Swan rescue at Woods Mill nature reserve

Roger Musselle from Roger’s Wildlife Rescue answered an emergency call to attend the Sussex Wildlife Trust Woods Mill nature reserve this afternoon after a female mute swan became trapped in a drainage ditch. http://www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/2014/07/swan-rescue/ The swan was safely released back onto the pond.

A massive thank you to Roger for all his good work. Please visit his website to find out more: http://www.rogerswildliferescue.co.uk/

Help us to act now by vaccinating badgers against bovine TB
http://www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/badgerappeal

Did you know that a large area of the South Downs between Brighton and Eastbourne is a bovine TB High Risk Area? It is possible that the Government could sanction culling of badgers here in an official effort to control the disease.

We strongly believe that killing badgers is not the answer.

We want to vaccinate all the badgers on our nature reserves in the high risk area, and adjoining land where possible. We’ll never allow badger culling on our nature reserves, but vaccination may help control the spread of the disease, and that’s vital if we’re to continue to manage our nature reserves effectively.

Thank you for your support

National Poetry Day is the perfect excuse to enjoy Rudyard Kipling's 'Sussex' again

Sussex by Rudyard Kipling

God gave all men all earth to love,
But, since our hearts are small
Ordained for each one spot should prove
Beloved over all;
That, as He watched Creation’s birth,
So we, in godlike mood,
May of our love create our earth
And see that it is good.

So one shall Baltic pines content,
As one some Surrey glade,
Or one the palm-grove’s droned lament
Before Levuka’s Trade.
Each to his choice, and I rejoice
The lot has fallen to me
In a fair ground-in a fair ground —
Yea, Sussex by the sea!

No tender-hearted garden crowns,
No bosonied woods adorn

That, as He watched Creation’s birth,
So we, in godlike mood,
May of our love create our earth

Or one the palm-grove’s droned lament

Each to his choice, and I rejoice
The lot has fallen to me
In a fair ground-in a fair ground —
Yea, Sussex by the sea!

No tender-hearted garden crowns,
No bosonied woods adorn
Our blunt, bow-headed, whale-backed Downs,
But gnarled and writhen thorn —
Bare slopes where chasing shadows skim,
And, through the gaps revealed,
Belt upon belt, the wooded, dim,
Blue goodness of the Weald.

Clean of officious fence or hedge,
Half-wild and wholly tame,
The wise turf cloaks the white cliff-edge
As when the Romans came.
What sign of those that fought and died
At shift of sword and sword?
The barrow and the camp abide,
The sunlight and the sward.

Here leaps ashore the full Sou’west
All heavy-winged with brine,
Here lies above the folded crest
The Channel’s leaden line,
And here the sea-fogs lap and cling,
And here, each warning each,
The sheep-bells and the ship-bells ring
Along the hidden beach.

We have no waters to delight
Our broad and brookless vales —
Only the dewpond on the height
Unfed, that never fails —
Whereby no tattered herbage tells
Which way the season flies —
Only our close-bit thyme that smells
Like dawn in Paradise.

Here through the strong and shadeless days
The tinkling silence thrills;
Or little, lost, Down churches praise
The Lord who made the hills:
But here the Old Gods guard their round,
And, in her secret heart,
The heathen kingdom Wilfrid found
Dreams, as she dwells, apart.

Though all the rest were all my share,
With equal soul I’d see
Her nine-and-thirty sisters fair,
Yet none more fair than she.
Choose ye your need from Thames to Tweed,
And I will choose instead
Such lands as lie ‘twixt Rake and Rye,
Black Down and Beachy Head.

I will go out against the sun
Where the rolled scarp retires,
And the Long Man of Wilmington
Looks naked toward the shires;
And east till doubling Rother crawls
To find the fickle tide,
By dry and sea-forgotten walls,
Our ports of stranded pride.

I will go north about the shaws
And the deep ghylls that breed
Huge oaks and old, the which we hold
No more than Sussex weed;
Or south where windy Piddinghoe’s
Begilded dolphin veers,
And red beside wide-banked Ouse
Lie down our Sussex steers.

So to the land our hearts we give
Til the sure magic strike,
And Memory, Use, and Love make live
Us and our fields alike —
That deeper than our speech and thought,
Beyond our reason’s sway,
Clay of the pit whence we were wrought
Yearns to its fellow-clay.

