78 menu options?! :o
"Reporting a water leak to Lloyds TSB's home insurance department requires dialling a total of seven numbers, one at each stage of the call (1, 3, 2, 1, 1, 5, 4), and it takes more than four minutes to navigate the 78 menu options, according to the website."

Looking forward to this. In the meantime, here's a bit from the first book that cracked me up:

Companies like Amazon and Starbucks just take advantage of tax loopholes. It's not right, but it's legal. They'll get away with it anyway. Our governments really need to get their acts together. Don't hate the player, hate the system.

Sounds impressive but when will they be ready?
"The speed tests are also not quite fair, because generic computers will always perform less well than a device dedicated to solving a specific problem, says McGeoch. "A next step would be to build a conventional processor optimised for this task, for a fairer comparison," says O'Brien."

What with all the chatter about the 3.9 kernel and a poorly 11 month old sitting on my knee watching nursery rhymes on youtube, decided to compile and install it... Yeah, I was a bit bored.

My buddy +Kim Beasley shared this on Facebook, and it is waaay too hilarious to not share with you all. I don't know how court reporters manage to maintain their bearing when things like this are happening in the courtroom, but there's no way I could do it.
----------------------------------------------
HOW DO COURT RECORDERS KEEP STRAIGHT FACES????
These are from a book called Disorder in the American Courts and are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and published by court reporters that had the torment of staying calm while the exchanges were taking place.
ATTORNEY: What was the first thing your husband said to you that morning?
WITNESS: He said, 'Where am I, Cathy?'
ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you?
WITNESS: My name is Susan!

"...Go ahead and make something for the elites. Not the elites of class or wealth, but the elites of curiosity, passion and taste. Every great thing ever created was created by and for this group.
There's a surprisingly large amount of room at the this end of the market--among those that care enough about what they do to say no, and better yet, to teach the market why they're right.
They earn their niche at the top of the market by leading, not pandering."

If he says it's a sport...
Q: You are a national wushu champion, so what is your view on virtual gaming being coined as a sport as well?
A: If poker card games and chess both have the players sitting down and are considered sports, why not virtual gaming as well? There are 2 kinds of sports, 1 physical and 1 mental. There is no good reason to debunk virtual gaming as a sport, and I believe the participants of such virtual PvP events have the same mentality as physical athletes.

Be careful to double check before flashing!
"Recently, news went around the internet that the new darling of the mobile world, the Samsung Galaxy S 4, had been rooted prior to its release. Generally that is great news, but in this case the person who did the “rooting” didn’t have the device to test the process. In many cases, like previous versions of the Galaxy series, that is OK because the way to root Samsung devices has been the same via repacking Samsung’s firmware package with su and then flashing via ODIN. While that old way worked, it doesn’t work on the new S4 as XDA Recognized Developer Odia proved in a thread similar to the original “root” thread"

"As Sherlock fans digest the news that there will be a fourth series of the BBC1 detective drama, the show's star Benedict Cumberbatch has whetted appetites further ahead of series three, which begins filming next week."
" You are in for an absolute stonker. It's going to be a treat, said Cumberbatch, when asked about yesterday's initial read-through rehearsal for the first episode of the new series, which will finally explain how the detective survived his fall from the roof of St Bart's Hospital..."

Time Machine backups to a NAS with Samba shares doesn't seem to work as it used to since Lion. The old trick of simply setting "TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes" and using a sparsebundle throws up an error of "Incompatible file system type: smbfs (error 45)"
Rummaging around, I found some useful info on the MacRumours forums:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1511597
It looks like I have to mount the sparsebundle as a disk image in ML and then manually tell Time Machine to use it for backup. Also, I needed to make sure this was mounted whenever backups were done...
My NAS is already mounted in ML whenever I boot up so that wasn't a problem. To do the same thing with the sparsebundle, a simple script which was then added to my login items gets the job done.
All in all, it ain't pretty but it works! When I have ... more »

Some profile & page improvements, per your request
We spend lots of time listening to your feedback, and today we're launching some profile and page updates that you've been asking for. These include:
- A new tab for your Local reviews. In addition to your photos, +1's and YouTube videos, there's now a place for all your Local reviews. Highlight your favorite restaurants, or hide the tab completely via settings -- it's completely up to you.
- An easier way to edit your info. The 'About' tab now consists of separate cards (like Story, Places, and Links) -- each with its own prominent edit link. As always: you can share specific fields with specific circles, or keep them just for you.
- Bigger cover photos, with a better aspect ratio. Cover photos are much larger than before (up to 2120px by 1192px), and they display in 16x9... more »

Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810 & multi-booting
I realised, with my recent desktop build, there was another thing I needed that I had not really thought about and that was a keyboard.
Being mainly a laptop user for the last 5 years or so, the choice of keyboard was mainly driven by the laptop itself. I do have a few cheap usb/ps2 keyboards lying around for the occasional server & miscellaneous use but nothing I would like to use for long periods at a time.
Initially, my search led me to the Apple wireless keyboard. Its compact size, wireless and good typing experience ticked all the right boxes. Also, it would be awesome to use with my hackintosh. However, my desktop only part-times as a hackintosh as I multi-boot and I would also feel obliged to purchase an Apple mouse to compliment it.
So, off I went again in search which eventually... more »

Budget Korean 27" IPS 2560x1440 monitor & ubuntu
As part of my recent desktop build I really needed a decent monitor as I suspected my current unused 8+ years old 17" wouldn't cut it anymore. Googling brought these budget Korean IPS monitors to my attention. It seems that these have been quite popular on eBay for their LG 27" 2560x1440 resolution panels at very affordable prices. I'm not going to go into specifics but you can read up on them over here:
