By moving beyond gaming, MS thinks they can sell "upwards of a billion" Xbox One consoles. (They sold about 300 million Xbox 360s.)

I'm willing to bet this is an accurate leak. In fact I (and many others) have speculated that this will be how things work. There pretty much had to be some kind of buy-in from retailers or else there'd be no way to know that the customer had 'de-associated' his game with his Xbox Live account. Once you have that much of a system in place, taking a cut becomes almost mandatory (since supporting that system will have costs for MS).

Biggest surprise to me, and it's a nice one, is that publishers will get a cut, too.

Polygon rolled out a new article page design and they'd done some interesting things. Most important is that it's a lot faster than it used to be. Nice job!

So one factoid from the Xbox One reveal that I thought would get a lot more attention is this "offloading computing tasks to the cloud" feature. Y'know, like the new SimCity does (?).

I thought for sure we'd have a field day with that one but so far no one seems to have poked at it much. Or if they have, I've missed it.

Google's new 'semantic' voice search is live on Chrome 27 and it's CRAZY! So I say "Who is the president of the United States" and I get search results for Obama plus a voice telling me, Siri-like, "The president of the United States is Barak Obama." and then I saw "When is his birthday?" and the voice tells me Obama's birthday.

The only downside is I still have to click the microphone icon. When they first demoed it, you could just say "Google" or something to 'get it's attention.'

I don't often agree with what Leigh Alexander has to say, but rarely have I felt she was so far off the farm as she is in this editorial. But maybe its ME who is way off the farm.

The Cliff Notes version: Alexander suggests that Microsoft's idea of being an entertainment hub is flawed because no one has a TV anymore, and living rooms are a concept that we've left behind.

I think she's just projecting her hipster journalist lifestyle on the general public. I don't doubt that she doesn't have a living room or a TV but that doesn't mean Jane and Joe Consumer and their kids don't have one.

One comment to her post really resonated with me and it was something like "I'm sure this is true for that segment of the audience who has moved out of their parents house but not yet really settled down with a family of their own."

Prediction: By the time the Xbox One launches, or perhaps very shortly thereafter, Nyko or Pelican or someone like that will have for sale the "Kinect Kover," a molded plastic shield that fits over your Kinect to ensure your privacy during those times when you're not using your Xbox.

Catching up on more Xbox One coverage.. there is SO much confusion around 2 pretty simple questions: does the Xbox One need to be online, and will we be able to buy and sell used games.

Boiling down everything I've read, it seems that the One doesn't have to always be connected, but has to connect periodically, which in some ways is just as bad (a kid's room in a home with no wireless, for instance).

On the used games, MS has said that yes, we'll be able to buy and sell used games, but after that they start waffling on the details, such as how this will all work and if there're any fees attached.

Stupid, MS. Just tell us clearly how these systems work. Creating a bunch of FUD about it isn't helping your brand any.

SyFy is running a Defiance Marathon this Saturday. The show stumbled a bit at the start but (IMO anyway) it's been getting better and better with every new episode. If you were on the fence but gave it up after 1 or 2 episodes, you might want to give it a second try this weekend.

I'd actually forgotten that Kinect is REQUIRED for Xbox One. Apparently if you disconnect it, the system doesn't work.

Now, what does that really mean? If it's plugged in but facing the wall, will the system work? Or does it have to be plugged in and calibrated and happy with how the room looks and all that?

Good post on CNET about TV and Xbox One. Author spotted an "IR Out" port on the back of the Xbox One which opens up a lot of uncomfortable questions.

From MS's Xbox One FAQ:

Q: Do I need to have a specific cable or satellite TV provider to watch live TV on Xbox?

A: Our goal is to enable live TV through Xbox One in every way that it is delivered throughout the world, whether that's television service providers, over the air or over the Internet, or HDMI-in via a set top box (as is the case with many providers in the US). The delivery of TV is complex and we are working through the many technologies and policies around the world to make live TV available where Xbox One is available.

My interpretation: it'll work great with a few of the major cable providers at launch....Comcast for sure since that's who they were using during the... more »

#NewsBlur is supposed to be rolling out a new redesign today on both its web version and it's iOS and Android apps. If you're still looking for a Google Reader replacement, you might want to check it out.

I looked at it early on when Google first announced the death of Reader but the site was pretty much underwater (understandably). The free version limits you to 60 sites, but personally I'd rather pay for a service at this point than gamble on the idea that whatever I switch to is going to go "poof.' I think NewsBlur is $24/year so not big money by any stretch of the imagination.

It's possibly TOO feature-rich and seems to emphasize sharing and 'intelligent' filtering of content, neither of which really interest me.

I'll have to take a look at the apps before I make a decision...

Signed up for my trial of Google Music All Access. I swear I've tried every streaming music service at this point and never stick with any of them for whatever reason. Mostly these days I depend on SiriusXM's online mode even though it's expensive.

But so far I like All Access mechanically at least. It's nice to have my music mixed with 'rental music' and be able to listen to both whereever I go. I like that their genre stuff breaks down into sub-genres, and they have play lists created by human beings, which I generally prefer over machine-generated stuff.

What I haven't done yet is a lot of searching to see what music they have and what music they don't. That's often the Achilles's Heel of these services, but Google eases that problem (if it is even a problem) by mixing in the stuff you own with their stuff.

