AJ Durling294This is a bonus circle, and is actually pretty much where I started when I was creating my first circles - Top 500 PlussersIt is the people with the highest number of users - and is actually now only 308 people. When I first collected the Top 500 Plussers on Google+, I spend a lot of time weeding out the people whose posts in which I didn't particularly have an interest (e.g. almost all of the photographers - nothing against people who post photos to G+, it's just me: this is Google+, not Flickr; people who only ever promote themselves - so quite a lot of the pop musicians). The list that is left are people who, I think, actually contribute to the stream. You may find some surprising choices (Dolly Parton?! Actually, yes!). But I hope you enjoy it.I've kept the name Top 500 even though it is a lot fewer than 500. I like the irony... #circleshare   #sharedcircles   #celebrity   #topcircles  2012-10-19 15:06:56307302CC G+

Kyle Beck66So, I know a lot of my friends who have joined +Google+ wonder "What's the point? I have a Facebook." Well that comparison was flawed from the beginning, although many people made it while trying to describe G+. There are similarities, but one of my favorite features in G+ has been the ability to share Circles with others. In fact I'm not sure I would see the point if I hadn't been shared this very circle by +Robert Scoble (IIRC) early on in my G+ membership. It has proven an invaluable source of up-to-the-minute Tech News over the past year and really showed me how G+ is very different from FB.See, when you visit FB the information you receive is solely from your family and real-life acquaintances. This can be great for keeping up with people you don't see regularly, etc., but it is very hard to reach out to new people who share your interests through FB. Not so on G+. You can create and share groups of friends and pages (Circles) to organize your social interests. In effect, this creates dynamic communities where you can choose who you interact with.Anyways, I hope you will consider adding this Circle, packed full of Tech Enthusiasts. If you don't really use G+ or wonder what the point is, that goes double for you!2012-06-30 00:28:364881003CC G+

Now Evernote CEO Phil Libin has written a response on the Evernote Blog:

Listen up musicians:

Check out +Philip Kaplan's  new service DistroKid, which lets musicians quickly get their music on iTunes/Spotify/Amazon/Google Play. Unlimited song uploads for $20/year, and you keep all the royalties. You can upload songs whenever you want (you don't need to package them as an album), and they show up in the stores in 2-4 hours. It looks great and is already getting rave reviews from people involved in this business.

Yahoo! released their beautiful new weather app on Android! Congrats!
Of course the interwebs are OUTRAGE!  so I'm gonna talk about it...

Because I am hopelessly naive and idealistic I see this as an opportunity to talk about designing for Android, the role of guidelines and design consistency, innovation in design balanced against user expectations and consistency, and the "brand versus platform" issue.

So what's the big deal? Yahoo! made a beautiful app. It also happens to deviate in some ways from the Android Design Guidelines:
http://developer.android.com/design/index.html

Depending on who you are this is either "a brave and liberating stand for creative freedom, releasing Android from a stilted hegemony of cookie cutter designs," or "a horrifying violation of the one true design, confusing users to no end, and... more »

Much of the tech industry — Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, many others — is reportedly going to ask the NSA for more transparency, including allowing them to disclose how many requests for data each company receives.

Big thumbs up on this. Thanks to all involved — particularly those who demanded internally that it happen.

It's bad business if everyone distrusts the internet (and if the request counts are small enough, they'll help combat that), but I don't think this outweighs these companies' desire to do the right thing.

This won't (and should not) end the discussion, but it will hopefully lead to progress.

Today is my 7 year anniversary at Google. Hot damn! That's a long time. I've spent the entirety of my post-college life - a good 25% or so of my entire life to date - envisioning and building cool stuff at this company, surrounded by amazing people who help accomplish incredible things. I thought it might be cool to detail the big stuff that I've lived through these past 7 years at Google, an interesting history lesson for some.

When I started on the speech research team in 2006, it was a super tiny little team still on the cusp of achievement. When I would meet new people at Google, the usual response was "we have a speech team?!". Our small team was working hard on building out 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-GOOG-411: Google's 411 service), Google's first real speech recognition product delivered to users, and a starting point for so much more to come.

Unless there is something to factually dispute, I found Sean Parker's post (http://techcrunch.com/2013/06/27/weddings-used-to-be-sacred-and-other-lessons-about-internet-journalism/) defending his wedding and critiquing Internet journalism to be completely reasonable (and even funny at times). The ridicule he's received reminds me of the mean, make-fun-of-this-guy groupthink teenagers routinely engage in.

If I were a billionaire I'd probably have an elaborate fantasy wedding too. Because that's the point of becoming a billionaire. So you can do stuff that makes others mock and scoff but lets you live out your dreams. Obviously there's the potential for gluttony and selfishness, but it's possible to do it responsibly, and alongside significant amounts of philanthropy — both of which are checkboxes he appears to have checked. He earned it, let him spend it.

As a heavy Evernote user, I've been excited to see Google Keep in action. Google Now shows the potential of having multiple services interoperate, and Gmail/Drive/Keep could be a powerful combination. But Keep doesn't seem like it's really made for me (at least, not yet).

I write down a lot of notes (and save webpages, and record guitar riffs, and all sorts of other stuff), so support for an array of tagging/categories is a must. At this point Keep only allows you to color-code notes, effectively allowing for a mere eight categories. I'm pretty sure it'll get unwieldy as my note-count grows into the hundreds and beyond.

That said, at this point Google Keep is a solid product for what most people will probably use it for (basic notetaking, to-do lists, etc.). And it's only V1.

Anyone with a Nexus 10 — how's the experience using Pocket on it to read articles etc.? Is it too big to hold while reading for a long time, or just right?

(Nexus 7 screen resolution is too low for me to enjoy long periods of reading)

The Android team — or its OEM partners— badly needs to develop a powerful Android device that isn't so damn big. The Nexus One was a fantastic phone in part because it had a great form factor. Same with the iPhone. Some of us are willing to sacrifice screen size for a device that's easy to use one-handed (even with the Nexus 4 I'm doing thumb yoga).

Android is supposed to be about choice. How about giving us some?

Google Maps isn't just important because it's the best mapping app on iOS (and possibly ever, period). It's also going to piss off a lot of 'normal people' who are going to grow frustrated that iOS always tries to steer them toward the inferior Apple Maps whenever they click on a link in Email or on the web.

Before now the inability to change default apps has mostly impacted 'tech people', but Google Maps is so clearly superior and universally handy that it will reach a much broader market. I won't be surprised if we see news reports covering the issue and substantial backlash against Apple —  maybe even some murmuring from folks in congress.

Of course, with apps like Chrome and Gmail, Google would love if Apple changed its policy and let users change their default apps (I'm actually wondering whether this is why Google Maps is so good —because ... more »

We were surprised to read Alibaba Group's chief strategy officer Zeng Ming's quote "We want to be the Android of China" when in fact the Aliyun OS incorporates the Android runtime and was apparently derived from Android.

Based on our analysis of the apps available at http://apps.aliyun.com, the platform tries to, but does not succeed in being compatible.

It's easy to be Android compatible, the OHA supplies all the tools and details on how to do it.  Check out this blog post that explains how we think about compatibility and how it relates to the ecosystem we worked hard to build:

Google diluted the Nexus brand by releasing the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon.  The experience — shoddy battery life, long waits for updates (without any indication as to when we can expect Jelly Bean) — simply doesn't live up to what the 'Nexus' name should represent.

I wanted the Verizon Nexus as much as anyone, but it's clear that Google had to make too many concessions (e.g. letting Verizon control the updates) to make it happen.

Huge news: long-time Google exec +Marissa Mayer  is the new CEO of Yahoo. Congratulations to both her and Yahoo.

I interviewed Ms. Mayer a few times while I was at TechCrunch and she always came across as extremely bright and personable. Given her extensive product experience (she ran Google Search for a decade, and, more recently, Google's Local products), this may be exactly the shot in the arm Yahoo needs.

Google+ Local (that new icon on the left side of the screen) is really nice — I'm actually going to try using it as my go-to for local business info and reviews for at least the next couple of weeks.

Yelp may have more data but Google+ feels a lot cleaner and seems to do a better job giving you an overview of the top restaurants/businesses in your area. Also, thanks to the Zagat acquisition Google+ has lots of reviews for the places I've looked up.

Google Drive has some serious kinks to work out. In the time I've tried it, I've had it:

-Habitually crash Mac OS X's Finder (I think temporarily closing Dropbox may have fixed this, but it's too early to tell)
-Completely ignore thousands of files (I had to quit the Gdrive app then restart it before it recognized it had a lot of work to do...)
-Give me an error about being unable to sync my .gdoc files (which it created!)

Google+'s new sharing selector (All/Friends/Family/More) is really nice. The issue with Circles (and FB Lists) has always been the fact that they're a pain to set up, and even once that's done, they're a little bit scary to use — what if I accidentally share with the wrong group? With this, it's much harder to mess up.

I'd like it even more if there was a more obvious color code (make the entire box red if I'm sharing with the public, green if it's with family, etc.). I say red for public, because it makes it more likely that I'll pause and say, "Hey, do I really want to share this with everyone?".

Anyway, good job +Google+ team!

Update: To the folks saying this is just for choosing between who you see in your feed — that's true, but it also changes which circle a post gets shared to.

Great post by John Biggs on Google's Project Glass.

Below, a comment I left on the TC post:

Amen John.

Also, I really don't think these glasses are that pie-in-the-sky. Android phones can already do a lot of the stuff that was shown, so it's a matter of getting the user input via voice (and head movements?) right. The spoken commands in the video were all pretty straightforward — on par with the stuff you can already do via Android Voice Actions.

And if the navigation is done by tilting your head (seems like you tilt your head up a bit to access the menu, then look left and right to scroll), well, that seems pretty straightforward too given that the glasses will undoubtedly have an accelerometer and compass.

Here's to hoping it doesn't take too long til we see these in the wild.
