I AM CHICAGO
meant to be viewed large

What a great location to view the Chicago skyline from the Planetarium, looking back over Lake Michigan. Taken one morning with +Vision Explorers a few weeks ago.vA sunrise trip out is always a good idea. This is a 3 portrait orientation image stitch panorama, taken with a TS/E. I am extremely pleased with the ND results from the +Formatt-Hitech new ProStop IRND filters used in this series of long exposures. They're the best on the market in my opinion, practically no color cast, great detail...bye bye B+W, you've been lapped (a few times)!

+Vision Explorers is having a new workshop in NYC in April. Sign up for the workshop and stay informed at http://www.visionexplorers.com. Sure to be another great experience for those working tirelessly to take their fine art images to "the next level". Don't miss it.

The Song Should Be I Left My Heart In Chicago

Chicago #2 - Chicago Long Exposure Series

San Francisco, I love you, but Chicago has captivated me in all the right ways. From the people to the architecture, I can not get enough of you. Granted, I rarely see you in your cold winter months.

Besides learning a few new tricks in how to see architecture and process long exposure shots, I wanted to use the workshop to produce my first fine art black & white series. In the complete series, my intention was to create a place of awe in size. Very much influenced by the aesthetic of mystical places, grunge, and steampunk; I wanted to create a massive place of beautiful lines and light. The remainder of the series will be posted over the next few weeks.

This series was shot during the +Vision Explorers Chicago long exposure workshop. A fantastic four days with +Joel Tjintjelaar, +Julia Anna Gospodarou, +Sharon Tenenbaum, and +Armand Dijcks.

*This is my entry for the contest from the workshop, +Daniel Portal.

I will write more about this later, but a special thank you to +Julia Anna Gospodarou. For the last six months, she has been mentoring me on not just long exposure architecture but developing my own style and weaving in my past love/studies in art, to my photography work. The result of the last six months has been profound on my artistic progress. -Thank you Julia.

Also, a nod and thanks to all the great people I met on the trip who influenced me by how they see the world (please go see what they produced from the trip): +Ajit Menon, +Mabry Campbell, +Swee Oh, +Dena Sanders, +Rod Clark, +Angie McMonigal, and all the others. Also, thank you for your critical eye +Andrew Webb.

If you like this, share it, please.

Ode to Black - Black Hope II – Anima Black www.juliaannagospodarou.com
Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco  - Architect Daniel Libeskind

Another addition to my Black series and the darkest and most difficult to work with so far, because of the dark tones and the limited range that I decided to use in my processing, but also because of the complexity of the volume and the fact that whatever light and shadow you see here is created from scratch according to my vision for this object. The building is one of the highlights of San Francisco and is in fact an addition to the museum, but is so impressive that it is drawing all the attention to it once you reach the square in front of the museum. The structure is cladded in dark-blue diamond shape steel sheets which can be astonishingly bright in the sun, but looking very dark and melancholic if the weather is overcast.

The most challenging when taking the shot was to find the best angle, the one that would tell what I intended it to tell and finally this angle was what you see. The space in front of the museum is narrow and long and finding a spot where you have open view to the entire volume, as well as an interesting composition is really difficult. But there is always a solution if you want to find it. So, what I did was to  find my solution  But I had to pay a price for it. Even if there were some other angles I could use with less cluttered background, the building itself wasn't “speaking” to me in any other way so what I had to do was to take this photo as it is but remove the background that was a high-rise building totally oppressing the delicate volumes of the museum. Meaning I had to shoot the building and the sky separately and reunite them in post. So, what you see now is quite far from reality, but as you know by now, I am not driven by the intention to mimic reality in my work, on the contrary, I'd say that I try to “run away” from it and present my own reality, even if what I create is just slightly resembling the real world. This image is one of the closest to this “alternative reality” concept and to the concept of “(en) visionography” that define my work and they  illustrate  it perfectly.  What you see is my ideal proposal for this space and building, a perfect image of it as I envision it in my mind. Also an image that can be a piece of the puzzle in the story that my Ode to Black – Black Hope series tells. More about the concept of the series with my next image that is coming soon.

