cloud atlas

just finished reading the book and then watched the film right after. the book was good until it wasn't (roughly 2/3 through, basically once the sonmi story wrapped; literary history's longest-ever denouement). the stitching back had no payoff. the film was terrible. if you didn't read the book it would make little sense. if you did read the book you'd realize that the book and the film are as related as baseball is to cricket--bats, balls, dudes running around. acting also awful. train wreck. #plotsploitation

down on the island today (alameda), instead of over at ocean beach. for non-locals, all this means is that i was within the bounds of san francisco bay, rather than out on the pacific. for me it just meant no waves, a bit stinkier, but still plenty o' wiiiiiind.

this shot is another attempt at humble homage to +Suzanne Levine's delightful landscapes.

get thee back to hay-ell

so i'm standing in the kitchen when freakin' mothra decides to smack into the window. blammo! god bless you romans, for inventing glass windows, because this dude was on a mission to get at my fake moon. huge, and moving very rapidly. it looked like a hummingbird. so i grabbed my camera, knowing he was moving wayyy too fast. eventually he settled up under the rafters. then all i had to do was coax my stupid nikon into dealing with the very sub-optimal conditions. you should've seen me messing with flash, and flashlights, and settings, and leaning out windows.

i think it's a hyles lineata aka white-lined sphinx (which incidentally some sources are calling a hummingbird moth, but i'm not convinced that's correct).

boom

nice when a vague idea creeps in, ferments, and then comes together the way you imagined it.

steamed asparagus, sugar snap peas, and zucchini (which i threw in later than the first two, damn i'm smart), then ice bath. dressing of olive oil, apple cider vinegar (bragg ftw!), hing (also called asafoetida; it's a substitute for garlic and has a nice pungency to it), honey, thyme, basil, ground coriander, salt. some canned tuna, and a bit of veganaise (vegan mayo; inb4 you tell me tuna isn't vegan). topped with farmer's market local olives.

just the way i wanted it.

looking at the picture, the olives look a bit like almonds, which would've been great too.

(i'm actually shilling for free, but there's a germanic connection--stick with me.)

my good friend +Mark Harrison, who i know from my time in berlin, is launching a new peer-to-peer boat rental business in fort lauderdale, florida, called cruzin.com, basically the boat analog of the p2p car and housing rental gigs. so if you're in berlin, it's cold, snowy and your boat options are like this dredging barge i shot below. but if you're in south florida (or likely lots of other places once the pilot program is established), and you want to rent a sweet yacht for the day, then check out cruzin.com, and "getcho boat on, fool." not even the bare minimum

while heading into berkeley yesterday, i was driving behind a woman smoking a cigarette. the nerve calming effects apparently weren't working, as she couldn't stop fidgeting with it--flicking flicking flicking flicking the ashes--which is partly why i noticed at all. i then noticed a sticker on the rear window that said IAFF. it looked familiar. i got close enough to see that it was the logo for the international association of fire fighters.

launch!

yep, there goes the still burning cigarette, right out the window. you're already a huge loser for littering, but you've got a fire fighter sticker on your window too?! and just to tie it all neatly together, said launch occurred on tunnel road, which is right where the 1991 firestorm took place (25 lives, 3300 homes, $1.5 billion). i placed a large blue "X" on... more »

stitches

i've recently been described here as a connector. thank you to those who have said so. it's nice to be seen. i do feel at home when i'm synthesizing ideas. oftentimes i see larger arcs coming together, but sometimes it's nice simply to have a loose thread come back around and be integrated.

the image below is from october when i was playing around with my emerging steel concept. (http://bit.ly/15vSeCx) i wondered at the time what the red wildflower was (i pretty much call every red, spiky wildflower indian paintbrush, knowing full well what that one actually looks like). today, when i was at the native plant show, i was looking at seeds and saw an image of mimulus cardinalis. i thought, hmm, maybe that's what i saw back in october, especially given how much mimulus aurantiacus there is around here. but i didn't think much more of it.

teaching a stone to talk
for +Detlef Cordes +Shell Rummel +Suzanne Levine (and the rest of you that rock)

i found this small rock over ten years ago, on the north-eastern shore of lake tahoe. i was drawn to it because its shape speaks of its history, each step of formation and reformation. i keep it and love it because having it speaks of where our histories intersected.

last week i was house-sitting for a couple who are family friends. the man was a colleague of my father, before i was even born. (i just learned a story that he was being mistakenly congratulated at the seminary for the birth of his son the day i was born--our family names rhyme.) she was off to illinois for the week, with the grandkids; he, sadly, has been confined by parkinsons and alzheimers (or just plain old, garden variety dementia?) to a nursing home for several years. so part of myres... more »

annie dillard says

“I am no scientist. I explore the neighborhood. An infant who has just learned to hold up his head has a frank and forthright way of gazing about him in bewilderment. He hasn’t the faintest clue where he is, and he aims to find out. In a couple of years, what he will have learned instead is how to fake it: he’ll have the cocksure air of a squatter who has come to feel he owns the place. Some unwonted, taught pride diverts us from our original intent, which is to explore the neighborhood, view the landscape, to discover at least where it is that we have been so startlingly set down, if we can’t learn why.”
