The Corporate Jet
The Good News: I have completed my interview with +Joel Tjintjelaar, and I am putting the finishing edits and touches on it. It will be ready for everyone's reading pleasure very soon. I think Joel really opened up and offered a very personal look into what makes him the artist that he clearly is. I, for one, am very excited to share it.
The Bad News: Unless you stop reading this post now, you might not be able to avert your eyes from my shitty excuse for an infrared architectural photo-- and you will have a very personal look into why I am not a very good architectural photographer. Ha! Perhaps I'll catch this corporate jet and blast out of here while I still can ...

Paradox
This is a shot of the beautiful #101CaliforniaSt in #SanFrancisco 's #FinancialDistrict . No clouds here, but I still think it turned out okay. With so many lines and that much texture in the shot, I think no clouds makes for a cleaner image? Perhaps? Anyway, moving along...
I have to say that the mood that I was going for while shooting and while post-processing was inspired by the awesome +Julia Anna Gospodarou 's beautiful Ode to Black series (I wanted to post a link to the series, but I won't, and that's because I know you'd come back and laugh at this one, and quite frankly, I won't like it). I didn't go to shoot with this series in mind, but the dark and gloomy weather reminded me of it, and then I just kept sliding toward black! This one was also taken using B+W 10 stop ND filter and processed in #NikCollection ... more »

Pathos
Just getting back from my first extended visit to Chicago. Spent most of the trip exploring all the architectural gems the city has to offer. There are a number of amazing buildings, but this one really struck me. From afar, It really pops from the rest of the skyline and up close it offers a number of interesting angles.

Yes, I know, I know … spring has started (where I am at least). Going to post one last winter scene though. Hope you don’t mind!? :-)
In the past few months, I have seen many photographs come by that feature solitary trees in their snowy surroundings. Wanted to balance things a bit by posting this image of not so lonely larch trees in their winter coat. I shot it last January during a hike near La Fouly, a small village located in the Val Ferret valley in the Swiss canton of Valais. It was quite windy and about minus 25°c (minus 13°f) that day. For some reason I liked this scene instantly when I saw it. Maybe because of the touch of fresh snow on the... more »

Metsovo, Pindus Mountains, Greece
Another lone tree in my winterscape series...
This project started two years ago. I wanted to photograph this place under snow for the last two winters, but as you probably know, I live in Greece and we do have a lot of sun and warm weather, but snow is a rarity. Plus, this place is quite far away from my home (some 450km to be exact) so it's not too easy to get there, meaning that I was relying quite a lot on luck, which I finally had this winter.
Everything I shot in this series has been shot in not more than a couple of hours and I still have a lot of images, even very different than the one in this series that I either processed or I will process because I like them all. I ... more »

Dichotomy
This is a shot of #BayBridge in #SanFrancisco , #California . I exposed this shot for 479 seconds just before sunset using a 10 stop B+W ND filter stacked with a 6 stop #HiTech ND filter. I used 4 presets from #NikCollection 's #SilverEffexPro , many many selections, curve adjustments, and gradient masks to achieve this final result.
I don't get to shoot during the week, and during the weekend, I get 1 evening and/or 1 morning to use for photography. So, I don't generally walk into a scene rich with glorious light or gracefully moving clouds, but as you can see, this evening was different! Enjoy!

The Broccoli Tree
Ha... yeah I know. Funny name. But that was what this little tree reminded me off. This was photographed in Yellowstone NP 2 weeks ago. Beautiful park (although we only saw the north part of it due to winter road closures)!
Funny story. We were driving back and I saw this tree on this hill from a long ways away. It's like my eyes are constantly scanning for things like this. Turned out... This little one was on a hill besides the Yellowstone National Park Training Center.
Yeah I know.
PURE WILDERNESS! :)
But the light was so good (soft veil in front of the sun). The angle and shape was so interesting. I couldn't resist! I HAD to photograph this.
By a lack of a better name I call this 'The Broccoli Tree'. Just for now... :D

...haze all in my eyes, Don't know if it's day or night, You've got me blowin, blowin my mind, Is it tomorrow or just the end of time? ~Jimi Hendrix
I’m back from 2 weeks in tropical paradise. I must say though that I feel a bit in a haze. We left 30+ degree sunny weather and landed in 6 degree full on winter fog. So surreal. Spring is struggling to spring here, but I am so ready for sunshine and green plants. Has Spring sprung where you are?
Apologies that this may be a post and run. I have a sick little one at home today - for the past three days actually. :(

ode to black III - extreme black
Willis Building, City of London - Architect Sir Norman Foster
We are what we create.
I have no doubt about it. We might be searching for a way of expression for long years and try a lot of things till we find it, we may be struggling with prejudice and limitations, with doubt and with being misunderstood, we may have to ignore common sense and go against the flow, we may have to figure out new ways of escaping what we call reason, what we call reality (what is reality anyway?) but in the end, what we will settle for can only be that very thing that expresses what we are completely, that helps us feel accomplished and free, that helps a restless soul find peace and allow us to stop and take a breath. If you look at this image you will see very much of what I am. I won't explain it, I don't want to limit your imagination. :) I will say ... more »

"Lost Lake" - http://www.grantmurrayphotography.com/
This image was created on the shore of Lost Lake in Whistler, British Columbia.
It was a glorious Sunday afternoon in September 2012 and the weather Gods really were kind to me that day. It had been 35 degrees Celsius with blue sky for 4 days, which made my then 8 month pregnant wife a very unhappy camper. Thankfully the heat finally broke on the Sunday and the high was 16 degrees Celsius, which made being outside a pleasure.
The little flower (weed?) on the rock finally played ball and remained still for this exposure. The wind was pretty strong, so I had many aborted attempts before everything fell into place. Long Exposure photography requires a lot of zen like patience and just being out in nature is enough...an image or two you are happy with is the icing on the cake.