Processing wise, this image is again one of those which could be considered typical to illustrate the technique I'm using when processing, the “photography drawing” technique. You've heard me talking about this before quite a few times but I've never went into details because I wasn't really considering it a technique for a long time. It had a slow evolution but recently I realized that I'm every time doing the same things even if I don't search for this and I like to experiment as much as I can. But somehow I always end up doing the same things, more or less and having consistent results. I think I should talk more in depth about this sometime soon, but I can already tell you a few things about it.  The roots of this technique can be found in  +Joel Tjintjelaar's  processing techniques  that I became familiar with somewhere in the beginning of my long exposure journey and that gave me ideas for a lot of other things (here's s link to Joel's most recent video tutorials https://sites.fastspring.com/fototv/instant/longexposureworkflow ) and is also based on my former drawing  background and the skills I've gained while practicing it making drawings of buildings for quite a long time in the past. What I basically do is to use the principles of drawing in black pencil on my images, changing the light balance in the image to suit my vision and intention.

As usually, in an attempt to keep this short, if you want to read more about the processing of this image or ask me anything you can head over to my site for more http://blog.juliaannagospodarou.com/ode-to-black-black-hope-ii-anima-black/  If you are curious to find out even more, I will have to make a more in depth description at some point. Let me know if you would want this.

Technical data: 286.0 sec. (for the sky), 1/60 sec. (for the building), @ f/11, Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 ED AF-S DX @ 10mm, ISO 100. Processing: LR4, PS CS6, NIK Silver Efex Pro 2_

Heracles The Gatekeeper
Arcadia Beach State Park, Arch Cape, OR

Here's Heracles The Gatekeeper, the third photo from my series titled "Among Gods." Like the other images in the series, this shot was also taken off the coast of Oregon last month.

The techniques I'm learning in +Joel Tjintjelaar's B&W masterclass are really enabling me to think creatively about what my final result looks like. I feel that I no longer have bottlenecks in putting out an interesting image. The class is nearing an end, but these are tools I'll carry with me for the rest of my life/career!

Hermes The Messenger
Tolovana Beach State Park, Cannon Beach, OR

Hermes The Messenger is the second photo from my series, Among Gods. Like the leading image posted last week (http://goo.gl/5eSLb), this photo was also taken on the Oregon Coast during my recent trip in June.

As promised, I'm continuing the dark, mythical, mystical, and magical theme and once again, I've used the incredible techniques that I'm learning in +Joel Tjintjelaar's B&W masterclass. I've been so fortunate to  receive instruction from Joel, not only for the post-processing side of things, but because he has taught me the importance of translating vision into an end result.

Touch of Light I Drakes Beach, CA

"No one every truly leaves us"
"For they shine their light upon us from the heavens beyond"
"To see their smile we must endeavor"
"To experience the touch of light upon us"

The ocean is just surreal and every time I look for a image to work on, I'm always drawn to one of my seascapes. This image is my second assignment for +Joel Tjintjelaar 's masterclass. It's been an incredible opportunity to learn from Joel, and he is very patient and a fantastic teacher.

How was this shot created:
I observed the spotlighting of a rock face when the clouds split apart momentarily. Immediately I set up a composition for getting just that and waited for the phenomenon to happen again.

How was this shot processed:
I used Joel's SGM and iSGM Technique to get the look I wanted on this one. It's very flexible and a fantastic tool to use. I'm very excited at the possibilities! :)

Ode to Black (Black Hope) IV - Shadow Black  www.juliaannagospodarou.com
Strata SE1 Building, London - Architects BFLS London

