The villains in Game of Thrones have real rivals in Medieval Ireland!
http://timetravelireland.blogspot.ie/2013/06/rindoon-deserted-medieval-town-county.html
This picture shows the remains of the Norman Castle at Rindoon, Co. Roscommon.
Rindoon Castle is thought to date to 1227 and was constructed by Geoffrey de Marisco. It appears that Geoffrey de Marisco was a villain on a Game of Thrones level of nastiness. He was Justiciar of Ireland between 1215 and 1228, and took full advantage of the young King Henry III by being as corrupt in his dealings in Ireland as possible. He amassed huge swathes of land and a fortune by seizing goods, lands and taxes in the Kings name and then keeping the rewards for himself. He was eventually dismissed from office in 1228. He was even excommunicated for misappropriating funds from the Church (the money was just resting in ye olde account... more »

More Game of Thrones artwork - this time by Michael Komarck
http://www.komarckart.com/
After Episode 9, The Rains of Castamere of season 3, I decided instead of my usual read 1 book that went with the season, that I'd just read on. So I'm into A Dance with Dragons now, I should finish in the next day or so.
I think Martin did a fine job on world building - I can see the inspirations and what he borrowed from, but this comes from just being a student of history. If you're not then I imagine it seems quite wonderful and original. It isn't (sorry) but it's still a good job.
What he can do is write a ripping soap opera set in a cool epic fantasy setting. Because that is really all Game of Thrones is. There are sub plots for individual characters that have much better substance and arc but this is why it's such a magnificent TV show... more »

Ted Nasmith's 2011 Calendar for A Song of Ice and Fire
11 beautiful images of the places we love in A Song of Ice and Fire by George Martin. My particular favorites are Casterly Rock, Winterfell and The Eyrie -- he's very good at landscapes.
I left out The Twins because FUCK THE FREYS okay? Amirite?

P.S. Sorry if you have seen these before - since I've read the books (post to come about that, oh boy is there) I don't need to keep a lockdown on the story anymore. Oh hashtags: #got #gameofthrones

My grandmother was tall :) 5'11" (180 cm) and played Basketball for her school. I don't remember her talking about being Champs in 1934 - but here it is nonetheless! She is 15 here - the girl that's not looking at the Camera or the photographer.
She actually had a few of these in successive years, it seems that they were quite good :) I love the shoes!
Looking at this reminds of the scene in Dead Poet's Society where he brings out the boys to stare at all the old athletic team photos and whispers for them to Carpe Diem -- we take this for granted now, but that film really started what has eventually devolved into YOLO. Oh... that makes me sad, in a way.
For what it's worth, my children who are of the YOLO generation always knew it was originally Carpe Diem and never fell to the silly. I still roll my eyes when I... more »

Remember when the +1 button was blue? 8)
I know everyone doesn't read everything - but the people who do is who I am really talking to. I haven't covered this before but I've been wanting to talk about it for awhile actually!
I really just want to say that I do things a bit differently on my Google+ and that's fine with me. I don't follow any prescribed notions about the Internet and How You Use It™ because as far as I'm concerned, it's a tool for me to use how I please.
Anyway - this is really just a little note to all the people who deign to comment on my posts. How do I use the +1 button?
I have said for a long time now that I read every comment I get, on every post I've ever made. I really do. I never post and forget. To me, that is abominable behavior and I will not do it. It's so... stuck up and that'... more »

1931 - Parker's Beach. That's all that is written for this photo. I think it was friends that sent it to my grandmother. I'm not sure actually.
I love the cars and the clothes in the picture. I don' t know who any of the people are at all unfortunately as my grandmother didn't write it down.
For the "Read More" people:
For the past two years I've used Google+ almost daily and I've come to the conclusion that there aren't that many active users who post and engage on other people's posts. Don't you notice it? It's the same people, bopping around the same people's posts. It's like a big party, but it's really not that big. Admittedly I only circle about 600~ people (last I looked) and a lot of those are people that have been here since the very beginning. But it doesn't seem like much fresh blood is... more »

I don't have a lot of time today unfortunately but I wanted to throw something up. I sort of can't believe my grandmother wrote on this photo but she did. It's one of the only ones she did. It's a picture of her, she's the baby on the bottom right and her brother in the center.
I'm adding it to the album not for any particular beauty or anything, it's just the oldest one I have, dated at 1920. :)

I don't do a lot of photography of people. I'm not really sure why but I think it's because I'm just not that comfortable with making other people comfortable. LOL :) I never know what to say.
This is my daughter - who is 16 and suffers from that malaise that all 16 year olds suffer from; she thinks she's deficient in some way. Also, being quite perfectly 16, she won't listen to me when I tell her how beautiful she is. But not just her beauty - all her other amazing qualities. How she is kind, and gentle and sweet - while also being fiery and spunky, full of charm and wit. Oh, how bitingly witty she is. She has sass in nines and can make me laugh out loud with guffaws. She's awesome in every way. I just wish she could see herself as I do.

I'm a California girl - born and raised in Silicon Valley. I moved to the South back in 1995, so it's been almost 20 years here. There are things that I have embraced and now treasure about the American south and I have to tell you, I am proud that I've raised my children here.
My husband is from a small town here in North Carolina and he's the most decent, good, loving, wonderful person I've ever known, so say what you will, but in my heart and mind, the South can produce good people. Besides, my children are born and raised here. They don't have an accent (but can all do one, exceptionally well, haha!) but they are Southern to the bone.
I love Grits, oh my god, love them. Cheese grits, bacon grits, shrimp grits. Grits with gravy, grits with butter, even grits with coffee. It's one of the best foods ever! *But my absolute favorite has to be North... more »

I almost don't even know what to write here - except North Carolina haha! Oh man, I wish I was a bit braver taking photos of people just on the street. There were a lot of interesting characters in Lincolnton this afternoon. We rode up to the Kansas City BBQ competition that's held in Lincolnton every year called Hog Happenin and let me tell you, NC is serious about their BBQ.
We found some delicious Q and wandered around amongst good ol' country people. Republicans, maybe, but we don't need to talk politics while eating some good Q. I always feel like I fit right in, until I speak. I never did pick up a southern accent ;)

In my cleaning (well, moving stuff around) of the closet last night, I found some old photo albums that I didn't realize I had, or had forgotten I had. My father sent them to me -- I'm the new "archivist" even if I forgot I had them - they are safe in plastic bins at any rate. Haha! Besides, I think I hide stuff away so I can have the fun of "finding" them again.
I love everything about this photo. There was no date on it but I'm fairly certain it's from the early 20th century, possibly 1920-ish. My grandmother had so many photos that I'm thinking even for farmers they were quite well off. She never really said as much (she loved, instead, to wax on about living during the depression) but there is no way they were that broke spending all that money on developing film. Hah!
Anyway, this is my great grandfather on his farm.
