A G+ friend lost his dog today, unexpectedly, after a short, dramatic illness.  His dog was having seizures, one right after another, and his other dogs had seizures, as well, though not with the same severity.  He thought it might be the food, since nothing else has changed.  His dog died this afternoon at 3:30 p.m..
I started looking for information on the food - past recalls, etc.  There have been a few.  Then I found this, which is very recent.
He doesn't know for sure if the food is what killed his dog and sickened the other two, and I am not here to libel a dog food company, but to warn you dog owners.  Just in case.
Do you believe we have to actually google a dog food and check to make sure it's not poison before we give it to our dogs??  Neither do I.  But we do.

THIS is why you do not walk your dogs on asphalt or concrete in the summer. If you see someone walking their dogs on asphalt or concrete, PLEASE educate them and get the pet to cooler ground. HENDERSON, NV -- Two homes were forcibly commandeered by police because they wanted to surveil a domestic battery suspect that lived adjacent to the homes. After their plan was denied by a phone request, police plotted to show up at the homes and break in and arrest the innocent homeowners.

"Defendant Officer David Cawthorn outlined the defendants' plan in his official report: 'It was determined to move to 367 Evening Side and attempt to contact Mitchell. If Mitchell answered the door he would be asked to leave. If he refused to leave he would be arrested for Obstructing a Police Officer.

If Mitchell refused to answer the door, force entry would be made and Mitchell would be arrested.'"

Police proceeded with their plan, breaching Anthony Mitchell's front door with a battering ram. "The officers aimed their weapons at Anthony Mitchell and shouted obscenities at him and ordered him to lie down on the floor," the complaint stated.

"Although plaintiff Anthony Mitchell was lying motionless on the ground and posed no threat, officers, including Officer David Cawthorn, then fired multiple 'pepperball' rounds at plaintiff as he lay defenseless on the floor of his living room. Anthony Mitchell was struck at least three times by shots fired from close range, injuring him and causing him severe pain."

Officers then arrested him for obstructing a police officer, searched the house and moved furniture without his permission and set up a place in his home for a lookout, Mitchell says in the complaint.

He says they also hurt his pet dog for no reason whatsoever: "Plaintiff Anthony Mitchell's pet, a female dog named 'Sam,' was cowering in the corner when officers smashed through the front door. Although the terrified animal posed no threat to officers, they gratuitously shot it with one or more pepperball rounds. The panicked animal howled in fear and pain and fled from the residence. Sam was subsequently left trapped outside in a fenced alcove without access to water, food, or shelter from the sun for much of the day, while temperatures outside soared to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit."

Then the police turned their attention to the second innocent home, owned by Anthony Mitchell's parents on the same street. They lied and lured out Michael Mitchell, the father, requesting his help to negotiate the surrender of his neighbor. In actuality he was taken to a HPD command center and not permitted to leave. When he tried to walk off, he was arrested and charged with Obstructing a Police Officer.

Finally police commandeered the second home, still occupied by Linda Mitchell. When she told officers that they could not enter her home without a warrant, the officers detained her, dragging her off through the desert heat to a "command post", despite her frail condition and pleas to stop. Police then rummaged through her home, her belongings, her purse, even leaving the refrigerator ajar.

One hour to go, one last request! I didn't think I'd make it this far but 89 votes to go to make it to round 2. If I don't it was a valiant effort on the part of a pile of friends who shared my message forward. So either way, I'm pretty darn proud.

Vote if you haven't, share if you don't mind. Thank you in advance!

I watched the list of names grow.  You can watch the names as they're added, with nationality.  Surprisingly, there are far more signers from other countries than from the US.
Maybe Americans will sign when they get home from work.  Or maybe most are too afraid of getting on a different kind of list.

Our session began with images of her yoga experience, and then shifted to close images in my usual style. The background was the glorious sky and her hair blew wonderfully with the wind. She never did attempt to control her hair, but rather allowed it to dance with the environment. These are some of my most memorable images from the first visit to Los Angeles, and I look forward to printing this series in the next few weeks in the darkroom. Only then will I realize their incredible potential to move me once again.

Note: This series was made with a Hasselblad 555 ELD and the 120 mm lens, onto Fuji Neopan Acros 100 ASA film. The negatives were then scanned with an Epson V700 and adjusted regarding tones, sharpness. The only source of light is the glorious sun.

Please read this article.
Not only are the police 'forcibly relocating' the homeless, they are robbing them in the process by taking all their money they have on them, and then leaving them miles from Detroit, usually in the middle of the night...

That isn't a cop doing his job, that's a kidnapper/mugger isn't it?
Taking money from the homeless?!

From the Article:
"Sarah Mehta, ACLU of Michigan staff attorney, told Detroit's WWJ Newsradio 950 that the homeless were "being approached and harassed by police, not necessarily for anything they're doing, but just because of the way that they look. Often they're being dropped off late at night in neighborhoods that they don't know. We are NOT afraid.
We are a twisted labyrinth of roads nobody understands but the cabbies.
We are hot coffee and cold beer.
We are sultry summer evenings with the ballgame on every radio.
We are big ships in the harbor.
We are a giant Citco sign.
We are the Hancock Tower.
We are the Red Line and the Green Line.
We are cobblestones.
We are Nor'Easters and frost heaves.
We are wicked pissah.
We are baked beans and lobster.
We are Sweet Caroline.
We are the green monster.
We are traffic and aggressive drivers.
We are a blue cap with an embroidered red B.