Another image in my series Ode to Black (Black Hope) with an addition or a change in the name, I still don't know if I will keep both names or just one, I'll probably decide when I reach the end of the series, as now it is still a work in progress. The change in name came from a change in direction as for the meaning of the series. Many times I work on my images in a certain way, or rather creating a certain atmosphere or general feel that can come from the use of shapes (like in “Like a Harp's Strings”series), the use of subject (as in Catharsis series), or the use of light, as now in the “Black Hope” series. I feel the need to explore different paths every time and express myself through different elements or use different ways of representation and I believed till very recently that this is a rational and conscious decision and choice that I make. But working on the Black series I discovered that, while the way I'm working on my images, technically speaking, is a very rational and controlled one, since I aim to create a perfect image at the end of the process, the way my vision is born and the way it evolves till the final touch of brush on the image: the whole process from capturing my images, choosing which ones to process and then finally processing them,  is rather a subconscious process that guides me many times without me even noticing it. Something very close to what they say about "being in a trance state" and following your vision there.
This series started apparently from nowhere, then it became an exploration of color black, of the absence of light and a challenge to see how far I can go with removing light till it doesn't exist anymore, to eventually turn into a psychological introspection with the unseen and unnoticed intention in the beginning (but  that came to surface just recently)  to express extreme emotions and be a highly personal representation of the world I see around me. Art is personal, art is selfish and I believe that in essence whatever we create is an expression of our inner need to explain the world, regardless if we believe that we study shapes, different subjects or experiment with light.

Technical data: 286.0 sec. @ f/11, Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 ED AF-S DX @ 13mm, ISO 100. Processing: LR4, PS CS6, NIK Silver Efex Pro 2.

I have exciting news to share!
We are moving, next month, to South Africa!!  We’ve loved our time back in Europe - four years in Switzerland with the alps, the snow, chocolate, cheese and good friends - and now it’s time to head back to Africa for the next adventure, this time to Johannesburg.

I’d love to hear about any contacts, connections, stunning locations, great restaurants, fantastic shops, etc. in or around Johannesburg, or really all of southern Africa.  You know how I love my travel.   :D

Evanescence, beautiful fine art work by +Deepak Ghosh > please comment on the original post.

 Evanescence

This shot of the #GoldenGateBridge  in #SanFrancisco  , #California  was taken on a very very foggy morning from #BatterySpencer . This was exposed for 19 seconds at f/22 using a 10 stop B+W ND filter.

To get to the final image, I started off with some minor RAW adjustment for noise reduction in #Apple 's  #Aperture  . Then I took a TIFF to #NikCollection  's #NikDfine  for noise reduction. Then, I took it to #Adobe  's #Photoshop  for some  #NikSilverEffexPro  magic and a few curve adjustments.

I hope you like it. Enjoy!

I had heard of a private beach not too far from where I live, where you had to climb down by a rope. I headed off in the direction and asked the nearest house for directions, the lady kindly let me through her garden and down some steps they had made for themselves. I was delighted with myself as I am getting a bit old to be climbing up and down cliffs with a rope to a beach, especially one I had never been to before. This lovely rock was there.

As always feel free to share and thanks for all the comments and likes, it really is very much appreciated.

Among Gods
Symons State Park, Oceanside, OR

This is the leading image of a new series I'm working on that will consist of coastal monoliths photographed during my trip to Oregon last week. As with much of my recent work, I used many of the techniques I'm learning in +Joel Tjintjelaar's B&W masterclass - which are amazing.

I have to say, this was the first time I actively thought about design and vision when taking and post-processing a photo. Big thanks to Joel for that. Joel also suggested that I pick a specific focus of subject, style, or genre to practice on, so you will definitely see some recurring themes in the upcoming series. If you like a combination of dark, mythical, mystical, and magical, stay tuned!

And now for the themes!

Chimneys
Long Exposure

I've been watching the new masterclass in Long Exposure and Black and White photography by +Joel Tjintjelaar and already I can see the impact on my work and on my thinking.  Many of the ideas that Joel presents have been rumbling around in my head but the workshop is helping me to see more clearly.  Black and White photography isn't about reality.  It's about art, about developing a vision, about creating, and as Joel says, "about sculpting light".

I have been looking at these chimneys out the window of my study, computer room and studio for over 10 years.  This may be the first time I really saw them.

