Astronomers Without Borders229,956Ron Garan, astronaut, while floating in space, recalls looking back at our blue dot and marvelling at the beauty of our Earth. With our shrinking borders and increased technologies, why can't we collaborate globally? While on his stint on the International Space Station this former fighter pilot saw how fifteen nationalities worked together to put a few humans into a sustained environment in space. This is his Orbital Perspective. His newly released book explores how the notion of Orbital Perspective can work for us on Earth. Ron is joined by: Fellow astronaut and co-sponsor of the Ansari X-Prize for the first privately funded spacecraft, Anousheh Ansari. Author Frank White, whose Overview Effect (now in its third ediction) chronicled the life-changing experiences of our early astronauts in viewing the Earth from space, and whose Overview Institute is working to use that experience to better life on Earth. Mike Simmons, Founder and President of Astronomers Without Borders, which works to connect people and create collaboration based on our common heritage of the night sky. Join our discussion about how important it is use the Orbital Perspective here at home. Send questions ahead of time to info@astronomerswithoutborders.org or on the Google+ event page during the program. This week, we'll have special guest NASA Astronaut Ron Garan visit, to talk about his new book "The Orbital Perspective: Lessons in Seeing the Big Picture from a Journey of 71 Million Miles."Weekly Space Hangout - February 6, 20152015-02-06 21:00:0096
Astronomers Without Borders229,956Astronauts Ron Garan and Anousheh Ansari join us for this special AWB Hangout, "Astronomy In the Development of STEM Education". Though often neglected in traditional educational systems, astronomy is an ideal way to present science and other technical fields in schools. With limited resources, especially in developing countries, astronomy offers an accessible "laboratory" in a subject that already fascinates children. AWB's Telescopes to Tanzania is just one example of how astronomy is used to promote science learning and curriculum-building in developing countries. This panel discussion will look at how astronomy has been used for development and the opportunities that remain. Guests: Ron Garan is a former astronaut, aquanaut, and test pilot who is also an entrepreneur. He has founded multiple companies and socially-focused organizations. His social media following of 3.6 million makes him one of Google Plus’ “Top 25 Followed”, and a Kred “Top 1% Influencer”. Anousheh Ansari was a co-sponsor of the $10 million Ansari X Prize for the first private launch of a reusable manned spacecraft, and the first female private space explorer. She is a serial entrepreneur and currently the chairman of Prodea Systems which she co-founded. Kevin Govender is the Director of the International Astronomical Union's Office of Astronomy for Development in South Africa, which was created to use astronomy to make the world a better place. Mponda Malozo is an environmentalist in Tanzania who also works with the educational system as a science consultant promotes astronomy through outreach activities. He is the Tanzania Coordinator of the Universe Awareness Foundation and a project manager for AWB's Telescopes to Tanzania.Astronomy For the Development of STEM Education2014-08-06 18:00:0090

NASA2,837,706Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008308

NASA2,837,706Fifty years ago, President John Kennedy challenged us to go to the moon within the decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.   As we remember Neil Armstrong this week – the man who, with a single step realized the hopes of a president, this nation and the world – we are recognizing the extraordinary achievements of the past five decades achieved by our nation's space agency and where the passion to explore will lead us in the future.   President Barack Obama has set NASA on course toward an asteroid and to send humans to Mars within the next two decades. This goal is not without notable challenges, but using the knowledge, expertise and American ingenuity that has been the trademark of NASA scientists and engineers for the last half-century, NASA continues to make possible that which is seemingly impossible.   At 3:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 12, NASA astronauts, scientists and engineers will hold a Google+ Hangout to talk about NASA's rich history of innovation and ingenuity and talk about NASA's future goals for scientific discovery and human spaceflight. During the event, we'll be joined by: - Dan Dumbacher, Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration Systems Development in NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. He is the former Director of Engineering at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Previously, he was the deputy director of safety and mission assurance at Marshall. - Ron Garan, astronaut who lived and worked aboard the International Space Station. He has been in space for 178 days and has conducted four spacewalks. - John Grunsfeld, Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. He is an astronaut and researcher in high energy astrophysics, cosmic ray physics, and in the emerging field of exoplanet studies. He was also the deputy director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, managing the science program for the Hubble Space Telescope and the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope. - Michael Lopez-Alegria, the President of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation. He is a former Naval Aviator and test pilot (Capt., U.S. Navy, Ret.), NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander. To join the event, visit http://plus.google.com/+NASA at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.   Ask your questions of the group in the comments below or using hashtag #askNASA :50 Years Later: NASA Discusses Using Innovation and Ingenuity to do Big Things2012-09-12 21:00:00653

"...and I think to myself what a wonderful world"

#OrbitalPerspective

"What A Wonderful World"

I see trees of green,
red roses too.
I see them bloom,
for me and you.
And I think to myself,
what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue,
And clouds of white.
The bright blessed day,
The dark sacred night.
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow,
So pretty in the sky.
Are also on the faces,
Of people going by,
I see friends shaking hands.
Saying, "How do you do?"
They're really saying,
"I love you".

I hear babies cry,
I watch them grow,
They'll learn much more,
Than I'll ever know.
And I think to myself, What a wonderful world... more »

"...and I think to myself what a wonderful world"

#OrbitalPerspective

"What A Wonderful World"

I see trees of green,
red roses too.
I see them bloom,
for me and you.
And I think to myself,
what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue,
And clouds of white.
The bright blessed day,
The dark sacred night.
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow,
So pretty in the sky.
Are also on the faces,
Of people going by,
I see friends shaking hands.
Saying, "How do you do?"
They're really saying,
"I love you".

I hear babies cry,
I watch them grow,
They'll learn much more,
Than I'll ever know.
And I think to myself, What a wonderful world... more »
