"In 2005, author David Foster Wallace was asked to give the commencement address to the 2005 graduating class of Kenyon College. However, the resulting speech didn't become widely known until 3 years later, after his tragic death. It is, without a doubt, some of the best life advice we've ever come across, and perhaps the most simple and elegant explanation of the real value of education.
We made this video, built around an abridged version of the original audio recording, with the hopes that the core message of the speech could reach a wider audience who might not have otherwise been interested. However, we encourage everyone to seek out the full speech (because, in this case, the book is definitely better than the movie).

The Trans Pacific Partnership is one of the biggest multinational trade deals ever proposed, accounting for 40 per cent of the global economy.

Cathy Van Extel reports that secret negotiations resuming in Lima today could open the door for corporations to sue states—and it may all hinge on Australia's federal election.

Roadless Australia map
You may be surprised by this map.

'Generated by analysing the extensive database of roads in Google Maps, this proof-of-concept global map displays in a green- gradient all areas of land that are more than ten (10) kilometres from the nearest road, rail or navigable waterway. The gradient darkens with distance.'

Federal prosecutors secretly obtained telephone records from more than 20 lines belonging to the Associated Press and its journalists in an attempt to learn who leaked information on how the CIA thwarted an apparent terrorist plot hatched in Yemen.

The +The Associated Press on Monday called the action a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into news gathering.

Do you think it's ok for the government to monitor journalists without notice?

Quick knowledge

An Interesting History of 1752.
Here is an interesting historical fact. Just have a look at the calendar for the month of September 1752.
Go to Google type "September 1752 calendar" & see for yourself.
You will notice, 11 days are simply missing from the month.
Here's the explanation: This was the month during which England shifted from the Roman Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar.
A Julian year was 11 days longer than a Gregorian year. So, the King of England ordered 11 days to be wiped off the face of that particular month.
So, the workers worked for 11 days less that month, but got paid for the whole month. That's how the concept of "paid leave" was born. Hail the King!!!
In the Roman Julian Calendar, April used to be the first month of the year; but the Gregorian Calendar observed January... more »

Dr. Tad Tietze: “Therefore it cannot critically reflect on its own social nature, its own ideologies and practices that are inextricably bound up with wider social conflicts in their historical contexts.”

“A new paradigm that doesn’t simply repeat those flaws cannot be built from above, not by DSM committees nor NIMH directors. It can only be built through the struggles of patients and clinicians for a mental health system driven by quite different social priorities.”

Honorary Australian Citizenship to be awarded to the Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who saved tens of thousands of Jews from the Holocaust by issuing protective passports and providing shelter in diplomatic buildings.

This is the first time that Australia has bestowed such an honour and the award of honorary Australian citizenship is a symbolic recognition of Mr Wallenberg's tireless devotion to human life during the Holocaust.

The Governor-General, H E Ms Quentin Bryce, AC CVO, will host the presentation of a certificate of honorary Australian citizenship at Government House, Canberra, today, Monday 6 May 2013.

An endangered Hawksbill Turtle

The team have arrived in wonderful Aruba and will spend today unpacking gear and getting ready for our surveys of the area which will commence tomorrow. We all hope that these waters are as full of turtles as the sea-grass lined waters of Bonaire were. Pictured here is an endangered Hawksbill Turtle as captured by Barry Brown, a locally based underwater photographer. Turtles are protected in Bonaire which is why we could often see up to 20 of them on some dives.

#somethingtothinkabout
The New (Ab)Normal

Portion sizes have been growing. So have we. The average fast food meal today is more than four times larger than it was in the 50s. And adults are, on average, 26 pounds heavier. The culture of “supersized” meals has been growing slowly but surely re-educating us in the process of what a single meal portion actually is. Today, many of us have no clue.

Why did it happen in the first place? Essentially, it all comes down to the amount of money the manufacturer can make of a single purchase. It very soon became clear that selling more of the same with a slightly increased price but in a larger quantity could give a higher profit margin rather than the same item bought twice. Think about the production and delivery costs and the paper work it takes to service one single item in your menu. It costs less to sell you a biggerburge... more »
