In 1986, stargazers was treated to a (mostly) once in a life-time celestial event, the emergence of the famous Halley's Comet. This comet makes an appearance in the inner solar system every 75 years -- making it one of the best short-period comets that can be seen with the unaided eye.
The comet has been recorded since 240 BCE, starting with the Chinese, followed by the medieval European astronomers and Babylonians. It wasn't until much later that comets were understood to be periodic. Thus, initially, individuals did not know that the many recordings were of the same comet, instead of several different ones. The nature of the Halley's comet was ultimately discerned by Edmond Halley in 1705, who was the first to predict when the comet wold return with accuracy. After which, like clockwork, Halley lit up the sky, with some 30 appearances in the inner solar system since then.
