Markos Giannopoulos13,655Engagers VI: Christmas edition // It's a festive season so my monthly "round-up & thank you" circle is on the right mood!First some stats on people who engaged me (gathered via +Circloscope) and on my posts (tracked by +CircleCount):September: 620 plussers, 93 commentators and 86 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 745 +1s, 74 re-shares and 117 comments October: 395 plussers, 33 commentators and 39 sharers on 43 posts for a total of 1057 +1s, 80 re-shares and 165 comments November: 616 plussers, 114 commentators and 176 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 1109 +1s, 234 re-shares and 227 commentsA great month fuelled by two posts: 6+1 WordPress initial-setup plugins  (http://bit.ly/1bKXVgX 359 +1s, 59 comments, 183 re-shares) and Ode à Eiffel (http://bit.ly/1heptNZ 46 +1s, 4 comments, 5 re-shares). If I wanted to get "analytical" about it, it was two posts with some decent value (helpful list of plugins in one case on a every-day issue for a WordPress developer and an album of 18 original photos of night Paris on the other) :) So on to the circle: the formula for this month is - Plussers who are on over 3 engagers circles (so basically who have engaged with me in previous months as well this one)  - Sharers and commentators - A few kind highly-engaging people who have shared original circles including me. - People with over 300 in G+'s "relevance score" (as reported by +Circloscope), e.g. the people Google considers that I interact more and post similar content to mine (or of my interest)All in all, this came to a healthy group of 340 content creators and real engagers interested in technology and photography. Feel free to add them! As usual, stats and circle creation for this post were only made possible thanks to +CircleCount and +Circloscope. #engagers   #circleshare #circlesharing   #circleversary #milestone #googleplus #circleoftheday #circleplus #public #publiccircles 2013-12-16 17:49:57340441178CC G+

Markos Giannopoulos3,766197 interesting People // If you're into technology, the Web, photography and science, here's a circle to consider. Methodology: out of 3200 people that I follow, using +Circloscope I ordered them according to relevance score (calculated by Google depending on whose posts I engage the most) and filtered for a value over 30, then filtered for whether they are active (when was their last post) and finally filtered by whether they were in my "must read" circles. Ryan Howard36So I'm actually really digging Google+. It seems that a lot of folks have given up on it as simply a Facebook alternative, but I think that's the wrong way to look at it.Really I think it's best to look at G+ as a hybrid of something like Twitter, FB, RSS and a blog. While you can use it to keep in touch with friends it also offers a lot of opportunities for sharing information and ideas across a wide variety of people. For example I started following this Google circle that I'm sharing, from it I've learned a LOT about android development, chrome and other google projects, but at the same time I've learned more than I imagined about the science of coffee brewing and some great travel destinations. One of the important steps to actually using Google+ effectively seems to be realizing that it's not all about your "wall/stream" as a catch all. The tool seems to be much more effective when you skip through your streams by circle. For example, when I want to see what my friends are up to I check that Circle's stream, when I want to see what my friends in the States are doing I can check out that stream, or if I'm looking to see what different projects are coming up through Google I check my Google Circle's stream.I think it's also important to realize that unlike facebook but like twitter, you WANT to follow people you DONT KNOW. Don't be afraid, there are lots of interesting folks and posts out there and if you see something interesting, give that person a follow and throw them in a Circle that makes sense. Then going forward you can target your posts to people in the circles that might find them interesting.Anyway, the tl;dnr: Use circles, follow people, be a nerd.. and more importantly let's share some circles. If you have one with interesting people, share it like this and you'll really see the potential of the site open up.2012-01-19 23:34:0266603CC G+

Today I am only using web apps on my mobile. I have prepared my home screen and turned off app notificatons and I will document my day.

It's already off to a poor start based on the lack of decent icons. :)

Web Fundamentals and Web Starter Kit: Resources for Modern Web Development

The web is a rich computing platform with unparalleled reach. In recent years, mobile devices have brought the web to billions of new users and introduced many new device capabilities, screen sizes, input methods, and more. To help developers navigate this brave new world, we built Web Fundamentals (https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/), a curated source for modern best practices. Today, we’re making it even easier to build multi-device experiences with the Beta release of the Web Starter Kit (https://developers.google.com/web/starter-kit/).

