Mia Voss30,862It's a New Year! Let's jumpstart it with a Weekend Edition of @109324423871490315778 Power Chat.  Check out this amazing lineup of panel guests who will fill us in on what they think is the latest & greatest for 2015: @115620878851836664537 - Author, Speaker, Analyst. _I travel a lot. I surf the web even more. Over the last four years I've spent time in fifteen countries and three continents making airports and hotel rooms more of a constant, for me, than home. I also spend more hours, each day, online than most people would consider to be healthy. The one stability in all this is Google+ where I can be found, time allowing, on most days. It has become my anchor._ _In my posts, interviews and podcasts I add pieces to the puzzle. I explain how each one fits in a bigger picture. How that bigger picture then makes sense. Sensemaking changes everything._ _Before I got here, I used to be a corporate rat who used to be a journalist, before I jumped ship into full-time writing, speaking and blogging._ @115137076899523837053 - One of my favorite teenagers & aspiring DIY host. I rely on Kiragan to help me keep up with the cool kids!   Kiragan is an eighth grader and an aspiring You Tuber.  You can find her watching a season a day of Netflix when she is not playing basketball four days a week.  In the future she hopes to own her own business because she loves people and being her own boss. Her Instagram is the bomb.com and you should follow her!  http://instagram.com/kiragan_07 https://twitter.com/kiragan_07 YouTube: Kiragan Mercer @103158283130494425954: Rachel is pursuing concurrent Master's degrees in urban planning and information science at the University of Michigan, with the aspiration to design human-computer interactions at the urban scale. Specifically, Rachel is interested in designing how people will interact with emerging technologies -- such as drones, autonomous cars, and pervasive computing -- within the city, with an eye towards making sure these technologies promote positive human interactions and greater community engagement. She has previously worked at the Brookings Institution and the World Resources Institute, and holds BAs in English and environmental humanities from Stony Brook University.  @106628164966864339997 - @112784356967153325101 Zack Jones is a college dropout entrepreneur that is shooting to change the way we define housing. When he decided to quit his academic career and his day job to pursue a new path as a business owner, he had no idea where his tiny idea was going to take him. Fast forward three years to now and Zack has brought his idea off the napkin and into the most demanding phase of a new business, the startup. Aside from being obsessed with tiny houses, Zack is passionate about creating learning pathways that are uniquely tailored to each individual persons needs and excited to chat about how starting tiny is a promising first step to something so much larger! The Codebreakers178@117270149460674807194 tackle the latest incarnation(s) of  the *_Princess Paradigm_* this *Wednesday, Dec. 10th at 10a Mountain / 9a Pacific / 12p Eastern.*  As with many Disney films, Frozen is the story of princesses who live in a world dramatically different from ours. They face hard times, but survive them with pluck and good humor....and the inevitably perfect hair ;-) The emblematic song _"Let It Go"_ has gotten close to a cumulative _1 billion_ YouTube views (over several versions) and let's not even mention the multitude of merchandise that is coming out "just in time for the holidays." *Clearly, there's something here that resonates with tons of people.* _But what is it?_ Does our desire for happily ever after, rainbows and unicorns, and pretty pink castles help things go viral? Is this because women are making most of the buying decisions, or because today's parents have a hard time saying "no" in general? Is it harmless and fun, or has the fight for equality between the sexes been undermined by this tradition? *Join us as we discuss the Princess Paradigm and what makes it a viral force to reckon with in our culture.* Mobile:  YouTube:  Google+:  Meet the #CodeBreakers : (In alphabetical order)   @102000982871890720967  Super Power -> Communication @113426828273677356184   Super Powers-> Strategist, Visibility Control, Protector of Lawns @110414588049062912447  Super Power -> Humor, Wordsmith   @112697555988864915254  Super Power -> Engagement, Funnies and Gamification  @101146817884405744944  Super Power -> Psychology and Psychometrics  @116135963476096063106     Super Power -> Philosophical and Sociological Analysis  @104641199698156385999  Super Power -> Engagement, Creativity, and Misspelling  G+: http://goo.gl/G6Nrj5  @113690073826160821557  Super Power -> Data Analysis  @104683923092143784953  Super-Powers -> Perception, Vision-creation +*Michael Sutton* Super Power -> Entrepreneurship   @114630301405242981651  Super Power -> Rule-breaking!  @104267556228949747305  Super Power -> The Number Whisperer #PandemicCode  Are we "Frozen" in the Princess Paradigm?2014-12-10 18:00:0033
martin shervington959,069You know I spend most of my time on Google+, right? Well, increasingly I've been valuing the role of using Twitter alongside - the cross platform connections make a huge difference to building relationships. So, I thought you all may like to dig a little deeper and there is no one better to ask in than @108947920975167979671 on this one as he is just bringing out a new edition to his book. He has a solid business view of social as well. So, hope to see you on Wednesday; and we will be taking questions so please ask away! About the book: The book was initially created to solve a problem. The most common question am I asked is, "Can you help me understand Twitter?"  That is just not something that can be addressed over a cup of coffee! So I wrote this book, first to help my students, but it caught on has loyal fans all around the world.  The Tao of Twitter teaches you the practical MINDSET for success, not just a bunch of theoretical or technical suggestions. If you follow the strategy in the book, I know it can work for you because I have seen it impact hundreds of lives. The Tao of Twitter is beyond a book. It's a movement. Welcome to a global community that is unleashing the power of this amazing communication platform to connect to the world and drive new business benefits in wonderful and unexpected ways! The Tao of Twitter! SEOWiSE944*Framing and Agenda Setting: Defining how we see the world* This is an episode of _The Paradigm Shift_ you won't want to miss. _Why?_ Because framing defines the way we see our world. It defines the way we further communicate and the way we do business. *Note: If you decide to share this or comment in other platforms...* Please use the hashtag #Paradigmshiftweb . That way we can track it (paradigm shift alone has been used way too much for us to keep track). *Agenda setting and framing* I will explain how the two are inextricably intertwined and really why they are so crucial to understanding the rest of communication. Though generally spoken of in terms of political communication and the news, it needs to be understood that we cannot communicate without framing and agenda setting. *In terms of business* I'm sure you can already see how this is applicable to doing business today, but @115620878851836664537 will take it one step further and explain how framing and semantics are intertwined, and how _that_ changes the way we do business. If we better understand the frames in which we live and the frames in which others view the world, can we be more successful in the digital age? Further, are we less likely to get stuck in our own agenda or worse, an agenda set by others? Tune in Thursday July 17th for what I think will be an incredible discussion! *Warning:* I have already been asked to extend this particular episode so David and I agreed that this conversation may go for 45 minutes rather than the originally planned half hour. *Start loading in your thoughts and questions now!* Thank you @115091224082668507135 for the awesome graphics!Framing: Whose Semantic Frame Are You Living In?2014-07-17 18:00:0060

