Storm over Abraham Lake

Wow... I finally caught up with some processing over the weekend. This is an image I made this winter when I met up with +Rob Tilley at Abraham Lake. This was made on the first day when I had just arrived at the lake. 

The clouds were AWE-SOME! Very moody, windy and rapidly changing conditions. The light was flat, but the sky was pretty. I didn't see a lot of photographers out on the lake that day. 

I did meet some friendly (but horribly unprepared) Japanese tourists who where very disappointed that the lake did not contain the wonderful bubbles that it is known for.  

I couldn't care less because I knew what I saw was wicked. Once they were gone I jumped on the ice, found this little snow drift and shot a roll of film.

I know I know. Most of you are still waiting for 'my big reveal'. You will have to wait a little longer for me to 'officially' spill the beans but it's a fairly big deal. 

For now, I present to you the portfolio I worked on for the last 3 weeks. In the end it turned into a 16 photograph portfolio covering The Prairies. This slideshow was part of the leave behind package I made for the venue.

All photographs were printed using archival pigment ink on Ilford Pearl, T-hinged to acid free museum board and matted using 8-ply mattes to 16x20". Obviously up to par with the highest museum standards.

Before and After

Here's the promised Before and After of the previous uploaded photograph.
There's no secrets about what I do here. Just a bunch of burning, little bit of dodging and a contrast adjustment. Simple...
The original scan could use a bit more contrast but I'm sure this negative will print awesome.

Epic Light

Here's another one from our trip to Montana. 
We were on this random range road that day. Nothing to see really, but frantically looking for something to photograph, when the road started to rise.

We were joking when we were approaching the crest. "Epic view, epic view, please give us an epic view". And then "BOOM" here's your EPIC VIEW! 

Everybody jumped out of the car and quickly set up the camera. Awesome light was spilling over the fields in front of us. Absolutely amazing. This scene and moment made our days.

Square Butte, MT

Hey here's a name I didn't make up! :)

This is taken – yet again – from Interstate 15 south of Great Falls, somewhere between Ulm and Cascade. This this is called a Butte. It's an isolated hill with steep, vertical sides and relatively flat top. Square Butte is a 4,728 ft / 1,441 m mountain peak and was a landmark back in the day...

Again light, sky and setting where amazing driving in that day. Although prohibited by traffic laws (I found out later), I stopped on the shoulder of the Interstate. I simply HAD to photograph this. It was too good to pass up.

The Broccoli Tree

Ha... yeah I know. Funny name. But that was what this little tree reminded me off. This was photographed in Yellowstone NP 2 weeks ago. Beautiful park (although we only saw the north part of it due to winter road closures)! 

Funny story. We were driving back and I saw this tree on this hill from a long ways away. It's like my eyes are constantly scanning for things like this. Turned out... This little one was on a hill besides the Yellowstone National Park Training Center. 

Yeah I know.
PURE WILDERNESS! :)

But the light was so good (soft veil in front of the sun). The angle and shape was so interesting. I couldn't resist! I HAD to photograph this.

By a lack of a better name I call this 'The Broccoli Tree'. Just for now... :D

MOM, DAD, I MADE IT ON A ROCK ALBUM COVER!

Tower Rock Nat' Park MT

Here's a first photograph from out trip to Montana 2 weeks ago.
I developed 2 films over the weekend. Just by luck film no1 and a film that contains one of my favourite photographs of the whole trip.

Kista Peak Sunrise

Who said photographing a colorful sunrise in black and white is pointless?
I thought so in the past anyways. I'm glad I've seen the light.

Literally. Because that's exactly what the difference is in my opinion.

Abraham Mountain

OK just trying to squeeze this one in for #mountainmonday   hosted by my friend +Michael Russell . 

This was photographed a couple of weeks ago. Yes I just scanned it in. No I didn't develop it yesterday instead it was laying on my 'to do' pile. Let's say I finally found a minute or two to post process this.

This was photographed on a sunny afternoon where big clouds where performing a dance with the sun. I waited about 30 min to finally be able to photograph a patch of light moving across the forest you see in the foreground.

Settings I don't recall. But I had the red filter on.

