"Discussion". Paris.

I love people watching. This was taken just now across from Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral. What the heck was she saying? Something very passionate, I'm sure. They are French!

Taken with Fuji X-T10, 16-55mm lens. Processed on my iPhone5 in Snapseed.

Happy Stillness... Cisco Grove, California
I go out into nature for the sheer life force of it all,
for the never-the-same-twice thrill
and for the sheer happiness I feel when standing
in the deep, loving stillness of it all.

Awash... Paris, France
This crazy, mystical sunset happened one night in Paris, my last week there. I had my +Really Right Stuff  tripod with me - lugged it all dang day, in fact - only to realize that I hadn't put the L-plates back on my camears. DOH! So when THIS started happening, I had to make do with whatever I could set the camera down upon. This was one of the darker exposures I took, which left everything in silhouette so the imagination could have its way.

Imaginations like that.
So do I. :D

Our first big weather of the summer!! WooHOOO!! (see why I get excited for monsoon season? This isn't that yet... just our mountain summer thunderstorms.)

It worked out well, since all the drama was pretty going on over our house - and I was committed to working on taming the wild tundra; 3' of grasses and weeds leapt out of the ground while I was in France! It was all about to be one scary fire hazard. So we rented a big honkin' mower for today: yesterday I had to do a bunch of prep work.

While I was out mowing with my human-sized machine - THIS happened! I had to keep moving (you can't mow wet grass; I was determined to get as much chopped as I could before it rained too much.)... but I stopped long enough to take a quick handheld pano of the double rainbow just forming... and a wide angle later, once it settled in.

It smelled, looked and felt absolutely, frickin' fantastic! (I liked it, in other words. heh.) I just love it when the heavens bring the show to me. Makes me feel not so left out when I have to stick around the homestead. Grinning. Really big.___

"Panorama= The unbroken view..."
That's how "Panorama" is described by definition. I love that idea... in life AND photography.

I talk about my own unfolding story with the mighty panorama on my blog: http://karenhutton.com/pano, and of course there's a whole bunch of images.

Now I've got a +Really Right Stuff pano head (woot!)... filters are coming... and I'm getting ready for monsoon season in the mountains and beyond. The BIG view coming!!!

I took image below of Pont Neuf in Paris only a couple of weeks ago. (le sigh.) It's maybe 8 or 9 images taken with my Fuji X-T10 and 16-55mm lens for that, you know, big view. :D

To the Manor Born... the backroads of France
Out in the French countryside, you drive by places like this. If you're us, you stop and leap out... and get your friend who speaks French to ask for permission to come in and photograph. (it's granted.)

You peer in through the gate and see THIS!! It's hard to know where to start, so you just stand there for a minute, breathing it all in. Then you do your best to let the stories come to YOU... because chasing after them would take you deep into another time, history and other dimensions. There are so many layers, so much speaking all at once!

You choose your reality selection of the moment... and press the shutter.

PS... that's my hubby +Joe Dolister  on the terrace of this chateau. He gets my flights of fancy and helps me always find my way home again. He also gives you a sense of the scale of thej... more »

Making Stellar stories is like eating potato chips... once you start, ya just can't stop!

I've made more of them (you can get the app here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/steller/id785128002?mt=8) ... including this one of Lake Tahoe. It's addicting!

Today, this one was hit the Top 20 most viewed list, as well as Stellar's "Action + Outdoors" collection.

If you have (or get) the app... I'm karenhutton over there.
In the meantime, here's my page where you can have a gander at all my stories: https://steller.co/karenhutton.

Nope, I'm not on their payroll or anything even remotely like that... it's just kind of captured my imagination. I'm going to do a couple or few on Paris too! There are some videos and stuff I haven't shared anywhere yet. I'm testing out some ideas...

Out in the French countryside, you're driving along late in the evening... and suddenly espy something incredible. "STOP!!" you holler (clearly you aren't actually driving, someone else is - otherwise it would be weird to yell at yourself like that).

You peer across the fields and see THIS (below) and your new best friend, who's doing the driving chuckles, because he knew this was there and secretly couldn't wait to hear you gasp at the startling splendor of Mont St Michel gleaming in the night sky. We leap out of the car and run across the field, trying not to break an ankle in the dark. The rest... is pixelry.

So do I. :D

"Grains & Spider"... Courtils, France
This one's SOOC from my Fuji X-T1, 55-200mm lens out in the countryside of France. I just loved the grains that were just turned golden from their spring green. The icelandic poppies that dotted them only made them even more awesome!

I posted a ton more photos from my France trip here: http://karenhutton.com/paintbrush.

Tomorrow on my blog... the countryside of France and how social media brought us a new and wonderful friend. :D

I'm getting ready to travel up home to the mountains today. I can't wait to get out and see the lakes, rivers and granite!!

The Mighty +Peter Adams ... California Coast

Last night, I joined Peter, +Barry Blanchard and +Traci Furtado to photograph sunset along the beach. It wasn't the most spectacular light show I've ever seen, but there were some lovely moments to be had. Like this one! Part reality, part... not. You know how I do. ;)

Peter is an absolutely fantastic fine art photographer (http://www.peteradamsphoto.com), tech and business guru and awesome friend. He was standing RIGHT there... squarely in the space between what my eyes and mind saw. It looked kinda like this (fitting, since his wife Nyla is fantasy/science fiction writer). Good times...