It's $10/monthwhi... more »

Lola vs the turtle.

You probably can't see the box turtle hiding under that bush. As far as I could see, the only movement he made was to peek his head out a little to see if the dog-monster had moved on.

Lola, however, is treating him like a rattlesnake on the hunt or something. Before I started filming she was standing there barking at the poor turtle... she's such a fierce hunter!

On May 9th I got an email saying my #Ouya  was finally on it's way to me.  Or at least, it had arrived at their distribution center. The email told me to be on the lookout for a follow-up with a tracking number which would be sent "_once your shipment has been picked up for delivery_"

On the 13th I got that follow-up email but when I tried to track it, DHL said it wasn't in the system. I tried again the next day but still no love.

Today I got another copy of the follow-up email with the same tracking number in it, but DHL still can't find the number in their system.

I'm hoping by tomorrow afternoon it'll finally show up but getting two identical emails 3 days apart has me a little worried...

So who pays attention to the "Recommended" suggestions on gear? I was doing so since I'm very lazy, but they seem to be making less and less sense (I just hit 25). I took some screenshots to illustrate but, duh, forgot NWN seems to hide the UI by default.

But like the game is still suggesting I use my blue Guardian's Founder weapon even though it does less damage and has worse stat bonuses than a green sword I found. I'm wondering if there's some hidden impact of rarity I'm not seeing or if that recommendation system is a little broke.

+Angela Taylor and I took Lola for a walk around Lake Pine in Cary (or maybe Apex?) today.

It's funny, the setting is almost identical to Lake Johnson which is here in Raleigh. But the people we met at Lake Pine were much friendlier and relaxed, and it's maybe a 15 minute drive away. Think we'll be heading to Lake Pine from now on. Plus there were lots of turtles and common water fowl (ducks, geese, herons) there, which LJ doesn't really have.

It's probably because Lake Pine is much less crowded. Navigating the paths around Lake Johnson can feel like walking down a city street on nice days!

Just a reminder that you should always explore all of a map even in regular quests. Just had one where the golden path barely touched one section of  map. After I finished the quest before I exited I decided to take a wander around and found some chests (guarded) and some resource nodes that I never would've seen if I hadn't been nosy. :)

2013-05-03 22:26:06 (5 comments, 0 reshares, 0 +1s)

So still figuring out stuff with Professions. I think I must be either missing some nuance or they still have work to do.

For example there's a Level 2 Leadership Task (Guard Duty) that gives:

100 copper
150 Adventure experience
40 Leadership experience
takes 2 hours

Then there's a Level 3 Rare Leadership Task (Extended Guard Duty) that gives:

200 copper
75 Adventure Experience
40 Leadership Experience
takes 6 hours

Unless you were desperate for copper and weren't going to have access to the Gateway for the next 4 hours, why would you choose the higher level rare over the lower level standard task?

What am I missing?

Looking for a quality solo Foundry Quest to earn your 1,000 RAD for the day? Once you've done Winins, you should move on to A Hidden Blade. It's got a solid story and a next mix of adventuring and combat.

Hey #neverwinter  players... anyone know what drops labeled just as "treasure" are for? I've been vendoring this stuff but I see people are selling them on the auction house so now I'm wondering if it serves a purpose.

Stuff like "Explorer's Journal" or "Embroidered Purse."

I foresee a lot of trouble googling stuff for this game and not getting results from the old Bioware NWN titles...

Kick ass time in #Defiance  tonight. I'm not actually sure...does everyone get the same contracts? Whatever the reason, somewhere between 5 & 10 people (the number ebbed and flowed) were working up and down the highway where the Aegis #1 side mission is -- the one where you have to reboot sentry guns to take out raiders along the road? Tons of raiders spawning there, and I at least have a contract to take out tankers, and every 'wave' of raiders ended with one of those bad boys.

Whatever the reason they were all there, it was glorious chaos since a hellbug nest kept spawning, so we have players, hellbugs and raiders all brawling together. Couple of healer-types, some rockets. Me, I'm checking out SMGs for a while but had my trusty Ranger double-tap sniper at hand, too. Raiders had those elite shield carrying dudes that can be so hard to get behind alone. But with a friendo... more »

I tell you what, I can't wait for the day twitch.tv shuts down and something with decent customer service replaces it. I was just in a stream as a spectator and one of the guys doing the stream asked a question. I looked up the answer and posted a link to it.

Some bot program deleted my message and scolded me for posting porn to the chat.

Humiliating and disrespectful. Oh, and I'm a paying member of Twitch, though I'm off to cancel that right now.

They're doing a Q&A on Raptr today. I was interested to see this:

Q: Has there been any talk about bringing Defiance to the next generation of consoles? With the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 on their way out the door for many gamers, it seems to me that the playerbases would begin to dwindle as many players upgraded consoles. I don't know the logistics, of course, but having shared servers would be remarkable. That is to say, a shared server between the PS3/PS4 as well as a shared server between the 360/Next Xbox. In short, the lack of a next-gen plan will spell doom for the consoles versions of Defiance.

A: 2. Yes, yes and yes. We're as interested as the rest of the world in the next generation of consoles and for us, like you point out, this is very much just another platform for the Defiance client to be on and a natural progression. Stay tuned.
