It's called shifting the "Overton Window" and regardless of what you think about the sincerity of Clinton, its important that politicians like her are now speaking to progressives about issues that concern them. As recently as 2012 these issues were completely off the agenda.

Another way of looking at this is as a complete failure of the political right to continue setting the agenda as they've successfully done for the previous thirty years. This is a notable departure from the era when the Republican party was strong and highly disciplined and on-message. They've become accustomed to winning and have grown lazy and dumb as the more thoughtful minds have gradually left the party.

Their past successes have led them up a political cul de sac where every candidate now has to sign up to a gauntlet of "litmus tests" dating from the Culture Wars of the 1980s and 90s. They have their hands tied and are forced to swear allegiance to the shibboleths of a narrower and narrower political base.

In this context and with the current economic climate, it is not hard to see why leftish social-democratic populism is doing well. Long may it continue.

John Quiggin on the lack of change in Canberra. Yes, they are still a pack of arseholes and despite it being five months since the coup, their policies are essentially unchanged from the Abbott era.

Abbott without the attitude
Nearly five months after Malcolm Turnbull became PM, it’s finally possible to get a clear view on the big question of what the change means. Has the shift from Tony Abbott has led to a real change in policy approach, centred on growth and innovation? Or is it merely cosmetic, amounting to the end of the tribalist rhetoric and gesture politics that eventually cost Abbott his job.

Based on recent developments, the case for “merely cosmetic” seems overwhelming. Turnbull’s rhetoric about innovation is starkly at odds with the reality of:

Abbott without the attitude
Nearly five months after Malcolm Turnbull became PM, it’s finally possible to get a clear view on the big question of what the change means. Has the shift from Tony Abbott has led to a real change in policy approach, centred on growth and innovation? Or is it merely cosmetic, amounting to the end of the tribalist rhetoric and gesture politics that eventually cost Abbott his job.

Based on recent developments, the case for “merely cosmetic” seems overwhelming. Turnbull’s rhetoric about innovation is starkly at odds with the reality of:

* massive job cuts in CSIRO, focused on climate change. The fact that the new entrepreneurial CEO is flogging the dead horse of coal to diesel adds insult to injury; and

* the $5 billion Northern Australia infrastructure fund, a boondoggle based on mid-20th century rhetoric about “unlocking the North”. It was pushed by Abbott as a sop to the Institute of Public Affairs, who underwent a sudden conversion to the cause of publicly subsidised dam projects a little while ago. The political imperative has gone but the money still flows, it seems.

The picture is just as bad on other issues. Turnbull is going ahead with the $160 millikon plebiscite on equal marriage, even though its leading backers, who only pushed it as a delaying tactic, have announced they won’t be bound by the result. Turnbull should have taken these statements as releasing him from any commitments to the anti-equality right, and allowed a free (in both senses of the word) vote in Parliament instead.

On climate change, the rhetoric in Paris sounded OK, but there has been no action to speak of. Turnbull hasn’t even committed to maintaining the Renewable Energy Target, let alone increasing it as he will need to do in the absence of an effective carbon price.

I imagine the appearance of improvement will last long enough to secure an election win for Turnbull. But, unless he starts delivering some change, the reality will become evident before long.___

Climate science to be gutted as CSIRO swings jobs axe

The lizard brain of Tony Abbott still rules this country. Conservatives hate science and conservative governments hate data. They want to run things along ideological lines and without incumbrances such as "reality" and "evidence".

The government is determined pursue its path of ignoring climate change and this will have ruinous consequences in the coming decades. They abolished the only price signal for carbon emissions and gave the greenlight to Carmichael mega coal mine, one of the most damaging fossil fuel projects on the planet. Now they are gutting the only institution in the country that can can measure and model the changes happening to our climate.

Trump’s campaign lacked the voter-targeting and turnout capabilities to translate a 7-point polling lead in Iowa into a win in Monday’s Iowa caucuses, and his disappointing second-place finishhinted at potential trouble for him in upcoming states that should otherwise be more favorable.

Cruz and Rubio’s campaigns ran circles around Trump’s bare-bones operation, which gambled that Trump’s star appeal could overpower modern organizing tactics, and relied instead on big rallies, an outlandish social media presence, a flashy endorsement from Sarah Palin and a late advertising blitz to try to get supporters to the polls.

As expected, when denialism fails and climate change become undeniable, the thieves and liars move on to the next phase of obstruction: adaptation. We can't have a carbon price so let's just see how we can make do with a dessicated and destroyed planet.

Our moronic Government are screwing around with the CSIRO again..
_
CSIRO chief executive Larry Marshall said the changes would see the organisation move away from measuring and monitoring climate change, to instead focus on how to adapt to it.

How to adapt to it?
How about putting some effort into looking how to wind back the clock a bit?
Climate change is a fact, no matter what these two arseholes in the photograph suggest, and not even attempting to do something about it is a waste.
But, then again, nothing surprises me about how this mob of rednecks run the place.

When people with vested interests disagree about politics in the real world, thousands of people end up dead. This isn't a facile comparison: here, the whole point of the constant earnest bleating about the first type of disagreement is to drown out any discussion of the second."___Bernie Bros and Hillary Goons battle it out on the internet and yet only the former get called out by the opionistas in the media. In my experience they tend to think it is their duty to counteract the "lies" told about their favourite establishment candidate. Some have suggested, in an attempt to shut down all discussion on the matter, that criticising Hillary's record is "doing the Republicans' bidding" and so on.

Of course any sensible assessment of the noise of political discussion is that it is made up of all personality types, some of whom are obnoxious and abusive but most of whom are merely exercising their democratic rights to discuss and support their preferred candidate. This phenomenon apparently makes many of the dummkopfs in the media uncomfortable.

Contact between Polynesians and South Americans in pre-Columbian times has been postulated before. An important traditional food crop in the Pacific is the sweet potato and this is thought to have entered the Polynesian diet in pre-Columbian times.

This genetic study appears to confirm that Polynesians reciprocated by introducing the coconut to South America. It also brings to light the entire global history of coconut domestication and trading.

The niu vai variety which comes from South East Asia really rocks.

Domestication of coconut took place twice.
DNA studies on coconut samples from around the world show two centres of domestication, one in South Asia (Kerala, Lakshadweep and Sri Lanka) and another in south east Asian islands. And current distribution of coconut tells the story of human migrations including a precolumbian migration of Austronasian people from southeast Asia to the west coast of South America.