SEOWiSE944*The Paradigm Shift* _The Business of Communicating in a Semantic Web_ *New:* We're trying to track activity so if you share this event anywhere else please add #paradigmshift ! I am thrilled to announce my newest show with @115620878851836664537. Through our interactions on his brilliant @110793088683846123648, David and I have developed clear connections between communication concepts I regularly use in Communication Studies and the new Semantic Web that businesses are learning to function in. *The show break down* _In a half hour David and I will..._ I will briefly explain a communication concept. For our first show we are starting really basic. *I will explain the two-step flow of communication:* Its history, the basic model and components within that model, and how we generally study it within communication. David will then take the concept of the two-step flow of communication and apply it to his expertise: Business today. *David will explain how the two-step flow of communication functions within the semantic web and why its important for businesses to consider.* Finally, we will address any questions that you all raise for us, so bring your thinking caps! A big thank you to @115091224082668507135 for the banner! The Paradigm Shift - The Business of Communicating in a Semantic Web2014-06-19 18:00:0089

Electronic Frontier Foundation2,157,041We're live on Google Hangouts! Watch the digital teach-in here: http://youtu.be/yb1sYK8aGGI Submit questions via Twitter using the hashtag #404Day   On April 4th, EFF is partnering with the Center for Civic Media at MIT and the National Coalition Against Censorship to bring attention to the long-standing problem of Internet censorship in public libraries and schools for 404 Day. Join us on Friday, April 4th from 12pm-1pm PST for a digital teach-in with some of the top researchers and librarians working to analyze and push back against the use of Internet filters on library computers. Mark your calendars, and check back soon for more information about how you can tune-in. Speakers: Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Deputy Director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom. Chris Peterson, a research affiliate at the Center for Civic Media at the MIT Media Lab. Sarah Houghton, Director for the San Rafael Public Library in Northern California. Moderator: April Glaser, activist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation We also invite librarians and concerned bloggers across the country to blog about Internet filtering in libraries on 404 Day to raise awareness and share stories of free speech infringing censorship in schools and libraries. Want to blog about it? Write an email to april@eff.org to let us know. About Children's Internet Protection Act & Censorship in Libraries Over 10 years ago, Congress passed the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), a bill that brought new levels of Internet censorship to libraries across the country. The law is supposed to encourage public libraries and schools to filter child pornography and obscene or “harmful to minors” images from the library’s Internet connection in exchange for continued federal funding. Unfortunately, aggressive interpretations of this law have resulted in extensive and unnecessary censorship in our cherished public libraries, often because libraries go beyond the legal requirements of CIPA when implementing content filters. As a result, students and library patrons across the country are routinely and unnecessarily blocked from accessing constitutionally protected websites.404 Day: A Day of Action Against Censorship in Libraries2014-04-04 21:00:0067

Electronic Frontier Foundation2,157,041We invite you to join us for a live Google Hangout on Tuesday October 1st at 2 PM Pacific / 5 PM Eastern to learn more about the TPP's copyright provisions and their impact on users, their effect on U.S. copyright law, and how we can work together to protect our access to knowledge, digital rights, and internet freedom. There will also be time for Q & A. Even though we successfully killed SOPA and ACTA, special interests groups continue to pour millions of lobbying dollars to push policies that would further restrict our rights to knowledge. Unable to pass such measures through our legislative process, they’re using secretive, non-democratic tactics to fold harsher copyright restrictions and enforcement measures into a larger trade agreement. The latest and biggest threat on this front is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a multinational trade agreement being negotiated between the United States and 11 other Asia-Pacific countries. Speakers: * Lori Wallach: Director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch * Krista Cox, Staff attorney at Knowledge Ecology International (KEI) * Maira Sutton, Global Policy Analyst at EFF * Parker Higgins, Activist at EFFTPP, Copyright, and Users' Rights: Google Hangout with EFF, KEI, and Public Citizen2013-10-01 23:00:00105

Susanne Ramharter77,537Am Freitag, dem 16.8. kommt +Michael Lee Johnson nach Wien. Michael unternimmt soeben dabei wildes (wahnsinniges?)

