The 'Search' For Authority: Google Posts, Google Authorship, and the Semantic Web
 
Google Posts (a.k.a. 'Posts with Google') is a new way for authoritative Verified Google users to Post content directly and instantly to Google Search Results.  Currently being tested with candidates for the U.S. Presidential Election and some public and organizations, it functions similarly to a 'Social Search' feature (not unlike, in fact, their Search deal with Twitter), but with only the Posts themselves and no real social network attached to them (though they can be shared to social networks and as a link).
 
It also has something very fundamental in common with the now defunct Google Authorship program: a way of connecting web content (in this case a very specific type of web content, i.e. the Posts themselves) with the Identity with its Author.  This is critical to the evolution of Semantic Search, Google's quest to understand the Objects and Entities being Searched for and their associated facts and data (i.e. knowing that someone Searching for news about the death of Prince actually wants to know about the musical talent known as Prince and not just any random dead Prince, and at the same time knowing that Prince was a person with a particular gender, age, height, hometown, birthplace, etc...).
 
While Google knows a great deal about Entities, especially the authoritative Entities we call Politicians, Movie and TV Stars, Professional Athletes, etc...  where they've lagged has been in their ability to connect these Semantic Entities with their Online and Offline Identities, an area where they've been slow to answer effectively to the challenge of social media (where Facebook is behind Google in its knowledge of Semantic Entities, it easily laps them as a platform for following the Online Identities of these individuals, and of verifying that their Online Identity is connected with their Offline Identity as well, i.e. 'Verifying' these authoritative user accounts so other users of the network know that they're legit).
 
In the following article, I explain what Google Posts share in common with Google Authorship (and where they vary), and how they fit (or may fit in the future) into their goal of bringing Identity into their corner of the Semantic Web alongside the associated Entities and data in their Semantic Knowledge Base.

The Coming Chat Bot Revolution A pretty good overview of what's happening with the coming chat bot revolution.  It breaks my heart that the promise of chat bot technology is getting locked up in proprietary messaging services like Facebook's Messenger, Slack, etc. I'm hoping that a big player like Google will disrupt this by targeting chat bot technology at plain old SMS. 

Yeah, yeah, I know it'll be missing all the bells and whistles of the kinds of forms and interactivity of what Facebook will be able to do - initially at least. But dammit, we should be trying to keep this next wave of innovation as open as possible so that multiple AI solutions can target the same SMS client.

The TL;DR version of this article is that the first peak, during the early adoption phase, is when you are more likely to experience organic growth in terms of followers, reach, etc. As the network reaches mainstream, the competition for eyeballs becomes much harder and paid ads is the way to go.

+Larry Kim has penned an epic post for +Moz that addresses what we know about Google's  #RankBrain  and whether it's smart enough to include  #CTR  as a factor for organic search engine rankings. He did research to find out, and here was his premise:

If a page is ranking in position 3, but gets a higher than expected CTR, Google may decide to rank that page higher because tons of people are obviously interested in that result.
Seems kind of obvious, right?

Google penalizes sites for unnatural outbound linking

Over the weekend, Google has issued a large number of "Unnatural outbound links from domainname violate Google Webmaster Guidelines" penalties.

Wondering if yours was one of those sites?

Log into your Google Search Console (http://tgcafe.it/1Vm9pk9) and check your messages to see if you have this notification.

Google's +John Mueller responded to several Google Webmaster Help forum threads saying this specific penalty is related to the warning over free product reviews that are not nofollowed.

Whenever you get a free product to review, make sure that you nofollow any links back to the person/company who sent you that product.

Specifically, Google wants you to (a) nofollow links, (b) disclose the relationship between you and the product maker and (c) write original, unique, and useful content on the product - http://tgcafe.it/1RV7AGt.

How to improve your Local Ranking on Google

Google My Business has updated their “Improve Your Local Ranking on Google” page for local businesses.

According to the page (http://tgcafe.it/1RWhWUL), local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence.

Relevance
Relevance refers to how well a local listing matches what someone is searching for. Adding complete and detailed business information can help Google better understand your business and match your listing to relevant searches.

Distance
Just like it sounds–how far is each potential search result from the location term used in a search? If a user doesn't specify a location in their search, Google will calculate distance based on what’s known about their location.

Prominence
Prominence refers to how well-known a business is. Some places are more prominent in the offline world, and search results try to reflect this in local ranking. For example, famous museums, landmark hotels, or well-known store brands that are familiar to many people are also likely to be prominent in local search results.

Prominence is also based on information that Google has about a business from across the web (like links, articles, and directories). Google review count and score are factored into local search ranking: more reviews and positive ratings will probably improve a business's local ranking. Your position in web results is also a factor, so SEO best practices also apply to local search optimization.

It's taken a massively organized human effort (https://goo.gl/bONcMA) to bring the Panama Papers to light. But what if we could take this relatively structured data and process it using an AI?

This is not as far-fetched as you might think. Already AP is using an AI for its business reports that are drawn directly from data sheets and corporate information published in a structured data format.

Data shows that 93 percent of all Facebook interactions are still likes

Social analytics provider Unmetric ran a little experiment to determine how Facebook reactions are used by FB users (reported by Adweek's SocialTimes http://tgcafe.it/1M3EENI.)

Since Facebook’s API hasn’t made the Reactions numbers publicly accessible yet, Unmetric team manually went through each post to get the numbers.

One interesting factor discovered was the fact that Facebook only records 12,000 of the interactions. This happens for all posts that have over 10,000 interactions.

The data shows that 93% of all interactions are still likes.

Love is used 4.6%.

Wow is used more frequently than Haha, even though Haha comes before Wow in the order that Reactions are displayed.

Of course, just because other reactions aren't used nearly as much as Facebook's traditional Like, doesn't mean it'll remain this way.

Users may take their time to completely embrace the Reactions, but one thing is for sure, they’re here to stay.

Use reactions to get a better idea of how people interact with your posts and tweak your brand content strategy accordingly.

A Few Good Thoughts on Machine Learning in Business

On application of machine learning:
At a high level there are common kinds of tasks frequently seen in ML (machine learning): classification, regression and ranking. For instance, image recognition, such as in ImageNet, is a classification task where we have an input image and want to predict the primary subject matter of the image (a photo of a dog, car, etc.).

Regression is about predicting a real numerical value or values from an input, such as predicting the future value of a home or a stock portfolio. Ranking is about predicting an ordering of items which is “best” in a given setting; for instance, in search ranking, we want to order results that are most relevant for a given query and user profile and history.

On understanding metrics and their impact on business:
Unsurprisingly, this might be part of why Google invests so heavily in ML, because improvements are strongly correlated with key business and financial metrics.
