Wearing decorative objects is an almost universal human custom with very early examples existing in #IceAgeArt. Amongst other things, jewellery can communicate information about personal identity, belief and social status.
See these mammoth ivory beads that are at least 26,000 years old in the #IceAgeArt exhibition, now open until 2 June 2013 http://ow.ly/kTJrt

We recently announced the major acquisition of a complete set of Picasso’s Vollard Suite, which will go on display next year from 3 May to 2 September 2012. The suite comprises 100 etchings produced by Picasso between 1930 and 1937 and is the only complete Suite held by a public museum in the UK. Some of the themes explored in the etchings are classical sculpture and the myth of the Minotaur (the half-man, half-animal of classical myth which became central to Picasso’s personal mythology). His model was his young lover Marie-Thérèse Walter who also features in many of the etchings. The acquisition was made possible through the generosity of the Hamish Parker Charitable Trust in memory of the donor’s father, Major Horace Parker.
