Some really fascinating insights into Tumblr's architecture - I hadn't realised before quite how huge it is.

Flickr users, two days ago: "Flickr is being neglected! Yahoo's going to kill it! Update it!"

Flickr users, today: "Flickr has been updated! I hate it! Change it back! Waaaah!"

And that, friends, is why you should never really listen too much to users.

+John Gruber wrote a response to my gentle spoofing of his post about +Larry Page, so I've written and added a little gravy to his mashed potatoes. All of which has made me very hungry.

One of the things I wrote about the Pixel when it was first released was that it was a statement of intent, something which not only said that Google was capable of designing its own hardware, but also that the wet was evolving to the point where web apps could make use of gorgeous hardware like this.

I think the fact Google chose to give devs attending #IO13  a Pixel confirms that: it's a nudge to developers to build the next generation of touch-enabled, beautiful web apps.

And as +Harry McCracken notes in his article, "maybe the point of Chromebooks isn’t the Chromebooks themselves and how well they sell, but the degree to which they nudge the world towards a web-centric view of personal computing. Judged that way, they might already be a success."

Quick tip for anyone at #io13  who's got their Chromebook Pixel: make sure you try listening to some music on it as soon as you can. The sound quality from it is really good - better than pretty-much any laptop I've ever heard.

+Harry McCracken highlights the beauty of the new Google+ design, and I think he's absolutely right to do so. It's one of the most fantastic bits of web design that I've seen for... well, ever.

I'm not so sure that he's right about it not mattering, though. I'm a massive fan of both Twitter and Facebook, but the new Google+ is so good it makes me want to use it more - despite the fact that my friends and family aren't really there much. Sure, I won't spend all my time there. But I'm certain that the new design will make me spend more time there.

If Google added the ability to filter out specific sources from Google News, I would be a very happy chappy.

And the clown-show that is Forbes would be the first to go.

Interesting: Google has changed the weight of the font used in the black bar at the top of some of its services. At the top is the bar from Google+, which is the new style. At the bottom is the one from Gmail, which is the older, heavier style. New looks way better, I think.

Google is currently (unintentionally) facilitating a particularly nasty scam, which is catching naive users, costing them money, and potentially planting malware on their machines.

What's the scam? It's actually very simple. Do a search for "Hotmail customer service number" or a variant and you'll get a page of results which offer to give you a number to call for Hotmail. Except, of course, the majority of the results are actually third parties who will tell you you need "anti-virus software" to fix the problem, which they will sell to you for £40 or more. Of course, you'll need to give them your credit card details – over the phone – to buy it...

It's a cheaper, SEO-facilitated version of the scam that's also doing the rounds where a company will ring you up claiming to be Microsoft and telling you they've detected a virus andoffer... more »

Doing some experiments taking pictures with both the Nexus 4 and iPhone 4S to see how photos taken on each compare. What's obvious is that the N4's default point-and-shoot settings indoors are much poorer than the iPhone. The flash kicks in hard, the white balance is all over the place, and it generally just takes much worse pictures.
