Max Huijgen28,020My #bottom99  circle on relevancy: what made me circle you and why do you score this low on relevancypart of the ongoing research into the relevancy algorithm Google usesI hope to see some interactions from this group to see if Google is right that although I circled you, the interests are not mutual and we don´t encounter each other sufficiently to merit circling. However maybe you all turn out to be highly relevant to me: it´s just the counter movement to the #top99 shares which tended to make the rich richer. My version was *A mystery shrouded in an enigma: My Top 99 circle* https://plus.google.com/u/0/112352920206354603958/posts/WUYsAPtwCDc which triggered a good discussion.I will put this group in a daily reading circle for some time and see what happens. Maybe I had a very good reason to circle you and it´s just a matter of mutual rediscovery. Let´t see what happens. How to do this:Sorted ´in my circles´ on relevancy and selected people from the bottom up until I figured I had about 100.  Put them into a circle of their own and shared it. Be aware that if you do so they immediately rank higher on relevancy as you shared them and mentioned them. So its hard to adjust precisely hence my 94 instead of 100. If you got a notification you were one of the 94 (as I couldn´t get exactly 100) and feel free to leave me a comment. I would love to hear from you. #bottom99   #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles +Shared Circles on G+   +Nothing but Circles  +Public Circles   +Full Circle +CircleCount 2012-07-27 07:26:399559319CC G+

Craig Froehle4,629467 Plussers Well Worth FollowingSome curated recommendations to make your Tuesday a bit more interesting. I kept this circle largely free of celebrities, pages, and organizations, so these should (nearly) all be actual people. Enjoy!By the way, topic-wise, it's a bit of a potpourri, but with emphasis on technology, science, progressive politics, skepticism, and other fascinating things.Note that I don't always agree with everyone in this circle, so don't take this as an endorsement of their ideas...merely that they tend to be thoughtful when presenting them.2012-07-03 14:29:094671718CC G+
Meilani MacDonald2,935Small Business circle 1 of 2Hello small business peeps! I'm a small biz person and naturally I want to connect with other small biz owners. I really feel we all have so much to share with each other and to learn from one another as we navigate this world called Google+ that provides us with so many great tools and resources to support our small biz efforts. I also think it's a good thing to support each other, and lift each other up as we work towards our goals. So I've been collecting small biz people and shared small biz & entrepreneurs circles, because those are the people I most want in my own circles, to follow, to connect with, and to support. I have 700+ small bizzes in my circle, so I've split it into two circles to share with you. This is #1 of the 2, and #2 is next. Let's hear it for small business!Btw, speaking of supporting small bizzes, I host a TGIF Biz Networking Hangout every Friday at 4pm pst, now a Hangout on Air. It is a chance to give yourself and your biz a little promo, and I feature special guests who are small biz owners and who have all kinds of good advice and info to share with other small biz owners. Please check my profile for more info or to watch last Friday's episode, where we talked about QR codes and great ideas for how to use them, and also talked about the value of keeping content fresh on your blogs and web sites, and when and why to blog, or not to blog. #smallbusiness #sharedcircles #entrepreneur +CircleCount +Shared Circles Shared a Circle with You +Shared a Circle with you2012-05-28 18:22:494491159CC G+

