Michael Bonocore295,732_* SmugMug Is Looking For Your Cover Photos*_ Cover photos are bigger and better on Google+ now (http://bit.ly/WUbLtN), and, since I am in charge of updating our Google+ content I thought, hey, with all that space, why not feature YOUR photos in that prime real estate? Today, we are opening the door for your submissions. Each month, a panel of judges will pick one amazing photographer to feature on the @118357019708110162087 page to greet visitors. The winner will also be a judge in the next month's selection. You'll also receive a @118357019708110162087 hoodie and swag care package. To help get this party started, we have changed our cover photo to @112957708071337353347's amazing image, _"The Future Is Now"_, taken in Dubai, UAE. Elia is also our special guest judge for the first month of this cover photo hunt, and he can't wait to see the great images that we are confident you will submit! So, enough talking…how do you enter? *Sign up for the _SmugMug Cover Photo Submissions For April_ event. *Click the "Add Photos" Button in the event, and upload your submission. The new cover photos can be up to 2120px by 1192px, so please submit a photo with this minimum size requirement. Photos will be displayed in a 16:9 Aspect Ratio, so please make sure submissions as close to 16:9 as possible, so we don't lose any of the valuable image *One Photo per person *Take a look at all of the entries, and feel free to +1 and comment on the photos that you are drawn too. Clicking on "Actions"--->"Show Photo View" will display all of the photos in a beautiful gallery. *After the contest closes on March 29th at 11:59PM PST, a panel of judges, including +Elia Locardi, will select the winner, and the new cover photo and winner announcement will be made on April 1st, 2013. *Submissions will be judged on uniqueness, creativity, and overall "Wow" factor. *Sign up for the May event, which will also be open for submissions on April 1st. *You do not need to be a @118357019708110162087 customer to enter, so please share with your fellow photographers. That's it! So let's see it Google+. Will your photo be the next @118357019708110162087 cover photo? More about this photo from @112957708071337353347 travel photography blog at www.blamethemokey.com  _"The Meydan Bridge is a VIP entrance to the Meydan Racecourse, a mega structure in Dubai that is able to accommodate over 60,000 spectators in a 1 mile long grandstand. It was a strange feeling actually – to be standing on this opulent mega structure in the middle of the desert, miles away from the city, and with nobody around. Half the lights were dead too. I guess after Tom Cruise was finished driving over it in Mission Impossible 3, they really didn’t have a need to maintain it anymore. :)"_ Nikon D700  14-24mm  f/5.6  ISO 200SmugMug Cover Photo Submissions For April2013-03-08 00:00:00278

Those people that inspired me...touched my soul with their work or made me laugh my pants off.It took me over 2 years to fill this circle up to 500 inspirators, but today... I finally added my last person. :)I will seek more of these in the future, don't worry, and this means I will have to share multiple circles from now on, but for now...these are the 500 most inspirational people on Google Plus for me.A great big Thank You to everybody in this circle for enriching my Google Plus experience and inspire and motivate me in becoming a better photographer.artist. #circleshare   #circlesharing   #circles  2014-01-09 22:05:0550031930

There’s a message being spread all over social networks. It sounds something like this:

“Stress is caused by giving a f*ck.” or “The less you give a damn, the happier you will be.”

These statements are misleading, at best — and, at worst, simply false.

With regard to the first:

Stress is not caused by giving a f*ck. Stress is caused by trying to have power over things that are beyond your control. There’s a difference.

The act of saying “F*ck it, I don’t care!” is simply an acceptance that you are no longer going to try to change something that you couldn’t control anyway. It’s not the caring that’s the problem, it’s a problem with misdirected focus and an emotional attachment to an outcome you had no power over.

It’s like worrying — the mental process of worrying about something accomplishes nothing.

Whether it’s a smile on someone’s face or a look of gratitude in their eyes, every day is an opportunity to bring something wonderful to the world that won’t exist in the universe until you — and you alone — create it.

Every single moment in our lives is a one-of-a-kind opportunity. And although the positive moments we share with others can sometimes seem insignificant, never underestimate the power they can have on those who are affected by them.