Sunset

Here's something different...
Well not really. But it's a welcome change from all the snow stuff I've been trying to do lately.

This is also my contribution to #mountainmonday   (It's been FOR-EVER!) hosted by the very talented +Michael Russell 

An interesting sunset I photographed not too long ago. So many layers where getting illuminated by the setting sun. And then this little cloud popped up out of nowhere. 

If I had to tell you the settings, I have no clue anymore other than I used the tele convertor on the good old trusty RB...

Crooked

I am off for a 2 day stint to Abraham Lake tomorrow, for a little soul searching and for meeting with +Rob Tilley  . I am very much looking forward to meeting Rob. It has been long overdue. Rob was one of the very first people I started following on Twitter. And Rob has always proved to be a very helpful and supportive photographer, for which I thank him a lot.

I want to share this photograph with you that I made last weekend. The reason why I'm sharing this, is because I am slowly zoning in on a particular look I like in my negatives.

When I exposed this photograph I measured 3 zones of light. THREE! This scene was as flat as a pancake, light wise that is. I placed the shadows on Zone III and the highlights (snow and sky) barely went over Zone V. BIG problem. Why? You really need tonal separation to make a compelling print. Before and After

I just realized something.

Why don't I show you how the Peyto scene 'really' registered on film in a new before and after...

Here's what I did. I placed the dark foreground trees on Zone III. The lake fell on Zone VII. Sky on Zone V and foreground snow on about VI. I overdeveloped this N+1 in DD-x for 14 minutes.

Peyto Lake in Winter

Here's a first result of this weekend's outing to Peyto together with +Paul Zizka. I say result because this is a 'meh' image.

I don't feel strongly about this at all. 

Why?

Because I believe conditions are everything when you are photographing in the Rockies. And when the light isn't there, whatever you do, whatever you 'think' you are doing, is wrong. It will never give you spectacular results even with spectacular scenery in front of you.
 
I believe very strongly that everybody should work with the area around their home. Maybe even within a 50km radius. Sounds crazy right?

Think about this.

I can see the mountains from my place. The closest ones are about 45min away. The first National Park only 1h15 away. In my opinion that is too far away. If I would go out tot... more »

These submissions are getting totally out of hand. Not only in quantity but in QUALITY! Like I said in the video, I look at every single image I get on Monday and Tuesday. I make my initial, very wide selection on Monday night and fine tune on Tuesday night. I am really impressed by everybody's work this week. It is getting harder and harder to make a small and good selection every week. I have to leave out so many good photographs I wish I could talk faster so I could make the vids shorter. :)

A couple of updates

While #minimalmonday  is in full swing (OH my... I will have a tough job curating this week once again) a few random updates.

• I just returned from a weekend in Banff. I hung out with my dear friend +Paul Zizka having some food with the wives, going to an opening at the Whyte museum, photographing some night scenes and photographing a sunrise that never was. You know. Your 'regular' weekend.

• I learned a few things over the course of that weekend. 1. I am MASSIVELY out of shape! I died twice hiking to our sunrise spot. Once hiking in. Once on the return. ZIzka hardly broke a sweat. I had to sit down for a bit. There's a reason why I shoot prairies you know. 2. My knees aren't as good as they used to be. They start hurting. 3. I don't recuperate that fast anymore. I feel like I can still sleep for days.

Protect the Prairie

I usually don't let politics or believes mix into my professional pages but here is something I wholeheartedly approve.

In the 4 years I've lived around Calgary/Cochrane, I've seen this happening first hand. Oil and gas wells are being drilled all over. If that's a good or a bad thing that's for everyone to decide for themselves. But the thing is that these wells are being drilled in the beautiful grasslands in the south of the prairie provinces.

As a photographer that has based most of his work around these areas, I think it's a sad sight to see. But more importantly. It actually shows me how few people care about these lands. Sure they are not the protected national parks in the Rocky Mountains. But these grasslands are beautiful all in their own right. And need protection from the greed of man.

PLUS ONE Collection - I'M A FEATURED ARTIST

I am honoured that one of my photographs made it in the printed edition of +Ivan Makarov's 'Plus One Collection'-book project this year. This makes me very happy.
