Is the JSON-LD revolution complete?

+Jarno van Driel pinged me a moment ago to note that in the "Enable Rich Snippets" specifications for structured data on the Google Developers site, JSON-LD is now the first-listed example for products (schema.org/Product).

Coming as this did on the heels of my discovery that JSON-LD was supported for schema.org/Organization outside of corporate contacts (http://bit.ly/WOp7rN), I thought I'd check out other classes for which microdata or schema.org was previously required to produce rich snippets.

Resistance is futile:  they, too, have been assimilated.  Every single type in the rich snippets has a JSON-LD example, and displays it first.  In fact, there's now a JSON-LD every example for every type on the structured data Developer pages, and where there's more than one syntax displayed, the JSON-LD example is always first.

I'm hoping that the following paragraph on the schema.org page (http://bit.ly/1Cvz9RM) is a legacy piece that now simply needs to be updated (and so an FYI ping to +Gary Illyes / +Dan Brickley):

Google is in the process of adding JSON-LD support to more markup-powered features. So far, JSON-LD is supported for all Knowledge Graph features, sitelink search boxes, and Event Rich Snippets; Google recommends the use of JSON-LD for those features. For the remaining Rich Snippets types and breadcrumbs, Google recommends the use of microdata or RDFa.

Obviously there's now a disconnect between the types in that list for which Google recommends microdata or RDFa - products, recipes, reviews, videos, articles and breadcrumbs - and the dedicated listing for that type with its JSON-LD example.  If, say, schema.org/Google really continues to want microdata or RDFa for recipe rich snippet generation, then a JSON-LD example shouldn't take pride of place (or be there at all) on the page titled Enabling Rich Snippets for Recipes in the Enable Rich Snippets section of the site. :)  I feel pretty confident it's now the introduction that's the outlier - let's hope.

With that the race is on, kids.  Rich snippets in the wild generated only on the basis of JSON-LD?  *GO!*

Twitter is on its way to become an e-commerce marketplace

Today, Twitter has begun testing two ways to make it easier for you to discover content about products and places on Twitter.

1. Dedicated product and place pages

These pages will feature images and video about the product alongside information such as a description, price, and an option to buy, book, or visit the website for more information.

Twitter is starting off with a small number of products and places.

As a result, within your timeline you may see pages and collections of pages that are shared by select influencers and brands.

Image below is an example Tweet and expanded product page about “The Martian” by @andyweirauthor.

2. Product and place collections

This is the way for people and brands to create and share Twitter Pinterest-like collections of products and places.

On Twitter for iOS and Android and on twitter.com, you can visit the profiles of curators to view their collections.

On iOS, you can also find these collections by tapping the search bar, and then tapping the category-based menu beneath it.

Google responds: Why are some Google manual penalties removed much faster than others?

Google's +John Mueller was asked why some sites seem to get back into Google’s search index faster than other sites, in light of Thumbtack’s link penalty (http://tgcafe.it/1Guw6ZH) and subsequent removal of the penalty a week later.

The question specifically was:

Does Google take in consideration the size of a company/site when processing responses for Manual Actions? Both RapGenius and Thumbtack penalties were processed/recovered very fast (with days not weeks). However, smaller sites sit for weeks/months.

John's response was the most detailed Google has been about reconsideration requests.

Bottom line:

♨ Google doesn't care what kind of site they are looking at.

♨ A lot seems to come down with how detailed you are in your reconsideration request.

♨  If you don’t include much information about what you cleaned up or how, it can take much longer to process your reconsideration request.

♨ If things are taking longer than expected, such as more than a week or two, then he suggests reaching out to see if there is another issue.

Twitter will start serving autoplay video to its users

The move comes as no surprise. Just catching up with the Jones (Facebook and YouTube).

♨ Videos will be displayed larger within people’s timelines.

♨ Twitter autoplay will also work with Vines and continue working with animated GIFs.

♨ Twitter’s autoplay will be activated without audio when a video comes into view on the screen.

♨ If a user turns his or her device to a horizontal orientation, the audio will switch on and the video will expand to the full screen.

♨ Users will have the option to revert to click-to-play video or have autoplay only active when connected to wifi.

♨ Twitter will continue the click-to-play system for users with low bandwidth devices or in locations high data rates.

♨ Twitter’s standard for viewability: 3 seconds, just like Facebook.

In testing, Twitter said, autoplay video was more engaging for users and more effective for brands.

Among the Twitter-provided results:

♨ People were 2.5X more likely to prefer autoplay videos over other viewing methods (including click-to-play and video preview thumbnails).
♨ They have better video recall with autoplay. In fact, we saw a significant 14% lift in video recall over other video formats.
♨ For brands, during our autoplay tests we saw a 7x increase in completions of Promoted Videos.

This change has rolled out to everyone on Twitter for iOS and twitter.com; the Android version is coming soon.

From the Ground Up

It was Alaskan senator Ted Stevens who famously said "the internet is a series of tubes" (https://goo.gl/5SBfqH) and from a certain context this is about as true as it can be. The internet is made up of a series of networked hierarchies that power many of its cloud services (including G+) and the structure of which is critical in delivering quality factors such as stability, speed and an always-on connection. 

Google has been a long-time innovator in this area. The company's data center architecture is not only mission-critical to its success in search but it also plays a pivotal role in a host of secondary but equally importance aspects such as heat management, power consumption and even the speed at which distributed computing actually happens. 

+Zeke Cao used to roam the corridors of these keeping the connections humming just right (obviously not all on his own ;) ) Google has now publicly shared some of the workings. 

What is key here to remember is that Google's network architecture mirrors the topology of semantic networks where relevance (and importance) in particular switches is conferred through their connection to a network of smaller ones. The approach is incredibly robust and makes it hard for the system to experience catastrophic failure (a little like the brain's response to a stroke where neural pathways re-route the messages).
