One of the greatest things I've learned to do with babies and infants is to give them something to play with during the shoot, it never disappoints!

I borrowed the composition of this photo from +Scott Jarvie and added my own personal flair through my processing, what a great photographer and inspiration that guy is.

From a recent wedding a few weeks ago, capture just outside of their reception center. It can be really difficult to get the couple away from the party sometimes but it is definitely worth it.

Been a while since I've uploaded anything, I usually don't do silhouettes but the sun was so strong and the positioning was juuuust right. This was taken around the Oquirrh Mt. Lake in Utah.

I have posted this image before but am submitting to #transporttuesday and mentioning one of the curators +Gene Bowker . This was created in Provo Utah just at the railyard. It's a 3-exposure HDR and actually won me 3rd place in the county art show in the digital art category.

Thank goodness for flash on a cloudy day, this image would have been totally drab and boring without. My assitant (wife) was holding a softbox with a 580EXII at camera right and raised up a bit pointing down at the couple. I love the emotion in this shot and the black and white just makes it that much sweeter I think.

Taken during blue-hour, or about 30-40 minutes after the sun had set beyond the horizon, this is an HDR of about 7 exposures. This is the Mt. Timpanogos LDS Temple in American Fork Utah. Happy Easter everyone!

Looking to get some feedback on this one, the setup of the actual shot could have been better, I already know this, and yes it is easier to just have a set already made, but hey I like to play with photoshop. I normally don't post before and afters but wanted to on this one, what do you think? What would you have done differently? Also would you be interested in a simple tutorial on how this is easily achieved?

This is from a very recent shoot just last month where we decided to bring along the pup, the evening lights were beautiful and added a nice golden glow to the back, the park bench was heavily shaded and so to light the couple I used the Apollo Orb with a 580 EXII speedlight probably at near full power. +Neil van Niekerk does a great job explaining how simple using off-camera flash really is, just meter for the background and adjust your light source as needed.

Am I a hack? This is a question I heard Zack Arias mention in one of his videos and I think about it almost daily. I don't think that I am but I think everyone has those days where they feel like one. For example....I don't have a really nice dedicated studio area but try to make due with what I have...for example this was taken on in my kitchen on the table....but hey it works, what do you think? (yes I know the highlights are blown...it was on purpose.)

From a recent wedding, I had the couple stand on the floor while I headed up the stairs and shot down from the balcony, there is on off-camera 580 EX II lighting them from the left (obviously) which was triggered by a Cactus V4. This was taken in Ogden Utah at Ivy lane Reception Center.

This is one of my favorite photos. This is my newborn son, Gage, grasping onto my finger just days after he was born last July. The fact that this shot turned out so well is a bit of a miracle combined with careful planning. It was taken with the 105mm Kron/Lester A. Dine macro lens, I had set the focus and then moved the camera to get it to full sharpness with one hand. It was lit with a single strobe in a smaller cowboy studio softbox.

I'd like to say that the result is a bit of a miracle but in contrast to the miracle of my son's birth after years of trying and failed pregnancies, I feel it would be inappropriate to refer to it as such.

On Letting Your Sense Of Style Go Wild

I don't care how you decide to label it:

-random selections
-happy accidents
-divine inspiration
-precise vision

Whatever the label, I think that having fun with how you stylize your images is one of the best ways to develop your own taste, your own brand, and your own look. Iteration after iteration, as you try something and decide whether it works for you or not, you begin honing that special something that makes your shot yours.

Obviously, it all starts with taking a good and compelling photo. Don't walk down that path where you start relying on stylization as a crutch to salvage a shoddy image. Growth as a photographer is a lifelong commitment to take part of a delicate juggling act - learning your hardware, learning your software, learning how to saturate both with your imagination and your... more »

Just practicing my composite techniques. Luckily I have friends willing to pose for this kind of stuff.

If you've ever conceived of, read, or viewed anything related to the post-apocalypse I think there are at least two recurring themes: Cannibalism and dirty laundry. Seriously, almost nobody has clean wrappings and while I can't vouch for the reasons why people would resort to cannibalism; I think it's safe to say that it's because of jerks like this guy that there are no clean clothes... BZZZZZ ... I think his spin-cylce is finished.

Thanks to +Danielle Tunstall for not being afraid to create and showcase images that you enjoy and +Matt Kloskowski for your infinite knowledge on composites.

I made a little blog post on my site about this photo and some information on HDR, I included a photo of an over-baked poorly done shot to hopefully illustrate what not to do when creating HDR images. I'm by no means a professional blogger and am trying to be more diligent in updating more often. Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think!

This is probably some of my better work. Perhaps even better than the trainyard photo eh?+Colby Brown EH? Maybe not. Well anyway this is the LDS temple located in Draper Utah, I shot this on the day of a wedding that I was photographing and will be giving this as a print to the couple. It's a 3-bracketed HDR, first done in Photomatix and then processed in PS. I hope you enjoy it!

These portraits were taken with the final product in mind. I'd like to hope that we as photographers have a sense of humor. I find that sometimes I personally take myself way too seriously when I really shouldn't be. Anyway, I hope you can see the comedy in this; I have another floating space heads photo that I will be sharing on Monday, enjoy!

While at the beach waiting for a sunset, I noticed a gathering of birds down the beach. When I arrived where they were, I realized it was a huge flock of birds...larger than any I had seen before. I wanted to photograph them against the setting sun and ended up with long shadows as the sun got lower in the sky. They landed and took off many times as people walked by. #bestphotos2011

13 Year Old Boy Busted For Illegal Marker Possession
via: http://goo.gl/IaEuG

DECEMBER 22 -- A 13-year-old boy was arrested Friday for using a permanent marker while in class at his Oklahoma City middle school, a violation of an obscure city ordinance. According to an Oklahoma City Police Department report, the boy was spotted “in possession of a permanent marker” by Roosevelt Middle School teacher DeLynn Woodside. The marker ban--which apparently is aimed at curbing graffiti--stems from a city ordinance making it illegal to possess permanent marker on private property.

In line with +Levi Moore 's #topphotos2011, this was easily my best landscape image. Now, I don't normally shoot landscapes (more portraits) so this is something I was super proud of. Colby Brown, among many others, lent me his praises as it was originally submitted to his 'Behind the Lens Photo Critiquing Group', and really gave me the confidence I needed to submit this to the Utah County art show which came away with 3rd place in the 'Digital Art' category.

Here's to another great year in 2012!

My 4 year old bullie friend Koretauna, this was a Christmas gift for my girlfriend (now my wife). Her name is Koretauna (yes named after Cortana from Halo, she has a brother named Master Chief seen in the next image). She was just waking up from a nap on the couch and gave me her ornery look. Used on-camera bounce-flash. Photoshopped to make the eyes pop and fix the WB, probably also added a good amount of high pass sharpening and some other fixes.

His & Her Diary From the Same Day

Her Diary:
Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to
meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day
long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made
no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go
somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn't say much. I
asked him what was wrong; He said, 'Nothing.' I asked him if it was my fault
that he was upset. He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with
me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him.
He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behavior I don't know
why he didn't say, 'I love you, too.' When we got home, I felt as if I had... more »

The Cathedral of Palencia has a number of peculiarities. Among them being the longest in Spain, a Visigothic crypt possess, or have a double crossing. Its more than 130 feet in length making it one of the largest cathedrals in Spain and Europe, its apse close to 30 meters in height and width is 50 meters on the cruise, plus many of the cloister and chapter house, dimensions similar to those of the Cathedral of Chartres.(Wikipedia)