Paradox

This is a shot of the beautiful #101CaliforniaSt  in #SanFrancisco  's #FinancialDistrict  . No clouds here, but I still think it turned out okay. With so many lines and that much texture in the shot, I think no clouds makes for a cleaner image? Perhaps? Anyway, moving along...

I have to say that the mood that I was going for while shooting and while post-processing was inspired by the awesome +Julia Anna Gospodarou 's beautiful Ode to Black series (I wanted to post a link to the series, but I won't, and that's because I know you'd come back and laugh at this one, and quite frankly, I won't like it). I didn't go to shoot with this series in mind, but the dark and gloomy weather reminded me of it, and then I just kept sliding toward black! This one was also taken using B+W 10 stop ND filter and processed in #NikCollection  's Silver Effex Pro and #Adobe  's #Photoshop   . I hope you guys like it! Enjoy!

Yes, I know, I know … spring has started (where I am at least). Going to post one last winter scene though. Hope you don’t mind!? :-)

In the past few months, I have seen many photographs come by that feature solitary trees in their snowy surroundings. Wanted to balance things a bit by posting this image of not so lonely larch trees in their winter coat. I shot it last January during a hike near La Fouly, a small village located in the Val Ferret valley in the Swiss canton of Valais. It was quite windy and about minus 25°c (minus 13°f) that day. For some reason I liked this scene instantly when I saw it. Maybe because of the touch of fresh snow on the branches of the trees? Or because of the shape that the trees form together? Or just because of the simplicity of the scene? It might as well have been the thought that the trees seemed to cuddle up to withstand the freezing cold together though! Anyway … hope you like it as well!

I brought my new Nikon 70-200 f/4 lens along for the first time that day for testing. This is one of the results. In general the lens gives very nice results across the frame and great micro-contrast and details at all focal lengths. Looks like I will be selling a 70-200 f/2.8 lens soon :-)

Κάθαρσις | Catharsis IV –  Spellbound  http://www.juliaannagospodarou.com/
(catharsis = purification, renewal, reborn of the soul and spirit through art)
Metsovo, Pindus Mountains, Greece

Another lone tree in my winterscape series...
This project started two years ago. I wanted to photograph this place under snow for the last two winters, but as you probably know, I live in Greece and we do have a lot of sun and warm weather, but snow is a rarity. Plus, this place is quite far away from my home (some 450km to be exact) so it's not too easy to get there, meaning that I was relying quite a lot on luck, which I finally had this winter.
Everything I shot in this series has been shot in not more than a couple of hours and I still have a lot of images, even very different than the one in this series that I either processed or I will process because I like them all. I have also done some experiments with ICM (intentional camera movement), some very minimal images but surreal and quite hunting, and they will probably become an independent  series and I also have some other shots with larger subjects. What I want to say with this is that sometimes the conditions are so perfect: weather, place, inspiration, moment, luck that almost every click you make can result in a finished image. It's quite rare for  all these to come together and create such a perfect moment, but this day was one of those moments. These two or three hours that I was there shooting trees were some of the most intense and rewarding in my photographic life. And I could say that this series reflects somehow the course of  my recent life  and it helped me to find  answers to a lot of questions that I had   in a process of “finding myself” artistically and individually. As I have already said I consider art as a very personal issue, as something you do because you deeply need it, as a tool in interpreting life and the world around us and I don't believe in any other message than the personal one as far as real art is concerned.
I'm trying to keep it short here (yes, this s short for me :), so, if you want to read about the creation, technical details and the processing of this photo and the Catharsis series come over to my blog where I continue my story. http://blog.juliaannagospodarou.com/catharsis-iv-spellbound-making-of/

Dichotomy

This is a shot of #BayBridge  in #SanFrancisco  , #California  . I exposed this shot for 479 seconds just before sunset using a 10 stop B+W ND filter stacked with a 6 stop #HiTech   ND filter. I used 4 presets from #NikCollection  's #SilverEffexPro  , many many selections, curve adjustments, and gradient masks to achieve this final result.

