(From A Long Way by John Linney)

Yesterday I had planned to shoot Brimham Rocks during sunrise, but was a bit late getting out of bed.  I'm happy with that. The journey gave me this view, which I would otherwise have missed - taken a few minutes out of Otley ,Yorkshire UK.

I shared this on a community site yesterday - but as I understand it, I need to do a regular post for those who follow me (and are not in that community) to see it. If I'm wrong, I apologize ;-) - - - - - - - - -

1.5 million bricks laid in a specific way - forming Ribblehead Viaduct (Yorkshire, UK), built in 1870 - 1874. This fascinating structure, made up of 24 arches and spanning 400 metres, cuts through the landscape in a most beautiful way.

I've got nothing more to say on the subject - hope you're all having a good day ;-) - - - -

Common Frog - Rana temporaria

I walked past a frog pond (Chevin Woods) earlier today - and things were pretty hectic! Dozens of frogs, all at it - and the sounds were quite.... disturbing. I'll just leave you a short description from Wikipedia, which explains what I was looking at ;-)

"The females are attracted to the males that produce the loudest and longest calls and enter the water where the males mill around and try to grasp them with their front legs — although they may grasp anything of a similar size, such as a piece of wood. The successful male climbs on the back of the female and grasps her under the forelegs with his nuptial pads, in a position known as amplexus, and kicks away any other males that try to grasp her."

Another local tree - I've photographed this one so many times I'll probably end up buying a dedicated hard drive for it! I'm after a specific look in black & white - but thus far either the tree, the conditions or my equipment have let me down [whistles innocently as he turns away from the mirror].

This shot, however, has nothing to do with the aforementioned quest - it's a shot I took last week, whilst my daughter was walking the dog and me.

A tree I've walked past a thousand times - and never shown any interest in.

Until "the assistant" posed next to it, begging me to take a picture.

Or maybe it was the light that day - and Castro (seeing me point my camera at something) just had to get in there. He's irritating in that way.

A Moment Missed

The first light of day, falling on a bench on Saltburn-by-the-Sea pier.

I had to look at the RAW earlier to figure out why "the shadow" was underneath the bench. This happens when you edit into B&W and then leave the shot for too long. Turns out it's just discolouration and mould!

Hope you are having an entertaining (or relaxing) Saturday evening ;-) - - - - - - - - - -

Cluster of Hope

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
(Dylan Thomas)

The local church - built in the mid 13th centry, except for the tower (14th century) and - nave, chancel, north aisle and vestries which were added in 1910. From this angle, the church may look like a strange concoction of buildings, but I find it fascinating.
The mausoleum/grave in the foreground, belongs to Joseph Padgett of Tranfield Lodge - I've not found any information on him, but it seems like he was an important person.

As an atheist I do not frequent the church, but one day I'd like to spend a day there, inside, with my camera.

IN MEMORIAM II

As can be seen in this image, the largest branch of the tree, has broken off (see last post for comparison). I'm hoping this is due to nature, not man - as I can accept the former, not the latter.

Now, I realise the tree is still beautiful, albeit different - but the large arm provided such a unique, fascinating mood - a mood I always saw as despair, for some reason - that it will take me a long time to accept the change.

Still - who knows?  It might grow in a different way and become more beautiful than ever. In fact - it's incredibly selfish of me even to worry about how it will look.

Anyway - the day I discovered what had happened, I was there with my two daughters. It was a beautiful day - blue sky, green fields and sunshine. As far away from the mood I was after for this shot, as possible.

IN MEMORIAM I

When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
(From "When Great Trees Fall" by Maya Angelou)

Today I'm doing a two part sequel, in memory of this great tree. It's going to be like one of those "you won't believe what happened next" videos on Facebook, where something remarkable is accidentally filmed (from four different angles, with a professional light crew on set).

Anyway.

I may jest, but what happened to this tree made me realize that people can actually feel a sense of loss - even grief - when these delicate beings are maimed or killed. Maybe I'm just getting old.

There was nice movement in the sky this morning, but rather cold outside and my central heating was ticking away nicely. So I dismissed nature and shot a long exposure from the attic window.

