By moving beyond gaming, MS thinks they can sell "upwards of a billion" Xbox One consoles. (They sold about 300 million Xbox 360s.)

I'm willing to bet this is an accurate leak. In fact I (and many others) have speculated that this will be how things work. There pretty much had to be some kind of buy-in from retailers or else there'd be no way to know that the customer had 'de-associated' his game with his Xbox Live account. Once you have that much of a system in place, taking a cut becomes almost mandatory (since supporting that system will have costs for MS).
Biggest surprise to me, and it's a nice one, is that publishers will get a cut, too.

Shameless self-promotion time. I don't recall seeing anyone in my circles talking about this yesterday so...

Polygon rolled out a new article page design and they'd done some interesting things. Most important is that it's a lot faster than it used to be. Nice job!

So one factoid from the Xbox One reveal that I thought would get a lot more attention is this "offloading computing tasks to the cloud" feature. Y'know, like the new SimCity does (?).
I thought for sure we'd have a field day with that one but so far no one seems to have poked at it much. Or if they have, I've missed it.

Google's new 'semantic' voice search is live on Chrome 27 and it's CRAZY! So I say "Who is the president of the United States" and I get search results for Obama plus a voice telling me, Siri-like, "The president of the United States is Barak Obama." and then I saw "When is his birthday?" and the voice tells me Obama's birthday.
The only downside is I still have to click the microphone icon. When they first demoed it, you could just say "Google" or something to 'get it's attention.'

I don't often agree with what Leigh Alexander has to say, but rarely have I felt she was so far off the farm as she is in this editorial. But maybe its ME who is way off the farm.
The Cliff Notes version: Alexander suggests that Microsoft's idea of being an entertainment hub is flawed because no one has a TV anymore, and living rooms are a concept that we've left behind.
I think she's just projecting her hipster journalist lifestyle on the general public. I don't doubt that she doesn't have a living room or a TV but that doesn't mean Jane and Joe Consumer and their kids don't have one.
One comment to her post really resonated with me and it was something like "I'm sure this is true for that segment of the audience who has moved out of their parents house but not yet really settled down with a family of their own."