Reinventors Network804,187Here's a really hard problem that Larry Lessig is not sure how to solve: "Let's assume we've got a fundamentally corrupt government, in the precise sense that the dependence upon "funders" corrupts the intended dependence upon "the people alone," and that too many within that system are too deeply connected to it to push for its change. That means any effective movement for change has got to come from the outside. How would a grassroots movement in the Internet Age create the pressure such a change would require? How would the people who brought the Internet to scale tackle this problem?" Joining Larry in his effort is a veritable who's who of internet know-how, the folks who have built & scaled networks for change: internet pioneer Tim O'Reilly, Change.org Founder Ben Rattray, Moveon.org Executive Director Anna Galland, VC Brad Burnham, Executive Producer of TED Media June Cohen, Bram Cohen, creator of BitTorrent, and Markos Moulitsas, Founder of Daily Kos. Reinvent Money in Politics2013-07-11 20:00:00193

My Korean mother is pretty good at cooking - she once owned a pop-up noodle shop in Busan, South Korea.  My American mother keeps it basic.  It's shown me that passion for cooking is really something you're born with - even if you have no idea what's on the ingredient list. My food will be easy, cheap to make, and fun to eat... it will also have a twist of the Midwest, since I tend to pass on anything too fishy. We'll be cooking easy and inexpensive Korean food!                                     ************************** On Sunday's show, Michelle will be making *Mandu Two Ways* - (*Mandoo*) She’ll be making fried dumplings and dumpling soup.  It’s the perfect Korean comfort food to start off the wintry New Year!  Here is the recipe: http://bit.ly/S7hvOn *Watch Michelle LIVE on this Event's page, on +Larry Fournillier's Profile Page* or on www.hangoutnetworks.com  #hoa   #hangoutsonair   #michellelikoreankitchen   #koreanrecipes  Michelle Li's Korean Kitchen - Mandu : Episode 01 - 6:00PM(EST)2013-01-07 00:30:0059

Susanne Ramharter77,537Sundays are for #commoogling  - that is where we meet in hangouts, get to know each other a bit more personally, discuss our lives, goals, business, whatever.  The idea is to foster the comunity and get to know what we each can offer or need, so that we can be of support to each other. Bring coffee or tea, a croissant or carrot and a _good mood_ so we call all #treadlightly  ;-)Join us in a *Commoogle Hangout*2012-10-28 12:00:0014
European Photo153,498Come join +European Photo  #EuropeanPhoto  and +Charles Lupica +Janusz Brakoniecki +Jean-Louis LAURENCE +Manuella Betaille +Manuel Votta +Michael Muraz and +Susanne Ramharter for our first event.  Please tag your images with #EuropeanAutumn  and #EuropeanPhotography  - no other tag is needed but you can mention one or more curators if you like. This event is for sharing images that say "autumn in Europe" or "Autumn festival".  In Europe many of the biggest festivals of the year take place in September, October, and Novemeber.  In September and October there are many "harvest festivals" such as the Fete des Vendanges in Neuchatel Switzerlland or perhaps you went to the Octoberfest in Germany?  Both Europa Parc and Disneyland Paris put on extensive Halloween themes.  So this weekend, Friday to Sunday, pleass join our event and share with us your images of autumn in Europe.  We would especially like to see images that show autumn in classic European cites or landscapes, like this image of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lavaux, Switzerland. Susanne Ramharter77,537Twice a year the museums in Vienna remain open until 1:00 AM, with a single ticket costing 13€ you can visit all participating Museums between 18:00 and 01:00.  I think it would be fun to share the evening with other Google+  Art-Fans who are in Vienna on the 6th. I plan to start the evening at the Albertina, from there I am open to suggestions. Let's plan the event 'On Air' and let those who can't join us in person participate virtually.Vienna: Lange Nacht der Museen - Long Night of Museums2012-10-06 18:30:0014

+Russell Brand makes a great case for Systemic Change

As Albert Einstein said: _We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.*

The people making decisions today, whether in corporations or in politics, do not wake up in the morning and say to their reflection in the bathroom mirror "Today I will do something evil" (well, most of them don't).  Instead, like all of us, they are caught up in their own 'systems', or contexts, whether that is the need to appease shareholders, meet impossible deadlines, or get the votes.

Only by making true Systemic Change, will the context for the actors change and thus (hopefully), lead to better decisions.

Enough with the whining, everyday needs a bit of kick-ass spirit to get the juices flowing, and no one does that better than Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.
May they always have such vital energy.

Are you a snob?
Admittedly, I am. Let's be honest, this picture sucks. It was taken with my tablet on a very touristy river dinner cruise in Saigon last night. The ship was full of about 100 tourists from all over the world, most of whom were busy taking pictures of each other, and with themselves and the traditionally dressed musicians. The Russians brought their own vodka.

My snobbish self was unhappy with the whole performance. And then I just watched the people. Regardless of the whole theatricality, they were having fun. So I let go of my conceptions, and just enjoyed the ride. Even talked (kind of) with the Russians who had so irritated me in the beginning, and they were just people like me.
Just another lesson in treading lightly

Ps: photo taken with tablet, it's bad, but the moon above the lit building was too great a temptation.

Good Night Vietnam
If you counted 3 people on this motorbike (one of the millions of 125ccm machines on the roads here), then you would be wrong. Can you find Waldo? He's the little one in the very front. Finding whole families on bikes is nothing unusual here. In fact, it's probably the form of travel for the majority of families. Cars are unaffordable for most people and at least in the cities, the bikes are both more flexible and faster than cars.
It only gets tedious when they seem to be driving through your hotel room through most of the night, because, like most parts of Asia, the horn is an absolutely essential instrument when driving.
More on that later.

Good Morning Vietnam!
(I've always wanted a reason to say that)
On our 7th morning here, we finally got to see the sun. This lovely small traditional boat is 'parked' in the river in front of our hotel, to be enjoyed from the balconies in our rooms, or on the restaurant terrace. .....
And enjoy we did, as I hope your day is also a good one.

Google made my Foto 'auto awesome', not sure if I agree
Anyway, it does simplify the choice of which to post. Rooftops in Hanoi this morning, clouds create a flat light, which does nothing to diminish the fascination.
Because property costs are so high, many, if not most private houses are only one room wide. But, as can be seen, they make do creatively.
Create your own comfortable space and tread lightly

Many, many thanks to all of you who sent me such kind wishes yesterday. Though I've tried to respond at least with plusses, I'm sure I missed one or the other message and I apologize for that.

But here I will share with you a picture of my present, a fabulous 5-colour woodcut by our artist friend Wolfgang Tambour.  Wolfgang is a truly astounding artist, whose work has gone through many stages and I've loved them all.

