Anti-Aging vs Healthy Aging

Anti-aging has a desperate, fear-based sound to it -- as if all aging is bad and must be halted.

Healthy aging is more nuanced. Just as when your eyesight becomes blurry, you get glasses to see better, healthy aging is a means to slow, or remove, the more unnecessary, negative events that can occur as we mature.

Healthy aging also includes celebrating and emphasizing the more positive aspects of getting older. After all, emotional aging is a natural part of the life experience. Each human life has its seasons (I mean, you couldn't pay me to be 23 again).  Healthy aging is the art of living more fully, a journey into increased authenticity and purpose.

But healthy aging is more than just an art — it’s a science. Scientific research is growing rapidly, proving new ways and creating new solutions for living healthy— len... more »

You have to admire a structure that makes even the oldest Egyptian pyramids seem new in comparison.  Gobekli Tepe's oldest parts are dated as 11,000 years old.

The oldest pyramid is 4,700 years old, and when humans were visiting and living at that new place we call Gobekli Tepe the Hebrews did not yet exist, nor did their god called Yahweh.  Now, that's old.

But, it still only shows us a snapshot of what was based on the bits that remain for our study and wonder.  Humans (or maybe Neanderthals, our extinct human brother species) were painting cave walls at Cave of El Castillo in present-day Spain 40,000 years ago.  Paintings in France's Chavet Cave are dated at 30,000 years ago, and Lascaux's brilliant and powerful images of Europe's mega-fauna (now mostly extinct) were painted by human hands over 17,000 years ago, when Rome was far off and overtime... more »

Avocados can improve your health
and help your skin look even better.

Ultra Marathoner Rich Roll has extolled the benefits of avocados as part of a health-improving diet:  “…PlantPower is not fat-free. Nor, in my opinion, should it be. Fat associated with the typical American diet is your enemy. But PlantPower fat, in modest amounts, is your friend. There’s this confusing business of EFAs — the essential fatty acids which must be obtained from food and are crucial to a wide array of bodily functions. And yet many people suffer from a deficiency caused by an imbalance of these crucial fats, which leads to unhealthy skin conditions. Reduce your omega-6 and increase your omega-3 intake.”

A well-rounded diet includes plant-based foods that are high in Omega-3 essential fatty acids, such as avocado! Here's how to slip more omega-3s into your daily diet andhelp yo... more »

Research has proven it: a healthy life has healthy relationships.

Reciprocal relationships increase your prosperity and improve your own health! Creating and growing healthy relationships might be one of the primary reasons we are on the planet (personally, I think of it as my spiritual purpose).

Good relationships can also help you stay committed to the healthy eating habits and workout plan that will transform your life -- whether it's a weekly walking buddy, a spouse who supports your self-improvement goals, or an online friend with whom you can laugh and share tips.

But what really makes a relationship healthy? How can we learn the communication skills and social talents needed to develop deep, satisfying and joyful relationships that also lead to a balanced, healthy lifestyle?

I find it helpful to think of friendship as a verb.

The Healing Power of Limes:

Since first learning about how fresh limes can help to heal lung tissue, I’ve been experimenting more with this cancer-fighting superfruit! It turns out, limes are actually pretty easy to slip into your weekly diet. They taste refreshing and delicious.

I’ve been squeezing half a lime into a glass of water in the morning (if that’s too intense for you, start with just 7 drops). If you drink a lot of tea and coffee in the mornings, you might enjoy lime’s alkalinizing effect (some times I feel a bit acidic after having tea of coffee in the morning, and lime water seems to help). Our family medical doctor suggested that trick.

Positive thoughts increase your chances of a positive outcome — this is especially true when it comes to getting fit after the age of 40.
“…I understood that any true or lasting lifestyle change
would require rigor, specificity, and accountability.
Vague notions of ‘eating better’
or maybe ‘going to the gym more often’
just weren’t going to work.
I needed an urgent and stringent plan.
I needed to draw a line in the sand”
~ Rich Roll, ultra marathoner, on getting fit after 40

If you happen to be over the age of 40 and are trying to get back into great shape know that, yes, it is challenging. But also know that, yes, it is very possible. People do it all the time. When you find yourself feeling skeptical (or frustrated because you find yourself slipping into old habits) the inner affirmation can be, “Iam in the process of becomi... more »

9 Ways to Be Fit After 40
(that you haven't heard before)
1. think about your spine, every day
Ask anyone who suffers from chronic back pain and they will tell you that they wished they'd realized sooner that it's a smart investment of time is to keep one's spine long, aligned and flexible.
2. find a better doctor
If your doctor isn't interested in your daily life or doesn't have time to listen carefully to your thoughts, feelings, and concerns, find one who does! Under 40, an annual physical is usually enough, but after 40, it can be helpful to go every 6 months, if only to get your blood and urine tested. Use the info from the lab results to fine-tune your self care and optimize your habits.
3. imagine waking up in the morning, 20 years from today
This visual exercise of picturing yourself two decades from this moment -- how... more »

Another ojek driver, Jakarta

Most motorbike taxi drivers in Jakarta are paying off their bikes in installments. Fares are low so they need to do quite a bit of business to make the payments and earn a living. And then they spend all day on polluted and overcrowded roads. It's not an easy or stress-free life. Yet many of them will smile and joke with a foreigner who's looking for an interesting photo. This guy just shone; a real character.

one of my favorite foods to have — in that snacking space that occurs in between lunch and dinner — is watermelon. Snapped this pic moments ago. By the way, watermelon contains citrulline, a nutrient that the human body converts into arginine — a blood vessel relaxer that enhances circulation. Therefore, many men find eating watermelon helpful before a workout, or lovemaking. Hey, I’m just sayin’! (comments welcomed on original post: http://goo.gl/zImTR )

Trivia:  What structure holds the record in amount of time as the tallest made by humans?

Yep, it's that big beauty in the picture.  Completed around 2560 BCE, the Great Pyramid in Giza, Egypt, was the tallest (146 meters, new)  for some 3,871 years until the completion in 1311 CE of the Lincoln Cathedral in England (160 meters at the tip of the steeple).

Bonus trivia:  The Great Pyramid reattained its status as tallest man-made thingamabob as various cathedrals fell or burned during the Middle and Renaissance Ages.  The pyramid gave up its claim for good (so far) in 1647 when time's erosion brought it to 139 meters, just below the height of Strasbourg Cathedral in France.

Extra bonus trivia:  The Great Pyramid at Giza is the only survivor among the Seven Great Wonders of the Ancient World.  The first to be built is the last to still stand.

This post by +Theresa Albert shocked me! (Don't read if you love French fries)

A recent study looked at what it takes to influence ordering habits. Was knowing the calorie count helpful? Was knowing how much exercise was required to burn it off helpful? The studiers took a group of similarly hungry people and gave them one of three menus. The first had no additional information, the second had total calories and the third had the amount of time walking it would take to burn off the food.

Those who knew the walking effort required to burn off their choices ordered 100 fewer calories. So, what is at play here? Is it that our general human laziness is a powerful driver? Or are we aware that our time constraints may prevent us from being able to make the physical effort required to compensate for our overconsumption of calories?

From today's workout. My friend Kevin (who snapped the pic) calls this "hollow man," but I've always called it "Capital V." It flattens and firms the abdominal muscles.  I also do it as an assessment exercise before an hour of stretching and flexibility movements, to determine what's tight that day. Will my arms glide behind my ears? Will my rib cage compress? Are my hamstrings loose enough to straighten my legs completely? It helps me decide what to focus on for the rest of the workout.
