EARTH 1.0 SPACE MUSEUM
In honor of #internationalmuseumday here is a look at a future museum. Traditionally, International Museum Day is organised around 18 May. It can last a day, a weekend or a whole week, the objective being to meet at the museum with the motto: “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples”.
Each year, IMD gathers more museums from all around the world. In 2012, 32,000 museums from 129 countries on five continents participated in the event.

The Stream
The whole idea of calling something a stream was to evoke movement. While I'm quickly adapting to some new things here, the idea of manually reloading the page, in a word, sucks.
I enjoyed seeing my stream flow. Wouldn't it be nice if we were given an option with this? My buddy +Branden Haize pointed this out to me and I thought about it overnight. The last time around, I was venting quite a bit. This time, I'm standing back and taking in the lay of the land a bit before jumping in. Getting older...! :P
This is one minor thing that I'd like that option on.
Thoughts on this point, or on anything related to the new look of the UI?

Edna Mode: One Righteous Fashion Designer
This quote says it all. How many of us have friends and family who live in the past, constantly rehashing what was instead of what can be? It's common, but EM sees right through all of that. She seriously needs her own spin-off flick from The Incredibles.
Edna "E" Mode (voiced by Brad Bird) is an eccentric fashion designer who designs the costumes for many members of the superhero community. To that end, not only does she take the aesthetics of the clothes into account, but also their practical uses such as protective qualities and accommodation to the powers of the wearer.

Simon & Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy in New York
The Only Living Boy in New York" is a song written by Paul Simon and performed by Simon and Garfunkel. It is the eighth track from the American pop duo's fifth and final studio album, Bridge Over Troubled Water. The song was also issued as the B-Side to the duo's "Cecilia" single.
Simon wrote this as a thinly-veiled message to Art Garfunkel, referring to a specific incident where Garfunkel went to Mexico to act in the film Catch-22. Simon was left alone in New York writing songs for Bridge over Troubled Water, hence the lonely feelings of "The Only Living Boy In New York." Simon refers to Garfunkel in the song as Tom, referring to their early days when they were called Tom and Jerry, and encourages him to "let your honesty shine...like it shines on me". Hi. My name is Heather and I'm a bibliophile.
I love new technology...like, really, REALLY love it. But when it comes to books, I keep it old school. No newfangled eReaders here.. Nope. For me, it's PAPER ONLY.
I love the feel of a new book, cracking the spine, turning a page, underlining a phrase or word, making notes in the margin. I love spending time in a bookstore, getting lost in the aisles, going on a treasure hunt for my next great read. It's not just shopping...to me it's a form of church. I even love the smell of books - whether new off the shelf or musty from too much time spent in the attic, books just plain smell good! (yes, I'm that weirdo who secretly sniffs books. Don't judge.) ;)

Traveling To San Francisco: 29 June - 3 July 2013
If you live in the Bay Area, or are going to be visiting San Francisco at this time, we should meet! I'm trying to schedule some mini-HIRLs if possible, at least one dinner out on one of my nights with some bar hopping perhaps. Maybe a bookstore + museum tour during the day, or just taking in all the great SF flavors of all the fantastic neighborhoods!
I really hope to meet up with my Google friends in Mountain View. (+Elliot Polokoff +Alina Kim +Susanna Kohly Jacobson +Yonatan Zunger can we arrange a meet?) I'll bring +Carter Gibson and +Tiffany Henry along and that'll make a great day!

Living The Huckleberry Finn Life
As a young boy in the USA, we all grew up reading grand adventure tales, and none were ever as popular or ingrained into our psyche as Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
We were allowed to dream of great adventures and exploring the world away from our parents - of hitting the road on our own and experiencing life firsthand. We wanted to be like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn (or at least die trying)! We wanted that escape away from our suburban lives (some of us). Mark Twain used language that wasn't formal, like so many other books we read. It was familiar, and colloquial (and as kids, we liked that daring approach).

Benjamin Franklin’s Phonetic Alphabet
Benjamin Franklin was many things. Politician, scientist, inventor, printer author, he was a visionary whose ideas helped shape America. But he also had some notions that, while founded on sound logic and pragmatism, seem quite bizarre in retrospect. For instance, there’s his suggestion that the turkey was a more appropriate national symbol than the eagle, which he saw as “a bird of bad moral character.” Franklin’s vision for American didn’t stop with independence and iconography.
He also proposed a redesigned alphabet – a new language for a new nation.

Courage
I had one of those long days (Monday's are by far my busiest at work) and I found myself falling immediately to sleep when I got home. Lights out, just like that. When I woke, and jumped on Google+, the first post I saw was from +Ryan Van Sickle and it was all about needing to find courage.