Ah, those heartwarming, (in)sincere brand commercials...
Honestly now, how often have you felt warm and fuzzy after seeing a commercial using some of the buzzwords or scenes shown in the clip below?

But, most of the time, it's really a case of the brand playing Bulls**t Bingo with your emotions. True purpose and values of an enterprise are never to be found in official statements, commercials or even social media posts.

To see what a brand is really about means to watch what they do. How do they treat their customers, employees and environment? Are they involved in spurious litigation?

In other words, to they walk the talk?  If they don't, then no amount of happy-posts or syrupy commercials will make them 'good'.

English Summary:
+derStandard.at is probably the best newspaper in Austria. Unfortunately, yesterday's edition included the article below, which is an unapologetic piece extolling the virtues of Investor-State-Dispute-Settlements, in which an foreign investor can sue a government.
What the newspaper failed to mention is that, the authors of the article are employees of the arguably largest and most profitable organizations that often represent the claimants, earning literally billions of dollars in fees from such claims.
My point is that to present such a piece without mentioning this, and thus creating a proper context for the opinions stated by the authors, is not worthy of a respectable newspaper.

☆Good Morning Google+ ☆ your daily story about art: 01.19
Last week was the Green Hour, today let’s look at the Witching Hour, generally understood to be the time after midnight and before the beginning of dawn.  Chinese Medicine views the time between 1 AM and 3 AM as the time of the Liver, which stands not only for (de-)toxification, but also for emotions, especially frustrations and anger, as well as spring, with all of it’s associations of rebirth and growth.

Here is a representation of the Witching Hour in a painting by Andrew Wyeth, the American realist painter. As the painting seemingly shows, Wyeth was a realist painter, but is that really true?

Abstraction in visual art is usually understood to mean that a work of art is ‘free’ of conventional elements such as perspective, recognizable objects and, most importantly, narrative. We usually associate abstraction with artists such as the cubists, Mondrian, Pollock, etc.

But if we look past the obvious visual elements to the idea of abstraction as something that is devoid of narrative, which can apply to recognizable things as well, we can definitely understand Wyeth’s self-assessment as an abstract artist:

“You can have the technique and paint the object, it’s what’s inside you, the way you translate the object — and that’s pure emotion. I think most people get to my work through the back door. They’re attracted by the realism and sense the emotion and the abstraction — and eventually, I hope, they get their own powerful emotion.”

In my opinion, his “Witching Hour” is a perfect  example of this. We see an empty room at night. Only the strange fluttering of the candles’ flames (while the windows are closed?) give a hint that something unusual is happening. Is it a draft from an open door, and if so, why is the door open, who opened it at this hour?

Like most of Wyeth’s paintings, as there is no obvious narrative or story to be seen, we are free, almost challenged, to make up our own. To make our own associations, based on our own lives and histories. And that is a core element of abstraction, isn't it?

So if, like me, you've been waking up around 2 AM lately, these are some things to ponder as you wait for sleep to come again, but do tread lightly with yourself!

Have you ever wondered what all that unnatural green in paintings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries is about? From Van Gogh to Picasso, we see green shadows, green faces, and as here in a painting by Viktor Oliva, a green ghost?!

Here is my own theory: it’s at least in part due to an alcoholic drink called Absinthe. While many compare Absinthe to Arak, or the Greek Ouzo, Absinthe also includes the herb Wormwood, which may (or may not) have hallucinogenic properties.  But why green? Because the main form of Absinthe is green (from the wormwood).

Absinthe became popular in France after the 1840’s, when it had been administered to French troops in Algeria to treat malaria. It was fairly cheap and quickly became very popular in cafes and bistros, so that 5 PM became known as the “greenhour”.  Dur... more »

Absinthe became popular in France after the 1840’s, when it had been administered to French troops in Algeria to treat malaria. It was fairly cheap and quickly became very popular in cafes and bistros, so that 5 PM became known as the “green hour”.  During the 1880’s a shortage of wine due to a disease infecting French vineyards, Absinthe became even more popular.

Another name for Absinthe is still The Green Fairy, which may be the woman in this painting, called the Absinthe Drinker. As other paintings of Absinthe drinkers by Degas, Manet and even Picasso show, Absinthe seems to have been the ‘drug of choice’ for many artists in the Fin de Siècle, particularly in France. But not only painters like Van Gogh, Oliva, Degas, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec, and others were fans of the green fairy, writers such as Oscar Wilde, and even Hemingway indulged and claimed to have found inspiration. The British occultist Aleister Crowley was an ardent worshiper of the ‘Green Goddess’.

But things came to an end in the early 20th century, when temperance and abstinence from alcohol (prohibition anyone?), as well a a case of triple murder in Switzerland due to an Absinthe caused drunken rage led to the banning of Absinthe in most European Countries and the US.

So, I maintain that the preponderance of green in faces of the many paintings of the time, particularly of the Fauvists, could well have been references to Absinthe.

I suggest you stick to softer stuff and do tread lightly

Today I bring you a glimpse of the wonderful new Exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC. It is an exhibition of many masterpieces from the Rennaisance and Baroque with the Virgin Mary as subject.

The Virgin Mary has fascinated artists from the very beginning, her life, her role as mother of the Christian Savior, as well as that of model for femininity has made her one of the most popular subjects in Art History.

If you can, see the show, if not, do check the site at the link to see many magnificent works of art.

Have a wonderful day and tread lightly

And before this descends into all kinds of political discussions:

Today is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a Catholic Holiday that is celebrated in many countries, such as Austria. This has nothing whatsoever to do with today's artwork, a woodcut of the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755, by an anonymous artist, shown below. However, apart from the fact that the image is fascinating, strangely modern in its execution, there is a (tenuous) link between a Catholic holiday and the subject of the work, which I am shamelessly utilizing.