Every time you perform an act of kindness, you generate a wave of positive energy that didn’t exist in that form before you created it. That wave creates ripples that can be both long-lasting and far-reaching.

Create and contribute to these ripples whenever you can and you may just find you attract more of the types of positive moments you desire in your life.

The people you encounter in your life are alwaysmuch more l... more »

“Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not.” — Elbert Hubbard

Your ability to listen to and take action based on your inner voice — regardless of how you feel, other influences, or temptations you face — is the key to self-mastery.

When you increase (or decrease) your discipline in one area, it increases (or decreases) your discipline in all areas that require self-control.

Like a muscle, the more you exercise self-control on a consistent basis, the stronger you get.

As your self-control increases, the more you gain the ability to direct your life in a manner that is congruent with the true you.

The more congruent your actions are with your thoughts and feelings, the better you feel about yourself and the decisions you make.

Every time you feel good about a decision you make, it raises your self-esteem and your self-confidence. You also reinforce in your mind what you are capable of and it makes it less difficult to make similar decisions in life.

“I’ve faced and overcome challenges like this before. There is no reason why I can’t do it again.”

The key to changing aspects of your life is not necessarily to make broad across-the-board changes. Doing so can often lead to one feeling overwhelmed. Instead, life changes often start with the ability to exercise self-control.

Without discipline, you can attempt to make major changes in your life, but will often fail because you don’t have the willpower, determination, or motivation to continue to face a challenge (or series of challenges) you set for yourself.

And when you lose the willpower to achieve a goal, it often has a domino affect on other goals.

You decide to start getting up early to workout. You also decide to improve your diet.

And it goes well for a while, but you find yourself too tired to get up early, so you don’t. As a result, you miss your morning workout.

The next morning you wake up tired again. And because you gave yourself permission to skip your workout the day before, you do it again. And although your inner voice is telling you to just suck it up and go to the gym, it takes much less effort to sleep for another hour than to get up and go.

So you miss two workouts and you feel guilty about it. And as you walk by a vending machine later in the day you think, “Well, I’ve already missed two workouts. A candy bar isn’t going to hurt.”

And the cycle perpetuates itself.

It is often more effective to tackle one challenging change at a time, than several.

It means rather than initiating several major changes at once, focusing on one task, one decision, or one action at a time instead and waiting until you know you have the discipline and patience necessary to tackle more or greater challenges.

“Patience is important. For something that is hastily constructed is just as quickly destroyed.” — Daisaku Ikeda

Breaking large goals up into manageable and achievable tasks is the key.

You don’t walk into a gym and attempt to lift the heaviest weights. You start with what you know you are capable of lifting and steadily increase the weight as your strength increases over time.

Self-discipline is built by challenging yourself to tackle what you believe yourself to be capable of now and steadily increasing it it as you grow stronger.

If you want to increase your ability to face and overcome challenges in life, make strengthening your self-discipline a priority.

“Discipline is just choosing between what you want now and what you want most.”

Life is short. Be responsible and respectful of others and treat yourself and others well, but don’t let anyone discourage you from having fun and going after whatever it is that fills you with joy. It’s your life. Live it.

Today is day one.

You’ve just been handed your life in its current state.

Your health, your skills, your relationships, your job, your education, everything.

So looking at your life today, what is it you want to change?
What is it you want to get better at?
What bad habits do you want to break?
What good habits do you want to adopt?

Does your current life accurately reflect your values of today or are you filling your schedule with activities you would no longer choose to do if you had the chance to start over?

Has your life become cluttered with possessions you no longer value as much as you once did or no longer use?

Make a note of your answers to these questions and redirect your aim and attention to what you want to improve in your life even if it means changing direction.

Make a note of your answers to these questions and redirect your aim and attention to what you want to improve in your life even if it means changing direction.

Let go of the things that are simply taking up space and time and no longer serve you.

Does your current life reflect who you are today or has it become a reflection of someone you used to be?

You are a different person today than you were last week, let alone years ago when you made decisions and commitments without the knowledge and experience you have at this moment.