Meilani MacDonald1,201If the Circle Fits, Share It! - Entrepreneurs, Freelancers and Small BusinessWow, where to begin? This is exactly the circle I was looking for: entrepreneurs, freelancers and small business. I'll begin with a thanks to +Rahul Roy, whose always helpful posts of resources for new and wanting to be more active plussers pointed the way to www.CircleCount.com. That site turned out to be a great resource for finding shared circles defined by interest. There, I found +Rob Gordon's awesome entrepreneurs, freelancers and small business circle. I know it's a quality circle, as I noticed many of the folks in it are already in my circles, and I generally circle people who make posts I find to be useful, educational and enlightening. I hope you will find them as useful and enlightening as I have! #smallbusiness #freelance #professional #entrepreneur2012-03-24 00:26:5250111715CC G+
Rob Gordon18,830Entrepreneurs, Self Employed & Small Business. This is the latest update to my shared circle for "entrepreneurs" which includes the self employed, small business owners, independent contractors, small startup companies and pretty much anyone trying to make it outside of the traditional economy. This is different from the other business circles of this type in that it doesn't include too many of the "celebrity entrepreneurs" and instead has mostly people with their own small business or venture. Lots of time has been spent organizing this since it was first published - many new people have been added, and some have been dropped - mostly because they don't interact much. The end result is a circle of interesting business people who actively interact with others here and have a small business or entreprenueral mindset. I do want to add the disclamer that this is in no way "definitive" - there are millions of entrepreneurs on Google+ and these are just the ones I have curated. This still probably doesn't even include everyone in my own circles who are entrepreneurs or self employed so let me know if you want to be included. I republish this about once per month. This is a really diverse group of people that includes entrepreneurs of all stripes - some have well established ventures, some have startups that are just getting going and some are wildly successful. There are even a handful of people here who have traditional jobs, but seem to have an interest in entrepreneurial and small business issues. The professionals in this circle post all manner of things - not just business, but all are smart and interesting people so I recommend that you at least take a look. As with any circle of this size I would use some discretion in adding this - either pick and choose the ones you like or use it as a trial circle - whatever method works for you. I also recently learned that you can save circles to your Google contacts so you can save this information there even if you don't want to use this toward your 5000 limit. I hope you find the people in this circle interesting. I certainly do. RobReshares welcome and appreciated#sharedcircles#smallbusiness #entrepreneurs #startup2012-03-13 20:32:12500663852CC G+
Sir John Hardy17,427There have been a few circles shared about lately. None, however, is as good as this one. Each person in this circle has been crash tested in a laboratory, simmered in a social incubator and boiled in the crucible of interaction. Todd Vierling1,010The Lesser Celebrities of Google+My first broad-based shared circle. These people aren't super-prolific posters with thousands of commenters like Scoble or +Mike Elgan (there's nothing wrong with that; his content is nifty, but I simply can't keep up). These folks may not have follower counts in the hundreds of thousands, but they regularly post things that are interesting, geeky, funny, thought-provoking, and generally worth the read. A good addition to anybody's stream.First point, this circle seriously needs more women, and I plan to reduce the gender divide (and increase the diversity in general) before re-sharing this circle. And secondly, after cobbling this list, I'm sure that I left out a dozen or more folks whom I intended to add here. So this circle will probably be a tad bit larger the next time I share it.2012-03-02 19:19:1026102CC G+

Mozilla Executive Chairwoman Mitchell Baker said that Eich’s ability to lead the company that makes the Firefox Web browser had been badly damaged by the continued scrutiny over the hot-button issue, which had actually been known since 2012 inside the Mozilla community.

“It’s clear that Brendan cannot lead Mozilla in this setting,” said Baker, who added that she would not and could not speak for Eich. “The ability to lead — particularly for the CEO — is fundamental to the role and that is not possible here.”

HOW TO STOP SHARING EVERYTHING YOU PLUS ON G+

The acknowledgment "+1" has always helped boost post visibility within Google+ -- it's one of the many parts of the equation that make posts hit the What's Hot section, for instance. But What's Hot can be removed from a user's individual stream. This isn't immediately obvious for a new feature Google+ introduced yesterday (https://plus.google.com/+shimritby/posts/9no4w8LwDyn), which amplifies any posts people are "plussing" by sharing them into your stream, whether you follow the people who originally posted them or not.

This feature is great if you mostly follow a homogeneous group of people -- these people are in your industry and they generally have the same values, so you're going to see a lot of the sort of thing you would like. The problem is that we don't really live in a world... more »

Even though today’s rallies are just a first step, their success a huge shot in the arm for civil liberties. The network of informed and connected people that came together to make today happen can be the basis for pressuring Washington as legislation moves forward in Congress and the calls for a investigating committee pick up momentum, and we start to head into the 2014 primary season. And as BORDC executive director Shahid Buttar discusses in Restoring the Fourth Amendment, local organizing offers opportunities to win back right on a city-by-city basis (as we did with Save the Rave!) while reinforcing national the movement. BORDC and allies have had several big wins already this year, and with drones, fusion centers, and the national ID card hidden in the immigration bill, there will be plenty of opportunities for more …

Happy Birthday Google+

Two years ago I sat at my computer and received an invite into the not-live-yet Google+ platform from a friend that works over at the "Big G". Now today, I'm getting ready to speak at my nearly 100th talk about Google+ in the past two years (I have two talks this weekend alone).

Over the past two years I have had people - and clients - brush off the platform and my decades of highly relevant expertise and say they were perfectly happy staying 'same old same old'.... until the world evolved around them and left them in the dust. Two years later I have a nicely filled (client) dance card and even more agencies I work with to train and teach them how to better service their own clients in the new-new-new digital age. Even better, I've worked with a class of online citizen called 'influencer' to help them use the new digital... more »

Are you part of the generation the Obama betrayed?

A lot of people seem surprised that I don't like the broad reach of NSA given my stance on the benefits of sharing information online. Here's the deal though: my philosophy that the world is a better place the more we share with each other is just that - a philosophy, not a mandate. I think people should have the choice to be as private or public as they want to be and hopefully I can convince them of the benefits of sharing. There's a major difference between believing in something and forcing people to practice what you believe.