The Earthquake of Lisbon occurred on November 1st in 1755. November the 1st is also a traditional Catholic Holiday, All Saints Day.  It occurred in a wealthy, strongly Catholic city and country with strong cosmopolitan elements, after all,  at that time the harbor of Lisbon was a kind of gateway to the rest of the world for Europe. So the horrific effects of this earthquake, with anywhere between 20.000 and 50.000 deaths, fires destroying much of the city as well as a tsunami that killed just about all life at the harbor were noted throughout Europe.

While there have been all kinds of unbelievable natural catastrophes all throughout history, what makes this one stand out until today is the effect it had on European (i.e. Western) thought and philosophy, especially as it pertains to the concept of Evil. Until the Age of Enlightenment, Leibnitz's idea of this being the "Best of All Possible Worlds", in which sin (moral evil) was linked to suffering (natural evil such as disasters) had reigned supreme.

But this natural disaster caused the destruction of so many lives on All Saints Day no less, and destroyed most of the Churches while leaving the red-light district virtually untouched. The explanations of theologians that it must have been punishment for sin were no longer acceptable. A number of philosophers, writers such as Voltaire and Rousseau opposed the idea of this being just punishment for anything. And so was born a new foundation for the explanation of evil, but that's a story for another day.

Finally: it is both amusing and frustrating to see that the ideas about evil which were rejected more than 200 years ago are making a comeback now - just think of all those "Aids is a punishment for..." and "natural disasters are sign of the End Times" instead of climate change, that ever more people (want to?) believe.

Enjoy a disaster free day and tread lightly

(or not ;-)  But the context probably shifted your perceptions, maybe there were suddenly feelings of disgust?

And yet.... and yet.... as we see, even toxic sludge has beauty, it's just a matter of how we look at it and what meaning we, ourselves, ascribe to the image.

Whatever. Be open to beauty, especially in unexpected places and tread lightly

I feel a little bad about doing such a job on Thomas Cole in yesterday’s post. He was actually a quite respected artist and one of the founders of the Hudson River School of landscape art.

So I went looking at his landscapes and many of them are wonderful. I had pretty much decided to post his Distant View of Niagara Falls, which is a very conventional, well done, expected treatment of the subject and has gravitas.

But oh, the Gods had something else in mind, because
A) I realized that Cole actually imbued almost all of his paintings with the unexpected, often as allegory or allusion to another subject, and

A) I realized that Cole actually imbued almost all of his paintings with the unexpected, often as allegory or allusion to another subject, and
B) This one, his ”Expulsion. Moon and Firelight” caught my eye.

My first thought on seeing a small rendering of the painting was that it reminded me of the journey to Mordor, which seemed amusing (yes, I’m shallow). But taking a closer look shows that this is not just a trivial portent of things to come in Hobbit-land, but rather an interesting allegory about the Expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.

Interestingly, the two main figures don’t even appear in the painting. The focus is on presenting the before and after. On the right hand side, we see Eden, a lovely, peaceful looking landscape bathed in gentle sunlight. Then comes a stone arch, filled with fire, and the rest of the painting shows the ‘after’, the world outside of Eden. Doom and gloom abounds.

What fascinates me is the fact that there are four distinct sources of light in this painting: the sun on the right in Eden, the fire in the arch, the red globe on top of the evil looking mountain in the center background, and the moon (?) above the water on the left.  Still, the whole thing works. The composition is sophisticated enough that both the perspectives of the different levels and the shadows from the light sources work amazingly well.

Whatever the first impression, this is definitely a work that demands not only superficial attention but respect. Another example that snap judgments are so often wrong.

Take your time assessing things today, and tread lightly

We had just been talking about the often times somewhat staid American paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries when we found this painting. It was painted in 1840 by Cole for the Architect Ithiel Town (as the engraving on the column says). Unfortunately, Town hated it and refused delivery. It remained in Cole’s family until the Museum bought it in 1949.

The reason Town hated it, is the same one that we loved it - it’s simply crazy! Cole thought to show the progression of human achievements in Architecture through history. We see an Egyptian Pyramid and Temple, Greek Temples topped by Roman Aqueducts, a Gothic Cathedral, multitudes of people like out of a Cecil B. DeMille film, and, in front of it all, the Artist himself, lying on a plinth on top of a Greek Column. How absurd, how dramatic, how wonderful.

We must have stood in front of this painting for about 3 minutes, just sucking in the gloriously absurd details and, …. Yes… laughing.  I later learned from a man in the museum shop that it is one of the most popular paintings in the museum. But, when I asked whether people liked it because they thought it was funny he said no, because they thought it was pretty.  Oh well.

Make up your own mind about it, and tread lightly

My point is made in the title, as Joni Mitchell sang in Big Yellow Taxi: you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone …

But is that really true?

Of course not. On some level, we are always aware of what we’ve got. We are aware of our possessions, position and status, relationships and even our bodies and their functions. But we take most of these things for granted, they are normal, always there, not consciously noticed, …. until we lose them.

In a way, we stumble through life blindly. Blind to our surroundings, oblivious of what matters to the people around us, and unaware even or ourselves, our bodies and minds, their functioning and needs.

We hustle through the days to make that next goal, get the sale, meet the deadline, write the post, or buy the next cool thing. And we ignore the clouds lit by the sun on the commute to/from work, the co-worker who is overwhelmed with a task, the significant other who needs to get something of their chest, the child that wants to play, and our bodies that need rest, or exercise, or to be touched.

We are always focused on the next thing to do, to make, or to get, and so little aware of how and what is now.

The one-word antidote to this is mindfulness. For those who feel that is a bit too woo-woo, replace it with the word awareness.  To be fully aware in and of the moment. To note what we see by actively looking, what we hear by actively listening, noting the taste, smell, and feeling what is right now.

Turning off our busy minds is not easy, to just ‘be’ is a bit like asking someone to be spontaneous.  But I find it useful to, just for a moment, focus on ’wanting nothing’. Really. Don’t try to achieve anything, not even awareness, just focus on not wanting anything and you may just notice how your body feels, as well as your surroundings, and you may just be surprised.