Bring your life back in line with your current values & your current level of understanding. And do the things you know are good for you.

The more that you incorporate things that you truly value into your life — from knowledge to skills to people to activities — the more value you not only bring to your own life, the more value you bring to the people and places you encounter in your life on a daily basis.

Invest in bettering yourself and the future you. Let your future self look back on the changes you make today and be thankful you made them.

Today is always the first day of the rest of your life.

Today is day one.

Self love: Being content with the work-in-progress that you are. Not seeking the approval of others. Being yourself. Comparing yourself only to who you were in the past and not to others. Not thinking you are any better than anyone else.

Narcissism: None of the above.

Remember that time you lost something and didn’t think anyone would return it… But they did.

And you were so grateful for that.

Perhaps it gave you a bit more faith in humanity?

Be that person the next time you find something that isn’t yours and it’s possible to return it to the rightful owner (or to someone who can).

Because if you do take something that isn’t yours and claim it as your own, what you’re essentially saying is that you’re fine with other people taking your stuff when you misplace it.

Integrity isn’t only for when life is easy. It’s for when life is hard. It’s for when you face temptation or your values are challenged.

What you do and how you act when you are challenged and put to the test says a lot more about you and your true character than what you say or do when life is easy.

Find something that isn’t yours? Maintain your integrity, show your true character, and do the right thing.

“Men best show their character in trifles, where they are not on their guard. It is in the simplest habits, that we often see the boundless egotism which pays no regard to the feelings of others and denies nothing to itself.” – Arthur Schopenhauer

A world that continually caters to making people more and more comfortable creates a world full of people who are less and less capable of coping with — and being open to — even the slightest discomfort or inconvenience.

We need to teach people to be able to deal with the challenges of life, not attempt to remove them all.

There will always be bullying. There will always be inclement weather. Flight delays. Long lines. Loud neighbors. Bumps in roads. Rule breakers…

Don’t give your child an unusual name, they’ll get made fun of? No. How about we provide children with the ability to effectively deal with name-calling and to not have their self esteem be under other people’s control. How about we teach critical thinking and real-world problem solving skills?

How about we teach people effective coping and communication skills and stop encouraging a world of people who simply want to make noise and complain?

I’m sorry, but not having enough whipped cream on your Mocha Frappuccino is not a real problem. Having to wait in line is not a real problem. Being bored is not a real problem.

If you’re on fire, yeah, that’s a real problem.

The above inconveniences are simply symptoms of a problem. And the problem is that we should all be able to easily and effectively deal with these things without them turning into some kind of negative “event” in our lives.

Don’t give people or minor inconveniences the power to ruin your day. As that will be a day of your life wasted.

We should work on being stronger — and helping others be stronger — and not on constantly trying to make life easier and more comfortable.

The real world doesn’t go away just because we dress it up to look like something else. All that does is alienate us from what’s real and lessens our ability to effectively deal with the inevitable challenges we all must face in life.

“We acquire the strength we have overcome.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Dealing with discomfort, fear, and situations we don’t want be in — or situations that we are completely unfamiliar with — is an absolutely essential part of growth.

Who we are is a result of everything we’ve had to overcome in life and the attitude we chose to adopt during – or as a result of – challenges we’ve had to face.

You can choose to look at difficulties as disruptive and something to dread – or you can look at them as opportunities for growth and self improvement. Because difficulties & discomfort are simply one side of a coin while opportunities for growth are the other.

You can’t have growth without some degree of discomfort.

We may not be able to choose or even like the challenges that life throws our way, but we can always choose our attitude towards them.

Far too many people drift through life waiting for “the good stuff”. They choose a career or a path in life with the expectation that that path will bring them something they seek — perhaps happiness. And if it doesn’t come — or they find themselves conflicted because they feel as if they chose poorly — they think, “Well, this is the path I chose, there’s no changing it now.”

If you want to makes changes to improve yourself as a person, you can. And if you want to take action to change the trajectory of your life, you can do that, too.

You don’t have to sit back and watch your life pass you by thinking, “If only…” and regretting all the things you could’ve done, but chose not to.