Some of you may be surprised to see me criticizing Obama as you likely know that I'm a huge supporter of him and liberal politics in general. That remains true. However, I do feel burned by the president and find myself respecting the people who are working to make the world a more... more »

With the recent disclosures about NSA surveillance, the issues we talked about during Get FISA Right’s birth in 2008 are back in the spotlight.   There are some big differences, though.  The FISA Amendment Act passed.  We now know a lot more about what the NSA has actually been doing, enough to see that the concerns we voiced about the lack of meaningful oversight and the potential for very broad orders allowing bulk collection of huge amounts of data were on target.   The political situation has changed, so civil liberties are a much more bipartisan issue in Congress.   The successful battle against SOPA and CISPA show the potential for online civil liberties activism.  The list goes on …

So as part of the revived discussions of FISA, the Patriot Act, and government surveillance, Get FISA Right would like to invite our members from 2008 to share their thoughts today. For example:

A high-profile group of technologists and privacy advocates is attempting to halt domestic surveillance of Americans through a clever twist: using federal bureaucratic rules against federal bureaucrats.

In a request today to National Security Agency director Keith Alexander and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, the group argues that the NSA's recently revealed domestic surveillance program is "unlawful" because the agency neglected to request public comments first. A federal appeals court previously ruled that was necessary in a lawsuit involving airport body scanners.

Thousands of technology, finance and manufacturing companies are working closely with U.S. national security agencies, providing sensitive information and in return receiving benefits that include access to classified intelligence, four people familiar with the process said.

If necessary, a company executive, known as a “committing officer,” is given documents that guarantee immunity from civil actions resulting from the transfer of data. The companies are provided with regular updates, which may include the broad parameters of how that information is used.

Senator Obama's 2008 response to us.

I learned long ago, when working as an organizer on the South Side of Chicago, that when citizens join their voices together, they can hold their leaders accountable. I'm not exempt from that. I'm certainly not perfect, and expect to be held accountable too. I cannot promise to agree with you on every issue. But I do promise to listen to your concerns, take them seriously, and seek to earn your ongoing support to change the country....

I look forward to continuing the conversation in the months and years to come. Together, we have a lot of work to do.

When Yahoo tried to challenge a FISA court order as overbroad, they lost.

the decision has had lasting repercussions for the dozens of companies that store troves of their users’ personal information and receive these national security requests — it puts them on notice that they need not even try to test their legality. And despite the murky details, the case offers a glimpse of the push and pull among tech companies and the intelligence and law enforcement agencies that try to tap into the reams of personal data stored on their servers.

Also covers challenges by Google, Twitter, and Calyx.

Our chief legal officer, +David Drummond, sent a letter to the Attorney General and the Director of the FBI today, asking the government to lift its restrictions on what we can say. As he says, we have nothing to hide -- and I personally welcome as much openness as possible.

Simultaneously, a bipartisan group of eight senators has proposed a bill to declassify FISA court rulings: http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/11/4419006/senate-bill-would-declassify-fisc-orders-for-nsa-surveillance .

I'm entirely in favor of all of this. The scandal in this case is not that the NSA may have broken the law -- it's that they very likely did not. It's that the law of the land has gradually mutated into something that allows us to be watched 24/7, at the whims of people unknown, subject to safeguards unknown, for reasons unknown -- but keeping a log, so that if anyone ever becomes suspiciouso... more »

+Marc Ambinder , the author, is known for having good sources in the security and defense communities. Government officials often work with him to communicate their perspectives anonymously. His article on "NSA sucks in data from 50 companies" [1] is worth reading as well.

At a first reading, this seems consistent with what's been reported, the carefully-worded denials from tech companies, and
+Yonatan Zunger's discussion [2]. A few thoughts:

Under the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, the NSA and the attorney general apply for an order allowing them to access a slice of the stuff that a company like Facebook keeps on its servers. Maybe this order is for all Facebook accounts opened up in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Maybe there are 50 of them.

As we saw with the Verizon case, the FISA court is willing to approve very broad collection. Could an order extendas f... more »

I have a tremendous number of thoughts about the various revelations about the NSA's domestic espionage programs revealed this week. But first and foremost, I wanted to share this message from +Larry Page and our Chief Legal Officer +David Drummond. Google had no involvement in the PRISM program and the first we heard of it was when Greenwald's article hit the press.

I'm not sure what the details of this PRISM program are, but I can tell you that the only way in which Google reveals information about users are when we receive lawful, specific orders about individuals -- things like search warrants. And we continue to stand firm against any attempts to do so broadly or without genuine, individualized suspicion, and publicize the results as much as possible in our Transparency Report. Having seen much of the internals of how we do this, I can tell you that it is a point of pride, both... more »