Is this somewhat trite? Of course it is. There is nothing metaphysical or requiring great intelligence about being aware. The message is many thousands of years old and transmitted in many religions as well as in modern psychology. I’m not blazing new trails here.

But the thing is: what seems simplistic to grasp intellectually is often very difficult to put into practice. As the Buddhists say many things are ‘simple but not easy’.

So, when you talk today, be a little bit aware of your voice, how it sounds, how it feels.  Do you speak loudly or softly, are you smiling as you speak, or are your teeth clenched, you get the idea.

It’s your voice, appreciate it, use it wisely, and tread lightly

Today we remember the Venetian painter Bernardo Bellotto, better known as Canaletto, who died on Octoer 17th in 1780.  This painting, his View of Vienna seen from the Belvedere, is typical of his style and work.

We see a ‘wide angle’ view of the city, with a deep horizon, in cool colors and with sharp precision. The use of strong diagonals captures the interest and keeps the scene from becoming boring. Canaletto presents his views as if on a stage, but one where the scenery is of primary, and the actors of secondary importance.

Even most of the buildings shown here can still be seen, because thankfully, Vienna has strict zoning laws about the height of buildings within the city center.

Have a wonderful day, find something to preserve for yourself, and tread lightly

If someone hands you garbage ...
Probably tl/dr
In the last weeks I met a number of wonderful people (patients) in a hospital. They were there for many different reasons. We would meet around the ashtray in the garden (yes, I know!) and share not only the hidden location of the coffee automaton, but also personal stories. It is fascinating how such a context will completely change the rules of intimacy among strangers, but that is a story for another day.

One day another patient was very upset about something another patient had done and I shared this story with her:

A very renowned and respected Buddhist teacher gave a talk about the usual things: compassion, non-violence (even in thoughts and speech), etc.  After the talk, a few people went up to him and said that it was all very well for him to preach compassion, he was a well respected figure and was surrounded by... more »

After the talk, a few people went up to him and said that it was all very well for him to preach compassion, he was a well respected figure and was surrounded by devoted followers, not slimy co-workers, bullies, nasty bosses, etc. How could they be expected to apply his teachings? His answer was (as so often with Buddhist teachers) incredibly simple: he asked them, If someone tries to hand you a bag of shit garbage, and you don't take it, who has it then?

Now I heard this story almost 10 years ago and loved it ... with my brain. It has taken almost as long to actually live it fairly regularly. It's always one thing to know something cognitively, and actually live it, isn't it ;-)
Edit: thanks to +Bodhipaksa Dharmacari for the link to the original story here: http://goo.gl/Yeexh

Imagine my surprise when the story made the rounds. It seems that the image of someone actually handing over physical garbage while they make nasty, aggressive or hurtful remarks (sometimes unknowingly) helped these people to to realize that they were letting others determine their own reactions and thus the rest of the conversation - if there even was one.

The fact is, everything a person presents has to do primarily with ... themselves, not with their conversational partner.

It was interesting to hear various stories and (attempt to) help analyze how they often instinctively accepted and dealt with the garbage bags that were tossed to them in various situations. Ironically, and without intending to, I actually provided an example one day:

We were sitting in the lovely garden under glorious sunshine (would that August had been so) and a woman who had been strolling with her friend almost stormed up to me and said "you're wearing a neck-brace!" I said "yes". Quite unnecessarily, she said "I have one too. And mine is much better" (mine is the standard you get in the hospital). I was somewhat amused and responded that she was fortunate to which she replied that it had been custom made for her by some man named Siggi.  By now I was hard put not to laugh, could not suppress a grin and asked her if it was her aim to make me jealous. She just repeated that hers was better and not the simple standard.

To be fair, later on she came back when I was alone and volunteered her room number, and told me she would be taking it off and I was welcome to try it on so that maybe I could convince Siggi to make one for me as well.

Now, yes, this was a tiny little baggy of garbage, not a big sack. But, nevertheless, initially it was garbage. My friends were very irritated at her rudeness and amazed that I did not "get into it" with her. But really, why bother? I'm OK with my brace and am happy that she is fine with hers. If she needed to point out that hers was custom made then that was her thing, and had nothing to do with me whatsoever.

In the following days the story of the garbage bags was often a topic of discussion and I believe that it may have been of some use to the people I met. If it is of use to you as well, that would make me happy, if not, then maybe you've already "gotten it" and that is fine as well.

So do tread lightly around the garbage, even if it's your own.

Being the irreverent, postmodern person I am, and not infused with the proper medieval spirituality to appreciate this as it was surely meant, I was struck with the absurdity of the situation. Here is the dead Farinata, the Florentine leader of the Ghibellines, who had dealt defeat to the Guelph ancestors or Dante, insulting Dante .... and Dante lets himself get involved in trading furious insults and arguments!

I mean really! Who cares if a ghost insults my ancestors? If there is an issue, let the fight it out among themselves in the otherworld. But it can never affect me.

Farinata was obviously still completely caught up in his very worldly beliefs and hatreds and made a gift of his own issues to Dante, who gladly accepted and then all hell broke loose. What if Dante had just ignored it? But that story comes later today, until then,

may you differentiate between which issues are your's - and which are not, and tread lightly

Your "what a surprise" post for the day
There are people who simply do not participate in any kind of activity without the proper gear and costume. I am at the other end of the spectrum, old t-shirts, jeans or an old pair of shorts are my standard for everything from yard work, bicycle or motorcycle riding, yoga, cross-country skiing, etc. I've even been caught chasing balls on our tennis court in the linen sun dress I happened to be wearing at the time.

