Induro Love.

The Induro blog covered our nature photography today!  Always fun to get a little exposure :).  We haven't been able to get out to do any photography recently with the newborn, but hopefully it won't be too long!

I really do recommend the Carbon CT series of tripods, they provide great stability and ease of use.

Where I've Been.

I have been missing from plus for a bit now and a couple of you have kindly inquired as to my whereabouts.  I wanted to share a quick post and photo providing that answer.  My wife and I had our first child recently and I have cut back on a few endeavors, including plus, to adjust for his arrival.  I do plan on returning as time permits, but for the time being my posting will be limited.  Thanks for understanding.

Standard genetic parts, graphene speaker, hair-thin endoscope, self assembling tissues, true nanocomposites, robotic cloud, and more.

1. A Precision Genetic Grammar for Engineering Cells.
A research group / company called BIOFAB has launched an online shop for a library of standard biological parts that it has created http://www.nature.com/news/dna-tool-kit-goes-live-online-1.12585. These standard biological parts - DNA sequences - allow precise control of gene activity in the bacterium Escherichia coli  and should allow biologists to design bigger and more complicated circuits and engineer cells that can make medicines and perform other useful tasks simply by plugging in various sets of genes. The sequences overcome a significant barrier in synthetic biology in which genes inserted into an organism often do not behave... more »

Lego Organs.
#ScienceEveryday (for when it’s not #ScienceSunday)

Organs and tissue are incredibly complex in terms of their cellular and material components.  An orchestra of cell signaling and material architecture is necessary to produce and maintain function of these complex tissues.  Therein lies one of the great challenges in tissue engineering and growing new organs.  How can we create these complex tissues in the lab?  A paper recently published in PNAS (http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/02/27/1300569110) may provide one key tool to help create these complex structures.

Legos – The concept has been around for a long time in the form of a favorite childhood toy of many.  The researchers at Columbia University have created very small building blocks of multiple shapes that allow complex components to be built up to help create complex organs.  Thekey here ... more »

Likes, Pluses, and Personal Privacy.
#ScienceEveryday (for when it's not #ScienceSunday )

An intriguing paper was recently published in PNAS (http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/03/06/1218772110.full.pdf+html) on the ability to predict personal and private traits from facebook likes.

A direct quote from the paper states "We show that a wide variety of people’s personal attributes, ranging from sexual orientation to intelligence, can be automatically and accurately inferred using their Facebook Likes."

It is important to note that the statistical techniques used are not particularly complex.  This makes similar methods fairly easy to employ if one has access to the data.  With more and more of our lives being made available online through our own actions on social media, this almost seems inevitable.

Will this cause you tocha... more »

Man has 75% of Skull Replaced!

Now this is just cool and amazing.  3D printing was used to replace 75% of a man’s skull!!

3D Printing - The technique used here was similar to a tissue engineering article I recently posted about (https://plus.google.com/u/0/114146479114949843175/posts/RvjmfiwN2or).  The patient had their head scanned and then that data used to produce a CAD (computer aided design) file.  This file was imported into a 3D printer, which then produced an implant layer-by-layer with the correct topology to match the patient’s skull!  This patient specific technology can dramatically improve implant fit and outcome.

PEKK  -  The material used for the printing was a thermoplastic, polyetherketoneketone (PEKK).  Thermoplastics are polymers that soften above a certain temperature but harden once cooled again.  This property allowsthis materi... more »

Mysterious Notochord
#Sciencesunday  (curated by +Allison Sekuler, +Rajini Rao, +Buddhini Samarasinghe, +Chad Haney, and myself (+Robby Bowles))

I’m sharing this beautiful image from a paper recently published in the Journal of Cell Biology (http://jcb.rupress.org/content/200/5/667) on the notochord and it’s role in spine morphogenesis.  Now you may be asking why this would be of interest to you.  The reason is simple, back pain is a huge problem, it dramatically reduces our quality of life and has huge societal costs.  The cells studied in this paper (notochordal cells) may be playing a significant role in the development of back pain.  Here is why.