You don’t have to sit back and watch your life pass you by thinking, “If only…” and regretting all the things you could’ve done, but chose not to.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” — Mark Twain

Remember: “Living life to the fullest means continually reaching out for newer, richer, deeper, life-changing experiences. It means using those experiences as a means for personal growth and pushing the boundaries of yourself mentally, spirituality, and intellectually for the betterment of yourself and the world at large.

Living life to the fullest means taking an active role in your own development. It means steering the rudder of your own life and taking advantage of your unique and powerful potential as a person.”

If you don’t like where you are in life or some aspect about yourself, you can take steps to change that. And if it sounds a little scary, there’s a pretty good chance that you’re on the right path. “Dealing with discomfort, fear, and situations we don’t want be in — or situations that we are completely unfamiliar with — is an absolutely essential part of growth.”

This is your life. Here. Today. Right now. Your life is in progress. Every day that passes is another day closer to your expiration date.

What you aim for and where you go in life as a result of striving to meet your goals is up to you.

“Everything you want should be yours: the type of work you want; the relationships you need; the social, mental, and aesthetic stimulation that will make you happy and fulfilled; the money you require for the lifestyle that is appropriate to you; and any requirement that you may (or may not) have for achievement or service to others. If you don’t aim for it all, you’ll never get it all. To aim for it requires that you know what you want.” — Richard Koch

If you want to make changes to yourself or your life, you can choose to make changes. But to do so means you have to be proactive and awake, not passive or asleep at the wheel.

So… are you awake?

Some people who claim to be leaders want you to feel like they are important. They’ll talk about their accolades and achievements. They’ll claim seniority. They’ll drop names and try to associate with important people. They’ll do just about anything but truly inspire you.

True leaders don’t waste time trying to convince you of their importance. True leaders will make you feel like you are important simply from their behavior and how they interact with those they encounter.

A true leader is someone that people believe in and want to help without being required to.

True power doesn’t demand action. It inspires it. And true leaders don’t demand respect. They earn it.

“A leader leads from in front, by the power of example. A ruler pushes from behind, by means of the club, the whip, the power of fear.” — Edward Abbey

“We have a saying in Tibet: If a problem can be solved there is no use worrying about it. If it can’t be solved, worrying will do no good.” – Dalai Lama

It is the same with trying to have power over things you cannot control. If you have no power over something, there is no use trying to control it.

To encourage people to not care about things is a step in the wrong direction. The world doesn’t need more people who don’t give a f*ck — or people who sit by and do nothing when they have a chance to make a positive difference. We already have those in abundance.

“Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don’t.” – Steve Maraboli

The fact is that a lack of caring, a lack of focus, a lack of priorities, and a lack of positive role models are reasons why the world is in the state that it’s in.

The world needs more people who do care — and care passionately about the things that matter. But by focusing only on the things that are within our power to change.

This is done, in part, by making a concerted effort to focus on solutions and progress and not in simply sharing problems and leaving them for someone else to take care of.

“Our anxiety does not come from thinking about the future, but from wanting to control it.” – Kahlil Gibran

To glorify an “I don’t give a f*ck” attitude is, in a way, a declaration that you will stand idly by and not give a damn when something happens in your life — or in the life of someone you care about — and when you have the power to make a positive difference, you will choose not to because, “Hey, [you] don’t give a f*ck!”, remember?

“The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.” – Albert Einstein

“But I don’t mean it that way”, you say. And if you don’t, great.

But I am speaking specifically to these two self-contained statements (being glorified on the Internet) which seem to imply that giving a f*ck or a damn (about anything) is the problem:

“Stress is caused by giving a f*ck.”
“The less you give a damn, the happier you will be.”

We should not be encouraging ourselves or others not to care or give a damn. Or toughening ourselves or our children to deal with a hostile world.

We should be encouraging people to care — and educating people on how to do so effectively — and teaching our children to be the change they wish to see in the world.

