The service will be called Kindle Worlds, and here's how it works: Amazon has purchased the licensing rights to shows/books like Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and more. People can write their fan fiction based on these properties and make them available on Amazon legally (on Kindle, obviously) —but more importantly they can sell them. Proceeds will go to the rights-holders, and if the authors' works consists of over 10,000 words, the authors get the standard book royalty rate of 35% of total sales.

I made a blog about the new Star Trek movie, which turned into a few cultural observations and I wanted to share it:

You are officially mildly spoiled if you read below, NO COMPLAINTS!

Up front I will say I enjoyed this latest Star Trek movie a lot.  It was super noisy, but enjoyable, beautifully executed, and I particularly like some of the secondary characters, Spock was excellent, etc etc.  I just want to share an observation that stuck with me:

Where are the women?  The strong women?  The women we’d like to see in 200 years?  Where are they in this world?  They certainly aren’t around the roundtable when the Starfleet are learning about Khan (there might have been one in that scene, if so that extra was not cut to in any significant manner to be notable.)  In the scene where Kirk gets his ship back and the admiral is having a meeting with “important”people around ... more »

When I look at the different comments and posts on the latest publication about cold fusion or LENR, I realize that there is still a lot of work to do for people to get a critical mind on scientific results. 

I wonder if I should lose time debunking the results, the articles describing the results, the education system that make people blindly believe these articles.

Yes, it is a bit our responsibility, we researchers in fusion: we don't explain enough our work. I see more posts (and even good ones) from laymen than from paid scientists. 

We have opportunities to present how fusion works, every kind of fusion, from hot to cold, to explain flaws and advantages and we don't do it.

This is the result: superficial headlines.

After my initial test, I want to see how the other materials look. So I am printing the base of Version 3 in polished Aluminide, as well as the Inner planet ring in Frosted Detail. Then I'll choose which looks best, and print the remainder of the model in that medium. Yay!

As for Version 4, I've got the maths where I want them, so it's just a matter of building it out. I reinforced all the struts and made the orbit wires a little thicker (2.2mm), and I am going to make it so each layer can be displayed/purchased seperately

OK here is the first Shapeways test, from Version 1 of the #DwarfOrrery! Obviously it is WAY too flimsy! The text came out as little bumps too.

So I'm going to print a test of Version 3: this has more support struts, and the orbit rings are 2mm thick instead of 1.5, as well as a better and bigger font. I am already designing Version 4, which forgoes the text and has even thicker geometries, so it will be interesting to see if Version 3 is viable
