Lean On Me

I took this over a year ago when I was still living in Chicago (that's the Willis Tower in the background). This was also the first time I ever photographed people. It was cool. I wasn't very good at it, but I do enjoy the shapes these dancers made with their bodies. Sexiness!

Lost

Last night I took +Brian Matiash up the coast to photograph this cool 'ship' wreck. The last time I was here, there wasn't enough water to capture any reflections, so I was pretty jazzed about this scene. So, I hopped into the water (with my wellies on) and got all set-up...then Brian decided to stand right in my shot. Instead of telling him to bugger off, I thought it made the shot even more interesting, so we made this one. It's my favourite of the night.

Up until now, I've only shared cell phone snaps from our recent honeymoon adventure down to St John in the US Virgin Islands. Well, this is my favorite shot that I grabbed with my SLR while we were there!

After an awesome dinner with Laura at the Sugar Mill located in the Caneel Bay resort, during which we had a great view of the storm brewing by the bay, we made our way down to the water for a drink and to grab a few images.

It looks like a couple were have a great dinner on the beach as this show was starting to erupt! Luckily, the lightning nor the rain ever came close enough to put a damper on our night.

BTW: I won top score in the illustrative category last night in the print comp at PPGBA with this image!

Spin Me Around, Babe

Giving Google's Auto Awesome _motion_feature another test tonight. This time I'm using 5 star trails shots from Yosemite National Park - each shot was a 5-minute exposure taken under the light of the moon.... it was wickedly beautiful. You're looking at Upper Yosemite Falls here :)

WOO..Google+ knocks it out of the park

I was stuck in meetings all day, peeking at my phone when I could to get a hint of the changes we were all anticipating from G+. I'm honestly completely thrilled by everything that's happened. I have already forgotten what the old stream layout looked like. I love how easy it is for me to see the amazing content that packs the G+ halls. I also love how my own page looks.  

The one thing I was dying to get home and try out is the Auto Awesome function, showcased earlier by +Brian Matiash. As I don't have any DSLR images to plug into the Motion feature, I decided to test it out with some +GoPro timelapse images from the SF sunset last weekend. Ok, these are GoPro images so the quality isn't great but the functionality in G+ is pretty fast, super user-friendly, and c'mon...it's a little bit of genius. Can't waitt... more »

Patience is a Virtue

This is the only time I've been to Death Valley and it was the first time I met +Colby Brown. We met up for sunrise on the dunes and then he took me to these salt flats. Sweet salt flats, by the way. We waited, and waited, and waited...nothing. The sunset looked to be a wash out. As we started thinking about leaving, all of a sudden these colors erupted... to this day it's one of the most wonderful cloud formation sunsets I've seen. Sometimes you just have to wait and be patient, and good things will come.

Out of nowhere...I see you

Yesterday, oh yesterday. It was beautiful. I was hoping for sunset, so the dog and I went to the East Bay shore for a long walk. If you know anything about the SF Bay Area, you'll know that we have an incredible diversity of micr-climates. When I left my home it was bright sunshine and 85 degrees. 15 miles West it was 62 degrees and there was nothing but fog. The visibility was about 50ft (if that). So, I decided to walk without my gear but to leave my GoPro get-up on the rocks by my car on time-lapse (just in case). Well, just in case happened about 1.5 miles later when the fog started to break, the clouds began rolling and swirling, and I bolted back to the car to grab my gear. What a magical moment. Just me, my pooch, and this. These are the moments I live for.

Thanks to all Mum's out there who celebrate their kids, no matter what

This is a big shout out to all the Mum's who love and accept their kids no matter what...and encourage their quirkiness. My own Mother has stuck with me though the rough and the smooth, and there's been a lot of rough. When I told her I was different, she hugged me and loved me anyway. She said "I just want you to be happy". This is how all Mothers should be with their children. Throwing an enormously massive hug over the US and Atlantic to my Mama this Mother's Day. Sierra Negra

It's hard to believe it's almost a year since I was in this magical place. One day I'll go back and will spend more time in this specific part of the Galapagos, Isabela Island. Such a gorgeous, peaceful place that's full of natural wonder and magnificence. In the distance is the Sierra Negra Volcano. In the foreground is lava rock. Pretty sweet!

The way light shoots through the water is quite astonishing. It's like those amazing sun rays you see bursting through clouds only 10 times more fabulous. It's magical, really. With the great conditions we had on Friday in Carmel, I got really lucky and saw this cool sunburst through the kelp canopy above me. I was at a depth of around 35ft when I took this photo.

Hidden Forest

I took the day off work yesterday to do some diving in the Point Lobos National Reserve. It's a hot spot on the Central California Coast for diving and you need a reservation to dive there - they only let 15 pairs of divers in a day. The kelp forests are amazing to see first hand and can be tricky to navigate. I was using some different gear on this dive and wasn't weighted heavily enough on my first dive. This made my ascent a bit tricky and to stop myself from shooting to the surface I had to hold onto a pice of help unnaturally hard. This resulted in a torn trapezius and a painful Saturday. At least I have the weekend to recover and edit photos. 

I got a couple of shots I like. This is my second favourite. I'll post the other early in the week.

Princess

I had to take my sweet girl to the doggy ER today after she had a nasty allergic reaction. She's been in the hospital on an IV cath all day and I get to go and pick her up in a little while. If I needed a reminder about how much I adore this little four-legged person, today I got it.

Starry Eyed

Last weekend I took my new camera rig into the ocean for the first time. Adding to the million things I already had to do with my hands during the descent (hold the line, fill my dry suit with air to avoid squeeze, equalize), now I had this very large negatively buoyant object in my hand. It was an interesting experience. The conditions were not ideal in Monterey last weekend...it was described as "pea soup"... we had about 6ft of visibility. This shot was taken at a depth of 53ft and there was a lot of debris in the water. I took only about 20 shots on the dive and this was probably the only one I'd consider posting. Can't wait to get out and shoot in some good conditions.

Suspended

I took the afternoon off from my real job yesterday for my second underwater shoot. This gave me the opportunity to fix some things I did wrong the first time, but presented new challenges and new learnings. Slippery When Wet

When I picked up my new underwater photography rig a couple of weeks ago, I was dying to test it out, albeti a bit nervous about submerging my Nikon D700 in water. The hotel I was staying at in Monterey just happened to have a pool so I decided to take a dip. With nothing in the pool to shoot, I had to get creative and thought this wet floor sign was kind of interesting. So this is it, my very first DSLR underwater photograph :)

Falling into You

Hi everyone. This image marks the first in a new journey for me. Underwater photography is something I've been wanting to try for about 8 months now but I wanted to have mastered my diving skills before I started. Well that happened this past weekend when I got my advanced diving certification and took my first dive with a big camera rig. To say it was challenging is an understatement. I'm basically learning photography from scratch, and certainly learning the intricacies of my camera in a new way. Everything is different underwater....everything.

Magical Moonlight

I posted this earlier but G+ somehow created two versions of the image, so when I tried to delete one version it delated both. Ooops. Anyway, this is Yosemite Falls in the moonlight. 6 long exposure images were combined to make this star-trail image.
