Mother cat adopted an orphan pig

Cases of friendships of animal species are interesting. An elephant can become friends with a sheep and later on a giraffe may join them. This video presents a Romania mother cat with its four kittens. The cat accepted an orphan pig as a new member of its family.

The text on the webpage are in Finnish because the video should be accessible worldwide. Some videos of the same topic on other sites and also on YouTube were not allowed in my country.

This a big news or should I say unbelievably huge news. A flying car that can is than you ever thought:
- no pilot's license needed
- economical and fast
- safe and good looking
In my understanding, a flying car is a compromise between a car and aircraft. Can it ever be as good as promised in this article?

How do you get lots of engagement on your public posts?

In other words, how do you get dozens of +1s, reshares and comments on things you share to your stream? You might think that it's a matter of getting more followers, but that doesn't work as well as one might think: getting twice as many followers doesn't result in getting twice as many +1s. You might also think that posting better material will result in more people reading your posts and engaging with them. That's probably true if you're posting to a Community, but it's less true if you're posting to your own stream. Maybe you're posting great material and your posts only get a couple of +1s, and yet other people are posting lower quality material and are getting dozens of +1s. They're managing to do that because they have better engagement than you. So how can you get good engagement?

Video SEO outside of YouTube may be a waste of time

Some interesting and challenging observations from video search expert +Greg Jarboe - snippet quoted below:
First, videos weren’t being found in Google Universal Search results as frequently at the end of 2012 as they were at the beginning of 2012. So, if you are counting on your videos – wherever they are hosted – to be found in Google search results, you’re sailing against the wind.

Second, 8 out of the 10 videos that are found in Google search results are hosted YouTube. Oh, and these YouTube videos rank about two positions higher than videos hosted on any other site.

Maybe it is wisest to use YouTube for your videos and show them off inside Google Plus! The video can point to your website (external links) and the post you make in Google Plus can point to your website. And your ability to master G+can make... more »

What is the area of the biggest sofa that can be moved around an L-shaped corner?

Suppose we have a corridor of width 1, with a right angled corner in it.  What is the area of the largest rigid shape that can be slid around the corner?  For example, it is possible to move a solid semicircle of radius 1 around the corner, and that has an area of π/2 (about 1.571). 

But we can do better!  The attached picture shows the Hammersley sofa moving around a corner.  Its area is π/2 + 2/π (approximately 2.207).  The Gerver sofa has a similar shape, but with rounded corners, and it has an even larger area of approximately 2.220.

It is not known what the largest possible area of such a sofa is, although it is known that the area cannot exceed the square root of 8 (about 2.828).

First ever website was text-only

WWW started without glimmering colours - 20 years ago in April 30 the first ever website was made public. Despite being 'public', naturally it didn't have much audience. It was the starting point and very primitive design in today's terms.

When look at the website, you may think that there's something technically wrong with it. No there isn't. Nevertheless I'm wondering why I somehow feel that it isn't a real website? The first ever car maybe had three wheels instead of today's four. You don't need to share my opinion but I think the wheels make a car looking a car and graphics make a website looking a website.

A red wood ant (Formica polyctena) battles a common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) - and wins!

When not defeating formidable enemies, the red wood ant also spends some free time working on earthquake prediction!  Quite an insect!

"The Oscars of the design world" showcase the most innovative designs from around the world. The prizes are shared by Design Museum London in the United Kingdom and given in several categories. In Digital, the winner is the website www.gov.uk, the place to find the United Kingdom government services and information. So, what do we think of the winner? 

The purpose of the website clearly is to share information. Thus its lack of graphics is understandable. I don't live in the UK, nor am I especially interesting in the site. What puzzles me around it the question, why this website earned its prize?

Phone still works after driven over by a Caterpillar

There are some things which you shouldn't try at home. Of course, this case is from an industrial depot but driving over your smartphone by heavy machinery and then burying it in dept of 50cm / 1.7ft is not recommended. Not although after all the punishment the owner still could use the phone almost normally.

Google search and the button for cached results

I just found the button for cached search results when using the Finnish Google at www.google.fi. It is the circled dark-grey arrow pointing downwards. Strangely it is only available when I'm not logged in to Google.

The screen capture is just an example. That more or less weird sentence says "translate this page".

Evernote rival by Google is called Keep

As much as Evernote has been praised, I haven't started using it. The idea is to save all the interesting pieces of data those you happen to find: texts, links, images and so on. Now Google has introduced Google Keep that is integrated with Google Drive. Sounds better than interesting.

Give it two examples, and Google's spreadsheet can make a list of almost anything. 

Create a new spreadsheet in Google Drive, type mazda in A1 and honda in A2 (the first column), highlight the two cells and then press Ctrl (or Option for Mac) while clicking and dragging the small blue box from the lower-right corner to select additional cells where to place the Google Sets results.

Solar panels - if you can't beat them, join them

Glass walls in big buildings is considered very modern. Without checking the facts, I believe architecturally they more eye-pleasing than functional. Replacing the glass surface with solar panels we could have a solution that loosely imitates dark-tinted glass. In this case the dark shade likely fits best although some other color alternatives have been talked about.

Tuulivoimaloiden käyttöikä - Tietoa etsiessäni tuulivoimaloiden käyttöiäksi on usein merkitty 20 vuotta. En takaa, että termi käyttöikä on oikea enkä varmuudella tiedä, mitä luvatulla 20 vuodella tarkoitetaan. Puretaanko laitos sen jälkeen vai peruskorjataanko se?

Oulun Vihreäsaaressa sijaitsevat Innopowerin yhden ja kolmen MW tuulivoimalat. Molemmat ovat ensimmäisiä yksilöitä mallisarjassaan ja toteutettu jossain määrin osana valmistajan tuotekehitystä. Nyt olla siinä tilanteessa, että pienempää voimalaa, Vihreäsaari I:tä, ei enää kannata korjata toimintakuntoon saattamiseksi. Laitos on rakennettu vuonna 2001.

Vuonna 2005 valmistunut Vihreäsaari II ei ole kärsinyt yhtä lukuisista vioista kuin pienempi laitos. Sekin on paraikaa pysähdyksissä tulipalosta aiheutuneiden vahinkojen vuoksi.