The Intervertebal Disc - The intervertebral disc is a cartilaginous tissue found in your spine, which is believed to play a role in the development of back pain when injured or diseased.   Thisdisc is res... more »

(Mon06) Cassini spots Venus peaking through the rings of Saturn

Peering over the shoulder of giant Saturn, through its rings, and across interplanetary space, NASA's Cassini spacecraft spies the bright, cloudy terrestrial planet, Venus. The vast distance from Saturn means that Venus only shows up as a white dot, just above and to the right of the image center.

Venus, along with Mercury, Earth, and Mars, is one of the rocky 'terrestrial' planets in the solar system that orbit relatively close to the sun. Though Venus has an atmosphere of carbon dioxide that reaches nearly 900 degrees Fahrenheit (500 degrees Celsius) and a surface pressure 100 times that of Earth, it is considered a twin to our planet because of their similar size, mass, rocky composition and orbit. Venus is covered in thick sulfuric acid clouds, making it very bright.

Seeing Invisible Motion

This technology could be used for all sorts of things. The example they are using is to monitor a newborns pulse and respiration without actually needing to touch them or attach devices.

It's amazing what you can find by looking in plain sight! #sciencesunday

"A 30-second video of a newborn baby shows the infant silently snoozing in its crib, his breathing barely perceptible. But when the video is run through an algorithm that can amplify both movement and color, the baby’s face blinks crimson with each tiny heartbeat."

Researchers have created a new type of graphene transistor with a liquid gate, intended to power next-generation neural prostheses http://www.technologyreview.com/view/511141/graphene-and-the-emergingtechnology-of-neural-prostheses/. They believe graphene is ideal for this application because not only is it flexible and chemically stable, it can be used to make these novel transistors that are gated by the solution in which the transistor sits. The natural body fluids that surround these prostheses will form an integral part of their operation. Testing these graphene interfaces with various cells has also demonstrated that graphene... more »

Printing Ears.

Here is fun piece of science coming out of Cornell University from my former lab.  Dr. Larry Bonassar's lab has developed methods to 3D print and create patient specific tissue engineered implants.  High resolution 3D scanning technology was used to obtain the proper size and shape of the ear, and then a specially designed mold was rapidly prototyped, in which cell seeded gels could be injection molded and cultured to produce tissue-engineered constructs mimicking the shape of the "patient's" ear.  This research was published in the OPEN ACESS journal PlosOne and can be found here http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0056506

Additionally, this video demonstrates an additional technique to produce these ears that is not reported on in the published paper.  They demonstrate how they can directly print thecell s... more »

Coming to an NBA Player Near You: Tissue Engineering.

Microfracture Surgery has become a popular intervention for those suffering from articular cartilage defects.  Especially a number of NBA players including Andrew Bogut, Anfernee Hardaway, Jason Kidd, Greg Oden, Allan Houston, Kenyon Martin, Tracy McGrady, Chris Webber, and Amar'e Stoudemire.  The idea is to create tiny fractures in the subchondral bone, which allows blood and and stem cells to emerge and form a blood clot that can form new cartilage in the defect.  However, the cartilage formed is not always of the highest quality.

Researchers at John's Hopkin's have designed a novel hydrogel and adhesive that adheres to the bone and helps produce a better quality of cartilage in the defect than when traditional microfracture is performed.  This small trial in humans is promising and therese... more »

Who Cares About Orthopaedic Research?

The Orthopaedic Research Society just had their annual meeting, where thousands of scientists came together to discuss their research and progress towards developing new therapeutics.

Why should you care? - Did you know that greater than 50% of those over the age of 65 will show signs of arthritis and its associated pain?  Did you know that 65 million people in the US alone suffer from low pack pain annually?  These are just some of the diseases that affect the musculoskeletal system, but they can be debilitating and lower the quality of life of those suffering substantially.  It is almost guaranteed that you or someone you know will be afflicted by an orthopaedic disease.