“It’s not our job to toughen our children up to face a cruel and heartless world. It’s our job to raise children who will make the world a little less cruel and heartless.” – L.R. Knost

We must learn to let go of those things we have no control over and focus on what we can do. Remember not to let the things you can't control stand in the way of what you can.

“Let go or be dragged.” – Zen Proverb

With regard to the second statement about not giving a damn:

It would be more accurate to say,

The less you give a damn about what people think of you, the happier you will be.
The less you compare yourself to others, the happier you will be.
The more you are your authentic self — and don’t seek the approval of others — the happier you will be.
The more you focus on the things you can control in your life (such as yourself and your emotions), and not trying to control the things you cannot (such as other people), the happier you will be.

“Inner Peace begins the moment you choose not to allow another person or event to control your emotions.“

To think that happiness comes from not caring about external factors is to confuse where happiness comes from — which is from within. As I’ve said before, don’t put the key to your happiness in someone else’s pocket.

“Happiness comes from within. It is not dependent on external things or on other people. You become vulnerable and can be easily hurt when your feelings of security and happiness depend on the behavior and actions of other people. Never give your power to anyone else.” – Brian L. Weiss

Simply not giving a damn about anything is a very blah and mundane way to live life. You can’t live life to the fullest without passion — and passion is caring.

“Happiness comes from within and is found in the present moment by making peace with the past and looking forward to the future.” – Doe Zantamata

“It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” – Leonardo da Vinci

That awkward moment you discover that you accidentally butt-dialed one of the managers at the cafe you frequent…

…because he walks up and apologizes for not calling you back.

I told him I’d forgive him for not calling me back if he’d forgive me for butt-dialing him.

“Deal!”

And that is how the delicate balance to the universe was restored today.

Walk into cafe.

One of the managers is punching in an order for pickup…

Now I’m not sure what the going rate for this product is, but I must admit, it sounds pretty fair.

Excerpt from: With respect, tolerance, and an open mind…

To simply take offense at something without giving it any thought is to deny yourself an opportunity for growth. Even if that growth simply means reaffirming what you already believe.

To think you have to agree with everything about a person is to deny yourself of some of the best friendships the world has to offer.

THE STONECUTTER

There was once a stonecutter, who was dissatisfied with himself and with his position in life.

One day, he passed a wealthy merchant’s house, and through the open gateway, saw many fine possessions and important visitors. “How powerful that merchant must be!” thought the stonecutter. He became very envious, and wished that he could be like the merchant. Then he would no longer have to live the life of a mere stonecutter.

To his great surprise, he suddenly became the merchant, enjoying more luxuries and power than he had ever dreamed of, envied and detested by those less wealthy than himself. But soon a high official passed by, carried in a sedan chair, accompanied by attendants, and escorted by soldiers beating gongs. Everyone, no matter how wealthy, had to bow low before the procession. “How powerful that official is!” he thought. “I wish that I could be a high official!”

Then he became the high official, carried everywhere in his embroidered sedan chair, feared and hated by the people all around, who had to bow down before him as he passed. It was a hot summer day, and the official felt very uncomfortable in the sticky sedan chair. He looked up at the sun. It shone proudly in the sky, unaffected by his presence. “How powerful the sun is!” he thought. “I wish that I could be the sun!”

Then he became the sun, shining fiercely down on everyone, scorching the fields, cursed by the farmers and laborers. But a huge black cloud moved between him and the earth, so that his light could no longer shine on everything below. “How powerful that storm cloud is!” he thought. “I wish that I could be a cloud!”

Then he became the cloud, flooding the fields and villages, shouted at by everyone. But soon he found that he was being pushed away by some great force, and realized that it was the wind. “How powerful it is!” he thought. “I wish that I could be the wind!”

Then he became the wind, blowing tiles off the roofs of houses, uprooting trees, hated and feared by all below him. But after a while, he ran up against something that would not move, no matter how forcefully he blew against it — a huge, towering stone. “How powerful that stone is!” he thought. “I wish that I could be a stone!” he thought. “I wish that I could be a stone!”

