Mike Runyon28,925While I realize a lot of people have to work on President's Day, it is worth while asking for the day off. The traffic is considerably less and the crowds are diminished, making for far more photo opportunities. All those who can attend can meet just inside the main gate as there's a large area to gather and then proceed on through the event. There is a lot to see and do, as well as some great food to go with! There are numerous shows and great displays and has been quite the fun time all the years I've attended. You can buy tickets at the main entrance or you can usually pick up discount tickets at Fry's groceries. http://royalfaires.com/arizona/ Even though you may not be able to attend, please share this with any and all you think might be interested in the event!Arizona Renaissance Festival President's Day Photowalk2013-02-18 18:00:0020

russ vallelunga29,282Sycamore is the second largest canyon in the Red Rock District of Coconino National Forest (the first being Oak Creek), but is lesser known, and less traveled.  It's also more pristine, less populated by 'venturers', and friendlier to unspoiled~nature photographic scenes.  A riparian habitat in the desert, the subjects to photograph range from macro to landscape.  30 minutes out of Cottonwood, Az, a light decent of 200 feet leads to a level, sandy hiking trail   I'm staging a 'hiking' photowalk here, September 16th (alternate date, Sept. 30th if the 16th turns out to be unsuitable due to weather).   This is wilderness habitat.  The trail is mostly sandy and smooth, but sturdy shoes are needed. Bring at least 2 quarts of water per person (or purification tablets for the natural springwater); pack a non-perishable lunch, plus snacks.  There are *no* toilet facilities in the wilderness. I will bring a light shovel and a couple rolls of TP; we shall be considerate in covering any natural wastes and elsewise packing out what we pack in.  Animal subjects may include Golden eagles, mountain lions, bobcats, badgers, great blue herons, and black bears (most are elusive, but it could happen) and certainly smaller birds, squirrels, rabbits, and reptiles.  Natural subjects include miniwaterfalls, sandy waterways with moss and fungi, and water pools bathed in red-rock reflections.   Flora subjects include cottonwood, sycamore, and Arizona walnut trees, & a variety of wildflowers, vines, moss and fungi.  The photowalk will end about 2 miles in, at a pool of water about the size of an Olympic sized pool, surrounded by rocks of many colors. You're invited to camp out overnight at the trailhead for an early start/meet & greet  (campfires may be prohibited--bring a camping stove, or cooler for chilled foods).  There's no moon on the 16th, so I will offer assistance in astro-photography if desired.   Morning travelers to the event should use a travel site such as googlemaps or mapquest to determine at what time in the wee-hours of the morning they will need to leave from their location to arrive by 7:30am, then leave 1/2 hour earlier (just to be sure).  Those arriving late are welcomed to follow down the well-marked trail to catch up with the group.  Photowalk: Parson's Trail, Sycamore Canyon, Az2012-09-16 16:00:0011

Big Bird in a Little Pond
This Blue Heron was hanging at Ayer Lake in the Boyce Thompson Arboretum Sunday early morning. He was probably wondering where everyone else was, as he was the only bird at the lake, which is more a large pond than a lake.
He was probably trying for one of the many other larger lakes in the area and got off course. The first time I've seen a large waterbird there.

Lost Photo
A couple of weeks back I purchased a very gently used Nikon F-5 with body cap and manual from a Florida dealer on Ebay. When I eventually got around to reading the manual, this picture dropped from the back pages.
From the appearance of the photo it would well predate the F-5 which was manufactured between 1996 & 2004. It would appear to be from the early 1900's judging from the carpet, the background and the happy expression of the family's faces. A lot of shots from that era were done without the subjects smiling.
It would be fascinating to know the story behind the shot and today I have emailed the seller asking if the photo is his and if he'd like it returned. So far I haven't heard back from, but hope I do.

Still One of my Favorites!
While it seems there are some radical libtards that are trying to ban "Gone With The Wind", I have my copy and until and unless the PC Police want to try breaking in my door to take it, I'll keep on enjoying this classic movie. It's still a masterpiece after all these years.
BTW did you notice the sign in my yard that said "Gun Free Zone"? Of course you didn't! Think about it!

Nikon F-5
I purchased this bad boy from a Florida dealer Saturday about 9:30am (12:30pm FL time). It was delivered about noon on Monday! Super fast USPS priority. I bought it body only.
Relating to fast, this beast can shoot at 7.5 frames per second. Now that's fast! I can burn through a 36 exposure role in about 4.5 sec. It can also focus at a blazing fast rate, way faster than my D7000 & D7100 DSLRs can with the same lenses. Some of the camera review sites say it's almost thought focusing, it's so quick. I think that may be partially due to the fact it uses 8 AA batteries, giving it 12v to play with, while most DSLRs use between 6-7 volts.
The only review complaints I've found on it is it's weight which is 3.13 lbs. while my D7100 weighs in at 2.01lbs. However that's light compared to my Nikon F-2 which comes in at 4.11lbs. with it's motor drive in... more »

However that's light compared to my Nikon F-2 which comes in at 4.11lbs. with it's motor drive in place!
This particular camera looks as though it's hardly ever been used as there's not a mark or blemish of any kind on it anywhere. Many of the controls and function are laid out very similarly to my DSLRs and you can adjust almost anything.
Most major controls have locks, so you can't accidentally change settings you might not want to, including the power switch. Very advanced for it's time and I got it for about 1/10 of the factory introductory price, so I'm a happy camper!

Proud Mary
The City of Apache Junction Parks & Rec put on a concert with an excellent group called "Outside The Line" this past Saturday evening. Even though it was close to 110° it was very enjoyable.
The band played all the latest songs, such as "Proud Mary", "My Girl" , a few from ZZ Top and many others. Well, maybe the songs weren't quite the latest from the current Top 40, but better to listen to and they did it well.
Hats off to both Apache Junction Parks & Rec and Outside The Line!

Bike At Your Own Risk!
For Weeklyphotoproject2015-Things in a row
Saw this while out driving around the east side of Apache Junction the other day and had to laugh.
I’ve seen all 4 of these bike lane signs at one time or another, but not all of them within 1/10 of a mile of each other.
It would seem to be a bit confusing, but that’s what the highway department gets paid the big bucks for! Maybe it’s an Apache Junction thing.

Not My Day!
I had ordered a second Nikon speedlight and it was sent USPS Priority Mail. It went from Fort Worth to Phoenix, then to the PO here in Apache Junction and now it appears they have sent it clear to Peoria, AZ, 50 miles away on the other side of the valley and it still says it will be delivered today!
I really don't think that's going to happen! No wonder the post office is losing money!

IRS Scam Alert!
Just got a call, supposedly from the Internal Revenue Service, stating they were filing suit against me and I was to call them back at 202-697-9892 for more information.
Since the IRS has all 800 numbers and they always notify you by mail if there's a problem I didn't bother calling back, as this is totally a scam!
A quick online check revealed they are trying this ploy all across the country!
Just wanted to mention it in case someone else might get the same call and think it's real. It's not!
Don't fall for it!

Crockpot Chicken
Normally when I do a whole chicken for dinner I do it on the grill using the rotisserie. Today it's been raining most of the day and I had read an article about how good a chicken is cooked in a crockpot, so I thought I'd give it a try.
Under the chicken there are sliced carrots, celery, cauliflower, broccoli and sliced onion. The chicken has been butter basted with a number of spices added to kick up the flavor.
It's starting to look like it's going to fall off the bone, but the main drawback I see with the crockpot is you have to put up with the very tempting aroma for several hours!