I reminded him that I think, as an independent musician, he has more courage than anyone I know. We've known each other a long time (in G+ years :-)) and I know that he constantly is working on his career, and is always focused on making great music. He is the epitome of courage in my book. Surround Yourself With People Who Are Your Kind of Crazy
Since the day I started on Google+, back in June of 2011, I've always felt this. I kept stumbling on the most remarkably crazy people; people I probably subconsciously (and consciously) have always sought out my entire life. New worlds opened up for me here, and I began to experience a freedom I had never experienced before. A freedom to be myself, to talk with people who shared my interests, and it has never stopped being a grand journey for me. Not once!

A Soldier's Mother's Day
On each Mother's Day, I always want to remember Mom's who's sons and daughters are serving in the military, all over the world. On this day, I know it must be especially hard for them, but I want them to know that they are being thought of.
With all the recent heralded military action in war-torn countries around the world, the timing seems perfect to share a special mother's day tribute penned through the eyes of a soldier who served his country well, oh so many years ago as a member of Fargo's 164th Infantry Co. B National Guard unit serving in Guadalcanal during World War II.

The Disney company has unearthed a 1956 time-capsule containing a letter from Walt Disney to the future, on stationary bearing the legend "NO AGREEMENT WILL BE BINDING ON THIS CORPORATION UNLESS IN WRITING AND SIGNED BY AN OFFICER." Yaku. You'll remember that word if you have the chance to see the film También la lluvia (Even The Rain). As I usually do, I was flipping channels and stumbled on this interesting and beautiful film. It fascinated me all the way to the end, but it is not a film that moves fast. It's not done with a Hollywood flair. It has many moments of sheer brilliance and emotional beauty, but many uneasy scenes as well. Really, this film is about survival of a people. Water is at it's core, and without water, we perish. I talked about the importance of water in April quite a bit as I advocated for #worldwaterday2013 and boom, it shows up as a central theme in this movie. Complete serendipity.

Building the Treehouse of Our Dreams
I'm staring out the window on a gloomy, muggy day, looking out at huge trees in my yard. My mind wanders and I start to see the treehouses of my dreams as a kid. Remember those elaborate treehouses we created in our heads - the ones that would serve as our fort and home base? Our retreat from our parents and the rest of the world? Some kids had really grand ideas for their treehouses; other kids treehouses were simply cool, in their own, simple way.
What would (or did) your treehouse look like?
I'm always curious to see the variety in kids' imaginations, and this is one area where many of us went all-out with grand designs!

A Major Day in the History of the United States: The Completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10th, 1869
On this day in 1869, the presidents of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads meet in Promontory, Utah, and drive a ceremonial last spike into a rail line that connects their railroads. This made transcontinental railroad travel possible for the first time in U.S. history. Let's Go All The Way by Sly Fox

Sly Fox was a short-lived 1980s pop duo consisting of Gary "Mudbone" Cooper, an African-American funk session musician and former vocalist with Parliament-Funkadelic, and Michael Camacho, a Puerto Rican-accented vocalist.
The duo was assembled by British producer Ted Currier and presented as wholesome, clean living teen idols, an image that contrasted sharply with the perceived sexual connotation of the title of their lone hit.
The group's sole album Let's Go All the Way was released on Capitol Records in 1985, and the title track "Let's Go All the Way" became a Top 10 hit in both the U.S. and UK the following year. The First FNS Dance Party Is Taking Over the World Tomorrow Night!
While we've had a Disco night before on +FRIDAY NIGHT SESSIONS (thanks for that suggestion, +Pam Adger!), we haven't yet had a night of great dance music! This will be a first! Think of all the great nights you went clubbing, or went to those insane college keggers; think of all those times you gathered with hordes of people, and of the powerful feeling that room had when an entire group of people moved to the same music. Tomorrow night, the show is entirely about those great times we remember. Those nights when you let lose, those nights when you got dressed up to hit the town. Whatever band or musician made you MOVE to the beat! It doesn't matter the era or type of music - but it IS all about moving ... and dancing!

VE (Victory in Europe) DAY
I was a bit late this year getting this post up, yet I'm astonished at how little coverage there is of this monumental event in history, here and on the web. Life for all citizens of the world changed on this day, 68 years ago. Nothing would ever be the same again. It truly was a world war.
In Times Square, over 1 million people turned out to celebrate the end of the war, and it was an insane celebration of joy and exuberance.
On this day in 1945, both Great Britain and the United States celebrate Victory in Europe Day. Cities in both nations, as well as formerly occupied cities in Western Europe, put out flags and banners, rejoicing in the defeat of the Nazi war machine.

A Les Misérables Medley - One Man Orchestra!
"After watching the musical and the movie, I fell in love with the emotional and powerful songs found in Les Misérables. Working off the orchestral score (sorry no arrangement this time!), I transcribed nearly every part to be played on violin, viola, and piano. Today I’m going to try to explain the real reason that barns are painted red: nuclear fusion. And yes, this is an excuse to take a mad ride around some of the stranger corners of physics and chemistry in order to give you the real, this-is-not-BS, answer to a simple question.