Then he became the stone, more powerful than anything else on earth. But as he stood there, he heard the sound of a hammer pounding a chisel into the solid rock, and felt himself being changed. “What could be more powerful than I, the stone?” he thought. He looked down and saw far below him the figure of a stonecutter.

As the media and politicians continue to polarize people, I think it’s important to remember that you don’t have to agree with anyone’s particular point of view or share their politics to get along.

People sometimes forget that some of the best relationships are those in which each person helps the other to broaden their perspective and grow as an individual.

To only interact with and surround yourself with people who agree with you and share your points of view tends to create a very narrow and distorted view of the world.

It has been said you become the average of the five people you interact with most. What kind of picture does that paint if you share exactly the same likes, dislikes, and view of the world?

To think you have to agree with everything about a person is to deny yourself of some of the best friendships the world has to offer.

To automatically dismiss someone because they are different than you does the same.

I think one of the best gifts anyone can give another person is something that results in the recipient saying, “I’d never thought about it like that before.”

An expanded point of view is a key to many locks you didn’t even know existed.

I certainly don’t expect everyone to always agree with me or see things from my point of view, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be friends.

And if we can’t be friends, that doesn’t mean we have to be enemies.

With respect, tolerance, and an open mind, anything is possible.

Your friend (the optimist),

You can start by broadening your perspective, increasing your tolerance for things that are different from you are accustomed to, and consciously pushing beyond your comfort zone.

Every new day is an opportunity for something extraordinary to happen. Don’t miss out because you rejected it for being, feeling, or looking different than what you considered “normal”.

It should go without saying, but if it doesn’t feel like the right thing to do, don’t don’t it.

And if you’ve inadvertently found yourself having done something that doesn’t sit well with you, have the courage to do what you can to make it right.

From: The Brain and Emotional Intelligence: New Insights

“Self-mastery requires self-awareness plus self-regulation, key components of emotional intelligence. One value of self-mastery is being in the right brain state for the job.

When it comes to personal effectiveness, we need to be in the best internal state for the task at hand, and every internal state has its advantages and downsides. For instance, research shows that the plusses of being in a positive mood are that we’re more creative, we’re better at problem solving, we have better mental flexibility, and we can be more efficient in decision making in many ways.

The negatives, though, include a tendency to be less discriminating in distinguishing weak from strong arguments, or making a decision too quickly, or paying too little attention to detail on a task that demands it.

On the other hand, there are some plusses to being in a sour mood – or at least more somber. These include a greater capacity to pay attention to detail, even in boring tasks – which suggests it’s best to get serious before reading a contract. In a negative mood we’re more skeptical, so, for example, we are less likely to simply rely on the opinions of experts, we ask searching questions, and come to our own conclusions. One theory about the utility of anger is that it mobilizes energy and focuses our attention on removing obstacles that thwart a goal – which can fuel, say, a drive to beat a competitor on the next round who has just won a victory over us (whether that competitor is a school team or another business).

The prime negative of being in a bad mood is, of course, that it’s unpleasant for us and those around us. But there are more subtle costs: At the cognitive level, we’re more pessimistic, and therefore more likely to give up more quickly when things go wrong than if we were in an optimistic state. Bad moods give us a negative bias toward whatever we might be considering, and so put a negative skew on our judgments. And because we’re less pleasant to be around we can be disruptive to the harmony of a team – a cranky team member can lower effectiveness for everyone.”

Integrity is not preying on people’s weaknesses to meet your own needs. Integrity is not making promises you cannot keep. At Sprouts. Get to the checkout. Cashier doesn’t see me.

Very stealthily roll my drink down the conveyor belt where it gets to the end, but the belt keeps moving and my drink keeps rolling.

Cashier finally notices, “Hey! Are you playing with my conveyor belt!?”

“Yesss!”, I smile, “Because I am an adult and no one can tell me not to!”

She laughs.

“Well, I mean except you.”

She laughs again.

“But you can’t ground me if I don’t listen!”

Laughing intensifies.

Yeah, it’s good to be a grown-up.

Life happens.

Sometimes it’s good.
Sometimes it’s bad.

And sometimes it dumps a pile of shit in your path.