Web Animations is a new animation model designed by multiple browser vendors and is now shipping in Blink. Chrome shipped CSS Animations and CSS Transitions running on top of Web Animations at the end of 2013. New Web Animation capabilities are now exposed in JS and give web developers powerful creative control of animations from JS but without jank. The Web Animations engine is one of the core features used by the Polymer project. This session explains the model, the new APIs, how to use them and shows real world examples of how to integrate them into your sites now.

Chrome Canary has an experimental implementation of NetInfo API! ... And we're looking for feedback! Instructions to give it a try:

- Boot up Chrome Canary (works on mobile Canary as well)
- Enable chrome://flags/#enable-experimental-web-platform-features

API, use cases, and Chrome design docs:
- https://docs.google.com/a/chromium.org/document/d/1LTk9uVMGi4kurzcF5ellsAJReTF31fFJMHrQwSVtBjc/edit?pli=1

Question: is it worth exposing more information about the type of cellular (and other) connections? E.g. HSPA vs LTE, 2G vs 3G vs 4G. If yes, how would you use it? Concrete use cases would go a long way here! And if not, why not?

Android 4.4.3 aka KitKat MR2 is rolling out. In this release the WebView has been updated to Chromium M33, bringing security and stability enhancements, as well as bug fixes.

Additionally, M33 includes:
- DevTools screencast [1] is supported for WebView. Allowing easy capture of screenshots on desktop, and viewing the contents of off-screen WebViews inside Chrome DevTools
- Improved HTML5 Canvas performance with support for hardware-acceleration
- Vibration API [2] (with android.permission.VIBRATE)
- HTML5 form validation [3]
- HTML datalist tag [4]

The default user-agent string for a WebView running on Android 4.4.3 has been updated to incorporate 33.0.0.0 as the version number.

We have got a lot of good feedback on Web Fundamentals (see our public issue tracker https://github.com/google/WebFundamentals/issues?direction=desc&sort=updated&state=open).  Technically it is still not launched, so we get to play with it a lot still :)

We have just gone through a large url restructuring.  For example
https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/documentation/multi-device-layouts is now just https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/layouts/

Much clearer if you ask me.

When qualifying a new Chrome OS board for release, the test engineering team for Chrome OS performs lots of tests that take human testers multiple days to complete. While the tests cannot be performed in parallel, each one can be automated. To accelerate board bring-up and ensure quality, the Chrome OS team is in the process of automating the tests so that partners can run them on site and this, is called MobLab.

With MobLab, partners get a robust, low-maintenance test environment where they can:
- Run the same tests in a repeatable fashion as in the Chrome OS lab.
- View test results.
- Access build images for projects they are responsible for.
- Run custom local tests that are not a part of the Chromium OS source tree.

Sometimes people complain that TouchEvents just stop arriving mid-stream.

Usually this is due to a touchcancel event that goes unnoticed  (eg. see http://crbug.com/293467 and http://crbug.com/260732), but sometimes it's a subtler issue.  Touch Events are always captured to the inner most element of the touch, so all subsequent events for that touch will continue to be sent to that element.  This is often exactly what you want, except when that element gets moved or removed during the touch.  In that case the events will continue to go to the moved/removed element and any handlers on ancestor elements will see a broken touch event stream.

One easy way to avoid this is to always attach your touchmove/touchend/touchcancel handlers to the precise target of a touchstart event.  Eg:

element.addEventListener('touchstart', function(event) {

Who else needs to control screen dimming and disable the auto-logout/dimming/sleep when building a mobile web app? If so, you might want to star this bug: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=372443

Use case: I want to build a simple web app to help me keep score while playing a table-top game. I do not want to get auto-logged out during the game.

I know native mobile can control the auto-logout/dimming/sleep feature. Let's give it to mobile web apps, too!

(also, does this already exist? :)

A single EditText for multiple input
Very inspired by the Minimal Format Interface[0].

I implemented an account creation form with only one EditText. The idea here is to pack a multiple (4 in the sample) input form in one field. As a result, the user input is easier and a more fluent process.

Also, I completely rediscovered TextSwitcher[1] to animate the form: title, error message. It's very basic but simple to use.

Project on github: https://github.com/flavienlaurent/singleinputform
Demo on youtube: Single input form

This is why google PageSpeed API / Service is amazing.  The original and optimized versions of my site finish loading at the exact same time on this test.  However at .9 second you can see the important content (progress) of the optimized site, while the original is blank.  You can clearly see what it loads and in what order.
I love this service.
