So I got a newsletter today from bandjob.com, a startup I already abhorr, but this new campaign kicks the last nail in. Megastars KISS and bandjob believe giving some poor designer 1000$ is adequate compensation for a tshirt design that will go on to make a gazillion dollars in profit for the band. To make matters worse, several other designers will spend a lot of time designing this shirt and get nothing. This is SPEC at its worse.
Here are my problems with what bandjob is doing and why they are not helping anyone but themselves:
1. Contests hurt the design community by generating a competative environment that is not condusive to quality work.
2. Contests effectively eliminate designers or firms that may be the best match for the client (I don't know any designers or firms with a healthy client base and income stream that will waste time on contest sites)
3. Bands that ... more »

We sometimes get questions thrown our way by peers and customers alike such as "why don't you have 1, 576, 872 shortcodes?" or "why don't you make the theme drag and drop for better customization?" or "why don't you use static home pages?" and the short answer is that we strive to follow WordPress standards and design principles, rather than pack a ton of unneeded bloat and SEO failure into your website. Flatpack has Custom Editor Styles, a widgetized homepage option and page template (there is the drag n drop) plus everything else we thought businesses and freelancers might need on the front-end, all powered by efficient, lightweight code.
Check it out!

So the new Mega Upload (rebranded as just Mega) is really a gorgeous example of design and functionality, plus some very nice security features. The only problem is their use of HTML5 without the right doctype, but all good things come in time! Check it out

The problem with z-index is that very few people understand how it really works. It's not complicated, but it if you've never taken the time to read its specification, there are almost certainly crucial aspects that you're completely unaware of.
Don't believe me? Well, see if you can solve this problem:

Are you secure?
For site owners, plugins like Bulletproof Security and the more recent - but very effective- Wordfence security will help a great deal.
For developers, check out this article on Smashing. It was written prior to 3.4 but it is still relevant. http://wp.smashingmagazine.com/2011/11/10/securing-your-wordpress-website/

7 Benefits of the #Gmail Outage
1. You have more time to do something more spiritually fulfilling than read your email.
2. MaxGentleman and CanadianPharmacy can enjoy millions of bounced emails.
3. You'll be spared that depressing break-up, credit card payment due notice, or forwarded mashup of cute babies in vegetable costumes from mom.
4. It reminds us that Google is a real non-diety company that can have some problems now and then.
5. Your pets and children have one less reason to hate you today. Spend a few moments talking or playing with them.
6. Instagram is no longer trending.
7. "Oh you wanted the logo bigger? I'm sorry I must have missed that email...gmail was down all Tuesday evening..."

"There’s a common misconception that work is necessary. You will meet people working at miserable jobs. They tell you they are “making a living”. No, they’re not. They’re dying, frittering away their fast-extinguishing lives doing things which are, at best, meaningless and, at worst, harmful. People will tell you that work ennobles you, that work lends you a certain dignity. Work makes you free. The slogan “Arbeit macht frei” was placed at the entrances to a number of Nazi concentration camps. Utter nonsense. Do not waste the vast majority of your life doing something you hate so that you can spend the small remainder sliver of your life in modest comfort. You may never reach that end anyway."

Seeing Miles Davis play a tiny club in New York is on the top of my list of things to do as soon as I save up enough money to buy a time machine.