What matters is not whether it’s fair (it often isn’t).
What matters is how one chooses to deal with it.

We can spend time complaining.
We can spend time pointing the finger.
We can spend time blaming others for the situations we find ourselves in.
And we can learn to identify as a victim of the unfairness of life.

Or we can take personal responsibility for our lives and use our ability to seek out more favorable options (including how to cope) and move on.

Every single person on the planet is forced to deal with hardship and misfortune at one time or another.

Every single person on the planet is forced to deal with hardship and misfortune at one time or another.

Sometimes it’s because we make bad decisions.
Sometimes it’s because we tolerate things far longer than we should.
Sometimes it’s because we’re in the wrong place at the wrong time.
And sometimes we are simply thrust into things we don’t want to be a part of.

But that’s life.
It happens to everyone at one time or another.

You don’t improve your life by complaining about the one you have.
You don’t improve your life by refusing to take personal responsibility for it.

You improve your life by taking steps to change it for the better.

It can be a lot of work — and it may require some sacrifices — but taking personal responsibility for one’s life and taking steps to change it is far more effective than staying where one is, doing nothing, and complaining about the view.

The fact is, our lives are a direct reflection of our priorities.

Want to be healthier? Focus on your health.
Want to be smarter? Focus on your education.
Want to be a better person? Focus on self-improvement.
Want to be more resilient? Challenge yourself.
Want to get over your fears? Face them.

If we don’t like where we are in life, we can change that. But complaining about it won’t do it. And blaming others won’t do it either.

Want a better life? Work for it.

Change your priorities and you change your life.

No one else is going to do it for you.

When I’m a bazillionaire, I’m going to invent a technology that provides subtitles for people who don’t verbalize clearly.

That’s right, for only 3 easy payments of $19.99, the Virtual Subtitle Tech 2000™ (VST2K™) will allow you to never have to ask someone to repeat themselves 3 times — only to ultimately just nod and smile because you still have absolutely no idea what they said.

“Embrace who you are and don’t make any apologies for being yourself.”

I’d like to add a major caveat to that:

First, we are all works in progress, we all make mistakes, we all have blind spots in our level of awareness (particularly with regard to ourselves), and we all have room for improvement.

While I am all for people being authentic and real, I’d much prefer not to encourage the assclowns, douchebags, and dirtbags to just “be themselves” and never apologize for it.

Sure, if you’re kind, compassionate, and authentic, if you strive for progress and improvement in your life and your self, if you aim to make a positive difference with what you have to offer, then by all means continue. Even if you occasionally make mistakes, as we all do.

But if you’re someone who goes through life making things more difficult, painful, or inconvenient for others, then perhaps it’s better you don’t just “be yourself”.

Perhaps it’s better if you aim to be the kind of person you and others can actually be proud of rather than just accept who you are with no intention to change.

“Think positive.”

No.

Think intelligently.

Know what you want. Believe it’s possible. Create a strategy to achieve your desire. Take action to make it happen. Acknowledge obstacles & focus on solutions to overcome them. Make mistakes & learn from them. Refine your strategy as necessary. And push forward.

Relying on chance and wishful thinking is not an effective way to dictate what happens to you — or because of you — in life.

Memes don’t change your life. You do when you know what you want and you act with intention.

“One of the most counterproductive pieces of advice spewed from keynotes, gurus, and motivational speakers of every stripe is this: Think positively. Why? It’s not a one-size-fits-all guide to leadership (or life) and adds considerably to your stress load. Because you not only have to tackle the obstacles you’re already facing; you have to also wrestle any negative thoughts you have about them to the ground.” — Jan Bruce (Forbes contributor)

In other news, did you know that pretty much all bananas available in stores today are genetic clones of each other?

It's true.

Now you know why it's felt like you've been eating the exact same banana over and over again your entire life. 'Cause I know I have.

A phenomenon I like to refer to as "Banana Vu".

Or, DBYLF ("Damn, banana, you look familiar!")

*This is also why there are two "Na's" in the word "banana". Before they were cloned they were just called "Banas".

Some of this is startlingly true.
