Our Future Society: Interdependence

"Social emerges out of interaction, individual agency, inference, information, insights & interdependence."
-- John Kellden

Work is a subset of Play
"The secret message communicated to most young people today by the society around them is that they are not needed, that the society will run itself quite nicely until they - at some distant point in the future - will take over the reigns. Yet the fact is that the society is not running itself nicely... because the rest of us need all the energy, brains, imagination and talent that young people can bring to bear down on our difficulties. For society to attempt to solve its desperate problems without the full participation of even very young people is imbecile."

As a neuroscientist, practice fascinates me because it is all about establishing pathways in the brain. Social Business Design: The Village Square

"Social platforms can be turned into anything we want."

Gossip or Ashram? Why not both?
From where I sit, social platforms can be turned into anything we want. They can be village squares, filled with hustle and bustle and gossip, they can be Viennese Cafés, and they can be ashrams.

What color your archetype?
They also serve many different functions, PLE: personal learning environments, personal brand building platforms, tribe gatherings, booths for flogging our products and services.

The elusive, confusing charm of our Social Era
They are also impacting our traditional  institutions as they adapt to an increasingly connected world.

Contradictions, Inversions, Oddities, Coincidences

"By making these maps interactive we can allow the user to project different slices of the data into this 7-dimensional space and in doing so the user can analyze very complex data landscapes from multiple perspectives. If we make manipulating the data in the multi-dimensional space easy, the user can have a conversation with the data.
We are in essence trying to recreate with algorithms and maps the intuitive response that an expert has to the patterns they see on a chessboard. It’s a way for the computer to calculate the shapes, and to let the human do the strategic thinking.

Resources: Google Apps

+Steve Waters :
There are two qualifications for Google Apps in Education, Google Analytics and Google Adwords: Qualified Individual and Certified Trainer. The former is gained by a number of rigorous and timed exams. The latter is achieved by an equally rigorous combination of assessment and evidence of the use of Apps in Business. There are less than 10 Certified Trainers in the UK. There is a list available - Google it!  As far as I can tell, there is nothing to prevent someone running a course on, for example, Google Apps in Education provided that you make it clear what Google qualifications you have and that you don't use Google badging anywhere."

FREEZING LEMONS - WHO KNEW

Amazing frozen lemons. All it is.....is a frozen lemon.

Many professionals in restaurants and eateries are using or consuming the entire lemon and nothing is wasted. How can you use the whole lemon without waste?

Simple.. place the washed lemon in the freezer section of your
refrigerator. Once the lemon is frozen, get your grater, and shred
the whole lemon (no need to peel it) and sprinkle it on top of your
foods.

Sprinkle it to your vegetable salad, ice cream, soup, cereals,
noodles, spaghetti sauce, rice, sushi, fish dishes, whisky.... the
list is endless.

All of the foods will unexpectedly have a wonderful taste, something that you may have never tasted before. Most likely, you only think of lemon juice and vitamin C. Not anymore.

Now that you've learned this lemon secret, you can use... more »

Zen of Small Tasks: Capture, Reflection, Well-being

By capturing our experiences and then reflecting upon them, we improve our well-being. You can almost describe this as the positive side of digital media addiction.

Echoes from the past:
-  how technology mediated reflection improves well-being

As people document more of their lives online, some recent systems are encouraging people to later revisit those recordings, a practice we’re calling technology-mediated reflection (TMR). Since we know that unmediated reflection benefits psychological well-being, we explored whether and how TMR affects well-being. We built Echo, a smartphone application for recording everyday experiences and reflecting on them later. We conducted three system deployments with 44 users who generated over 12,000 recordings and reflections. We found that TMR improves well-beingas... more »

Google+ : The Tablet and Smartphone Edition

To tell you the truth, I was a bit lost at first. Were is everything? Then a deeper calmer voice inside me:
John, breathe. Just try to put a post in, and take it from there.
Which I did. Now, a couple of posts later, I'm seriosly liking the new UI and UX.  Even the four lines text minimalism can be reframed as a creative constraint for a gasbag like me.

When you're on someone's profile page, and you click a #hashtag  on one of their posts, you should first see all the posts with that same hashtag from that person.

For example, when I'm looking on +Thomas Morffew's page, and I click on a #contentmarketing  tag, I should be able to quickly browse through all his posts about that topic. Once I'm done with all those (or if there aren't any), then show me posts from other people.

This would be incredibly useful and it would encourage more rapid adoption, I think. It would also get us a bit closer to +Jeff Sayre's "channels" idea. (https://plus.google.com/u/0/112526081195315983895/posts/bCJuCAMZcQM)

+Chris Messina, perhaps you all already thought of this and rejected the idea for some reason I'm not seeing. I think it'd be super cool though.

The New Vertical Awesomeness of Google+

Are you also enjoying the portrait-orientation in the new column layout?  I love it.  I also love the multiple columns... I'm able to see a lot more photos at once -- so convenient and fun!  Did any of you switch back to the one-column view?   I see +Tom Anderson also likes the vertical orientation and he just posted one of my favorite photos ever!  I talked about this with +Thomas Hawk too in person -- he's also a big fan of this orientation.

This photo is of the Aurora Australis in New Zealand.  People ask if it is multiple photos... nope, just one exposure, but yes, post-processing was involved, unapologetically.

My first Garbologie lead

Some of you will be aware that I am in the process of launching a new waste business called Garbologie. It will develop into a network of specialised waste processing businesses, starting with mattress dismantling.

Well, in some exciting news, I got my first enquiry to supply Garbologie with mattresses and I haven't even done any advertising yet! None. Not a peep from me. What I have done is my announcement here, in my blog, on FB and twitter that the business is coming.

Yep, that's right. I was contacted by a large local landfill wanting me to take their mattresses (several thousand per year). How did they find me? Google! All of this work in blogging, building a presence in G+, Facebook, Twitter. Worth it.

Building a cloud of authenticity and chatter is not just fun, but it also pays.

And then, in asep... more »

Collaborative Sensemaking: Wicked Problems

Six-dimensional Dynamic Framework
"Social emerges out of interaction, individual agency, inference, information, insights & interdependence."
-- +John Kellden

Wicked Problem
"It is hard to say what the problem is, to define it clearly or to tell where it stops and starts. There is no “right” way to view the problem, no definitive formulation. There are many stakeholders, all with their own frames, which they tend to see as exclusively correct. Ask what the problem is and you will get a different answer from each. Someone can always say that the problem is just a symptom of another problem and that someone will not be wrong. The problem is inter-connected to a lot of other problems; pulling them apart is almost impossible. In a word: it’s a mess.

But it gets worse. Everywicked... more »
