Tomorrow, on Feb. 25th there will be another round of protests against ACTA in Europe.
This time the protests seem to be focused mainly in Germany, some Scandinavia, Austria and central Europe.

Two forces make American laws too complex. One is hubris. Many lawmakers seem to believe that they can lay down rules to govern every eventuality. Examples range from the merely annoying (eg, a proposed code for nurseries in Colorado that specifies how many crayons each box must contain) to the delusional (eg, the conceit of Dodd-Frank that you can anticipate and ban every nasty trick financiers will dream up in the future). Far from preventing abuses, complexity creates loopholes that the shrewd can abuse with impunity.

EC Members just don't get it

This article by +glyn moody shows just how far the people making laws and international agreements for all of us are removed from reality. They cannot grasp the fact that tens of thousands can be against something they deem to be good. So they must be anarchists or whatever.

There are new protests planned for this weekend all over Europe, let's see if they still see it that way.

With all the attention on Canada's Bill C-30 (un) Lawful Access legislation, lest we forget that Bill C-11 copyright legislation, with restrictive digital locks provisions, is still being pushed forward.

While Bill C-30 treats all Canadians as criminals, Bill C-11 may make many Canadians criminals, should they pursue fair use of media with digital locks enabled - fair use is NOT pirating, but rather making a personal backup or converting formats to play on a different device (ie. Ripping a purchased DVD to play on a tablet or PC). If Bill C-11 passes with the current digital lock rules it will be illegal to circumvent digital locks even for personal use!

This is why we need a Free Internet (Rant, Manifest, whatever)

we, the users, need to be free from:

- fear that our every post and comment, usually made in a specific context, will be captured and incorrectly interpreted by some machine, algorithm, or human with an agenda

- worry that this incorrect interpretation will lead to unpredictable reprisals at some random point in the future - at borders, in other countries or in domestic life (applying for jobs, insurance, etc.)

- worries that our every digital expression will be spied on and kept indefinitely to be used in any way that various governments and/or corporate entities see fit

- thus becoming a hostage to any future entities with access to that data, whether it be a repressive government, a corporate cabal or just plain old evil people