By the Numbers - More than 1 in 4 in the US alone suffer from an orthopaedic disease that requires medical attention.  This leadsto direct an... more »

Conferences and Light

Just returned from the Orthopaedic Research Society Annual Meeting 2013!  I saw a ton of science from researchers advancing our understanding of orthopaedic disease and developing novel therapeutics to treat them.  I'm going to be sharing a few posts soon on some of the interesting work presented there.  For a scientist, these conferences can be a lot of fun and a lot of work.  You have the opportunity to talk about your research and novel insights with leaders in the field from around the world.  I'm always struck by how hard scientists are working to help humanity and make this world a better place. Go Science!

And on a completely unrelated note, here is a photo I took locally here in Durham, NC where I could not pass up photographing the light and patterns within this building.

Here is an incredible video of the recruitment of neutrophils to the site of laser damage!  This video was created using 2-photon microscopy, which I described in a previous +ScienceSunday post (https://plus.google.com/u/0/114146479114949843175/posts/MfY2S2KWSvN).

"This video shows the immune response in the lymph node of a mouse, when activated by a laser. Specifically, it shows an efficient innate immune reaction in the lymph node, which typically has been studied for the development of adaptive immune response."

This video took first place in the 2012 small world in motion competition.  Make sure to check all the other amazing videos at http://www.nikonsmallworld.com/galleries/swim/2012-small-world-in-motion-competition

Another World.

One of my favorite HDR shots from an Ice Cave in Alaska.  This is a 5 exposure shot on the Matanuska Glacier.  The HDR really brought out the variation in colors and detail into the back of the cave, which was pitch black.

You can check out this photo and many others from Alaska in my new book http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3805274 if you are so inclined.

Winter's Storm.

It has been awhile since I've shared a photograph to my experimental gallery.  It's always fun to experiment with new styles and subjects!  I went out in a snow storm just before Christmas to photograph some winter scenes.  I wanted to capture the feel of the overwhelming white during the storm, and played with overexposing the shot to white out almost everything.  It was fun to be out there and I'm pleased with how the shots turned out.

#PlusOneCollection2012

I thought I had the photo picked out when +Ivan Makarov announced the 2012 version of the  +Plus One Collection.  I loved being apart of last years book, with one of my favorite photos of all time (https://plus.google.com/photos/114146479114949843175/albums/5642585135703405697/5647029741235532626).  However, I went out to photograph one last time on the 28th of December and was able to photograph this Short-eared Owl in Canada on Amherst Island.  I'm excited to submit this photo to the book, and look forward to seeing all the beautiful photos contained within the book.

If you are interested in submitting a photo, make sure to check out +Ivan Makarov's post here https://plus.google.com/106711803105103787711/posts/h7A4z7eTdNz

Roaming the Fields.

My wife and I were able to take a trip to Ontario, Canada over Christmas vacation to do some photography.  We visited an island near Lake Ontario in some fairly cold weather, despite +Allison Sekuler telling me it was not cold there :).  We found this Short-eared Owl roaming a field just off the ferry landing.  We were able to watch the owl for about 15 minutes flying around the field before moving along.  I rarely get to see owls in the wild, so this was a treat.

Happy New Year: Photography Edition.

I had trouble deciding which photo to pick for my best of 2012, but decided this was my favorite for the year.  I loved the combination of the violence of the ocean with the lounging Steller Sea Lions.  Looking forward to many more adventures with wildlife in 2013!

I wish a happy a prosperous new year to all my plus friends!

Cells: Masters of Their Domain.
#ScienceSunday (curated by +Allison Sekuler, +Rajini Rao, +Chad Haney, and myself)

Cells are amazing, they help build, maintain, and provide the function to your organs and tissues.  However, sometimes it's difficult to visualize what type of impact they have on their environment.  In my field, tissue engineering, we try to harness their abilities to grow new tissues and organs to treat disease and injury.  During this process, we get to experience firsthand how they impact their environment.  I have provided a gif below that demonstrates the ability of cells to remodel their environment.

We have seeded the cells in a collagen gel.  The cells attach to this collagen and then begin pulling on the the collagen fibers, visualize the cells pulling on interconnected tiny ropes.  As the cells pull on these ropes, they begin to contractthe ge... more »

SciTech #ScienceSunday Digest - Week 51 of 2012
A Top 10 selection of the scientific and technological advances that I discovered this week.

