As we get ready for the 93rd year of universal public education, here’s the question every parent and taxpayer needs to wrestle with: Are we going to applaud, push or even permit our schools (including most of the private ones) to continue the safe but ultimately doomed strategy of churning out predictable, testable and mediocre factory-workers?

"As Adam Smith pointed out, kindness works among friends and relatives, but for cooperation among strangers, human beings use a wholly different mechanism: a division of labor that encourages people to engage in mutual service. Plenty of other animals (from chimpanzees to ants) show cooperation within groups and proportionate antagonism between them, whereas none has exchange and specialization between strangers. History shows that it is trade that dissolves hostility between groups."

This is a three part interview with John Taylor Gatto on Gnostic Media. I really enjoyed the first two parts and as soon as I find some more time to listen I'll be downloading part 3.

Do you live in WA? This is my sister's new business venture and her first official publicity! It is going to be a wonderful place for adults and children. I helped her choose the name Time In Cafe because it really will be a place for time in with kids and adults alike.

At some time we're going to reach a breaking point, that is inevitable. My question is how it is possible, that the time has not yet come for so many Americans.

This is just unbelievably cool:
Just an ordinary day at Copenhagen Central Station. 2:32 PM.
Some guy sets up a snare drum and starts playing. Sounds like the ostinato rhythm from Ravel's Boléro. Oh wait, there is this other guy with a cello accompanying him playing the ostinato in pizzicato. A woman stops by. She takes her flute out of her case just in time to start the melody.
So far it looks just like an ordinary bunch of street musicians. However, by the time the clarinet and bassoons join you start to realize that something extraordinary is going on. More and more musicians stop by and unpack their instruments just in time to start playing! It's a full-fledged friggin symphony orchestra! In fact, it's the Copenhagen Philharmonic!
This is the best flashmob, ever!

Watch, if you can, then tell me if you can why I am the only person I know in real life who thinks it's so utterly *wrong* that we engage, and PAY FOR people to do this to one another? Oh, and by the way, don't think it just happens in foreign countries...you really don't need to look any farther for abuses than your own county jail, or even your kids' schoolyard.
Why do people NOT know this? If I had an owner's manual for being a human being, the knowledge of how people manipulate one another, and how to avoid it would be in there, and required. ARGH. How can you NOT care when you are a human being, too?
*soapbox mode off*

"I want to make it clear that I don't see homeschooling as some kind of answer to the badness of schools. I think that the home is the proper base for the exploration of the world which we call learning or education. Home would be the best base no matter how good the schools were." ~ John Holt

We found a baby bunny on the sidewalk. We got it to eat but we'll have to decide if we should keep caring for it or bring it to the wildlife rescue.

I think I'd rather be in all your circles than a one or two. If you have a common interest with me, I'd like to know more about your other interests as well. I thought the circles idea was cool but now I wonder how much it limits sharing of great ideas. I don't want to just share with the choir.

When they outlaw alcohol and tobacco, I'll believe the gov't cares about protecting our health. When they enact evidence-based medical practices, I'll believe the gov't cares about protecting our health. When they raid McDonald's with guns drawn, I'll believe the gov't cares about protecting our health. Until then, they can *#%$ off. For real.

My sister and her family have been visiting all week and I so wish we lived closer. Our quality of life for ourselves and our children would benefit in so many ways if we could be there for each other. We make such a great team and our kids our just adore each other.

I wish I had recorded my daughter's face when I told her we used to have toilets that only needed one flush and that such toilets are illegal. She didn't believe me until I found proof on the internet. I read her an article about people driving to Canada to buy old faithfuls.