So.... I sat down in front of the computer and discovered my last post has received a lot more pluses than usual - luckily the webcam was running to capture my reaction......

(Joke)

I would like to make two things clear, though:

1) I'm very grateful for the pluses, but for anyone following me due to that picture - you will be disappointed. Run while you can. It's not typical for me - and sun shots are not my forte (even though I am training myself to take more such shots).

2) My bum is definitely not as big as it seems in this picture. It's lens distortion. Or something.

(the shot is something I made for a scavenger hunt, about a year ago, but decided not to use)

A few mushrooms found in the woods above town, last autumn. I've only seen this "grey version" there - and not in any other woods in the area. That might just be me, though - as they are, as I understand it, fairly common.
I suck at identification... but I think these are Oudemansiella mucida or Porcelain Fungus. If I'm completely wrong, feel free to tell me off :-)

Shot with my old, but fairly decent, Miranda 28mm.

Unfinished Symphony

Deciding which one of my albums I want to post to - and which tags to attach to the post, is all the decision making I can handle for one image. Therefore, I'll repeat what I've written before: I don't get communities or the purpose of that feature.

For instance - and I'm asking with utmost respect - how is it beneficial to me or the viewer, if I post this in the B&W Fine Art community? How is it better than a tag? (again - asking because I don't get it - I'm not trying to be arrogant).

(as some of you may know - I can't thank people in the same way in the comments, unless I've used three different way to say thank you in between - and I find it extremely difficult to post an image without moaning about something to do with (in no particular order) Google, Life or Photography :-D

Scared of letting too much time pass between posting pictures, as I know that will result in another year of limited activity, I've been scrambling desperately through my hard drive to find something I could edit fairly quickly.

I found a rock - and the editing took much longer than I hoped for :-)

Captured last spring (April, 2014). Looking through the shots during my first and only visit to Brimham Rocks, I feel a need to go back - as there are so many shots that are "almost there", but not quite (I'm not moaning about this shot, mind you - I like this one)

It only takes about 30 minutes to drive, so no excuse.  Actually, I might even wake up really, really early in the morning and get some..........nah....... let's not get carried away! :-D

I recently deleted my Smugmug account and started looking at options like Wordpress, Joomla, Koken and such. The website is far from ready, and I may actually change systems tomorrow - who knows? But here are my first thoughts on the Koken system, which I went with after some research.

After receiving the same colour print from two places, I don't trust my monitor. The prints don't look anything like what I see on the screen. I see colourful, bright images - but the prints are dark and closer to monochrome than colour. I think I may need to get myself one of those calibrator things for the monitor.... if only for my own peace of mind.

I took this shot yesterday morning, after dropping the teenager off at work. Shot with the MX-1, in square, with instagram in mind. It has colour in it - if you don't see it, blame my monitor :-D

Vacancy

Before yesterday, it had been months since I'd seen the ocean - but now I've gone to Saltburn by the Sea to capture some early morning shots (mostly of the pier).  It was a lovely morning - no sunrise to speak of, but now and again beautiful, soft light made it's way through the dark clouds and haunting mist.

Saltburn is only an hour and a half away , so I'll not let months pass before going there again! It's unforgivable, really, to have waited this long.

December 2014, walking on Baildon Moor, I noticed this couple make a brief stop.  The strong sun provided some wonderful silhouettes.

I took a few pictures, from afar (with a old classic 200mm prime lens) and I liked this one the best - it makes me wonder about the people, their story and what was said (or unsaid) a few seconds before the shot.  Is the gesture arrogant - and perhaps a shrug of resignation from the man?

I've no idea.

While I've "been off", I've not really been on a proper photography trip - but I've taken my camera out (almost) every time I leave the house.
This has left me with hundreds of brainless snaps and much less space on my hard drive.  Most of these are unusable, but in between there are shots which I quite like - like this one.

