I took this photo on my birthday in 2007.

The smell of impending rain filled the air. A strong wind was blowing waves against the shore. I was on my knees looking through the camera viewfinder composing this shot when I heard a voice from high up on the the hiking trail behind me. "Hey man! Whatever you do, don't move! there is a bear right behind you!" The voice was faint and muffled by the wind and waves but there was a noticeable urgency in his tone. I didn't know who the person was yelling at. I slowly turned my head and looked over my left shoulder when I saw a black bear walking down the shoreline not ten feet from me. I froze. So I was just browsing my stream and noticed I had a post from David Beckham there. First of all I don't follow him and I have no interest in him. I then went to my account settings and noticed this new little checkbox "Occasional updates from people not in my circles". I suggest you uncheck this if you don't want to see such posts too!

About 14 years ago, I got a bad cold, and my voice became hoarse.  At the time I didn’t think much about it.  But my voice never fully recovered.  So I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis.  This is a nerve problem that causes your left vocal cord to not move properly.  Despite extensive examination, the doctors never identified a cause — though there was speculation of virus-based damage from my cold.  It is quite common in cases like these that a definitive cause is not found.

While this condition never really affected me — other than having a slightly weaker voice than normal which some people think sounded a little funny — it naturally raised questions in my mind about my second vocal cord.  But I was told that sequential paralysis of one vocal cord following another is extremely rare.

Also in other news I have noticed everyone on the commute to work reads fiction. This makes me sad. I was thinking: "We are surrounded by so much fiction in this world people have forgotten how to enjoy what is real" Pick up a science book and learn how cool stuff like this works instead, or some other topic if you wish - psychology, philosophy whatever, not just another novel.
