I won't speculate on what goes on in a Papal Enclave, but it must be a tedious process. I sure hope they brought snacks to share.

Around the world, Rotarians help provide clean water as well as education and literacy opportunities. With one project, Rotarians from Turkey and Brazil helped to do both when they provided 2,500 students in Turkey with clean water facilities. This can be especially helpful for keeping girls in school longer.

Hello! I'll keep it brief.
I am currently a Lutheran minister who embraces the Theory of Evolution. I'm not supposed to, but I do. Believe it or not, I actually understand that 'theory' does not mean 'wild-ass guess'. I find evolution via natural selection to be an elegant explanation of the development of life. I also have a bachelors degree in electrical engineering, so I know a little bit about science (although I'll admit I'm not a very good scientist when it comes to practical application). Science and its ongoing discoveries (we have motorized probes on the surface of Mars, for pete's sake!) have beckoned me to re-examine the Scriptures I preach and teach with a sense that we have interpreted it all wrong, and that the message of the Bible is not what we thought it was. I don't blame the Bible for that. I blame theologians such as myself.... more »

"The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be, but we have done various things over intellectual history to slowly correct some of our misapprehensions."-- Douglas Adams

Ok, question for you science geeks: Shouldn't the meteor fragments that hit Russia have totally obliterated the place? In my way of thinking, if it was all from the same meteor, the collective energy from each fragment would've been catastrophic for the entire country and most of the Eastern Hemisphere, resulting in massive casualties. Or am I wrong?

Bracing myself for this stomach flu that's going around. It's ravaged it's way through my family, so I'm probably next. My anticipation of being elected Pope should get me through it.

My turn! Is it okay to ridicule religion?
I'm sure many of you have seen the YMCA Jesus picture. It was shown to me by a parishioner about a year ago.
I thought it was hilarious! My parishioner was appalled that these young men would make fun of Jesus that way. I explained to her that they were not making fun of Jesus, but were in fact making fun of US! I also reminded her that it's only a painting, a depiction, of Jesus and not Jesus himself.
When you are ridiculing religion you are in actuality ridiculing its adherents, and some of us need to have our shells broken open so that we don't forget to tend to the things of everyday life. Many of us religionists have a tendency to take our religion WAY too seriously. I try to teach people to approach their faith with light-heartedness and a sense of whimsy, and that faith is not a mental position to hold b... more »

I don't know if this is out of line or not, but I would like to propose a change to the current question that is being debated. The question of "Is It Okay To Ridicule Religion?" I propose be changed to "Should Religion Be Ridiculed?"
To wit, this is my reply to +Mark Bloom in his previous post that will serve well as my reasoning for my proposal:
_I like your distinction between "can" and "should". This dovetails directly into our current discussion about the "ok"ness of ridiculing religion, because if we "shouldn't" then it is not "ok", imo.
So, perhaps the question should be put as "Should religion be ridiculed?". I would propose that change._

Walking my talk by stating an opinion: Many Christians have a hard time accepting Evolution because, for the most part, it has not been presented in meaningful ways. Thoughts?

Saw Movie 43 today. Don't waste your time and money. And don't be taken in by the big names. Nothing is beneath them.

The angst of being confused about many things is hard to overcome. I suppose the best thing to do is write about it. Maybe later.

Question for former theists-- What would you say was the tipping point of your conversion (for lack of a better term) to atheism?

I'm here by invitation. My name is Doug, and I'm a Lutheran pastor. Not much of a "debater" because I have the uncanny ability to see where everyone is coming from. It's a blessing and a curse, really. It's difficult for me to dig my heels in the sand, but I do have the gift of being hospitable and kind. Thanks for having me!

By way of introduction-- I'm Doug, and I'm a Lutheran pastor. I joined this community because it showed up in my feed, but more importantly, I have high regard and respect for Atheists. I'm easy to get along with, I don't attack anyone, and I'm not a troll looking to take potshots at people. I also think a good Hitch-slapping now and then keeps it real.
Great to be here!