This was taken during one of those rare walks where I leave the dog at home and get some "me time" ;-)

I got an email the other day, stating I had won the Nik collection in +Colby Brown's holiday give away.  I'm well pleased with that (thank you so much, Colby!).
Too impatient to wait for the product key, I downloaded the trial version and I've been playing around with it.  Often, when I try out new things regarding editing I lose control, taste goes out the window and I take it way too far. This may well be one of those times - I can never judge it whilst it's happening :-)

In a few months I'll have calmed down, and may just re-edit this shot (because I do like it).  Until then - this is Castro, a few trees, some snow and a whole lot of vignetting :-D

It's been too long when you spend a minute trying to remember how to post here (the "Share what is new" box did not grab my attention).

During my break I've been sharing occasional snaps on Facebook, and now I can't remember what  I've shared and where. Very confusing ;-)

I think (hope) I haven't shared this one here - taken last summer/spring at Brimham Rocks, Yorkshire UK.

Now to figure out the tagging thing again.... using gplusthemes (.com) - if any / all themes have been cancelled, I apologize for the disturbance :-)

Yesterday I discovered that Castro might just be the worst possible companion, when shooting mushrooms.
Every time I lay down to take some shots, Castro thought there must be something extremely wonderful at that precise spot - and instantly he'd start sniffing the ground to find out what wonders I had discovered :-)

It has been hot and sunny for a few days, and it seems it might last.  Wonderful in many ways, but a blue sky is not what I like when in the mood to take pictures.  It gives me about an hour to shoot, just before sunset - and that's it (unless I wake up really, really early - which I'm not up for at the moment).

I took this at the Leeds / Liverpool Canal in Shipley, earlier this evening.

(I need to re-visit tags, themes and such.... so leaving it blank this time ;-)

Even though I've taken the camera out quite a lot during my months of "staying away from G-Plus" - I haven't really been doing any "real" photography.

Coming back is hard.  You feel like you need to post something magnificent.

I can't do that, as I've not been focusing on photography.

I can, however, post this shot of me and Castro in the woods, a couple of months ago :-)

Another one of my shots for the New Years Scavenger Hunt - this time for the theme "Careless".

And a quick reminder - the clock is ticking, the signup for the next Scavenger Hunt is in an hour or so.... you can view a countdown here, thanks to +Alan Bland ( http://tinyurl.com/puzboe2 ).

I've decided to sit this one out, as I'll not have enough time to complete the tasks in the way I'd want - but I highly recommend that you (yes, YOU!) give it a try - it is, to put it mildly, a wonderful, fun and (for some) dramatic experience ;-)

What is the Scavenger Hunt?  Well, to put it simply - it's an exciting photography game, open to anyone - where you are given 10 words and you must shoot 10 pictures (1 for each word) in a period of a few weeks.  Again - it's open for anyone, no matter what ability or experience!!

The pictures are then moved into 10 gigantic photo albums, where a few judges look over them and choose which they like best.  It's friendly, it's a game, it's fun!

The next sign up IS TODAY - just head over to +Chrysta Rae's page and you'll quickly find the information you need.
Chrysta is the heart and soul behind the project, and, as I can testify, an excellent psychologist as well if you get a bit overwhelmed........ (don't ask!)!!

If I've done this right - you can see all the categories for the hunt that has just finished (below) but only the honourable mentions and 1-3 place winners.

The reason I highlight that, is because all those beautiful winning shots used to scare the hell out of me in the past.  I thought the game must only be for advanced photographers or Photoshop nerds.  Not true.  There are all sorts of people, all sorts of abilities - and, as I soon learned, it's not about taking things too seriously, it's about having fun!!

To view all the albums in full, go to Chrysta's page and take your pick ;-)

My entry for the Embrace theme - New Years Scavenger Hunt.

We're on the last day of the New Year Scavenger Hunt reveals - so far, 9 categories/themes have been judged and revealed.

I'll say this only once (then a few times after that!), you should really try to get yourself on the next scavenger hunt - it is, to put it mildly, a wonderful, fun and (for some) dramatic experience ;-)

It's friendly, it's a game,it&... more »

The next sign up date is FRIDAY, MARCH 21 at 12 NOON - just head over to +Chrysta Rae's page and you'll quickly find the information you need (see direct link to announcement below).
Chrysta is the heart and soul behind the project, and, as I can testify, an excellent psychologist as well if you get a bit overwhelmed........ (don't ask!)!!