I tried Stellar recently. Have you heard of it? It's new to me. (Here's my just-started Stellar page: https://steller.co/karenhutton) It's yet another app built for telling your stories with images, video and text.

I wrote a post on my blog about my little adventure here: http://karenhutton.com/stellar.

There are several of these around; I think they get better with each iteration.

For some reason though, I got a wild hair to really give this one one a twirl, rather than just window shop. Probably because it's pretty. That's what caught my eye first. And it's super easy to use... always a plus in my book! It excels on mobile; on iPhone now (I know! I’m sorry Androidians! They ARE working on the Android version). I dunno, I just like it.

But here's my Mountains story (below)... I made it night before last. It's already on the top 20 list and included in their Action & Outdoors collection! I just love this stuff. And I have ideas!! [Mischievous grin]

If I stayed in Paris longer, I'd probably make an "on a bike" series and make lots of stupid puns like my title here. heh. There's something about trains and people on bikes, I dunno what it is. I just love 'em!
So... just another day by the Louvre in Paris, trying to catch photographic firefiles. More of that, please!

Whew! I think I've recovered from jet lag now. Back amongst the living!

I'm getting up to speed again with this big fat blog post. So many folks have asked me what I thought about Fuji cameras on my nearly month-long trip to France (I took along a X-T1 and X-T10 with 3 lenses)... I thought I'd get that out there right off the bat. Yes, it's love!

For me, gear needs to partner up in the creative process in a particular way if I'm going to get all stoked about it. I didn't think I'd find the right one this soon in the mirrorless game. Surprise!

Aahhhh, as we wait in yet another airport line on our travel day home, I keep thinking back to Paris moments like this one at Saint Sulpice. Apt for a Sunday, eh?

Today, we volunteered for a later flight for a sweet $500 credit. It just meant one more stop, which frankly I don't mind. 12 hr flights are just not top of my "favorite things" list.
So, one more line, one more wait to get on a plane, one more leg and we're home. Well, after shuttling to the car park place and driving an hour and a half. OK, so yeah. Then we're home. 😉

Beautiful Honfleur in Normandy is stunning!
The harbor is incredible. The food: fantastic. The rain... drenching! (wish they could send some o' that to California).

The cool thing was that I finally managed to do a +Virtual Photo Walks™! It was my second from France. Of course, what happens? We finally had enough bandwidth, but got rained out. Well, sorta.

What REALLY happened was we went to a cafe right on the harbor, set up VPW, ordered some wine, cheese and bread and chatted about stuff like being in France, some of the stories from the past 3 weeks of being here, the importance of asking for what you want, Fuji cameras... you know. It was just like friends hanging out in a French cafe in the rain. 😀

I took this quick iPhone is panorama as a memory. We were hanging out and eating at the restaurant right there on the corner. In fact, we closed down the joint!

I can't believe that we drive back to the city and fly home on Sunday. Waaah!! Has it been 3+ weeks already?? It's been amazing. Sooo much more to share. But there's no rush... it'll be like a long, slow sip of chocolate goodness, tasted over time.

With +Joe Dolister and +Mike Staubes...who's been our awesome driver and guide the past few days. THAT'S a story unto itself!___

Well mom... you were right! I asked that something awesome, unique AND that spoke to my soul to happen when I visited the Paris Opera House last week... and wow-oh-wow did it ever happen!!!

I wrote about the whole thing on my blog; http://karenhutton.com/opera... and included the photos, which hopefully, bring you right along with me! It was a miraculously fabulous and unexpected experience.

It also includes the 9 (or was it 10?) shot panorama I shot HANDHELD of the entrance to the Opera House. No tripods allowed... but I figure, why let that stop me? I taught my own self a lesson-for-life on that one!

All the images from France that I've been posting were shot with them... including the low light action shots in this blog post.

I've wanted to visit the Paris Opera House for soooooo long!
When I finally had the chance... I jumped at it. What a BLAST!

This is an iPhone5 panorama, but I also made a 9 or 10 frame, handheld pano that I posted on my blog: http://karenhutton.com/opera, along with photos from the surprise film crew and dancers that were set up in Le Foyer when I got there.

It turned into a magical, unexpected slice 'o awesomeness!!

This evening in Paris, I took +Virtual Photo Walks™ out into a neighborhood close to where I'm staying. We visited the Place de la Contrascarpe and walked by Ernest Hemingway's old apartment.

In the early 1900's, Hemingway rented a room because he believed it had once been occupied by the famous poet Verlaine and he wanted it to rub off. He wan't alone in seeking inspiration... James Joyce worked on "Ulysses" in this 'hood too.

In those days,  Place de la Contrescarpe was, according to George Orwell (who also lived there), a dreadful neighborhood where no policeman dared to go alone after dark.

Now it's all upscale and right out of a magazine... and I got to show it to my VPW peeps, bringing them to a super cool place they wouldn't be able to see any other way... walking for those who can't. Made my whole day. siiigh.