So I'm always very impressed and slightly embarrassed by all those people with the (semi-)professional outfits - but obviously not enough to actually do anything about it. How nice to know that not all of the expensive clothing and gear is used to actually practice: ;-)

Haring is probably more similar to Rizzi than Warhol is, which comes as no surprise since, as Rizzi said, Haring was one of his idols - as was Warhol, Paul Klee and Bugs Bunny. But while Haring's work has an element of aggression - all those clearly outlined, active figures in stark surrounings, Rizzi's work shows the lighter, fun influence of Bugs Bunny as well.

His work is full of light, humor and, yes, "good will". He spent most of his life in NYC, and his work shows different aspects of the city, but always the positive sides. The spirit of multiculturalism, art, chaos and the fascination with the many, many inhabitants. If nothing else, his work is a wonderful testament to what a city can be.

It is no wonder that one of his favorite maxims was “The past is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift.“ and that is the perfect summation of a Sunday.

Make the most of your gift today, and tread lightly.

As balance to yesterday's doom and gloom, today's painting is the Drama of Light, by the American artist Hanson Puthuff, who was born on August 21st in 1875.

Like many American artists, Puthoff began his career as a commercial artist, producing signs, posters and even illustrations for billboards, before resigning to concentrate on his own work in 1926. He is best known for his landscapes, mostly of California and the western US.

That was the opening paragraph of my post from last year (here: http://goo.gl/hAaksF ) and it fits perfectly again today. The weather is once again grey, cool and rather gloomy, with the added element of fog. Just as my brain has been full of fog for the last weeks (or, as Denny Crane would call it 'mad-cow' ;-)

Kubin's painting Ahnung is a perfect way to re-animate this series of posts. Not only does it capture the mood of the day, but also the atmosphere of the last weeks.  'Ahnung' is one of those German words with many meanings, it can mean an idea, suspicion, feeling, or sense about something else, but, as with the painting, there is no certain knowledge, nothing is clear, only a fuzzy sensing of what could, maybe be present.

Make sure your day has some light and clarity, and tread lightly

Here we have his painting of the Immaculate Conception. At first glance, one has to ask, what does this have to do with the story as we know it. Fact is, during Vasari's lifetime in the 16th century, there was not yet a codex or rules of iconography as to how this 'event' was to be portrayed. It was left up to the artist to display his own ideas (or those of his patron) about the Immaculate Conception.

Vasari chose not to try and show the event itself, but rather it's meaning. We see the Virgin, floating in the sky, surrounded by Cherubim (yes, these are Cherubim, not Putti), everything is sweet and light. But oh, down below. There are Adam and Eve, along with other evil-doers, in the murky, dark and writhing shadows, chained to the tree, from which rises the serpent. A serpent with a human torso, dark wings, and horns. Incidentally, the Virgin's foot is on his forehead, showing her dominance. The two angels on either side of her hold an inscription, the translation of which reads: Those condemned by the sin of Eve are saved by the grace of Mary.

And there you have it, Woman as cause of both the Fall and the Redemption of Man. A theme of polarization that shows up again and again in Art. <sigh>

Have a day with less drama than this painting does, and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.29
Today we remember one of the most tortured, and one of the most marvelous artists ever, Vincent van Gogh, who died on July 29th in 1890.

Instead of trying to come up with original thoughts, I'll share this post from his birthday.

Have a great day and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 03.30
Today is the birthday of one of my favorite artists, Vincent van Gogh, who was born on March 30th in 1853.

There are over 7 million entries under his name to be found on Google, and over one million with the word "biography" added.  There is nothing that I could conceivably add to the mountains of information available about Van Gogh, whose untimely death at the age of only 37 deprived the world of such a magnificent artist.

What can one even try to say about an artist who created psychological masterpieces like the Potato Eaters, grandiose visions of the cosmos such as Starry Night, and could make views of  Tree Roots or a Patch of Grass so fascinating?

I won't even try.

Just one tip, as you go through these paintings, you may want to pay attention to what this man can do with yellow, the different shades, energies and meanings that he elicits from what we just call yellow.

Enjoy the pictures, have a lovely Sunday and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.28
We begin the week by celebrating the birthday of one of Art's premier Bad Boys, Marcel Duchamp, the French artist who was born on July 28th in 1887.

Duchamp cared nothing for established forms or theories of art. He is probably the artist who helped to develop the idea of conceptual art, and thus moving far, far away from accepted academic practices. One could say that, with Duchamp, art took a major step away from the primarily visual and narrative context, an moved into a much more intellectual one. (Whether we like it, or not)

But here is one of his more 'conservative' pieces, from his time and experiments with cubism, called King and Queen Surrounded by Swift Nudes.

May your day be full of energy, just this painting is, and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.27
Yesterday's weather was perfect for taking a field trip. We drove to the small village of Metnitz in Carinthia and had a look at their Dance of Death Museum
The museum (tiny) shows the original panels of a Dance of Death, or Danse Macabre, which was on the charnel house of the church, and are dated to about 1500AD. These photos are of the reconstructions on the charnel house itself, which were completed in 1989.

The concept of the Danse Macabre, came from Catholicism. The earliest known example is from the Cemetary of the Church of the Holy Innocents in Paris, completed around 1424-25. The concept of the Danse Macabre, came from Catholicism. The earliest known example is from the Cemetary of the Church of the Holy Innocents in Paris, completed around 1424-25. The Dance of Death became a popular theme in religious art, in part because of the very real existential threats to life such as repeated famines, the Hundred Years War, and the Black Plague, which ravaged Europe  in the 14th Century, causing between 75 and 200 Million deaths.

The theme of the Dance of Death was communicated via plays (like the early mystery plays), poetry and paintings.  The point of these works was in part to combat vanity, by showing that death ultimately comes to everyone, whether they are rich or poor, strong or weak.

That is why these panels show Death coming to claim all kinds of different people, the Pope, the Emperor, Knights, Ladies, Farmers, Craftsmen etc. Below the scenes are texts, in which Death has a short dialogue with each person, who resignedly accept their fates.