Sean Collier, the MIT police officer that sacrificed his life for others this morning.

I know for the next few weeks, we're going to see nothing but the names of the people who planted the bombs all over the news.
Honestly, this man should get more coverage than them.
He died a hero. The others died as cowards.

It is time to remove Facebook from your Android device!

Facebook is currently in the process of asking you to install a new update. This update gives Facebook the ability to install future updates on your device without notifying you about the install.

This update gives Facebook the ability to bypass the Google Play store, and its app verification services, and update your device over wi-fi without telling you a thing.

Why this is horrible

First, it means that Facebook can continue to update your device, and add features or abilities (like tracking you) that you would otherwise know nothing about. Why this is horrible

First, it means that Facebook can continue to update your device, and add features or abilities (like tracking you) that you would otherwise know nothing about. My guess is this is the precursor for sending you advertisements on your phone from Facebook Exchange, which happens to leverage Facebook partners to track every single address you visit on the Internet. There is no practical way for you to opt out of this service, btw...

Second, it means that by staying off the Google Play store, you are not provided with an opportunity to read about any changes that Facebook is making to your application, its functions and abilities to do things with YOUR data.

Third, and the worst part about it, this update requires that you turn OFF your application-security protection from unknown sources (like all those Facebook Exchange partners), and also anyone else who might want to provide a fraudulent update, claiming to be Facebook.

Right Now go to your settings/security/device administration, and see if "Unknown Sources" is checked. If it is, uncheck it immediately, and uninstall Facebook. This is a MASSIVE malware vulnerability, one that is required by Facebook on your Android device.

What more information do you need about this organization? If Facebook is on your Android device, get rid of it without delay.

You are welcome. ___

The US House of Representatives passed the CISPA bill yesterday.

CISPA is the equivalent to Big Brother on the Internet.

It's far worse than SOPA or PIPA. This bill would allow the government to spy on your activities, legally, in perpituity. If they make a mistake, or confuse you with someone else, you can take no legal action to defend yourself. From the bill's text:

"Private information may be shared nonwithstanding any other provision of law."

Quote from ACLU: ""Cispa goes too far for little reason," said Michelle Richardson, ACLU legislative counsel. "Cybersecurity does not have to mean abdication of Americans' online privacy. As we've seen repeatedly, once the government gets expansive national security authorities, there's no going back. We encourage the Senate to let this horrible bill fade... more »

This graphic explains it much more clearly.

Obama has threatened to veto it, but this is no guarantee. He did the same thing with NDAA, eventually signing it into law. (That was the bill in which even American citizens can be legally imprisoned, held without trial, as long as the government likes.)

Call the White House, 202 456 1111 to express your feelings about the way #CISPA would take away your 4th Amendment rights to privacy. Tell them your vote depends on whether this bill is vetoed or not. Call your senators; CISPA must pass the Senate before Obama gets to decide whether to veto or not.

You can find your senators listed, with their phone numbers, here. Call today. This is urgent.

Man has 75% of Skull Replaced!

Now this is just cool and amazing.  3D printing was used to replace 75% of a man’s skull!!

3D Printing - The technique used here was similar to a tissue engineering article I recently posted about (https://plus.google.com/u/0/114146479114949843175/posts/RvjmfiwN2or).  The patient had their head scanned and then that data used to produce a CAD (computer aided design) file.  This file was imported into a 3D printer, which then produced an implant layer-by-layer with the correct topology to match the patient’s skull!  This patient specific technology can dramatically improve implant fit and outcome.

PEKK  -  The material used for the printing was a thermoplastic, polyetherketoneketone (PEKK).  Thermoplastics are polymers that soften above a certain temperature but harden once cooled again.  This property allowsthis materi... more »

PEKK  -  The material used for the printing was a thermoplastic, polyetherketoneketone (PEKK).  Thermoplastics are polymers that soften above a certain temperature but harden once cooled again.  This property allows this material to be 3D printed for this purpose.  Other extremely important properties of PEKK for this application are its biocompatibility and similar mechanical properties to bone.  Matching mechanical properties to bone is extremely important for implants interfacing with bone!  If too stiff, the patient will experience bone loss and eventual implant loosening and failure.  But if the implant is not stiff enough, the implant may fail to provide the protection and withstand the forces placed upon it.  Biomedical engineering is a tricky business!

Future - 3D printing and PEKK are sure to have huge impact on the biomedical world, especially orthopaedic applications.  It will be amazing to see where we go from here!

Valais Blacknose Sheep

Yes, they are real! This adorable breed of sheep originated in the Valais region of Switzerland. Oddly, both rams (males) and ewes (females) have horns. Their wool is considered too coarse for hand knitting, but can be used to make carpets or mattresses. Enjoy your dose of daily squee.

Autism Simulator Lets You Experience Sensory Overload

It won't ever completely put you in the shoes of someone with autism but even a tiny glimpse into that world might help more people understand why its so important to research it and empathize with those on the spectrum...

"Kay said the game was partly inspired by an excerpt from the documentary Inside Autism, which uses similar audio and video filters to convey the overwhelming experience of sensory overload. As the video's creator put it, "my brain loses its capability for cognition. It crashes like a computer." Kay said he "thought that it would be such a powerful experience from a first-person perspective and a good project to take on for a weekend.""