The Maestro ... Paris, France
Every evening, he plays at the Place de la Contrescarpe. I don't know what I love more... his music, his attitude or his suit.

I walked by this gentleman yesterday, while he and a violinist were playing Happy Birthday to couple at an outdoor cafe. I got a good look at the fabric of his suit... it's some kind of fabric with a pearl-like finish. It made me think of a sharkskin suit, but I never really saw one of those up close before. I almost reached out and touched it. Then I thought better of it: his accordion would have left a big dent. heh. But every day, he plays and smiles and sways to his beautiful French music, then comes and politely asks for a contribution.

He's awesome.

First (and far from last!) blog post with a whole slew of new images from Paris!

What an incredible, brilliant city. And playing the part of street photographer with +Valerie Jardin and her phenomenal crew of workshop participants this week is a doubly incredible way to see it!

Here Goes... Paris France
I could take pictures of the stairs where I'm staying in Paris all day long.
Aren't you glad I didn't? Heh!

Poised to head out for an incredible day #1 joining +Valerie Jardin as a guest of her Paris Street Photography workshop... I wondered so many things. Who would I meet? What would we see? Would I feel like a stranger in a strange land? Would it even matter? I'm in Paris!!

As it turned out, the answers were: awesome people... amazing things... not really ... MAIS NON!

Stayed up till 5am... now getting ready for my second full day of shooting. yawn. Heh.

Finally on a plane bound for Paris! WooHoo! Sure takes alot to get outta town...there's nothing like the feeling of sitting in your seat, knowing that - done or undone - there is really nothing more you CAN do. Time to turn it over and catch y'all on the flip side. There WILL be more photos coming from France!!

Oh...and here's one of my companions this trip; the brand spankin' new Fuji XT10 with a wee little 27mm lens I'm trying. Let's see what I can cook up! [runs hands together conspiratorially, giggling gleefully]

And dang...photos got reversed. I never get that part right!

WooHoo!! +Virtual Photo Walks™ is growing... big time!!
Many of you know I work with and walk for VPW when I can... and hope to do so when I'm in France over the next 3 weeks.

This announcement is GREAT news....

RESOLUTIONCARE, VIRTUAL PHOTO WALKS AND ZOOM.us ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP May 15, 2015
Patient-centered alliance brings nature indoors for those unable to go outdoors
ONTARIO, CANADA & EUREKA, CA – MAY 6, 2015 – ResolutionCare, Virtual Photo Walks and Zoom today announced a partnership agreement that will enable people with serious and life limiting illness to enjoy the freedom to experience places and people they can only dream about.
“As we face disability or even the approach of our death, many people experience a new way of seeing. Offering them Virtual Photo Walks to experience the natural world through this lens is transformative and healing,” said Michael D. Fratkin, MD, Founder/Director at ResolutionCare.
A palliative care organization pioneering alternative models of healthcare delivery, ResolutionCare’s alliance with Virtual Photo Walks and Zoom extends ResolutionCare’s ability to provide patient-centered, compassionate care to people everywhere.
Since 2011, Virtual Photo Walks, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, is a charity that harnesses the power of cloud-based videoconferencing technology including Zoom to enable the disabled, infirm and those isolated and hospitalized – young and old – to visit distant places. Using “virtual volunteer guides” equipped with smart phones, the disabled can participate in immersive, real-time experiences of places they will likely never see first- hand. They can interact with each other and their virtual photographer guide in each private videoconference.
“ At Virtual Photo Walks, we walk the walk for those that can’t,” said John Butterill Founder/Director. “Our organization is widely recognized for its unique approach to making a difference in people’s lives.”
ResolutionCare is dedicated to providing and teaching the highest quality of palliative care. The organization has also been harnessing the opportunities provided by Zoom cloud-based videoconferencing technology to care for people with serious illnesses entirely in their home. Team based and person-centered, ResolutionCare supports quality of life, empowered decision making, and self determination for people navigating life’s greatest challenge.
“Zoom is honored to be part of the amazing care and services that organizations like ResolutionCare and Virtual Photo Walks provide to people who are going through difficult challenges and experiences,” said Eric Yuan, CEO. “Through important partnerships like this, we believe that technology can and should be a tool that enhances the connection and closeness between care providers and those who rely on them,” he added.

I've found a mirrorless home.
So here's the thing. At least in my own mind, I've been over here minding my own business, on the mission of finding the mirrorless system that will perform some magic for me. I've had my list of requirements, along with the experience I'm looking to have, the results I want to get. I've been sharing the process on my blog, mostly... and boy, it's been a journey! Here's where I've landed; Fuji. Hands-down.

Then Fuji called. Check it out: http://karenhutton.com/itbegins.  I'm still kind of amazed - and excited!!

I go out into nature for the sheer life force of it all,

Imagination is one of our most powerful reality creators! Giving mine a workout in photography... especially in photo processing... has shifted my own everyday reality in miraculous ways.

When life becomes your best form of art... That's where the cool stuff is, baby!

Oh, and that's what got me going on this blog post: http://karenhutton.com/ip. 😄
