Beautifully engineered, but way too flashy. A wolf in wolf's clothing.

It is actually an old railroad tunnel that went out of use. Going through it makes you feel like you are entering a time frame that does not belong to either end of the tunnel.

1981 Jeep Wagoneer*. Once after curfew, I tried to kill the engine and coast downhill and turn left into the driveway with the lights off, undetected. Instead I rolled to a stop in the neighbor's yard. Learned that power steering requires a running engine. #myfirstwheels
* This picture is the 1989 model, but the wheel of innovation was measured in decades during the 80's. It looks pretty much identical to ours.

Google announces Google+ Sign-In.
Google just announced a new service where app and web developers can use Google+ as the sign-in for their offerings.
It explicitly rejects "frictionless" sharing (a la Facebook), whereby after you "consume" some kind of content the details of that action automatically spam your social network without your explicit permission.
The service also introduces a new kind of Google+ post. When something is shared from an app using Google+ Sign-In, your circles can interact with that post in ways that are specific to the app (we'll see what's possible on this when apps start using it.)

I finally got access to my Twitter archive [1]. I've been using Twitter since 2006 — and it's amusing to go back and see how inane my updates were back then. Seems like I mostly complained and made coffee. But, there's also a curious kind of earnestness and optimism about my tone; snarky, for sure, but also interested in everything going on in those earlier, heady days of the social web. I mean, none of us knew that Twitter would turn into a global phenomenon, but we had sense that there was something enduring about its ability to capture little human vignettes in a starkly simple medium.
Anyway, looking back over my archive, there was one tweet [2] on August 23, 2007 that was different than the rest — and yet looking over the month-to-month visualization Twitter provided, you'd never be able to spot this needle in the haystack of my 16,072 tweets:

Scrupulously reported and suspensfully told. There is no reference to the gun debate in the article, but the costs of easy access to firearms rings through.
What also rings through is an urgent need for public service professions like policing to develop forensic psychology capabilities. This would enable them do a better job predicting the risk someone's doing Amy Bishop scale wickedness in future.
Well worth reading.

Your brains will atrophy - And it's not the first time.
As we were reminded by Seamus Heaney in today's Times, quoting a story told by Socrates:
'It was Thoth who invented letters, I think. And Thoth goes to the big man, Thamus, and says: "I've got this terrific invention. It will help people enormously." But Thamus says, "No no no that doesn't help at all. They will forget everything; it won't belong in their memories." And that's the revolution we're in now, again.'
As with letters, so with calculators, and the internet, and Google, and all those other aids to cheating. It'll all end in tears. Socrates said so. And Seamus reminded us.

Excellent argument about why putting your business processes in the cloud by my ex colleague +Dave Girouard is clearly the safer choice. He lays out the folly of trying to run a technology company (i.e. your IT department) while you're trying to run a completely different business. Others do it better, cheaper and more reliably now.

If you're sick, or feeling slightly sick, you should go home and rest. And not infect everyone else. Especially if you live in the United States.
No really.
Look at this picture. It shows the current Google Flu Trends [1].
The redder it gets, the more intense the flu activity.
Clearly there's a bunch of sickos out there making everyone else sick too! Do everyone a favor and self-quarantine!
(But, if you are feeling sick — that does suck and I hope you feel better and get healthy soon! Don't forget to drink lots of water and get plenty of rest!)

Just by watching a videotape of a couple in the first few moments of a conversation about an area of marital contention, Gottman can predict with 94 percent accuracy which couples will later divorce.
In describing and quantifying the positive and negative forces on relationships, Gottman has found that a heavily weighted factor is whether one partner will accept influence from the other.
Fascinating!

Very nice to see some thoughtful analysis of what we're doing here from investor and fellow MIT alum +Brad Feld. As far as "Brilliant", well... awww shucks, we're blushing. But it's nice to see someone noticing how the pieces are coming together over time. Thanks +Brad Feld!
As far as the identity issues, yes indeed, we have lots of work to do... We at Google typically juggle across multiple accounts, and feel this pain acutely ourselves. The problems are harder than they seem, and apologies if we led you (or others) to believe we'd have them fixed sooner than we were able to... We continue to make progress here, and continue to think about remedies and ways to move forward.

Hey +Timehop, I like your service, but now I'm angry.
Your new "note to future me" feature caused me to post a message to Facebook that I thought would be visible to FUTURE ME only.
Looking at it now, I see the references to Facebook, but I'm so used to your "Proactive share only," model that I didn't notice what was actually happening in this flow.
Further, time capsules IRL are invisible until they're dug up in the future. You say, "You should leave a time capsule for future-you," not "future-my-500+-friends on Facebook."
Not cool at all. The only place a user should be able to share something is from your sharing task flow. You should not be a Facebook front-end in any other way.
I'm glad I didn't share something more personal than I did.

The Ktrak is a patented wheel system that turns a mountain bike into a pedal-powered snow machine and all terrain vehicle. Created by Kyle Reeves, the biking innovation is a kit that can attach to the rear of any mountain bike. It creates traction on previously ‘unridable’ surfaces such as snow or sand, turning your bike into a snow or sand plough.

I admit it: one of my secret fantasies I've been harboring for over a decade has been to be featured in the Sunday Styles section of the New York Times; my guilty secret is that it's one of my favorite sections in all of journalism.
Well friends, today that fantasy has arrived!
The trend of "young entrepreneur dropouts" has been officially stamped as "approved" by the trend-hunting Sunday Styles section of the NYT- and I'm a source in the story, with a couple of choice quotes and commentaries.
Check out this great article by the venerable Alex Williams, called "Saying No To College" here: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/02/fashion/saying-no-to-college.html
The print version comes out tomorrow. Also featured are +Dale J. Stephens and +Blake Boles (Zero Tuition College).
The revolution continues...

The Most Popular Freelancer Apps for Work-Life Balance
The title intrigued me, so I checked out the article. An interesting but unsubstantiated fact (what, hyperlinked sources are hard to do?) is that there are 42 million freelancers in the U.S. Since the adult working population is about 155 million (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm), that would mean more than 1 in 4 working-age adults is a freelancer - which sounds rather high.
Ignoring the statistics for a moment, the "work-life balance" context sounded interesting. And in fact there are many great productivity apps here, many of which probably do help freelancers. But work-life balance? Sorry, these are just apps that help us work smarter, or more efficiently: They don't help us manage the balance in our lives better. That's one of the things my team at eParachute is working on.

Nice short video documentary about competitive kiteboarding. I'd like to try kiteboarding sometime. There's a crazy shot of a guy hopping over Brighton pier on a kite.