I don't get to shoot during the week, and during the weekend, I get 1 evening and/or 1 morning to use for photography. So, I don't generally walk into a scene rich with glorious light or gracefully moving clouds, but as you can see, this evening was different! Enjoy!

The Broccoli Tree

Ha... yeah I know. Funny name. But that was what this little tree reminded me off. This was photographed in Yellowstone NP 2 weeks ago. Beautiful park (although we only saw the north part of it due to winter road closures)!

Funny story. We were driving back and I saw this tree on this hill from a long ways away. It's like my eyes are constantly scanning for things like this. Turned out... This little one was on a hill besides the Yellowstone National Park Training Center.

Yeah I know.
PURE WILDERNESS! :)

But the light was so good (soft veil in front of the sun). The angle and shape was so interesting. I couldn't resist! I HAD to photograph this.

By a lack of a better name I call this 'The Broccoli Tree'. Just for now... :D

Happy To Be

The path to enlightenment is not a path at all,
it’s actually a metaphor for the time it takes for you to allow yourself to be happy
with who you already are,
where you’re already at,
and what you already have,
no matter what.

...haze all in my eyes, Don't know if it's day or night, You've got me blowin, blowin my mind, Is it tomorrow or just the end of time? ~Jimi Hendrix

I’m back from 2 weeks in tropical paradise.  I must say though that I feel a bit in a haze.  We left 30+ degree sunny weather and landed in 6 degree full on winter fog.  So surreal.  Spring is struggling to spring here, but I am so ready for  sunshine and green plants.  Has Spring sprung where you are?

Apologies that this may be a post and run.  I have a sick little one at home today - for the past three days actually. :(

ode to black III - extreme black
Willis Building, City of London -  Architect Sir Norman Foster

We are what we create.
I have no doubt about it.  We might be searching for a way of expression  for long years and try a lot of things till we find it, we may be struggling with prejudice and limitations, with doubt and with being misunderstood, we may have to ignore common sense and go against the flow, we may have to figure out new ways of escaping what we call reason, what we call reality (what is reality anyway?) but in the end, what we will settle for can only be that very thing  that expresses what we are completely, that helps us feel accomplished and free, that helps a restless soul find peace and allow us to stop and take a breath. If you look at this image you will see very much of what I am. I won't explain it, I don't want to limit your imagination. :) I will say just one thing: whatever this journey may take, do it! It's much better to burn out searching than never know...

OK, now that we said what was important, here's a few words about this image. First, it's been  two and a half months since my last architectural image, which may seem a lot but it actually isn't for me, as I've done a lot of searching, discovered a lot of things, even worked on  a handful of images that are to come soon. I've done some thinking, I've done some experimenting and the results will show in the months to come. I've even tried to step away from architectural photography to see how it is, but despite the fact that I love all kinds of photography, I think my call is architectural photography. There's nothing I love more than working with shapes and light, nothing I like more than abstracting a volume till it shows a part that would hardly show to the naked eye.  I finally understood what I'm trying to do in photography and that is exactly what I'm doing in architecture too. I am designing my photographs to suit my vision. I am deconstructing the volumes I see and recomposing them using light  and shadow, I am in essence using the existing subject, I'm using reality as a base on which I build my own dreams. Photography, architectural photography is the tool my imagination needs to stay alive and to express itself.  It would be interesting I think to show you the RAW file of this image. I'm sure you wouldn't recognize much of what you see here in that image. But hey, you will tell me, that's manipulation! Well, yes, you're perfectly right, I will answer you! But who said I want to do traditional photography anyway? This may not even be photography, as a matter of fact. This may be something else. This IS something else! As I was calling it a while ago while discussing with a friend, this is “(en)visionography”. More on this concept  coming soon...

And at last a few words about the image and the processing side of it... But, since this is getting long, let's better move over to my site if you want to read more about processing and also to read my answer to a question I'm getting quite often lately, a question about my skies... http://blog.juliaannagospodarou.com/ode-to-black-iii-extreme-black-making-of/

"Lost Lake" - http://www.grantmurrayphotography.com/

This image was created on the shore of Lost Lake in Whistler, British Columbia.

