Raspberry/Orange Brown Butter Muffins

Raspberries from the freezer, frozen when they were in season last year. Opening the freezer bag, the intense smell of raspberries filled the kitchen. Bringing the remembrance of summertime!

Big, plump, fragrant raspberries are such a treat this time of year. Using Cara cara orange zest and juice, the zest in the muffins. The juice, in a simple sugar/orange juice glaze, brushed on the hot muffins. I find when I zest a citrus fruit, I like to use the juice right away. No accidentally forgetting about the naked citrus in the fridge.

Using brown butter, brings a nutty deliciousness to the muffins.

Raspberry/Orange Brown Butter Muffins
Oven: 325 F

5 cups AP Flour
2 cups sugar
4 tbsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
zest of 1 orange

4 eggs, lightly beaten
2 1/2 cups of buttermilk

1/2 lb of melted and cooled brown butter

Frozen raspberries as needed.

Whisk together the first 5 ingredients.

Mix the eggs and buttermilk together.

Add the wet to the dry mixture and mix well. Stir in the brown butter.

Brush your muffin tins with baking goop or muffin cups (baking goop is so much better). Place 1 tbsp of the muffin mix in the bottom of your muffin tin. Add 3 raspberries, another heaping tablespoon of muffin mix, more raspberries.

Bake for about 30 - 40 minutes or until a toothpick poked into the muffin, comes out clean.

While the muffins are baking, juice your orange, add a scant 1/8 - 1/4 cup of sugar and heat on the stove (in a pot) until the sugar is dissolved.

When your muffins are done baking, while they are still hot, brush with the orange glaze. Remove the muffins to a rack to cool.

Here is the technique to make brown butter:

Literature is very serious business.

"The discussion on the merits of poetry over prose soon escalated into a lethal brawl"

One of those articles that gives you some perspective. I mean, my views just aren't that strong, I'd say.
The 53 year old former teacher was a guest at the older man's home in Russia, and was arguing that real literature is poetry. The host, a 67 year old man, argued that it was prose. The guest ended up killing the older man for his views during the argument with a knife before fleeing. He was later captured.

Also recently in Russia, a man was shot during an argument over the theories of Immanuel Kant.

Russia: serious arguments.

It would be nice if we could focus a bit more on helping each other thrive rather than holding each other under the water.

Baby Boxes Are Awesome and Surrendering Moms Are Heroes

I saw this story and thought, "Wait, those have been around for awhile, is this really news to anyone?" http://www.mothering.com/articles/baby-boxes-safer-way-surrender-child/

But apparently it is news to some people that in some places in the world, there are safe, monitored ways for an unwanted baby to be dropped off so it can be cared for.

And apparently some people are offended by this, in particular because some of the groups who run some of these things are anti-abortion groups.  But I'd frankly rather see anti-abortion groups doing more exactly like this to support mothers and babies where the mother has either chosen or been required to give birth, rather than have these groups out attacking women making a different choice earlier in the pregnancy.  Too many anti-abortion groups only give a crap about a fetus until it's born; these groups are showing that they legitimately care about the resulting baby, and I can respect them for that part of their work, at least.

Apparently other people are upset that this unfair to the babies who won't know about their birth parents.  Um...yeah, okay, but you know what's worse for a baby than not knowing about its birth parents?  Dying a multi-day slow painful death of cold and starvation.  Robin will probably never know anything about her birth father and will know very little about her birth mother.  Pretty sure she's glad her birth mother had her in a hospital and listened to her own mother about calling an adoption agency instead of just walking away.  And even if she had just walked away, that still would have been better than having the baby in some hidden way and leaving her to die somewhere.  Robin is alive and thriving (and throwing an unrelated tantrum) right now because her birth mom surrendered her safely.

Birth mothers who surrender babies to hospitals, baby boxes, or other safe means need to be supported and applauded, not derided, not harassed for interacting with anti-abortion groups, not interrogated.