God gives all men all earth to love,
But, since man’s heart is small,
Ordains for each one spot shall prove
Beloved over all.
Each to his choice, and I rejoice
The lot has fallen to me
In a fair ground-in a fair ground —
Yea, Sussex by the sea!

Do something Amazing for Sussex Wildlife

http://www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/2014/09/do-something-amazing-for-wildlife/

Gifts that are left in wills are an important source of income for us here at the Sussex Wildlife Trust as it helps us to take a long term approach to our planning and strategic investment. These important gifts help us to buy and protect important wildlife sites, manage our existing nature reserves and better connect them with the wider landscape, inspire young people to value the wonders of nature and to speak up for wildlife to minimise the effects of planning development on our natural heritage.

Meet The Birds of Prey - Crowdfunding Appeal Goes Live.
Meet the Birds of Prey is a project bringing nature to the young and old. Conservation via education.

My Birds of Prey IndieGoGo Project.
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/meet-the-birds-of-prey/x/8570082

I wish to start a new small business, with the potential to grow over time. Nature and wildlife is very important for our well-being but as we all know, it is constantly under threat. I want to bring wildlife to people that might otherwise not experience it.

Birds of Prey are not pets and because of that many people don't get the chance to be up close to Hawks, Owls and other truly wild Birds of Prey. I hope my project will educate, inform and above all else bring excitement through being up close to these wonderful animals.

Children and adults with learning difficulties can benefit from interaction with animals. Young people in particular can be given a real sense of trust and achievement from handling and eventually flying the birds. All under gentle supervision from myself at all times.

Likewise senior members of our local community can enjoy wildlife in the safety of their own environment. Schools are very much focused on conservation these days (our young children are always pointing out the bees and the dropped litter!). Birds of Prey can be used to keep that young interest strong, in balancing modern life with fragile nature.

All this can only be possible with a lot of hard work by myself and by support from you. I have created a list of the basic financial requirements for this project to begin; please make suggestions and get involved!

Rewards Offered.
I will offer rewards for all "funders". From personal thank you cards (with images of the actual Birds of Prey) to 1-on-1 hands on flying and Hawk handling sessions for the bigger funders. As this is a start-up business which can only go ahead once funding is complete I anticipate that rewards can be offered in mid 2015.

This time allows for training of the Birds of Prey, to ensure all equipment is safe. All insurance policies are in place. As soon as I have the Birds of Prey then any rewards that involve images/photos can begin to be processed. Your patience and support really is appreciated.

Photography Rewards.
Birds of Prey days are very popular with photographers. If you would like to pledge funds and discuss a tailor made event please do get in touch. I can attend a suitable venue of your choice and the birds can be flown and posed whilst you instruct a group of people how to best take shots of wildlife.

This could be an excellent way to promote your photography services and at the same time help my Crowdfunding project get off the ground.

The images of the owl used in this project are images I shot at a Birds of Prey experience day!

Please can I ask you to share this post to as many interested friends, colleagues and contacts as possible. Crowdfunding is a great way to support start-up businesses.

I apologise for sending notifications (if you have them turned on from me) but I really would welcome your support on this.

Many thanks, Malcolm

The old-school approach is to carry on regardless and hope we can wrestle just a bit more GDP growth out of a reluctant natural world. To read much in the press one could be forgiven for thinking that this is the only development model on offer. However, as David Attenborough said, "continued expansion in a finite world is only believed possible by madmen – and economists!"

Sussex Wildlife Trust is delighted at West Sussex County Council Planning Committee’s unanimous decision yesterday to reject the application by Celtique Energie for exploratory drilling near Wisborough Green. The proposed drilling site is adjacent to our Northup Copse ancient woodland Nature Reserve. However we have grave concerns that it was traffic issue that got the application turned down, with little or no value placed on the rare bat population.

Many of the local authorities in Sussex are currently producing Local Plans which lay out where development will go and what it will look like for the next 20 years or more. The Sussex Wildlife Trust passionately feels that the environment should not be seen as a barrier to development, but a priority for protection in local plans. After all if we don’t protect and enhance our natural capital, Sussex may not be a very nice place to live in 20 years time for people or wildlife.