Mystic Mountain
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/mystic-mountain/
I love mountains, fog and snow, so I am always happy when I can combine these three elements in an image. I captured this one during a snowshoe hike last January. It was a bit of a dull day with lot’s of fog and clouds … and it was way too cold. Most of the trail was in the shade, so there weren’t a lot of wide-angle opportunities. The fog around the mountains on the side of the trail was rather nice and interesting though, so I decided to focus on shooting them to see if I could get something intimate and dramatic. The only thing I badly needed was a 4th element to play along: the light. And it did!
No filters were used for this image. I already knew that I was going to process this one in B&W when I shot it. I used Adobe’s Lightroom 4.3 and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2 to get to this result.

One
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/one/
I am quite busy at the moment with reviewing and processing the snowy mountainscapes I have been shooting in the past few months. The winter unfortunately hasn’t been brilliant for photography over here, however it does look like I got away with some nice ones :)
The coming few months, I will focus on long exposure photography a bit more again. Haven’t been doing a lot of LE work lately and I miss it. This image was shot last month, during the only LE outing I have had since December last year. The conditions weren’t brilliant, but it did give me a chance to test 2 new lenses. This image is a minimalistic 4 minute exposure and features a simple sign post on a rock in Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). I opted for giving the image lots of negative space. Hope you like it!?

Heart to Heart I: Drakes Beach, California
The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever
This is the first image from a new series I'm working on. I'm calling the series "Heart to Heart" because the connection I have with the mighty ocean transcends language, space, time and every other barrier. It is a connection of raw spirituality. The moment I see the water, I lose myself in it, its wonder, its magic and its beauty.
I took this shot during the Drakes beach photowalk organized by +Swee Oh . I'm probably gonna get pummeled for tagging +Larry Nienkark +Guillaume Desachy +Leo Deegan +Justin Spelbrink +Todd Draper +Christopher Bradley +Richard Saasta and many others :)

Typically I don't like to rework images, but felt I "had to" in this case once I became more comfortable with Joel's iSGM technique. These building now have the presence that I want. Part of a small series of images on highlighting/dramatizing buildings that are otherwise unassuming and which were not designed by the super famous. Besides those requirements, the buildings need numerous angles and planes for me to individually select to change highlights and tonal range. On October 6th, 2010, Juno award winning, Canadian Jazz greats David Braid (piano) and Phil Nimmons (clarinet) improvised some wonderful, spontaneously-realized jazz compositions in front of an audience at Petro-Canada Hall in Newfoundland, Canada. David asked me to provide some images for the CD booklet, seven of which appear at the beginning of this video. The rest of the images also fit the overall theme of the sea that resonates throughout this wonderful recording of that evening's music.
David and Phil will be releasing the CD to the public soon (and it includes a small book of my eight images-- all printed on high quality paper); meanwhile, you can view some of my long exposure seascapes (quite a few that I have kept on my hard drive until now) while you listen to this wonderful, improvised interview between David's piano and Phil's clarinet.

Κάθαρσις | Catharsis IV – future memories
(catharsis = purification, renewal, reborn of the soul and spirit through art)
Metsovo, Pindus Mountains, Greece
One thing I discovered over the past few months is that I like to work in series. I like to have a subject and follow it over a period of time, trying to understand it and make a story out of it. I like to take moments and put them together in a sequence, try to find the relationships among them, to see their evolution and the way the idea I had in the beginning of the project grows in time. I was wondering these days why I don't have any architectural image to share. And the answer was somehow surprising. First (and this I already knew), I don't have enough time to concentrate as much as I wanted on an architectural subject. An architectural subject needs (in my opinion) much more commitment than a lot other subje... more »

Shadows and Light
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/shadows-and-light/
Some images take a few seconds to process, some a few hours, some days and some several months. This one falls in the latter category. Why? Well, I really like it a lot and I wanted the processing to be just right … this usually means that I process it from scratch various times, let it be for a while and come back later to see if it needs further tuning. It is not that I PhotoShop it to pieces (I don’t even use PhotoShop). It sometimes just takes time to find the right balance between tones, contrast and structure in various parts of the image. Gradually the differences between subsequent versions become smaller … luckily …
This T-shaped pier can be found in Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) near the small town of Morges. I shot this image at sunset after a heavy rainstorm. Some of you may remember my image... more »

Tufted Dreams
I’m back! After a week in the mountains with no internet I came home and promptly got a double ear infection. A trip to the hospital, a course of antibiotics and an unrelated cortisone shot later I am almost better. I think it’s time for me to do some catching up! :D
Some of you may remember this island and the duck story I told last time. I arrived at dawn to shoot the island and was surprised to find the water in front of it littered with sleeping ducks. They didn’t match my artistic vision, so I “took them out” with a long exposure and some creative editing. You can see that image here: http://goo.gl/Ea0h7 This time I decided to work with the dreaming, floating, feathered friends. Next time I’m bringing a wider lens. :)

Metsovo, Pindus Mountains, Greece
Today I'm in love !! :)
I hope you didn't forget me. :) I'm very little present at the moment, but that doesn't mean I don't like being here and I don't miss you all. It's just that I'm super busy at the moment and dealing with lots of things that need/demand my attention. Hope it's going to get better soon and that I'll have more time to come visit you all.
This is another image in my Catharsis series. Still winter images and no architecture from me and that's because I didn't have the time to seriously work on architecture. Working now on a couple of images, nothing ready yet, but they are coming soon.
Enjoy with chocolate!