It was a glorious Sunday afternoon in September 2012 and the weather Gods really were kind to me that day. It had been 35 degrees Celsius with blue sky for 4 days, which made my then 8 month pregnant wife a very unhappy camper. Thankfully the heat finally broke on the Sunday and the high was 16 degrees Celsius, which made being outside a pleasure.

The little flower (weed?) on the rock finally played ball and remained still for this exposure. The wind was pretty strong, so I had many aborted attempts before everything fell into place. Long Exposure photography requires a lot of zen like patience and just being out in nature is enough...an image or two you are happy with is the icing on the cake.

British Columbia really is a special part of the world to live in, with so much beauty and diversity in every direction. I really feel blessed to call this place home (technically I call Vancouver home, but you know what I mean).

I used a 10 stop ND filter and a 3 stop hard grad ND filter, to get the right level of contrast and detail in the clouds, mountains, reflections and water.

The techie stuff:

Sony A850 D-SLR
Zeiss 16-35mm Lens
ISO: 100
Aperture: f/9
Exposure: 90 seconds
Focal Length: 22mm
Filters: Hitech Pro 10 stop ND filter, Lee 3 stop hard grad ND filter

Mystic Mountain
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/mystic-mountain/

I love mountains, fog and snow, so I am always happy when I can combine these three elements in an image. I captured this one during a snowshoe hike last January. It was a bit of a dull day with lot’s of fog and clouds … and it was way too cold. Most of the trail was in the shade, so there weren’t a lot of wide-angle opportunities. The fog around the mountains on the side of the trail was rather nice and interesting though, so I decided to focus on shooting them to see if I could get something intimate and dramatic. The only thing I badly needed was a 4th element to play along: the light. And it did!

No filters were used for this image. I already knew that I was going to process this one in B&W when I shot it. I used Adobe’s Lightroom 4.3 and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2 to get to this result.

Hope you like it!

From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/one/

I am quite busy at the moment with reviewing and processing the snowy mountainscapes I have been shooting in the past few months. The winter unfortunately hasn’t been brilliant for photography over here, however it does look like I got away with some nice ones :)

The coming few months, I will focus on long exposure photography a bit more again. Haven’t been doing a lot of LE work lately and I miss it. This image was shot last month, during the only LE outing I have had since December last year. The conditions weren’t brilliant, but it did give me a chance to test 2 new lenses. This image is a minimalistic 4 minute exposure and features a simple sign post on a rock in Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). I opted for giving the image lots of negative space. Hope you like it!?

I captured the image with my new 85mm lens on a D800E. I used 3 Lee ND filters (10+3+3) to get to an exposure time of 4 minutes. The image was processed with Adobe’s Lightroom 4.3 and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2.

Heart to Heart I: Drakes Beach, California

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever

This is the first image from a new series I'm working on. I'm calling the series "Heart to Heart" because the connection I have with the mighty ocean transcends language, space, time and every other barrier. It is a connection of raw spirituality. The moment I see the water, I lose myself in it, its wonder, its magic and its beauty.

I took this shot during the Drakes beach photowalk organized by +Swee Oh . I'm probably gonna get pummeled for tagging +Larry Nienkark  +Guillaume Desachy  +Leo Deegan  +Justin Spelbrink  +Todd Draper  +Christopher Bradley  +Richard Saasta  and many others :)

How was this shot taken:
I used a 10 stop ND filter for this long exposure. I asked +Justin Spelbrink  to watch my tripod and make sure it doesn't fall. The tide was quite lively, although you may not see it at all here. 90 seconds later, I had this shot.

How was this shot processed:
I worked to remove any distractions in the image and cropped it as I first envisioned it. Using some of +Joel Tjintjelaar 's SGM techniques, I was able to bring out my vision in this image. Of course, I used Silver Efex Pro for the conversion, but thereon it was gradients, masking and some curves.