Would it be better if everyone had access to proper birth control so unwanted pregnancies never happened?  HELL YES.  Is that the world we live in?  HELL NO.  Would it be a better world if every mother could feasibly care for her baby, including those who a wider society devalues (ie girl babies) or will require a tremendous amount of care (ie severely disabled babies)?  HELL YES.  Again, is that the realistic world we live in?  NOPE.  So stop blaming mothers who maturely, rationally realize they can't cope.

Those who decry the baby box need to get over themselves, stop concern trolling, and check their privilege.  Parenting is really, really fucking hard.  Parenting while poor is so much harder.  Parenting alone is so much harder.  Parenting in a social situation that will punish you for having had sex/pregnancy is so so so much harder.  Parenting a disabled child without support and a fully paid health care system is so so so much harder.  These moms who surrender babies are HEROES for doing it.

And until such time as we see fit to actually fix misogyny, health care, and poverty, STFU and put in more baby boxes.  Make this easier and safer.

That's called being a human being.

#adoption   #choice   #parenting   #mothering  ___It would be nice if we could focus a bit more on helping each other thrive rather than holding each other under the water.

So, I've been watching this, and rewatching as I've been using the minimal words to help lull myself to sleep, and being awake in the middle of it tonight is a bit strange, but...

I just caught the narrator saying something about there being no one around to appreciate <time period being shown>, no poets, no painters, etc., and it got me to thinking. If dinosaurs could have done cave painting, would they have lasted this far into the future, minus a cave being sealed off, effectively becoming a time machine?

Dark emotive poetry is something I love. It balances out how much I adore Shel Silverstein.

Woo hoo. 3 months in the making. Finally finished something for what it's worth.

Unpalatable Feast

Through my window I see,
the world eating itself,
slowly from the inside.
Laid out before my eyes,
society in its splendour,
saturated in cynicism.

Ambiguous statements
corrupting weak wills,
and destroying cohesion.
Pronouncements collapse,
leaving hollow remarks,
beliefs lie shattered.

Filtering quaint platitudes,
that create expectation,
finding only deception.
Unravelling passions,
that spin out of control,
leave cold hearts exposed.

Layers peeled back,
reveal distorted reality,
wheels within wheels.
Turned upside down,
worlds fall apart,
devouring themselves.

Escher is a perennial favourite, much like Dali. I especially liked the quote that +Vicky Veritas included with her share:
In our judgement the view over Castrovalva can be regarded as the best work Escher has so far produced. Technically it is quite perfect; as the portrayal of nature it is wonderfully exact; yet at the same time there is about it an air of fantasy. This is Castrovalva from without, but even more so it is Castrovalva from within. For the very essence of this unknown place, of this mountain path, these clouds, that horizon, this valley, the essence of the whole composition is an inner synthesis, a synthesis which came into being long before this work of art was made....it is on this imposing page that Castrovalva has been displayed in all its fearsome unity.

Nothing says "don't try this alone" better than having a bookshelf strip screws and collapse while trying to move it.

It'd been about 1.5 years since putting it together, I forgot how craptastic it had proved itself to be. (So much so that its twin was left as two half shelves instead of fastened together.)

"Instead of asking, 'How do we study the immune response of the brain?' 'Why do multiple sclerosis patients have the immune attacks?' now we can approach this mechanistically. Because the brain is like every other tissue connected to the peripheral immune system through meningeal lymphatic vessels," said Jonathan Kipnis, PhD, professor in the UVA Department of Neuroscience and director of UVA's Center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG). "It changes entirely the way we perceive the neuro-immune interaction. We always perceived it before as something esoteric that can't be studied. But now we can ask mechanistic questions."

If you dig sparkly artsy shoes, do yourself a favor and go look at their store. So many pairs I'd buy if circumstances were different.

Ooo...

Via +Malka Older, a really amazing list of SF/F/H on sale for under $5. I just bought a whole bunch of C. L. Moore, a time travel anthology that looks reasonably decent, all of Jack Vance's early work, and a collection of Lavie Tidhar short stories.

You should also look out for The Grace of Kings, a "silkpunk" epic fantasy that feels mythic and fresh at the same time; The Bees, which is the best novel with a bee protagonist you will ever read; Lagoon, which posits an alien landing in Lagos; and Nova and Babel-17, two classic Delaneys.

Happy reading!
