Jeff Smith61,987Welcome to The Selfy Sunday Project for September 7/13. *Theme* for this week is: *Connections* As always it is up for interpretation. Personal connections, connections to friends and family, connections to your passions or your surroundings. Perhaps making or breaking connections. I really means many things to many people so have fun. Please take some inspiration from +Jake Johnson  who has graciously let us use one of his fantastic selfies as our event cover photo. Everyone is looking forward to some great selfies, have fun. Ideen? Weitere Vorschläge für lohnende Locations?Photowalk Stuttgart2013-01-12 11:00:0032

three village men
jhunjhunu, rajasthan, india

it's a common phenomenon in india that the people who are with almost no exceptions honestly friendly, welcoming and most willing to be photographed turn to frozen statues when they look into a lens. my assumption is that the experience with portrait photography for most indians, especially the uneducated (who are the large majority), come from pictures taken in the colonial era, when large format cameras with long exposure times were common and therefore the subjects needed to stop moving for quite a while, which made them appear very serious and starched. old photographs can be seen in almost every fort, palace and temple that basically are very frequently visited by natives. for us the portraits you get look a little weird and it takes a while to get used to, but at the same time tell a lot about indian history, culture and... more »

mogul time

pointing on all the small monuments, buildings, ruins and other stone relics that fly by constantly when riding cross country rajasthan our driver replied when we asked "what is this?" "mogul time".

in a very small village we came through this turned out a small well you can find all over the place more or less well conserved from the 16th century when the moguls ruled the region and shaped the look of rajasthan like no other period in time.

do you ask for water, sweety?

the minox 35 is an amazing very little camera. if it works. it's hard to find a perfectly working one even though most you find are in almost mint condition on the surface. they have plenty of kinks connected to the electronic shutter. but if they work well, they expose rightly, the lens is pretty sharp and it's easy to handle. a camera for the pants pocket. it's the smallest analog point-and-shoot camera ever built. if you find a good one, keep it!

the trickyness of auto focus

i hardly can remember when i used a camera with autofocus AND automatic exposure. and never had this opportunity with a medium format camera. but here it is, the fuji ga 645, 60mm f4.0, the world's first auto focus medium format camera. the first test roll i shot on a nice walk around neighbourhood and took a few nice catches under different circumstances. BUT i forgot to take the lens cap off! facepalm i am not used to shoot with range finder cameras since i normally use waist level finders like bronica, rolleiflex, minolta atocord, mamiya c330 etc. i have several point and shoot 35mm cameras of course, but as i realized now they all have no lens cap. i felt like a stupid leica user the first time (and the last i hope).

the trickyness of auto focus

i hardly can remember when i used a camera with autofocus AND automatic exposure. and never had this opportunity with a medium format camera. but here it is, the fuji ga 645, 60mm f4.0, the world's first auto focus medium format camera. the first test roll i shot on a nice walk around neighbourhood and took a few nice catches under different circumstances. BUT i forgot to take the lens cap off! facepalm i am not used to shoot with range finder cameras since i normally use waist level finders like bronica, rolleiflex, minolta atocord, mamiya c330 etc. i have several point and shoot 35mm cameras of course, but as i realized now they all have no lens cap. i felt like a stupid leica user the first time (and the last i hope).

the next test roll i shot with no lens cap i shot at home with an iso 100 film (fuji neopan acros). so the light was not ideal with very bright spots near the windows and very dark spots in other places the auto focus had some difficulties to work pretty well, while the exposure metering was perfect in each frame. the other trickyness for somebody like me who is used to slr waist level mf cameras is that you need to check the data written in the finder instead of the finder picture, which says exactly NOTHING. it is of course just a look-through glass, which is quite disturbing in the first place. a few shots i just forgot to check the data and so ignored the flashing 0.7m data, which means that i was too close to my subject. another facepalm. well, i really need to practise that more. but, normally i don't come that close to a subject, especially when travelling and shooting portraits, landscape, cityscapes etc. so, i think this won't happen very often and as soon as i got used to the very different shooting process compared to the other mf devices i use frequently this camera would be an awesome travel companion.

my conclusion is that the fuji ga645 is an awesome medium format travel camera and this is what it was made for. the abilities for indoor shootings are limited (despite the in-built flash i haven't tested so far), but if the light is good to medium, no reflections (like mirror or glass) and the 0.7m is not flashing it works great. and if it's sharp it's sharp! it is light (oh, so light, omy, so very light) and small and compact, very quick in loading and unloading film, auto focus and auto exposure make the shooting faster than ever before and my phone redundant for exposure metering. the handling is very intuitive (except that you must shoot landscape mode with the handle on the bottom. but this has to be to prevent casting shadow on the auto focus sensor by the lens hood) and self declaring.

i probably will take this camera to india this summer. can't wait to shoot this camera with color film!

mysterious performance

kids performing something in zurich's main station. there was no music, as far as i remember. the kids had headphones on and received instruction from somebody invisible to move synchronically, bowing forward, lifting their chairs, make a pose, folding arms, shake hips etc. they were very serious doing this and it was fascinating watching them. it is incredible how children are impressible for commands like this, but wait until you ask them to tidy up their room or make their home work for school.
