Can you run a busy business for a week, on an Ubuntu powered computer?
7 days ago, I set myself an interesting challenge. I wanted to see if a small business owner could use the free, Ubuntu operating system and the free software available for it, for their business related tasks. If they could, it would be great news for business owners on a tiny budget.

Many small business owners really struggle to afford software, such as Photoshop and Microsoft Office. Equally, not every business owner can afford new hardware, and Ubuntu is known for making old computers run fast. You can download Ubuntu for free, from here.

So, for 7 days I did every business activity using Ubuntu Linux and some of the hundreds of thousands of free programs available for it.

When a prospective customer does not understand a marketing message, the focus should be on building a better message. Writing people off as stupid is where the real stupidity comes in. It also shifts the focus away from the business owner (who can fix the issue) to the prospective customer (who can’t).

Not liking the new Google+ font? Is it hard on your eyes?

There are some known issues with the new webfont in use (Roboto), with kerning and rendering on some configurations. Other users have reported general visual problems with the new font, which kerning fixes probably won't address.

Before going further, if you are actually having visual problems reading the new font, hover over the "Home" arrow on the left to get the drop-down menu, then choose "Send feedback" near the bottom to express your concerns. This information is used to help quantify the extent of user [dis]satisfaction with the UI.

So, if you would like to force Google+ to render in Arial (or failing that, your system's "sans-serif" font which is likely an Arial/Helvetica lookalike) by default, install this Stylish script with either the Stylish extension... more »
