While reviewing some old raw files near the end of 2012, I went back to some Death Valley photographs made during the past few years. I came upon this photograph that I had more or less forgotten. I wonder if at the time I was distracted by other photographs that appealed to me more, or if I perhaps just wasn’t sure how to treat it at the time. Version 1.61 of +Replies and More is now in the Chrome webstore. It automatically expands long posts, and fixes a few small layout issues with the new Google+ design.

Replies and more adds "Reply" and "Reply to Author" links to posts, badges the Google+ icon with the notification count, lets you mute posts with the 'M' key, auto-expands posts and many more features. Install it here:

They are still crawling profiles but they are not crawling, indexing and ranking posts. This is something you may want to keep an eye one! I'm noticing some layout problems in the new Google+ layout on different pages:
Hit pagedown one or more times, and subsequently pageup.
=> the title bar is floating over the other page items, about 1 cm to low.
Anyone else?

Ring Road (Route 1)

This is a part of the Route 1 or also called Ring Road in Iceland. It is 1.339km long and connects the most popular parts of the country. Although it is the main road in Iceland it still has some parts with an unpaved gravel surface. In combination with blind curves, blind hills, one lane bridges and narrow passes it is an real adventure to drive this road through the gorgeous landscapes of Iceland.

The Kilauea Iki trail is one of my favorite trails on the entire Big Island. It starts in the rain forest. You go suddenly from the ancient forest to the newly created maw of the crater floor, where just a few plants cling to life. The contrast couldn’t be more dramatic.

The research team of Antti Oulasvirta at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics has created a new keyboard called KALQ that enables faster thumb-typing on touchscreen devices. They used computational optimization techniques in conjunction with a model of thumb movement to search among millions of potential layouts before identifying one that yields superior performance. A user study confirmed that, after a short amount of practice, users could type 34% faster than they could with a QWERTY layout.

I rarely shoot blue skies, but when presented with a scene like this, it's hard to resist. You gotta love a sunburst! Caused of course by the aperture blades when stopped down some. This was shot at f/11. Enterprise Island, Antarctica 2012.

Many of my mountain landscapes are captured using conventional composition rules, so mountain peaks in the background with other elements in the foreground and/or middle to lead the eye to the peaks and to complement them. I do like to challenge these rules though and love trying different approaches. One of the things I like to do for instance is to go up a mountain and shoot the surrounding mountains from there to get a different perspective.

Using a wide-angle lens up on a mountain is fun, however I prefer to use longer focal lengths to get closer and to create more “intimate” images. I usually point the lens downwards a bit, compose very tightly and avoid including too much sky. I love the perspective you get by shooting in this manner.
