable than most other places.

As cool as this is, what I don't get is what you'd do once you're there -- aside from being able to study Venus more intensively (a worthy goal, but...) and learning more about living in space (which could be done anywhere, including in Venus orbit -- which would be much easier than this!). You couldn't dig habitats in the surface, you couldn't mine the surface for minerals; every cubic meter of habitable space would have to be built from materials brought from Earth -- unless you can move a mineral-rich asteroid into Venus orbit... but if you can do that, why not move it closer to Earth instead, and use it to build/supply habitats in Earth orbit?

The only real benefit I can see would be really long-term: use Venus as a guinea-pig for testing climate theories, e.g. blocking a significant portion of solar influx using giant screens in orbit or atmospheric seeding of some kind, where you wouldn't be screwing up anyone's habitat if you guessed wrong. If that works, you could end up with a terraformed Venus and a more thorough understanding of how to reverse the effects of (probably severe by then) global warming on Earth.

...okay, secondary long-term goal: learn how to build habitats for humans in really unpleasant conditions, for whatever reasons we might want to learn how to do that. The nearest environment that comes close to being as ugly as the surface of Venus, survival-wise, is the deep oceans of Earth... and you can survive being outside in that.

To my way of thinking, Luna looks like a much more reasonable goal for habitation: far easier to reach, far easier to escape from... and it has a surface that won't melt your habitat or cook its occupants if the power fails.___Because the moon is less habitable than the Venusian atmosphere. Basically nowhere outside of Earth is a good place but Venus is closer to liveable than most other places.

Abbott tries to reframe this humanitarian disaster as one about people smuggling. You know how to stop the boats, Tony? You address the forces at work that are turning large numbers of people into refugees. There are currently 10 million people dispossessed and forced to leave their countries of origin. They cannot return to their homes and they have nowhere else to go.

People smugglers therefore are only a symptom of this problem. Not the cause. Australia has an obligation as one of the worlds richest countries to help address this problem. We need to help save lives. Turning boats away is not saving lives.

Encouraging your neighbours to abandon their responsibilities is also not helping.

There is absolutely no reason to be optimistic that we will fix this in time. We have enough carbon resources to be able to cook ourselves several times over. We will use them.

The obvious truth about global warming is this: barring miracles, humanity is in for some awful shit.

The image below are a number of climate models, developed by climate scientists. The black line is carbon emissions to date. The red line is the status quo — a projection of where emissions will go if no new substantial policy is passed to restrain greenhouse gas emissions.

We recently passed 400 parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere; the status quo will take us up to 1,000 ppm, raising global average temperature (from a pre-industrial baseline) between 3.2 and 5.4 degrees Celsius. That will mean, according to a 2012 World Bank report, "extreme heat-waves, declining global food stocks, loss of ecosystems and biodiversity, and life-threatening sea level rise," the effects of which will be "tilted against many of the world's poorest regions," stalling or reversing decades of development work. "A 4°C warmer world can, and must be, avoided," said the World Bank president.

But that's where we're headed. It will take enormous effort just to avoid that fate. Holding temperature down under 2°C — the widely agreed upon target — would require an utterly unprecedented level of global mobilization and coordination, sustained over decades. There's no sign of that happening, or reason to think it's plausible anytime soon. And so, awful shit it is.

Nobody wants to say that. Why not? It might seem obvious — no one wants to hear it! They want to hear that it is still possible to limit temperature to 2°C. Even more, they want to hear that they can do so while avoiding aggressive emission cuts in the near-term — say, until they're out of office.

Let's not get too fancy about this. Your burger is not that important when we consider that 6 out 7 billion people are going to need access to a cheap source of protein if we ever hope to end extreme poverty globally. Farmed beef is astonishingly inefficient (apart from also being a major source of greenhouse gas production). We need to be doing less of it rather than more. The scale of factory farming needed to supply chicken as a protein source is just astronomical and fairly horrific to consider. Via +Emlyn O'Regan

Professor Mark Post of Maastricht University, one of the world's foremost experts on synthetic meat, was responsible for that first fully lab-grown burger a few years ago which was generally reviewed as tasting not bad. At the time, it cost nearly a quarter of a million dollars to make - but in a new interview with the Australian Broadcasting Company, he says he's gotten the cost down to AU$80 per kilo - about US$29 per pound. In a few years, this could easily become cost-competitive with ordinary beef, and then even cheaper: cows are, if you think about it, an awfully inefficient way to convert water and grain into protein, going through that whole "life form" business in the interim.

I suspect that it will be a long time until lab-grown meat tastes as good as cow-grown (it's not easy to mimic the fat marbling process in good beef), and in particular lab-grown steaks will be a much longer time coming. But that's far less noticeable in ground beef, and it's not hard to imagine a future where that can be factory-produced far more cheaply than cattle, with cow steak becoming more of a luxury good.

The consequences for human diet and health may be profound: it makes protein suddenly a lot cheaper and easier to come by, even as changing climates can play merry hell with existing ranching.