If I've done this right - you can see the 9 categories already judged and revealed below, but only the honourable mentions and 1-3 place winners.

Here's a link to Chrysta's announcement: http://tinyurl.com/p5rl8lh

We've had a winter without snow - and the past few days the sun has been shining, warming up hearts, minds and nature.
Such circumstances bring out the flower shooter in everyone - the urge to document all those little signs of life, popping up all around :-)  This one is from a short walk earlier today.

Hope your all having a beautiful day :-)

As it's been more than a month since my last public post, I just wanted to tell you I'm still here :-)

I've been busy lately and it looks like things will stay that way for quite a while.  I'm carving out a new path - a new direction.  Or..... as some people call it, filling in job applications :-)

So... in the next few weeks I'll be more active than I've been the last month.... but less active than before that :-)))

Unquenched Thirst - Gordale Scar, Yorkshire - UK.

There is a hidden message in every waterfall. It says, if you are flexible, falling will not hurt you!
- Mehmet Murat ildan

I climbed up to the "mouth" of Gordale Scar (upper) waterfall in an attempt to capture the middle rock and the tree, with the water.  It came out slightly surreal, as you see - but I'm happy with it.
The climb wasn't hard - but getting down, as always, was quite tricky.  I also discovered that you can get behind the waterfall - although most of the pictures I took there were a bit weird.

Divided we fall  - Yorkshire, UK.

I shouldn't really be posting anything at the moment - I should be out shooting for the Scavenger Hunt.  A few days to go and I'm all ideas - no action!
I may just fail miserably and send nothing..... which would be  a shame.

I photographed this farm early January - whilst on my way to Malham.  It may seem dark, but it's a whole lot lighter than when I first posted..... thanks to some excellent critique I received.

Have an excellent Monday guys - I'm off to think up some more ideas for the Scavenger Hunt :-)

There is something fishy going on!  In the few years we've lived in the area, we've had loads of spiders in the house, late September and early October.  After that, they're not to be seen until the summer.

This week, though, we've seen quite a few juicy ones - crawling around walls, as if looking for love.  I caught this one earlier today - and took a few snaps before releasing into nature (it's probably found it's way back by now!!)

Guys.... I'm so sorry for the complete lack of engagement lately - a thousand reasons, but no excuses :-)

This evening I've been trying to catch up in a community I participate in - I thought it would take a couple of hours.... but I've been there for five already and not even half-way through reading and commenting on images.  It's a learning community, so it's important that participants criticise and such - hence, I've had limited time for other stuff.

I did mention.... when they were bringing communities in, that it was the end of Google as we know it!!! (just saying!) :-)))

As punishment, I'll close the comment section on this one.  I've been a very naughty boy and I don't deserve your feedback!! :-)

Over the weekend I had a moment of clarity, during which I felt sure of what I wanted to do in regards to photography.  You could even say I found "my vision".

Don't congratulate me yet, though - as tends to happen with moments of clarity, this one came and went ;-)

Still, I'm not at square one any more - in fact, I feel like I've taken a major step forwards.  At the moment I'm way too self concious to go into details - I'll leave that for the learning community I'm participating in.

I do hope all of you had a great Monday - supposedly the most irritating day of the week :-)

Rubbish!! :-)))

Shot:  The cliffs at Thornwick Bay, Yorkshire UK.

Echo

I was off today, so Castro and I spent the whole day in the woods.

Castro established where other dogs had urinated, at what time and what they had for dinner this morning - I crawled in the undergrowth, trying out the macro features on the MX-1.

It's funny how using a different camera, robs me of all the (limited) knowledge I have of photography.  For instance, it wasn't until half-way through the woods, I remembered that you can actually zoom in macro mode...... and you don't have to keep the camera set on f1.8!

Eventually I'll buy a proper macro lens for the K-5, but the MX-1 is more than good enough to practice on, until that happens (first I need a zoom, a wide angle, a 50mm.... and, of course, the K-3 :-)))