Our fate was to get caught in an absolute downpour on our way home, but at least we were in the car and not on the motorcycle.

Hope both your weather and your day is friendly, and tread lightly

Architecture as a form of Art
What a marvelous contrast to all of the straight edged, boring industrialized ceilings in modern buildings.
The image makes you want to run your hands over it, much like a good piece of sculpture.

Wonderful example of Passion at work
+Jason Joseph , one of the first people I 'met' on a hangout, has realized his dream and talks about it on this wonderful talk at TEDx.
It really makes my day to see people I 'know' here achieve success in their endeavors.

I've Been Waiting To Share This With You ALL For a LONG Time! It is THE Single Most Important Thing I've Ever Undertaken, and I Hope You Will LOVE It!

What you are about too see is a culmination of my entire life. Not simply my life's work, but its purpose.
Much is explained in the video you are about to see, which is a +TEDx Talk I was #blessed   to be invited to give in #Manhattan at +TEDxFultonStreet  on the very same stage that Inside The Actors Studio is filmed. ( A pretty rad experience to hang in the same green room that everyone from Martin Scorsese to Julia Roberts spent time in at one point or another. (I may or may not have sorta turned that room into my own private Green-room, as it wasn't actually being used... But hey.. I was about to step on the world stage of TEDx ...and I needed a lil meditation time.. a lil me time. :p

But the place isn't important, the only thing of importance is that this video and the work you are about to see is the culmination of a life long dream

I mean that in no small way.. literally a lifelong dream, for when I was a little kid we..my friends and I would sit around after being blown away by Elvis, KISS, and other things and people... scientists...inventors, all of which made us say WOW! We would fantasize about how we too could make other people feel something amazing when we grew up!

I've always wanted to move people at their core, to illicit change, foster understanding and compassion, and to do so through something I've been in love with since I can remember! Photography. But it had to be something unique.. something undeniably 'WOW" Something worthy of paying 'homage' to all those who'd gone before me and made things that made me say that one magical word..."wow!"

I finally figured out a way to do so....and to do so by taking the things I love most in life: sharing, expression, and music and by combining them with my greatest love of all: photography, I'd finally create something that has never been done before.. something that would celebrate not only music and photography but would celebrate the amazing feelings, the incredible possibilities, the joy, the sheer evaporation of feelings of loneliness or being misunderstood that can only be realized through the art of sharing.

The Video Explains it Mostly... But There is More Id Like YOU to Know:

The premise is simple... photograph people who've achieved great things, celebrities from all walks of life, musicians, actors, inventors, scientists, athletes... and ask them to share ONE song they are absolutely passionate about, perhaps it got them through cancer ( Id like to stop right here to simply say #FUC %CANCER ) or perhaps its the song that pressed them on through the toughest of times, or the song they finally launched their career to.. maybe this song was playing in the background.. maybe its a song that reminds them of a simple time..
We sit down, and talk about it for a few moments.. then.. the magic happens. We both strap on headphones, and we listen to it together, as I photograph them.

As I'm photographing them, I have a second camera in sync with the first one, that is pointed at the CD player... it is recording each time I make an image of the subject. The times-tamp from the song ( photographed with that second camera) then becomes the title of the image, along with the subjects name, and title of the song.  This will allow the viewer to connect to the exact moment that the image was made.. the exact instance the emotion struck home. And to connect in a way never before done, and hopefully in a manner that feels special.. magical.. and .. truly makes the person feel a part of whats being shared.

This is an important project for me, because in trying to make it come together... and here I feel its the perfect time to give a hardy heart felt show of appreciation for Guns N Rose*s very own... the venerable incredible.. sheer virtuoso of a musical genius.. and I say that with no small amount of exaggeration.. +Ron Thal A.K.A *"Bumblefoot" , without whose understanding and sheer tireless devotion to the day of shooting.. and his belief in me.. this would never have happened.. and I may have easily given up. Much love brother. Much love!

It is an important project for me.. because I want kids to understand.. someone out there gets it.. they may have been there too.. or hey.. they may just share the same goofy passion for an odd song. I want people to feel connected.. to one another.. to art.. to music..

We are after-all, all juts vibrations of energy. And music.. is a vibration of sound, photography a vibration of light. SO is it ANY surprise how powerful a change we can experience.. when we share these vibrations? It's through this sharing.. through this #SixBeatsOfSeparation   ... that I hope to bring people together to vibrate at a frequency that makes us all realize, how truly in harmony..we.. as human beings can, should and were absolutely BORN.. TO be.

Three is much more to come...and Ill need your help and support!!!
If I've moved you...intrigued you...or entertained you...I ask you to please...spread the word.

Coming this summer will be a website where stories of these shoots will be fully documented, videos and photographs will live.. people will write in their own stories about music and how its moved them.. and MOST importantly..
Prints and posters will be available for purchase. Which I'm very proud to say will be provided through the amazingly skilled people at NYC's own +Fine Print NYC! Who have partnered up with me as they believe in the project, and being the awesome New Yorkers they are have helped me bring this to fruition!
Each one sold.. will have its proceeded donated to the charity of each celebrity subjects choice...and that is the greatest gift of all!

I can NOT wait to share this journey with you all and am SO SO happy to have the opportunity to have you here TO share with!

Namaste

Six Beats of Separation and I... Jason Joseph..
Thank you!

XOXO

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.25
Today we celebrate the birthday of the American artist Maxfield Parrish, who was born on July 25th in 1870.  This is his Dream Castle in the Sky, painted in 1908, about 10 years after Mucha painted his Seasons. While the style is different, we can still recognize the influence of Art Nouveau, in the romanticized treatment.

Sorry for being so short, a bout with the dentist this morning has left me a bit woozy, but, for Information about Parrish, see the post from last year here: http://goo.gl/ri1xxQ

Have a wonderful day, watch your mouth ;-)  and tread lightly