1. Some Implications for Turning Genetics into an Information Science.
A large computational model of the cell has been assembled from the known networks of gene and protein interactions, and which has shed light on how genes and proteins connect to form high-level cellular machinery http://phys.org/news/2012-12-cell-genes.html (image #2). The ontology they have created specifies all of the major players in the cell and the relationships between them and so comprises a comprehensive catalogue of gene functions. This is created automatically from large genetic datasets and so new updates and additions to those datasets should automatically update and improve the model. We also have a group looking at the basis of life from its... more »

Touch.

There is just something different about touching a physical object, and this is even true with photographs.  I love viewing photos in my stream and on my computer monitor, but I love a good print or book.  I recently took the time to make a new book of my Alaska photography, and the proof finally came in last week!  It was a treat to actually be able to turn the pages and view each photo.  I even found myself staring at photos I hadn't paid much attention to in some time.  So if you haven't done so recently, get some of your photos printed out and hold them in your hand.  There is just something different about it.

Book Release!

I have been working on this book for sometime and I'm finally launching it today!  I'm very happy with how this book turned out and I think you will enjoy it as well.  Most importantly, I'm donating $5 to the +World Wildlife Fund for each book sold, because without our conservation of the environment and the precious wildlife on this planet, the scenes in this book do not exist.  This book is a journey through some of Alaska's iconic beauty and explores the mountains, glaciers, and wildlife from one of the most beautiful places on earth.  A place I have grown to love and I hope that comes through in the pictures contained in this book.

Multi-Photon Microsocpy.
#ScienceSunday (curated by +Chad Haney, +Allison Sekuler, +Rajini Rao, +Buddhini Samarasinghe, and myself)

I have shared a number of multiphoton microscopy images I have created during my research, but thought I would share a bit of information on how this microscopy technique functions.  Many of the colorful and high resolution photographs you see use either confocal or multi-photon microscopy.  They provide a plethora of scientific information, but are also great for science communication due to their eye catching aesthetics.

Where Was it Developed?

The technique was pioneered at Cornell University in the Watt Webb laboratory.  I have a special fondness for this fact because I did my Ph.D. at Cornell and worked with microscopes set up by this lab and his former students for my images.

How is it Accomplished?

 Resurrection Bay.

If you have never been to Seward, AK and gone out on Resurrection Bay, I highly recommend it.  The combination of the wildlife and sheer beauty is striking to say the least.  I have shared a number of photos from this area but wanted to share this one, which really represents the Bay to me.  You can see this scene over and over again as the land juts out into the bay, and the colors of the water are incredible.  Don't miss out on this trip if you are in Alaska!  If you want more photos from the Seward area, make sure to check out +Ron Niebrugge for some incredible Alaska photography.

Solitude.

There is just something about ice floating on the water that screams solitude to me.  I could sit back, watch, and contemplate life for many hours staring at these various forms.  And who can't help but see objects in the shapes of the ice.  What do you see here?

Science, It's That Awesome.
#ScienceSunday (curated by +Allison Sekuler +Rajini Rao +Buddhini Samarasinghe +Chad Haney, and myself)

"Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge" - Carl Sagan

I am lucky, I get to do science everyday.  There is nothing I would want to be doing more than what I do now.  I am constantly amazed by what I see and what I learn.  Even more astonishing is how much I don't know after all these years of studying.  The unknown, it excites me, leaves me with the same level of curiosity and wonderment as I had about the world when I started.

Even seemingly simple concepts, like the composition of a tissue are intriguing.  For example, below is an image of the intervertebral disc using a multiphoton microscopy imaging(http://... more »

Perspective.

Amazing how a little perspective change can alter how we see things.  I took this photo in Resurrection Bay in Alaska because I loved the gradient in colors along the shore.  But this photo really grabbed me when I rotated it from its proper perspective.  The gradient become more striking and really grabbed my attention.  Enjoy!
