We Are The Explorers UPDATE: funding at 50%!

As you might know, NASA cannot advertise itself. This is due to a federal restriction that the government places on itself as a whole. It can reach out publicly to explain what it does for the public, but the advertising landscape for a federal agency is complex. So, as a result NASA cannot advertise itself in a traditional, commercial sense. 

The AIA (Aerospace Industries Association) is so stoked about what NASA does, that they have decided to advertise on behalf of NASA. AND, they've decided to crowdsource this effort with Indiegogo.com. ANNNDDD they are planning on showing the ad with the new Star Trek Into Darkness movie that is coming out this year!

This comes at a crucial time when NASA's own public outreach is threatened due to the Sequestion fight in Washington DC.

A Kiva refers in Hopi to a circular structure built by Pueblo Indians for religious purposes. It is a “False Kiva” because excavation had shown that the structure was used for daily activities rather than rituals. Yet, the extraordinary setting inside an isolated alcove hidden in a cliff confers to the site a spiritual atmosphere. Comet Hale-Bopp, the Great Comet of 1997, became much brighter than any surrounding stars. It was seen even over bright city lights. Away from city lights, however, it put on quite a spectacular show. Here Comet Hale-Bopp was photographed above Val Parola Pass in the Dolomite mountains surrounding Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. Comet Hale-Bopp's blue ion tail, consisting of ions from the comet's nucleus, is pushed out by the solar wind. The white dust tail is composed of larger particles of dust from the nucleus driven by the pressure of sunlight, that orbit behind the comet. Night of Hurricane Sandy so many of us were concerned about the outcome. We were very fortunate here in Toronto to only get some rain 45klm winds. I managed to obtain a shot while the clouds were moving of the Hunters Full Moon with a Halo around it.

In The Land Of The Northern Lights

Ok folks, this is it. Here is my first video project.
It is a timelapse video of the Northern Lights. All sequences are shot in or close to Tromsø in Northern Norway.

I have spent over 6months collecting footage for this, I have shot approx 50.000 stills to choose from in making this video. A goal for me has been to try to preserve the real-time speed of the northern lights, or come as close as possible, and present it the way I experienced it, instead of the northern lights just flashing over the sky in the blink of an eye.

It may work on other time-lapse videos with fast moving clouds and sunsets etc, but with the northern lights in focus, it should be presented in it's true speed to reflect her beauty, imo. In the video I have put together a collection of slow moving auroras in the woods,... more »

This is great news! YAY for me! For Canadian Photographer's!  

Canadian photographers now own the copyright to their images even if they were commissioned photos. If you're going to share mine or someone's photo, please remember attribution at the very least. 

"Previously, photographers were not automatically the first owners of their photographs when shooting commissioned work, but instead it was the individuals or businesses that commissioned the images who owned the copyrights. Section 13(2) of the Canadian Copyright Act specifically singled out photography as being different than other creative works."

This was the closet time I got almost attacked while trailing. I did not see any Osprey's in this nest and was just going to walk on by. Then all of the sudden a very angry Osprey appeared right above my head. I took this snap hoping to obtain more of it's wing span, but then it swooped downwards towards me flying over just feet above my head... I thought I was going to be it's lunch! Yes I ducked!

Managed to capture a quick distance Pre-view snap of the 'Blue Moon' with a few stars in view before it went behind my trees. It will be completely Full August 2nd. The next  Full Moon will be at the end of Aug. We then will not have two Full Moon's until July 2015. Oddly though the Moon is Blue, although
 this is not the reason for it's name... interesting :)

I was hoping to obtain some nice close up shots of the Lilly flowers, but rain was fast approaching so we had to begin to move fast in the boat, but managed to obtain this shot of one as we past it.
